Getting a ticket usually doesnt mean good news, but in the case of the Strathmore-Wheatland Addiction Teams (SWAT) Positive Ticketing programming it does. The Strathmore-Wheatland Addiction Team has embarked on a project thats catching on in the Alberta area, over what they call building youth assets, said Cpl. Duane White with the Strathmore RCMP. The goal is to have the enforcement people in town here catch young people doing good things, and reinforce that through the positive ticketing campaign. The RCMP and municipal officers are given the ticket books, with the goal of catching youth in the act of being a good citizen. It could be anything from helping somebody across the street, or bike safety or anything like that, its really just positive actions in the community, said Sarah McKinnon with SWAT. Most of the ones were for bike safety but theres other ones for cooperating in a police investigation and helping them out, anything positive. McKinnon, a Grade 10 Holy Cross Collegiate student, joined the team in October. Her role with SWAT is to make the follow up calls to the parents and families and ask what they think of the program, if they have used the ticket, if it affected their child in a positive way and if they think it should remain in the community. She said she is most often hearing that the parents are quite excited by it. The kids will come home excited and talking about getting a ticket and the parents at first dont know the positive side of it. There are also rewards for being caught in the act, such as a free pass to Jumphouse Gymnastics, The Aquatic Centre, The Family Centre, a Dairy Queen Blizzard and more. A majority of the so-called offenders are between the ages of seven and 13. Continued on Page 2

Scots Celebrate
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor If Robbie Burns were alive in 2012, he perhaps would have produced an independent CD or been a YouTube star. In 2009, a poll on Scottish Television (STV), voted him the greatest Scot of all time. In his time, he was thought to be a radical, a liberal and socialist, upholding the rights of the common man and the poor. In his songs and poems he often made fun of royalty and challenged the power structure of his time. In later years, his words were used in fights for equal rights. As a famous celebrity, his life is remembered worldwide by Scot descendants. On January 27, 2012, Burns was remembered in Strathmore by over 150 people in the Civic Centre. His fame has grown like a snowball, since his death. It gets bigger and bigger, said Worshipful Brother (WB) Rob Clark, a member of the Masons, who gave a biographical tribute to Burns called Immortal Memory. Other dignitaries included WB Eric Dousou (Gleichen #36 Masons), WB Larry McKinley and his wife (Strathmore #53 Masons) and The Grand First Principals of Alberta (MEC Jerry Kopp). the program. There were various toasts including one to the haggis, with and without Scotch whiskey. Haggis, tasting somewhat like dressing, was accompanied by roast beast, tatties and neeps (potatoes and turnips), peas, buns, and pickles, and cake for dessert. Many wore a flash of plaid and some wore full Scottish dress. The Burns Club Singers rounded off the evening with a chorus of Scottish songs. Many caught up with old friends and made a few new ones wishing them well with a goodbye verse. May there always be work for your hands to do; May your purse always hold a coin or two; May the sun always shine on your window-pane; May the hand of a friend always be near you; May your heart always fill with gladness to cheer you.

Pennies for MS
Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Setting their sights high, the staff at the Strathmore A&W have begun their newest campaign, A million pennies for MS. The Multiple Sclerosis Society is the charity of choice by all A&W locations, and every year the Strathmore location tries to outdo itself. After finding out their store was fourth in Canada for MS fundraising, the staff and management knew they could do better this year. We raised almost $8,000 last year, and we didnt really feel comfortable being fourth when we knew we could do so much better. We figured kicking it off with a $10,000 fundraiser was the perfect way to start this year, said manager Will Whatley. Last year we did a coin drive, we went door to door through some of the areas, just asking for spare pennies, something that one of my young lads thought of. Just over the weekend we raised almost $900 in pennies. While brainstorming fundraising ideas, the staff realized that people often have pennies sitting around which helped form the idea of collecting a million of them for MS. Im hoping to reach this goal in probably two months, I want to have my staff going door to door through the weekends, said Whatley. A portion of the proceeds, 50 per cent, will be going directly to the MS Society, and the other 50 per cent is going to help Debra Grouwstra build a wheelchair ramp at her home. Whatley said he had heard about Grouwstra from one of his former supervisors, and was told she had to spend most of last summer confined to her house because she was unable to make it up and down the stairs. She was looking for funds to build a ramp so I figured wed tie it together. Half the funds were going to raise will go then to the MS Society and the other half will go to re-

building the front of her house so that she has an access ramp to be able to get in and out of her house, said Whatley. They (the staff) are all pretty excited about finally getting it going and really trying to make a difference, especially now that were going to be able to make a difference in someones actual life as opposed to just giving money to the foundation. Fundraising has already begun, though Feb.1 was the official kick off. There are two coin jars at either side of the tills in A&W where people can donate their pennies, or any other spare change. A number of other fundraising events will take place later in the year, including a flea market, street hockey, the Kiddie Carnival and of course MS day on Aug. 30.

Finally completing and publishing the childrens book he had written a few years ago is just one more thing Strathmore resident Cory Johnson can cross off of his bucket list. The book, Sunny Days, the flower with the difference, follows the story of Sunny the sunflower, who is different from the other flowers in the garden, and the blue eyed girl who was created to look like Johnsons daughter Emma. One of the reasons why I choose flowers is because it doesnt really relate to anybody or any race or colour. Flowers are not discriminating in anyway, and everybody likes sunflowers, said Johnson. I dont know what exactly is out there on differences, I didnt do a lot of research, I just know its something that we need to learn to celebrate and work together to realize that a difference is okay, and how we offer each
other all this stuff. Sunny is distraught because he is not like the other flowers, and he feels he needs to be more like them. The story illustrates Sunny realizing his differences are what make him special, and that he does have a lot to offer to the garden. Johnson is a motivational speaker who has Cerebral Palsy, and has never let it get him down. Johnson is also a full time father, Kiwanis Club Governor Elect for Western Canada and is currently training to compete for a spot in the Paralympics. The main thing with my speaking is turning disabilities into possibilities, thats what its about is seeing the possibilities in people, even though Sunny is not disabled hes just different. I believe we are all born normal and we are born exactly the way we were meant to be, said Johnson. It gives you a moral that no matter how different people are they can still fit

in, you dont have to judge based off of looks, said Brendon Berry, Johnsons son. Berry feels the book is like a replay of the speech only for kids, and said the speech alone had already made an impact on him and how he views other people. Johnson is still working to shave a little more time
off his running speed for the Paralympics. He is also planning to write a book for youth between the ages of eight and 14, and said he is working on revising his first book Im not drunk, Im disabled. Anyone interested in a purchasing a copy of the book can go to www.coryjohnson.ca.

When the analytical and the creative sides of the brain work together, better solutions are born. We call that whole brain thinkingand we do a lot of that here. Because people who think like whole-brainers are way more likely to come up with creative solutions. Seriously, its who we look for at ATB, because its exactly what Alberta needs. Groundhog Day
The groundhog, often called a woodchuck, is the only mammal to have a day named in his honor. The groundhogs day is February 2. Granted, its not a legal holiday; nobody gets off work. But still, to have a day named after you is quite a feat. How did the groundhog come by this honor? It stems from the ancient belief that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence. The German immigrants known as Pennsylvania Dutch brought the tradition to America in the 18th century. They had once regarded the badger as the winter-spring barometer. But the job was reassigned to the groundhog after importing their Candlemas traditions to the U.S. Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of Jesus. Candlemas is one of the four cross-quarters of the year, occurring half way between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. Traditionally, it was believed that if Candlemas was sunny, the remaining six weeks of winter would be stormy and cold. But if it rained or snowed on Candlemas, the rest of the winter would be mild. If an animal sees its shadow, it must be sunny, so more wintry weather is predicted: The groundhog and badger were not the only animals that have been used to predict spring. Other Europeans used the bear or hedgehog-but in any case the honor belonged to a creature that hibernated. Its emergence symbolized the imminent arrival of spring. Traditionally, the groundhog is supposed to awaken on February 2, Groundhog Day, and come up out of his burrow. If he sees his shadow, he will return to the burrow for six more weeks of winter. If he doesnt see his shadow, he remains outside and starts his year, because he knows that spring has arrived early. Springs arrives on or near March 21, so whether the groundhog decides to return to his den or remain above ground, the sad fact is spring will always have to wait at least six more weeks.

Did You Know?
Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate? Hibernation is not just a deep sleep, but actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows and breathing nearly stops. Insects dont bother groundhogs and germs pretty much leave them alone? They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason is for their cleanliness. The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 15 lbs and is 22 inches long. Their diet consists of lots of greens and fruits & vegetables.

In todays society, understanding technology is very important, which is why the Strathmore Municipal Library is offering free technology courses over the next couple of months. Jessie Bach will be running the technology courses until the end of March. I have had a few people come in just looking for some basic help, sort of getting stuff started using the Internet and effective Google searching and that sort of thing, said Bach. It seems like everybody got e-readers for Christmas so I have been spending lots of time with people, just sort of helping them get their e-readers set up and learn how to take books out of the library. There are a number of courses being offered beginning in February, and though they are free, some of them do require the participants to have a library card. There is also the option of setting up some one-on-one time for those who dont feel a coursestyle session will provide them the help they need. The big thing with that is if people dont find a course that appeals to them, or if they are a really basic beginner that needs help with a mouse and keyboard and maybe couldnt keep up that kind of thing, said Bach. They could really come in for any sort of computer help they need, my only restriction is I dont do com-
puter repair and I really dont want to mess with any viruses. Some of the courses being offered include using e-readers, e-books, Overdrive, and e-resources. There will also be a getting started course with Microsoft Word, and Facebook for beginners. Career cruising, thats another online resource that we have but its super handy. It profiles a whole bunch of jobs and it gives you tests to figure out what youre best at, like a real life job bank is on there too. Im hoping to get the students out for that one, well see, said Bach. She doesnt teach about Twitter but says she thinks the biggest mistake people make is, they go onto Twitter thinking it is like Facebook and try to find their friends and have conversations. At least for me it didnt work like that. I use Twitter to follow a whole bunch of new sites, like CTV Calgary, CBC, the Calgary Herald and things like that. I also follow a lot of library industry stuff, like all the professional associations and any librarian I can find on there I make sure and follow. Its kind of where I do my professional networking and also news surfing, said Bach. Registering in advance for courses is recommended since there is limited space. More information can either by dropping in, checking out the website at www.strathmorelibrary.ca or by calling 403-934-5440.

Strathmore and Wheatland Countys newest one stop shop fitness website (www.wheatlandfitness.ca) is almost ready to go, and will hopefully launch by Valentines Day. Im looking for all instructors, so anybody who teaches Karate, Tae Kwon Dowould be beneficial to it, said Tracy Stokoe. Im looking for all ranges, so kids, adult, older adults, everything. Its meant to be a multiuse website thats user friendly to everybody, that they can find out (about) clubs in the area, drop-in classes and registered classes. The website is meant to be a one stop shop for all things fitness and rec-
reation in Strathmore and Wheatland County. Instructors interested in adding their classes to the site are being asked to provide a copy of their certification. Stokoe said it is so they can ensure people are finding an instructor who is properly certified to provide the training they are offering. The website will be an interactive site with blogs, contests and an up-todate calendar of events. Community fitness events, such as the Childrens Wish Foundations Walk for Wishes, will also be advertised on the site. We hope to get everybody moving and having fun, said Stokoe. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact wheatlandfitness@ gmail.com.
The Strathmore Theatre players hosted a showcase of talent on Friday and Saturday night at the Theatre in the Strathmore High School to raise awareness of the group and different avenues available in the town for those interested in the Arts. The organization is completely volunteer driven and there are a variety of opportunities for people to get involved. Each production requires a number of people in a variety of roles so whatever your interests, they can always use and grow your talents. A few of the highlights from the evening included a quirky play about courtship, marriage and reconciliation called Canker Sores and Other Distractions; an anthology of plays by American Playwright Christopher Durang, whose vibrant characters included Prunella, played by Laura Bakken, waitress Midge played well by Doug Keeling and Martin played by Mike Ell. One of the guild members, Michael Newton, who MCd the event went on to say that the three actors were similar to a combination of Richard Dreyfuss, Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman. Following this short play the Strathmore Childrens Choir (SCC) performed two pieces called The Jones Boys and Sound The Trumpet led by their Choral Director Loralee Laycock. Laycock directs three separate choirs in Strathmore, Bravo (Kinder-
garten Grade 1), Encore (Grade 2 - 6) and Finale (Grade 7 and up). SCCs mandate is to give all children the opportunity to experience the joy that music can bring in a fun, safe, friendly learning environment. Music touches the hearts of those who hear it in a unique way, and their hope is that the music our children learn through singing in a choir will remain in their hearts forever. Laycock also performed with her two daughters, RaeAnne (10) and Shelby (8) in an acappella rendition of Blue Moon. For more information on becoming a part of Strathmore childrens Choir contact can be made through www. strathmorechildrenschoir.com Guild Members Angela Reeves and Doug Keeling prepared a beautiful duet of the song Lets Call The Whole Thing Off. Their chemistry on the stage through acting was also very evident in their ability to perform in this other genre. Tanya Wolff (Co-Chair of the Guild) gave a dramatic choral performance of Into The Woods, complete with costuming. Ice Cats played two games this past weekend and finished even. Saturday, Jan. 28 brought the Indus Black Novice team to Strathmore. The Ice Cats were ready to claw out a win to continue their stellar season. When the whistle sounded the Ice Cats showed the true spirit of TEAM. The Ice Cat passing was mesmerizing as they were able to score seven goals in the first period. When the second period started the Ice Cats were up 7-1. Our netminder, Mackenzie Hansen, was strong in net as the second period saw Indus only getting three more goals. When the final buzzer sounded, the Ice Cats left the arena with a 13-4 win. Sunday the Ice Cats took on their rival Strathmore Ice Devils. Playing against friends and past teammates is always fun and exciting for everyone. The Ice Cats came out and gave it their all, down a few teammates of their own. Passing and defense was solid although were no match for the Ice Devils who allowed very few shots on their net. The scoreboard showed 6-2 in favour of the Ice Devils after the first period. With a little pep talk between periods the Ice Cats were reenergized; adding five more goals to the scoreboard. When the final buzzer rang, the Ice Cats fell short of taking a win home with a final score of 11 7. Weekend goals were scored by Mackenzie Duggan, Ainsley Olson, Justine Larson, Cayley Boschee, Shelby Lane, Reagan Bogusky, Makayla Grant, Payton Jensen. Assists and strong play goes to Tessa Davidson, Hannah Arsenault, Laura Sader, Avery Aleman, and Megan Brooks. All you Ice Cats show the true sense of teamwork! The Jan. 21st weekend was also very busy the for the Ice Cats playing two games as well. Saturday the 21st took the Ice Cats to Indus to play Indus Yellow. The Ice Cats were ready to show off some moves from their past practice. Tessa Davidson was resilient in net and was able to hold the team in the game. When the final buzzer sounded the Ice Cats were able to drive home with a win of 9-7. The following day, Sunday the 22nd brought Cochrane to the Strathmore Family centre. The first period ended with 4-0 score in favour of the Ice Cats. When the ring was put down at Centre Ice for the second period, Cochrane came out with all barrels, scoring 6 of their own goals. Final buzzer sounded the Ice Cats were able to hold Cochrane to a tie 6-6. Past weekend goals were scored by Ainsley Olson, Cayley Boschee, Justine Larson, Mackenzie Hansen, Reagan Bogusky and Megan Brooks. Strathmore Lacrosse
The 2012 Red Coats for Kids charity hockey tournament was in Strathmore from Jan. 25 to 27.
www.strathmorelacrosse.com
Over 200 RCMP members laced up their hockey skates Jan. 25 to 27 to participate in the Red Coats for Kids charity hockey tournament. Though Strathmore didnt have enough players to fill its own team, members did play on the Calgary and area team to show their support. The organizing committee gets to choose the charity, so this year we choose the schools in. (In) years past it has been Victim Services, or Boys and Girls Clubs stuff like that, said Vince Olson, with the Strathmore RCMP. Its Red Coats for
Kids and what better place to give money to the kids than schools, that was our thoughts anyway. Over $15,000 was raised for Strathmore schools, which will be disbursed between them to be used in athletic departments. Members came from all over Alberta to play in the tournament. Its good for the community in terms of fundraising, you just kind of say yes we could put it on, and they say yes you can have it. No bid or anything like that, its just a matter of requesting the opportunity to host it, said Olson. It may be a number of years before Strathmore sees the tournament return. Olson said the committee for the Alberta Tournament tries to spread it out so that every community may get a chance to host it if they choose to do so. Next year Whitecourt, Alberta will be hosting the annual tournament.
