Managing Esthetic Dilemmas: An Interdisciplinary Approach 8:30am 10:00am Synopsis Part One Autotransplantation of Premolars to Replace Traumatized Maxillary Incisors in the Growing Patient Options to replace missing, ankylosed or non-restorable teeth in the maxillary anterior region are limited for the growing patient. treatment is usually aimed at developing the alveolar ridge to allow for dental implant placement when growth is completed. autotransplantation of a premolar into an edentulous maxillary incisor site offers permanent tooth replacement using a natural tooth to achieve an optimal aesthetic and functional outcome. Long term success rates of this treatment modality have been reported in Scandinavia of up to 93%. Certainly the knowledge and skills developed by performing tooth autotransplantation will be of benet when tooth regeneration becomes available to our patients. 10:30am 12:00nn Synopsis Part Two The Interdisciplinary Team: A Collaborative Approach to Optimize Treatment Outcomes in todays world of extreme makeovers, more and more adults are seeking dental treatment to correct specic anterior esthetic discrepancies. unfortunately, many of these patients also have signicant functional concerns which prohibit predictable and esthetic restorative solutions to these problems. therefore, it is often necessary to evaluate these patients from an interdisciplinary treatment perspective. doctors Janakievski, Kinzer, and Kokich will emphasize the importance of using an interdisciplinary team treatment approach. DoCtor sessioN 1:30pm 3:00pm Salon G A Spike in the Ice: Multi-Tasking with Mini-Screws* Once upon a time, orthodontists pitted groups of teeth against each other in hopes of predictable movement. Much like a tug-of-war on ice, the ensuing results were often haphazard or unintentional. the advent of mini-screws forever altered the concept of anchorage preparation as a spike which can now be driven into the ice to provide a stable mechanical reference. during this presentation, a plethora of applications will illustrate the formative steps (including pitfalls) in this real paradigm shift in orthodontics. The Crisis in Orthodontic Academics: Its Real; It will Get Worse; Absent an Understanding of Why People go into Teaching, No Practical Solution is Possible i think most would agree that we face a crisis in orthodontic education. although it is easy to blame debt and low pay, the real problem is that, beyond providing fodder for an orderly practice transition, there is no obvious market for new knowledge, the most important work-product of an orthodontic academic. in contrast, straight teeth are in great demand. under these circumstances, why would a smart young resident even think of an academic career? the problem is easy to diagnose; any practical solution, however, is difficult to imagine, given the nature of contemporary orthodontic practice. the dimensions of this problem will be discussed.
