Descriptions
ENGLISH
ENGL 011 (15 credit hours) GRAMER (4HRS) The part of this course aims at teaching Basic English grammar to enable students construct different types of sentences. Parts of nominative and verbal sentences (which has one subject), tenses, prepositions, adverbs, adjectives, relatives pronouns, transforming sentences from affirmative to negative and interrogative form, conjunctions used in exceptions, comparison and assertion. Derivation using prefixes and suffixes-Exercises.
Prerequisites: None

LISTENING (4 HRS) In this course, students practice listening to spoken linguistic material in the form of dialogues or normal text about different topics that concern students at this stage. Gradual exercises to test students' comprehension in the form of questions to be answered orally by students. Conversation exercises to practice dialogues and speech techniques which suit the rule of individual, pairs and group speech. Training students on a parallel line to focus on intonation, stress, during listening because they affect the meaning.

WRITING (3 HRS) The part of this course aims at giving students the opportunity to practice writing through a descriptive paragraph, expressing one's own ideas and points of view, using correct punctuation marks and appropriate English. Providing students with adequate practice in writing simple nominative sentences in present tense expressing real-life situations. Increasing students' knowledge in adjectives concerning figures, sizes, dimensions and colors. Teaching them how to link adjectives with subjects then linking these nominative structures with the rest of the sentence using linking verbs, especially verb to be with more emphasis on the importance of places relationship between the subject and predicate using correct prepositions. Writing correct and appropriate sentences using conjunctions and linking words to form a well organized and coherent paragraph.

READING (2 HRS) This course aims at providing students with essential practice in the type of reading and comprehension skills and giving them the opportunity to master useful vocabulary and linguistic structures to be able to read and comprehend short English texts. The course focuses basically on reading texts containing nominative sentences, verbal sentences and comprehension exercises. Exercises on contextual inferring skill through deduction depending on understanding and developing students' confidence in guessing meaning from contextual clues. Moreover, training students to pay attention during reading to punctuation such as full stops, commas, linking words and to distinguish between functional words, taking into consideration the gradual length of the text and its knowledgement level.

VOCABULARY (2 HRS) The course aims at teaching English idioms in different subjects to develop and enrich students' vocabulary. These lexical items will be taught in linguistic contexts taking into consideration the level of the students. Students are provided with different and varied exercises to facilitate their understanding and comprehension. Providing students with a list of linguistics items to develop and enrich students' vocabulary. Training students to derive new words. The relation between prefixes, suffixes, roots and their role in word form and meaning. Students practice recognizing the primary, secondary and metaphorical meaning.

ENGL 012 (7credit hours) TERMINOLOGY (InfoTech) (4HRS) 5

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University College of Computer and nformation Sciences The course aims at enhancing and developing the language skills that students during the first semester through specialized texts in the field of their study . The students study a number of texts in this course which contain varied topics such as, the computer and its application software, different kinds of disks ( hard and floppy disks ), operating system, software language, database, printers, programs designation, multimedia, spider net. There will be gradual exercises in comprehension, grammar, writing and listening after each text.

VOCABULARY (3 HRS) This Course aims at reinforcing and developing the lexicon deposit of the students in the field of their study .The students study a well selected list of language vocabulary that are commonly used in the computer . they also study the different kinds of specialized lexicons and the function of each kind . The students will be trained on the basic skills of research in the lexicon such as, selecting the kind of lexicon and the speed of looking up words. In addition, students will be trained on key symbols for each lexicon. Students will be given the opportunity to focus on intonation, stress to develop and improve their pronunciation skill.

Mathematics
MATH 011: Precalculus I (4 credit hours) This course covers elementary precalculus mathematics which includes sets of numbers, equations and inequalities, exponents and logarithms, functions and their graphs, polynomials, and analytic geometry of the straight line and the circle.
Prerequisites: None

MATH 012: Precalculus II (4 credit hours) This course covers a more advanced precalculus mathematics which includes matrices, trigonometry and trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, exponential and logarithmic functions, Complex numbers, Sequences and series, and conic sections.

Physics
PHYS 011: Physics (4 credit hours) Introduction to the basic concepts and principles of physics. Physical quantities, vectors, 1D kinematics, 2D kinematics, Newton's laws, circular motion and applications of Newton's laws. Work, energy, and power, potential energy and conservation of energy, linear momentum and conservation, rolling motion, angular momentum and torque.
Prerequisites: MATH 011

Computer Science
CS011: Introduction to Computing (7 credit hours) This is an introductory course in the second semester of the preparatory year and designed for beginner students who need enough background and skills to pursue their degree in the College of Computer and Information Sciences. Topics include: computer components, different kinds of computers, computer hardware and software, introduction to operating systems, introduction to networks and the internet, and the need for data security and protection. The students will acquire skills in dealing with files and folders in windows environment, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations and how to use Internet explorer and email. Also, Linux operating system will be introduced.
