Lesson Plan

The Set-up

Levels: Primary 6 A
Number of pupils: 30 pupils
Time: 8.00 a.m. – 9.00 a.m.
Topic: Our Solar System

Unit goals

By the end of this unit 2, students will be able to:

• Understand the occurrence of day and night.

• Understand more about our solar system and planetary system.
• Explore how our solar system works.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:

• Explore and name the other planetary system.

• State that the sun, earth and moon are part of the Solar System and the sun is a
star that gives out heat and light energy
• Recognize that life exists on earth because of its position from the sun, and the
atmosphere around it.

Materials

• ICT laboratory
The Lesson

The Hook

I will start the lesson by recapping what we have learned in the previous lesson
that is on the Earth and the Moon. Then I will ask them ‘as we all know that the Moon
revolve round the Earth, do you think the Sun revolve round the Earth too?’

Exploration

Now, I will divide the pupils into groups of 6. Then each group I will give them a
question that they need to investigate. Two or three groups will get same questions. The
investigation questions is as following
• ‘What can we find in our solar system? Can you describe the position of each
planet in our solar system?’
• ‘Is it true that life can only exists on Earth only? Why?
• ‘Investigate whether the Pluto is considered as a planet or not. Give reasons for
your answer.’
• What are the differences between the comets and asteroids and list down at least 2
characteristics of both?

Practice

The pupils need to present their finding in the class verbally in front of the class.

Summary

After presenting, teacher will show a video of a solar system to reinforce their
knowledge about their finding of solar system.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1YazfYrYNI). The pupils were given website to log
in to play the activity
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/playspace/games/jigsaw/launch.html). This is an
individual activity and if they have time they can play it together with their friends. They
can also access the activities when they are at home by logging in the teacher’s blog.
The close

Application

At home, the pupils will have work in group to write a report on their findings to
be put on the notice board.

Assessment

The learning objectives are met when the students are able to name the other
planets in our solar system, state that the sun, earth and moon are part of our solar system
and state that sun is a star that us the light and heat energy during their presentation.
Moreover, the pupils must also be able to present that the why life can only exists on
earth.

Preview

I will tell them that they can’t any sources on earth in other planets so we have to
precious what we have right now. So, the most important thing to us is water which is
also the next topic that we are going to learn. I will ask them a question about the water
such as ‘why is water so important to us?’
