Douglas County Readers Recognize Local Favorites

The results are in. The ballots are counted. From FAVORITE ASIAN RESTAURANT to FAVORITE SENIOR LIVING CENTER and everything in between, readers of The NewsReview have told us who they believe are the crme de la crme in their specic category. Their choices are contained in this unique advertising section the Readers Choice Awards. Last fall, we published an eight page ballot. The print version was distributed to readers who receive The News-Review at their home. An online version was also available at www.nrtoday.com. We asked readers to choose a favorite from multiple businesses in specic categories. There was also a place where they could write in their favorite. Readers made their choices in over 70 categories and we are pleased to bring you the results. Ten readers won a $50 gift certicate to enjoy a shopping spree at one of Douglas Countys favorite retailers Fred Meyer. This section represents the opinions of the readers who responded to the ballot. If your favorites did not win this year, be sure to vote in the 2012 Readers Choice.

ildlife Safari is proud to have been selected for the 11th time in a row as the publics #1 tourist attraction in Douglas County - what an honor this is! It is YOUR community involvement and support that helps to bring new life and exhibits into the park. Now, as Wildlife Safari celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012, we look forward to building on those factors that keep the park thriving so that every visitor who walks through our gates can experience a memorable and thrilling adventure. he Wildlife Safari has been working hard to debut its brand new exhibit in the village: The Wells Fargo Australian Walkabout exhibit in the lower Village! Grand Opening is slated for spring break. Come out and meet the new animals! In the drive-through, the hippo exhibit has been renovated - now you can really see the hippo! And the best part is that a new hippo will be arriving this spring, so Blippo will have a companion! All these changes have been possible due to the generous support of individuals and organizations within our com-
munity. And lets not forget our own hard-working staff, docents and volunteers. It is the united and mutual effort of everyone from outside and inside the park that keeps us thriving, that makes it possible for us to provide a unique environment for people from all over the world to enjoy, learn about and experience native and exotic wildlife. ecause of the support of the community, the park is able to extend educational and creative opportunities beyond our daily visitors. For example, in recent years Wildlife Safari has actively built upon existing connections in providing a venue and individual programs for autistic and critically ill children and adults. Working with organizations such as Camp Millennium, Make-AWish Foundation and Dream Connection, Wildlife Safari has been able to reach out beyond the boundaries of the park. In seeking to offer a moment of reprieve for these children, the staff and volunteers at the park have been touched by these individuals in ways that they will never forget. nother milestone that could not have been ac-
complished without community support is Wildlife Safaris accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). This signies that Wildlife Safari has established and maintains professional zoological management standards as judged by other professional members of the Association. Of the thousands of zoos across the United States, we are proud to join the 223 zoological facilities passing the AZAs stringent inspections. Sherm & Wanda Olsrud have been in the grocery business for about 50 years, first in Eugene and then in Medford, Klamath Falls and Roseburg. The first store the Olsruds bought was a meat market in Eugene in 1956, which they operated until 1961. Sherm & Wanda then bought a 24-hour market in Eugene, selling it in 1967 to move to Medford. When Sherm & Wanda came to Medford in 1967, they bought the Thunderbird Market on Jacksonville Highway. In 1974, they purchased a store at the Shasta Plaza Mall in Klamath Falls. Other stores in Medford and Roseburg came in following years. The Olsruds grocery business has been active in supporting many local activities including 4-H, FFA and many others. They attend Jackson County,
Klamath County, Tulelake/ Butte Valley, Josephine County, Siskiyou Jr. Livestock and Douglas County auctions. For the past five years they have donated a semitruck load of food to the Umpqua Community Action Network. Sherm, Wanda and their son Steve Olsrud remain deeply committed to Medford, Klamath Falls, Roseburg and the surrounding community. Sherm, Wanda and Steve say their stores strive to give the customers what they want in a friendly manner at a good price. Sherm says, If you shop with us you will save money. ATRIO Health Plans is a local insurance company that offers Medicare advantage plans to area seniors and other individuals eligible for Medicare benets. ATRIO plans include complete Medicare coverage but also offer additional benets and cover more healthcare costs. The federal government contracts with private insurance companies like ATRIO to offer these plans. In addition to the original physician owners of DCIPA and CCC, Marion Polk Community Health Plan (MPCHPA), the insurance company established by the Salem-area physician association, became an ATRIO shareholder in 2011. The addition of the MPCHPA members doubled ATRIOs total membership and rapidly grew ATRIO requiring the addition of employees in each community served. The companys growth, says CEO Ruth Rogers Bauman, will enable ATRIO to capitalize on the strengths of our combined staffs to continue to offer quality services and affordable premiums to our members in addition to an exemplary level of service that Medicare has recognized with its highest 5-Star designation. While advantage plan annual enrollment begins in October, individuals who have recently become eligible for Medicare or who are new residents of the area and are looking for a new advantage plan can enroll at any time. Enrollment can be done through local insurance agents or by calling ATRIO at 877-672-8620.
