Samford scores new community park

Work is set to begin this month on a major recreation project that will create Samford Parklands.
Council has allocated more than $4.9 million towards the first stage of works at the park, which will include the construction of tennis and netball courts, internal roads and car parks, landscaping and shade shelters. Once completed, the 140ha reserve will be transformed into a multi-use park featuring recreational areas, sports fields, hard courts, walking trails and amenities. The project will also include a major upgrade of a section of Mt Samson Road including the construction of new access points to the park as well as a shared entry into Samford Bowls Club. Planned future works include new soccer fields east of Mt Samson Road and new facilities for the archery range near Samford village. Detailed design work on picnic and passive recreation areas are also planned for future stages of the project. Council has successfully attracted additional funding from the State Government to go towards new facilities at the park. Engineering design work for the external road upgrade is under way and the tender process is expected to begin at the end of the year. Samford Parklands is one of a number of projects council is working on to create and improve recreational areas and open spaces for the community to enjoy. Another major project is the beautification of Woorim on Bribie Island. See page 2 for details.

Families have been flocking to enjoy time at Woorim, after the completion of a major project that has rejuvenated the beachside township.

Check out beautiful Woorim

Council completed work on the latest stage of the Woorim beautification project last month, improving the amenity of the coastal area while retaining the towns charm. New picnic tables and barbeque facilities were installed, along with childrens playground equipment, pathways and lighting. Council re-profiled and stabilised 87m of dunal area, installed sand blow fencing and planted more than 10,000 native plants on a section of sand dune. New turf was laid and coastal shrubs and trees planted to provide shady parkland areas for residents and visitors to enjoy. Two new viewing structures overlooking the beach were built and public access to the beach was also improved. In previous stages of the project, car parks were revamped, roads were upgraded and made safer, and the Lions Park was overhauled along with extensive landscaping on sections of North Street and First Avenue. Tintookie Park will also receive a facelift and streetscaping works will be carried out on North Street and Jacana Avenues commercial precinct.

Our region is growing

Moreton Bay region became the third largest growing local government area in Queensland, with a population increase of 3.3 per cent during the 2006/07 financial year.
Figures released by the State Government show that our regions population soared by more than 10,000 between June 2006 and June 2007, to over 343,000 people. The statistics revealed Moreton Bay region as the

third largest growing in the state behind the Gold Coast and Brisbane. The Sunshine Coast was in fourth place. Our regions 3.3 per cent increase exceeded both Queenslands average annual population growth rate of 2.4 per cent and the national average of 1 per cent. Over the five years to June 2006, Moreton Bay region

has consistently been among the top 10 largest growing local government areas in Queensland, but new developing areas such as North Lakes have seen rapid population expansion. The Griffin-Mango Hill area, which includes North Lakes, recorded the states second largest growth rate for a statistical local area in 2006/07.

The festivities will kick off at Redcliffe Parade from 8am, with stacks of free entertainment on offer throughout the day including the spectacular 2008 Redcliffe Superboat Grand Prix. The First Settlement Festival is proudly supported by the Redcliffe and Bayside Herald. Begin the day with a hearty meal at one of the participating Big Bayside Brekkie eateries from 8am to 11.30am. There will be roving entertainment and patrons will be in the running for a great prize. Queenslands first European landing will be re-enacted at 10am with John Oxley, soldiers and convicts landing on Redcliffes shores. The landing includes an indigenous beach welcome. There will be fast and furious action from 11am as the small but speedy Thundercats hit the water for demonstrations and races. At midday the action will shift into top gear for the 2008 Redcliffe Superboat Grand Prix. Custom cars and bikes will also be on display along Redcliffe Parade and at 1pm the popular Beachy Brothers Tribute Show will be sending out good vibrations among the crowds. A stage in Charlish Park will play host to exciting childrens activities, song and dance, as well as a range of fun workshops for young people. Other highlights will include a waterfront food and wine court, gypsy dancers and drummers, a fortune telling wagon, dragon boats, outrigger canoe demonstrations, roving music and street theatre, face painting and rides. For lovers of culture, arts and crafts, make sure you visit the Jetty Markets and woodcraft marquee in Anzac Place. The Redcliffe Art Society, the Redcliffe Spinners & Weavers, the Redcliffe and District Arts Council, Redcliffe Pottery Group and the Henzell Street Quilters will also have displays. Green Corps help with reserve makeover

New plants, walkways and signage will help rejuvenate an historically significant environmental reserve tucked between Sandstone Point and Godwin Beach.
Council, with the help of 20 young people from the federal governments youth development and environmental training program Green Corps, is working to transform Godwin Beach Environmental Reserve. The 26ha reserve of coastal lowlands, on the shores of Moreton Bay Marine Park, is recognised as one of the most significant archaeological sites in SouthEast Queensland and is home to more than 200 plant species and a diverse range of birds and native animals. Council, in consultation with representatives from the Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal people, is following a management plan to improve and maintain the reserve, which contains landmarks of deep cultural and spiritual significance to the local indigenous population. People who walk their dogs on leashes, birdwatch and fish will be able to continue using the area both while work is under way and completed. Green Corps youth will be onsite until late November, learning conservation, preservation and restoration techniques while they help with the reserves rejuvenation. Those interested in learning more will find information on councils website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

The Queensland Water Commission has advised that after recent rainfall and increasing dam levels, High Level Restrictions have been introduced and residents can cautiously step back from Level 6 water restrictions. As dam levels remain low, residents have been urged to continue being water wise. Business and industry must continue to use water efficiently by operating in accordance with Water Efficiency Management Plans, retrofitting with water efficient devices and following best practice guidelines where applicable.

Spring is here and its an ideal time to get the family out for a nature walk. From beaches to bushland, Moreton Bay region is home to a variety of scenic walking trails.
Mt Mee lies within the majestic DAguilar Range and offers many experiences including rocky waterholes, cool streams and rainforest walks. The Falls lookout can be reached by a gravel track from Neurum Creek Road and has a short circuit walk down to a viewing platform overlooking the northern side of DAguilar Range and picturesque Neurum Valley. The walk is a 1km circuit and can be completed in approximately 20 minutes. Another great trail in the Mt Mee State Forest is the Piccabeen walk.
