THE UNITED STATES FEDERAL GONVERNMENT SHOULD NOT INVEST SUBSTAINTAIL SPENDING IN A NEW STIMULUS PROGRAM

Neg Case)
Good morning/afternoon. My name is Mercedes Hall. I attend Daniel Hale WIlliams Prep School Of Medicine. And I along side my partner Marissa Bacon stand strongly resolved that the United States should NOT invest substantial spending in a new stimulus program. The following contentions will support my position. We'd first like to define stimulus as something that rouses or incites to activity -Merriam Webster Dictionary

(Resolution B,

1) Our first contention is Federal Stimulus spending is based on the economic theory Keynesianism, which has been thoroughly discredited amoung expert economists, and rooted in ideas of flawed investment. Generally, the idea of stimulus is one big invest, but more so an investment in ourselves. And hasn't proven to be a substaintail enough reason to increase the debt Be sure to provide an impact on the Aff's lack of theoretical justification. Why does it matter that the affirmative is based on bad economics theory? Connect the contention the evidence using some rhetoric in these public debates.

Neil Reynolds, Writer at Globe And Mail, Jun 10 -----Economist John Taylor (Stanford University) says government intervention caused

the market meltdown of 2008 and that short-run government spending has only made matters worse. He dismisses the theory that stimulus spending can jump-start an economy as an old-fashioned Keynesian illusion. Economist John Cochrane (University of Chicago) says the Keynesian theory of stimulus spending to end recessions is so wrong that it is now taught only for its fallacies. Economist Robert Barro (Harvard University) says Keynesian assumptions have been thoroughly disproven. Just because an economy is in crisis, he says, it doesnt invalidate everything we have learned about macroeconomics since 1936. These eminent economists (and many others) affirm celebrated Nobel Prize economist Milton Friedmans conclusion about New Deal stimulus spending in the Great Depression: It hampered economic recovery, prolonged unemployment and set the stage for ever more intrusive and costly government. Short-term income gains do not increase consumption the essential assertion of Keynesian doctrine. He cited, as an example, the big one-time tax rebates (household average: $500 U.S.) that the U.S. government mailed to taxpayers in 2008. Rather than increase consumption, the rebates precipitated a national retreat from consumption. One problem with stimulus programs, Prof. Taylor argues, is that they are deliberatively designed as temporary, targeted and timely. To increase consumption, they would need to be permanent, pervasive and predictable. ------Congressional Budget Office director Douglas Elmendorf reiterated his initial assessment of President Obamas $800 billion stimulus package that while it may boost the countrys GDP in the short-term, in the long-term, the effect of such spending is a net negative on GDP growth -CBO Director 11/15/2011

Our second contention is that Federal Stimulus spending is uniquely unproductie, wasteful, and generates medeocracy. The idea of stimulus has strides to go before it becomes effective. We prove this through our evidence from both lead economists as well as polls form the standard US citizen. -----Just the first two years of Obamas stimulus cost more than the entire cost of the Iraq War under President Bush, or six years of that war. -Washington Examiner,
Examiner Staff Writer 08/23/10

-----Over two-thirds of Americans believe that President Obama's signature stimulus bill was a waste, a new poll found Tuesday. "The majority of AMericans have looked at the effects of the 2008 Federal Stimulus plan and rightly viewed it as wasteful.

-----Sixty-eight percent of Americans said they think the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was a "waste," compared to just 29 percent who think the money was well-spent, according to an ABC/Washington Post poll released Tuesday morning. -Michael O'Brien - 10/05/10, "The Hill" Blog -----"Republicans have hammered Democrats who supported the stimulus over the last 20 months, accusing them of wasting money while not creating jobs" -Michael O'Brien 10/05/10, "The Hill" Blog
------We could have done a lot of good things with the $830 billion that was flushed

down the toilet through the 2009 stimulus. That money could have been used to permanently transform our entitlement programs to free-market personal ownership accounts. It could have been used for massive pro-growth tax cuts. Instead, it was used to grow perennial dependency and for special interest handouts -11/15/2011
------The following are just some of the examples of "stimulus waste" that we have seen

over the last 16 months.... *Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton (Boka Ratone), Florida used $15,551 in stimulus money to pay two researchers to study how alcohol affects a mouse's motor functions. *The U.S. government handed over a staggering $54 million in "stimulus cash" to Connecticut's politically-connected Mohegan Indian tribe, which runs one of the highest grossing casinos in the country. *Syracuse professor of psychology Michael Carey received $219,000 in federal stimulus money for a study that examines the sex patterns of college women. *$1.15 million in stimulus funds was allocated for the installation of a new guard rail around the non-existent Optima Lake in Oklahoma. *Researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo received $389,000 to pay 100 residents of Buffalo $45 each to record how much malt liquor they drink and how much pot they smoke each day. Instead of spending nearly $400,000, the U.S. government could have achieved the same goal by having a couple of scientists join a fraternity. *$100,000 in federal stimulus funds were used for a martini bar and a brazilian steakhouse. *A dinner cruise company in Chicago got nearly $1 million in stimulus funds to combat terrorism. *$233,000 in stimulus money went to the University of California at San Diego to study why Africans vote. *The Cactus Bug Project at the University Of Florida was allocated $325,394 in stimulus funds to study the mating decisions of cactus bugs. According to the project proposal, one

of the questions that will be answered by the study is this: "Whether males with large weapons are more or less attractive to females." *One Denver developer received $13 million in tax credits to construct a senior housing complex despite that fact that the same developer is being sued as a slumlord for running rodent-infested apartment buildings in the city of San Francisco. *Sheltering Arms Senior Services was awarded a contract worth $22.3 million in stimulus money to weatherize homes for poor families in Houston, Texas - but a new report from Texas Watchdog says that the weatherization work was performed so badly that 33 of the 53 homes will need to be completely redone. *A liberal theater in Minnesota named "In the Heart of the Beast" (in reference to a well known quote by communist radical Che Guevara) received $100,000 for socially conscious puppet shows. *California's inspector general found that $1 million in stimulus funds for a program to give summer jobs to young people was improperly used for overhead expenses such as rent and utility bills. *Landon Cox, a Duke University assistant professor of computer science, was awarded $498,000 in stimulus money to study Facebook. *The town of Union, New York is being urged to spend $578,000 in stimulus money that it did not request for a homelessness problem that it claims it does not have. *Lastly, who could forget the $3.4 million "ecopassage" to help turtles cross a highway in Tallahassee, Florida? Yes, the U.S. government sure knows how to waste money. And the truth is that there is simply no way that the U.S. government would have been able to accumulate a debt of over $13 trillion dollars (and growing exponentially) without being incredibly skilled at wasting money. In fact, the Pentagon says that there are literally trillions of dollars that it cannot account for. Now how in the world do you lose track of trillions of dollars? That takes some major league incompetence. It is enough to make you want to pull your hair out. We were once the wealthiest, most prosperous nation on the planet, but we have recklessly squandered our great wealth. Over and over we kept voting for corrupt politicians who endlessly wasted our money on the most ridiculous things. So now we will pay the price. So is there any hope that the U.S. government will stop wasting so much money? Not

with the current collection of Republicans and Democrats that currently inhabit Washington D.C. The truth is that both parties have been wasting our money for decades. Many politicians will often talk about the need to "control spending", but when time comes to do it very few of them are ever willing to take action. -The Economic Collapse Blog, 2010

OUR THIRD CONTENTION IS THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WERE TO PASS ANOTHER STIMULUS PROGRAM, IT WOULD BE SO UNPOPULAR THAT IT WOULD ENSURE THE ELECTION OF A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT OF 2012, LEADING TO A COMPLETE REPEAL OF NOT ONLY THE STIMULUS BUT OF OBAMA'S HEALTH CARE REFORM AND TO A SLATE OF POLICIES THAT WOULD LEAD TO ANOTHER DEEP RECESSION.

A) ANOTHER FEDERAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS PROGRAM WOULD BE DEEPLY UNPOPULAR AND HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL, JEOPARDIZING OBAMA'S RE-ELECTION HOPES. For any political follower, it's prety previlant how Obama recieves alot of opposition from Republicans and conservatives regarding his ECONOMIC CHOICES. iN THE HOPES OF ANY REVISED MOVES TOWARDS JOBS AND HEALTHCARE, HIS RE-ELECTION WOULD BE NECESSARY B) WASTED CAPITOL SPILLS OVER INTO THE REJECTION OF FUTURE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION PLANNING AND INNOVATION. SO WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS THAT ARE CRITICAL AND POSSIBLY DETRIMENTAL TO THE MAINTENANCE OF OUR COUNTRY, IT WILL BECOME LOST IN THE DISTRUST AND DISAPPROVAL OF OBAMA'S JUDGEMENT, A LOWERED MEDIA SPINOFF, LESS INTEREST FROM THE PEOPLE, AND A "I TOLD YOU SO" ATTITUDE FROM REPUBS B.) IF A REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT IS ELECTED IN 2012,

ALL STIMULUS WILL BE REPEALED, "OBAMACARE" WILL BE TERMINATED, AND ANOTHER ROUND OF BUDGETBUSTING TAX CUTS WILL BE PASSED, LEADING TO ANOTHER DEEP RECESSION. Along with this -----Obamas stimulus, passed in his first month in office, will cost more than the entire Iraq War more than $100 billion (15%) more. -Washington Examiner, Examiner

-----President Barack Obama was elected last year in a sizable victory over his Republican competitor. Bolstering his position was the huge Democratic majority in both houses of Congress. Given these advantages, combined with intelligence and his natural talent as an orator, the President could pretty much chart his own course. He did so, immediately turning to the weak economy and the battered financial sector first. In his first days in office, Obama pushed through a sizable stimulus package, bailed out numerous financial institutions, and put into place a host of measures to prop up the banking industry at considerable cost to taxpayers. ------So, as the President turns his sights to health care reform, he is finding a much chillier reception from the media, Congress and the American people. In my view, this is not necessarily because of his presenting the wrong proposal at the wrong time. Obama has simply wasted too much capital on bailing out the banks and this has left him in a weaker position politically. -Edward Harrison, a writer at Credit Writedowns, July 09

The plan worked. The financial industry has roared back to life with huge profits and large bonuses all around as a result of the governments largesse well at least for most of the largest companies. The surviving large financial institutions are even larger and more dominant than before the crisis. Now, it is business as usual again on Wall Street. In this sense, Obama and his economic team have been very successful. But at what cost? -Edward Harrison, a writer at Credit Writedowns, July 09 B.) CURRENTLY, FORECASTS ARE FOR A VERY TIGHT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN 2012-THE OUTCOME WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE POPULARITY AND CREDIBILITY OF OBAMA'S ECONOMIC POLICIES. ------While the captains of finance are deciding how to spend their bonus money, ordinary Americans are still losing their jobs and their homes. The economy is still in tatters. People are angry about this juxtaposition. No wonder everyone is having a hissy fit about Goldman, the owner of allegedly market manipulating trading codes and winner of the

Wall Street earnings parade. So, as the President turns his sights to health care reform, he is finding a much chillier reception from the media, Congress and the American people. In my view, this is not necessarily because of his presenting the wrong proposal at the wrong time. Obama has simply wasted too much capital on bailing out the banks and this has left him in a weaker position politically. -Edward Harrison, a writer at Credit Writedowns, July 09

-------"Back in February 2009, the U.S. Congress passed an $862 billion "economic

stimulus" bill to help the struggling American economy recover from the horrible financial crisis of 2007 and 2008. Right now, federal agencies are spending this stimulus money at the rate of approximately 196 million dollars an hour, and they will continue to spend it in staggering amounts up until the September 30, 2010 deadline" -The Economic Collapse Blog, 2010
