A Not So Little Red Dot

drawing painting photography sculpture art history & criticism

oin us in embracing the Little red Dot on her upcoming birthday. As we explore the visual arts this quarter, reflect on the growth of the local arts scene, the increasing migrant population who make up the New Singaporeans, and even the recently expanded opposition presence just some of the elements of our growing red Dot. Just as we focused last quarter on Virgin Art-ventures, this quarter we offer classes inspired by the theme of Singapore. 10x10 draws from the architecture, landscape and people of Singapore. Who is Singapore? uses the camera to ask that question. We designed these to celebrate the iridescent colours, pulsing rhythms, and artistic and social fabrics which make Singapore a not-so-Little red Dot after all. Whether you are a silent thinker, social butterfly, geek or patriot, you will find a course that is sure to whet your appetite and keep you feeling entertained and empowered. This is Art Bugwhere art is sociable, accessible and addictive.

jUl-SEP 2011 INSIGHT

As we come together to celebrate 46 years of nation building, Art Bug questions what it means to call Singapore home, whether youve recently relocated home or ventured over as an expatriate. We ask 3 creative professionals what its like to be living, being and creating in the little red dot.
carmella Robinson

You are quite the globe trotter! So tell us, what is one aspect of Singapore you find absolutely fascinating that has helped you acclimatize in the short time youve been here? Without a doubt, it would be the food. There is so much selection that sometimes I just cant decide what to eat! Its amazing to see colours, flavours and people come together to form edible masterpieces. based on the local experiences youve gathered so far, what would be an ideal pet project you would like to see take shape? Im really looking forward to running an art activity session for mothers and babies, exploring paint and mark making. The classes are exceptional and fundamental towards a babys development; encouraging motor coordination, problem solving and the much needed communication in todays highly digital environment. Carmella Robinson is Art Bugs Manager of Education and Experience. She develops programmes, teaches the little ones and makes sure everyones learning lots and having fun!

Mak Kum Weng

youve been away in New york for a while, 5 years to be exact. What were some discoveries and life-long lessons learnt? The Big Apple gave me an understanding of how a cultural metropolis is developed, the evolving networks that exist, the freedom of expression and the confidence each person carries about their differences and cultural background. It must have been such an enriching experience for an artist! you decided to then make the big move back home whats in the pipeline? Growing, learning and expressing myself are most important to me; the form by which this is fulfilled is secondary. Most importantly, I should continue to stay true to not being afraid of taking risks and push personal and societal boundaries. As a Singaporean, I hope that we, as a nation, will have the necessary education and exposure to decide where we want to go, not by default but by choice. Mak Kum Weng is an art educator at Art Bug. Join him in 10X10 in Singapore and experience drawing in a different light, beyond the classroom.

yian Huang

like kum Weng, youve also been overseas for a while. In fact, 18 years away across 4 continents. What brought you home and why now? I found that while I liked the excitement of working in NyC, I lacked the feeling of contributing to the local arts scene, and building a community as NyC is too transient of a place. When I got back to Singapore I met paul, a former student of mine who went on and become a professional photographer. pauls student Curly calls me her Masters Master. That was very gratifying to know that my influence is being passed on. What about Singapore then, that inspires you every day as photographer? people, especially Singaporeans, think that Singaporeans are unfriendly, and generally dont want to be photographed. This is not true. They say that the best thing about travel is that you finally return home and see it with new eyes, as if for the first time. This view is what I want to share. Yian is a management consultant turned photographer. Join him in action this term in Photographing Strangers, I Have a DSLR in Auto Mode and Who is Singapore?
