The new generation Hiace range uses an advanced forward control design that embodies many passive safety features with all-important superior cargo space. Using advanced square-form styling the large one-piece pressings of galvannealed sheet steel reduce the potential for rattles and shakes and cut down on wind noise. Intelligent design assures improved control and ease of driving at all times. Essential indicators and switches are positioned for maximum visibility and intuitive operation. The new dash-mounted shift lever allows pass-through access from either side of the cabin. Powering Hiace are 2 all-new engines engineered to produce high power with low fuel consumption and emissions. The 2.7 litre petrol engine available in ZL and Minibus produces 111kW of power @ 4800rpm and 241Nm of torque @ 3800rpm. For diesel fans the 2.5 litre turbo charged common rail engine delivers 80kW of power @ 3600rpm and an impressive 260Nm of torque from 1600rpm. For all models, except petrol Minibus, there is a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed electronically controlled (ECT) automatic transmissions. Although as large as some sheds its sleek exterior skin aids fuel economy, reduces wind noise and looks really good as well. An important consideration in the new cabin design was providing ample covered storage to help keep the interior clutter free and prevent reective objects interferring with visibility. The 2.7 litre petrol engine has the same level of sophistication as engines found in many passenger cars but with power and torque output developed to meet the needs of commercial drivers. The new generation 2.5 litre common-rail turbo diesel engine is a four cylinder 16 valve double overhead cam design that produces 35% more torque than its predecessor. Hiace ZL van makes good use of interior space for cargo and occupants.

Maximum power of 111kW is produced @ 4800rpm and maximum torque is 241Nm @ 3800rpm. Electronic fuel injection system. 91 octane is acceptable. The 2.5 litre 2KD-FTV common rail turbo diesel engine is a four cylinder 16 valve double overhead cam design. Maximum power of 80kW (75kW for ZL) is produced @ 3600rpm and maximum torque is 260Nm @ 1600~2600rpm. Direct injection system. Diesel is required. Fuel tank capacity is 70 litres. Electrical system for petrol models: Battery is 12 Volts; Alternator is 130 Amps; Starter output is 1.6kW. Electrical system for turbo diesel models: Battery is 12 Volts; Alternator is 100 Amps; Starter output is 2.0kW (manual) 2.7kW (auto). Clutch is a single dry plate type with diaphragm spring; 236mm diameter (manual models). 5-speed manual transmission.
