With all the freedom of the holidays blurring into the everyday grind of school (internal assessments, exams, tests, quizzes, assessments, and homework), Im sure weve all been looking forward to ESP! Trips to Zanzibar, Usamabara, the deep blue sea, the crater highlands, biking around Dar and painting are all trips were looking forward to, and Im sure were counting down to already (Only 312 hours to go, guys!) Our resolutions for this years image are to get out more content to you (and on time!) and we will be trying our hardest to cut down on exclamation marks (just not in this particular editorial)! This year were going green, so well only be passing out 50 hard copies (which you can nd in the library amongst other places) but dont you fret- weve got online copies with links on our Facebook page, (Join us! My name is Rahul Srivatsa I am IB 1 student who loves photography. When I rst when to Serengeti in 2007 I loved the place soo much that I begged my dad for a camera. He told me that he would buy me one for my birthday, I got a sony cybershot. A great camera, which I always carried around, utilised it to the fullest. My dad supported my hobby and it was the worlds greatest moment when he gave me his Nikon D90. Someday, I wish I can turn this hobby into a proffesion. My dream is to work for National Geographic.

HIV/AIDS!Awareness!Project
Have you thought how art could be a form of raising awareness?

Statistics state that about 150,000 people die of AIDS every year in Tanzania. The impact of HIV/ AIDS in a country like Tanzania is huge and we all are aware of this. Since I had met children with HIV/AIDS I was perturbed by their stories and experiences of how people mistreated them. I had seen many campaigns on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, but never a portrayal of the people affected. I was committed to nding a solution and changing this perspective. My passion for art and love for my African community made me want to take up the challenge of starting an independent community project known as the HIV/AIDS Awareness Project (HAP). This includes an HIV/AIDS campaign that promotes the coming together as a community, in the aim to reduce HIV/AIDS in Dar-es-salaam. Through my knowledge of the design cycle I was able to understand the current perception of HIV/AIDS. In this process I had interviewed locals, doctors and NGOs. I then created several illustrations of designs that I could potentially use for the campaign. In order to nd my perfect design I went out to survey the local audience on the streets of Dar-es-salaam. With these evaluation results I was able to nd my perfect illustration. I then recruited six motivated individuals to paint the mural on a popular road, where potentially people would view it. It is an everlasting experience to create a mural with a strong and positive message about such an overwhelming health and social issue. It was a challenge to begin such a project but this experience has motivated me to undertake other projects of signicant impact. My team was very enthusiastic even when they knew they had to spend two hours of every Wednesday painting under the sun. However, it all paid off when we had people walking on the street come and tell us how amazing our work looks. The melting ice lolly towards the end of every lesson just made the day perfect. Our hard work and efforts in creating this mural makes each one of us very proud today. We hope to continue such magnicent work in the future in order to make such a positive impact.

I wont cut my hair all this year Ill try get at least a 4 in all my subjects
I want to get 40+ points in IB (hahaha) I want to get into UCLA I want to buff up I want to lose weight On the 22nd of December, I want to walk outside, point at the sky and say, HAH, Take that! I want to stop binging on cheese I want to survive IB I want to go to ve circuses I want to wear blue at least once a week this year I want to take over the world before it ends. I want to cut down on soda.

They say beasts will hurt you, inict you with so much pain, play with you a harmful game, where one's loss is another's gain. And I am afraid, Oh I am left trembling, and fearful for tomorrow's day. But what scares me more, is that which pains my mind, not the scars of a wild beast, that will fade over time, but the ones imprinted on my heart, that supposed friends left behind on their depart. Actions speak louder than words, And a single soul doesn't stand a chance against the movement of a disloyal herd. So where do we nd those who won't walk out halfway? Who will hold our heads when we know not what to say? Who won't leave scars on our core, but rather memories to fall back on, when the rest of the world leaves us unsure? This world makes me wonder, if such a species even exists, or if we're all destined to drown in the thunder, of the actions that always speak louder?

The Mustard Yellow Couch


I sat by the mustard yellow couch on a hard wooden stool, scared to sit down next to her. I was afraid I would break her. There wasnt a lot I could do for her now, except keep her as comfortable as I could. Five years, we had ve years together, of laughing and playing, and we never mentioned a word. I remember the day she told me like I remember the exact time my train shows up at the station. As I watch her sleeping face, I drown in a memory, resting my hand lightly on her ankle. !!!!!!!!!!!!The phone is ringing. Its four in the morning.!I hate you, Im thinking to the person outside the door, trying to send the message with my brainwaves. I stumble to the door to nd Carrie standing at the door. I smile brightly, until she steps in, her face drawn, and dampwere those! tears?! I frown at her, what happened? I ask. I I cant talk about it. Can I stay with you? of course I cant refuse. This was Carrie. Carrie, my Carrie, even though she doesnt know it yet. I put an arm around her shoulder, and sit her down on the mustard couch, hoping I can replace it soon. I give her a hug, and she stares at me blankly. It hurts that she cant talk to me. Water? I ask. She nods, her face about to crumple once more. I get her water, and a dusty bottle of vodka, just to be on the safe side. I pour a little of both into a glass, I didnt have juice. She could deal with it. I hand her the glass and sit with her for an hour maybe, just sitting and thinking. It passes by painfully. The silence presses down on my ears, I think I might scream. I couldnt scream. A crack of light starts to pass through the window, and I know that its a new start of a day. I sigh, and I know I have to try making a new start. I love you. It comes out so easily because Ive been saying it in my head every time I leave her. The difference doesnt register in my brain. Ive never been alone with Carrie, I knew shed stay by my side as a friend even if she despised the idea. She bites her lip. She doesnt answer. The hands of the clock move by slowly, marking tentwentythirty minutes. I cant love you. It was as simple as that, apparently. Yeah, I know. No, no you dont. Im she sighed, Itll be easier if I just tell you now I guess. Im.., dying a tear rolls down her face.!! My face doesnt move. I dont believe her. I dont!want!to believe her. Carrie? Yeah, I know. Ill still love you. I say what I would want to hear. I dont think its going to happen, but what do I know? All I know is

that shes the girl Im in love with. I drag my eyes across the wall, and look at her again, my eyes catching hers. I lean down and kiss her, once. Her eyes open in shock, and her mouth opens. Why are you surprised? I told you I love you. I have four years. Four and a half at the most. I didnt know you meant it like that. I close my eyes. I blink ve years later, my eyes adjusting to the dying light in the room. The dusty television set in the corner doesnt work. I hate that. Carries loved,!loves,!to watch movies. I get up, pacing. I hate this. I hate that she doesnt get what she needs even as shes leaving. I let out a frustrated growl. I stomp my feet a little. Stupid world. Stupid cancer. Stupid! television.! I lift it over my head, and let it go crashing down. The screen splinters into a million pieces. It doesnt matter what happens to me now that Carries leaving. Work, for the love of Carrie, her name comes out a whisper. I turn, and see Carrie, her eyes open, staring at me. Carrie? she doesnt reply. She!doesnt reply!!I stride to her, shake her shoulder. Her eyes are!open!!She must be unconscious. It had to be something simple. A simple explanation. There was nothing big, she had cancer, she couldnt just pass out. She still had a while to go. That four and half years had stretched to ve, it could stretch a little more. I rip my phone out of my pocket, tearing the already frayed denim, and call 911. Within minutes, the house seems to be lled ashing lights and sounds. I rush to the door, and seeing a paramedic running out, my face is suddenly wet. I bring her to Carrie, I show her Carries beautiful face, and her eyes still wide open. Ten minutes wasnt a long time. It wasnt. They could still save her. They carry her out, and I wish I was like her, then I wouldnt feel this feeling of dread that was creeping up. I wouldnt feel like there was a guillotine about to be smashed down over my neck, beheading me. I wouldnt hear this white-hot noise coming from everywhere. The screaming starts to turn red, blue, red, blue, red, blue I hear a noise and look up, Carrie? She had a heart attack. Mustve been shock. I nally let the guillotine fall.!

In this issues article I wanted to focus on a common theme, the country India. India is a really interesting country to this writer who has always wanted to visit it. It is the seventh largest country in the world and contains so much history. While writing this article, I was able to learn so much about this country and its people.! ! I decided to interview my friend Rahul to talk about his country, culture, and his opinion on it. How long have you live in India? I have lived in India for 4 years but go there every summer for 1-2 months What is it that makes India so diverse from other countries? India is a vast country, it is the 7th largest country in the world. India has 28 states From personal experiences every state is different from the other in its own way. India has 1 national language, 18 official state languages and over 1,000 unofficial languages. We also

have more that 30 different cuisines within our country, all considerably different from each other. We have over 15 types of folk dances unique to India. Religion is also practiced differently from state to state. Architecture in every historical city is different as we had over 100 maharajas (kings) ruling India before the British India. W h a t s yo u r o p i n i o n o n Gandhi? I think Gandhi is one of the greatest people I know, a great l e a d e r, a g r e a t t e a c h e r, a revolutionary and most a good person. He believed in non-violence and won us independence through this idea. With his influence over the country and spreading the idea of non-violence, he prevented millions of casualties. Do you plan to go study in India? Why or why not? India is one of my choices, but not my priority. This is not because of the lack of quality colleges in India, but due to my person desire to

travel the world. Also, it is very hard to get into the best universities in India like the Indian Institute of Management, Indian I n s t i t u t e o f s c i e n c e, I n d i a n Institute of technology and many m o r e . We h a v e v e r y g o o d management, engineering institutes and some of the best medical programs in the world. Tell me a really what are some of the different Indian traditions and which one is your favorite? There are several traditions that i e n j o y. Tw o o f m y f a v o r i t e traditions or festivals are Holi (festival of colors) and diwali (festival of lights). During the festival of Holi, millions of Indians wear new white clothes and play with color and water. Well its like the whole country turns into one frenzy paintball field.!Diwali is another fun festival and a great time to be in India. Few nights of endless display of firecrackers and the evening times when everyone prays, all the

houses are lit up with Diyas (lamps). It is one of the most beautiful sights and definitely worth seeing once in a lifetime.

Mahandas Gandi is one of the most admirable people in this world, Mohandas Gandhi has made his mark on history by showing the world how violence isnt always the best way to solve your problems, and how non-violent means can have a more lasting and beneficial outcome. His efforts helped gain Indias independence from British rule in 1947.! Gandhi was, by profession, a lawyer and went to South Africa after a few years of practicing as a lawyer. There the situation really opened his eyes to the reality that the country was facing. Issues such as racial discrimination against him and the natives really influenced his ideas about the framework of society. After returning to India he played a huge role in the nationalist movement in India, headlining many peaceful protests such as hunger strikes and the March of Salt. The March of Salt was probably one of Gandhis most important protests since he was able to defy British laws without violence by arriving at the coasts of India to produce salt which was forbidden to be done by the locals.! ! His dedication and strong morals influenced and deeply affected the history of India. I believe each one of us has the power to create change, but it takes an immeasurable amount of strength like the one Gandhi possessed to do so without raising a single weapon. Hopefully this can remind us that there is always a better way, other than violence to get around our problems.!!

Mixed Martial Arts Update
up, went down and was tapped out. Jim Miller won the submission of the night award and got a step closer to get a title shot against the current champion of the lightweight division, Frankie Edgar. " Other News: The comain event of this weeks UFC event which is being transmitted for the second t i m e o n F OX h a s b e e n changed. Mark Muos got injured and will not be able to go against the most controversial fighter in the world Chael Sonnen (27-11). This fight was supposed to create an opportunity for one of the fighters to go up against Anderson Silva, the best fighter in the world and current middleweight champion. Substituting Mark Muos will be the british fighter Michael Bisping (23-3). " On the main event of that same night Rashad Evan will fight Phil Davis for an opportunity to go against the light heavyweight champions Jon Bone Jones. An opportunity that was promised to the legendary Dan Henderson a couple of months ago after he won one of the most memorable fights in UFC history against the Brazilian, Mauricio Rua. So who the next contender for the light heavyweight championship will be is still unclear. The president of the UFC, Dana White, still hasnt given any comments on the subject.

" Last Friday night was an epic night for fans of MMA (mixed martial arts). For those who dont know about this sport, it is basically this fighting sport where fighters are allowed to use different techniques and styles of fighting to go against their opponents. The fight continues even if it goes to the ground. " So this UFC fight night was hosted for the first time by the networks FX (for the main fights) and Fuel TV (which hosted the prelims). The most memorable moments of the prelims was the official retirement of the veteran Jorge Rivera (fighting record: 19-9) who won via Knock out against Eric Shafer (14-7). Starting with the main event fights we had the amazing heavyweight fight of the entertaining Pat Barry (7-4) against Christian Morecraft (7-3). At first it seemed that Pat Barry was about to loose against Morecraft via submission when he was thrown to the ground, but Pat was able to eventually stand up and start throwing devastating kicks and punches at his opponent. This eventually finished Morecraft and gave Pat Barry the Fight of the Night Award. On the other hand the main event was a fight between 2 of the top lightweights in the world, Melvin Guillard (46-11) vs. Jim Miller (21-3). This was also a short fight that didnt go beyond the first round when Jim Miller was able to get Guillards back and apply a choke while still standing. Guillard who was no longer able to stand

The Manila Envelopes


" The Manila Envelopes have returned, and it can only mean one thing Report cards. The greatest fear to anyone who moderately cares about there grades. The closer it is till we receive our reports the more agitated people get. The straight sevens student dreads it because what if, gasp!, what if they are no longer a straight sevens student? The sixes and ves average group looks on at the straight sevens student in disgust, whats one six if the rest are sevens? They dont care for their grade as long as there is no 4 involved. You can see the fear in there eyes and you can almost hear them thinking Please no four!. There are also those who dont care for there grades, think its good of them to show up. They arrive, ten minutes late to collect their reports. Laughing at the now satised students who have received an identical report to the one they received last semester. The dont care group casually stroll out of the class room tossing there Manila Envelopes, still sealed, into the bin.

To Lock, or not to Lock?

" At my own house the bathroom door doesn't have a lock and we abide by the rule 'Knock First' and, if all else fails, and somebody walks in on you while youre on the pot, just yell really loudly and more often and then not, you will have the bathroom to yourself. # However, I'm never sure what to do when I nd myself in someone else's bathroom with a lock on the door. Obviously it is intended that I make use of the lock or else risk the chance of being walked in on. # But what if the lock gets jammed and I end up getting stuck in the bathroom? Then what? Do I wait till somebody decides to come looking for me? Or scream for help? Which would probably will get me out sooner. But what if, worse case senario, I screech for help then, when it seems I'm nally free, my prince charming, white horse and all, ends up being the really really cute guy I've been working up the guts to talk to all evening? So, do I lock, and risk the embarrassment of getting stuck and the whole parade that comes with it, or do I not lock and risk getting walked in on?

Real men, psht sure! You call players real men. I beg to differ. Real men, if men can even be called that, are the ones who only care for their one and only! Players are actually the men who have relationship-phobia: men who feel insecure; that if theyre not up to the mark, theyll just be dumped! Just for the sake of feeling in power, they want to be the ones who change their girlfriends like they would clothes. Thats it: theyre all insecure! Wow! You sure misunderstand life! Relationships are the angelic bonds between a guy and a girl whose match has been made in heaven, the perfect couple that will last an eternity; at least until death do them part.! PDA, which you regard with disgust, arent really meant for your eyes! What you call PDA are actually just the couple doing things their way, because when one are in love, they dont care about what goes on around them. Hmm, about the fake mistletoe, thats just the trademark for desperate couples, or should I say the more fantasy oriented ones. I think, in the end, its ultimately the guys decision, because if they are as powerful as you claim them to be, they should be able to say NO! So, that trip to the cinemas to watch Breaking Dawn, or the new pink t-shirt, might be to please her, but too some extent, it was the guys decision, even if not completely, because I must admit that girls can be really pushy! You may be amused by corny couples, and feel glad that you werent the guy in that extremely nauseous and gender revoking relationships, but a few 50 years down the line will open your eyes! No one will fall for your looks anymore, and then, youll be an old and ugly loner! Then youll spend the rest of your days hoping that you were actually that guy in love whos been happily married for a few years now, and has three kids to call his own, and a home, where his wife will welcome him home after a day of hard work with a kiss. While all this goes on somewhere, in a happy household, youll sit on your porch, rocking away on your creaky rocking chair, all by yourself!
