HIGHWAY CODE Rules with MUST/MUST NOT are legal requirements, and if you disobey you are committing

a criminal offence. May be fined, given penalty points on licence or disqualified from driving. Most serious cases may be sent to prison. Failure to comply with other rules will not cause person to be prosecuted but may be used in evidence in any court proceedings. RULES FOR PEDESTRIANS: General Guidance: 1. Pavements to be used if provided. Avoid being next to kerb with back to traffic. Before stepping on road, check both sides. 2. If no pavements, keep to right hand side of road. Take care and be prepared to walk in single file on narrow roads or in poor right, and to keep close to side of road. Safer to cross a right hand bend so oncoming traffic see you, cross back after the bend. 3. To help other road users see you, wear light coloured, bright or fluorescent. When dark, use reflective materials which can be seen by drivers using headlights up to three times as far away as non reflective materials. 4. Young children should not be alone on pavement or road. Keep between them and traffic and hold hand. Strap young children in push chairs or use reins. Do not push buggy into road when checking to see if its clear, particularly between parked vehicles. 5. Organised walks use pavement if possible. If not, keep to the left. Look outs to be positioned at the front and back of group, wear flourescent clothes in daylight and reflective at night. At night, look out in front should show white light and at the one a red light. 6. Pedestrians MUST NOT be on motorways or slip roads except in emergency. Crossing Road: 7. Green Cross Code First find a safe place to cross and where there is space to reach the pavement on the other side. Where there is a crossing nearby, use it. It is safer to cross using a subway, footbridge, an island, zebra, pelican, toucan or puffin crossing or where there is a crossing point controlled by a police officer, a school crossing patrol or a traffic warden. Avoid crossing between parked cars or on a blind bend, or close to the brow of a hill. Do not cross road diagonally. 8. Stop before you get to the kerb where you can see if anything is coming. Do not get too close to the traffic. If there is no pavement, keep back from the edge of the road but make sure you can still see approaching traffic. 9. Look all around for traffic and listen. 10. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Do not cross until safe gap in traffic and you are certain plenty of time. 11. When it is safe, go straight across the road do not run. Look for cyclists and motorcyclists traveling in between lanes. 12. When crossing the road, look for traffic turning into the road, especially from behind you. If you have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, you have priority and they should give way.

13. Only use Pedestrian Safety Barriers. Do not climb over barriers or walk between them and the road. 14. Tactile paving raised surfaces that can be felt underfoot provide warning and guidance to blind. Raised studs which used at crossing points with dropped kerb or a series of round raised bars which are used at level crossing, at the top and bottom of steps and at some other hazards. 15. On way streets bus and cycle lanes may operate in the opposite direction to rest of traffic. 16. Bus and cycle lanes . Traffic may be moving faster than in the other lanes or against flow of traffic. 17. Routes shared with cyclists Some cycle tracks run alongside footpath or payments, using a segregating feature to separate cyclists from people on foot. Segregated routes may have short lengths of tactile paving to help visually impaired people stay on correct side. On pedestrian side this is flat topped bars running across the direction of travel (ladder pattern). On cyclist side the same bars are oriented in direction of travel (tramline pattern). 18. Parked vehicles If you have to cross between parked cars, use the outside edges of the vehicle as if they were curb. Stop and make sure can see all around and traffic can see you. Make sure there is gap between any parked behicles on the other side so you can reach the pavement. Never cross the road in front of, or behind, any vehicle with its engine running as driver cannot see you. 19. Reversing vehicles never cross behind vehicle reversing, showing white reversing lights or sounding a warning. 20. MUST NO get onto or hold onto a moving vehicle. 21.
