Introducing pxl SmartScale

INTRODUCING SMARTSCALE
Welcome to Extensis pxl SmartScale, a powerful scaling plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. SmartScale includes the most advanced scaling technology available and makes it easy to use with an intuitive interface.

With SmartScale, you can resize digital images up to 1600% of the original size with no discernable loss in print quality. The resulting scaled image maintains the quality and details of the original. SmartScale gives you the ability to easily choose scale settings and immediately preview the results. You no longer need to wait through long processing periods only to find out that an image didnt scale as expected.

WHAT IS IMAGE RESAMPLING?

When you scale an image from one size to another, the original image data is analyzed, interpolated and recreated at the new size. When the scaled image is created, SmartScale creates new pixels based upon the original pixels. This process is called image resampling. The PixelLive technology included in SmartScale resamples your image. Since every image is unique, SmartScale gives you the power to refine the scale details so you get a high quality scaled image every time.

HOW DOES SMARTSCALE WORK?

Using the PixelLive technology, SmartScale creates superior quality scaled images by preserving the brightness and color data of the original image. SmartScale analyzes the original image and stores the brightness and color information in a mathematical equation. SmartScale resamples the image to the new size and then applies the color and brightness information to the scaled image. The final result is a superior quality scaled image.

WHY DO I NEED SMARTSCALE?

In a world of digital images, frequently only one size of image is available, and obtaining a higher quality image can be time-consuming, inconvenient, or impossible. If you are a photographer, graphic designer or printing professional you know how common it is to resize images and reuse them for different outputs. For example, an image may be used for a postcard sized direct mail piece as well as a large poster.

ABOUT THIS USER GUIDE

The Extensis pxl SmartScale User Guide makes extensive use of links that function only when viewing the guide with Adobe Acrobat Reader software, version 5 or higher. The guide can be read in other PDF document readers such as Apple Preview, but the navigational aids, bookmarks pane and live links either do not exist or will not be usable. For these reasons, we recommend use of Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 or higher with all SmartScale PDF documentation. A free copy of the latest Acrobat Reader can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com. Live links in this guide include all page number entries in the Table of Contents and Index, and wherever text is displayed in this style elsewhere in the guide. In Acrobat Reader, the cursor will change to a pointing hand when over a link, and to a pointing hand with a w or plus sign when over a link to a site on the World Wide Web, or an e-mail address. Bulleted lists contain alternate ways of performing the task being explained. Numbered lists contain sequences of steps that should be performed in order.

SCALING AN IMAGE
Powered by the most advanced scaling technology available, SmartScale offers an easy, intuitive way to scale images up to 1600% with no discernible loss in print quality. SmartScales intuitive interface allows you to preview scaling results on the fly and get the high-quality results that you require.

Pixel Dimensions The Pixel Dimensions group box displays the current pixel width and height of the image. These dimensions are determined by the current document size and resolution. Scale Slider Use the scale slider to quickly enlarge or reduce an image. Click and drag the scale slider to choose a scale value. Since the SmartScale window shows an immediate preview of the scaled image, this is by far the quickest way to view the results of scaling. Document Size The Document Size group box shows you the current printed dimensions and resolution of the image. This information is also used to calculate the Pixel Dimensions and file size of an image. Typically, images are scaled by entering a new resolution, as well as a width or height. The image aspect ratio is always preserved during scaling, so when you enter one dimension, the other adjusts automatically. The new size information can be entered in a variety of measurements, including a percentage. Resample Image

Image Size palette

The Image Size palette controls all image scaling. The controls allow you to precisely scale an image up to 1600% of the original size.

The maximum amount that you can scale an image is limited to 1600% or 30,000 pixels in either dimension, whichever is reached first. The 30,000 pixel limit is the maximum dimension allowed in Adobe Photoshop.

This check box turns scaling on and off. Typically this box is checked. Uncheck this box if you want to adjust the document size without changing the pixel dimensions. Reset Button This button resets the pixel dimensions, document size and resolution to the original settings. The Reset button does not reset any image cropping.

REFINING THE IMAGE QUALITY WITH THE DETAIL PALETTE

SmartScales advanced scaling algorithm gives you the power to refine the quality of the scaled image. You can control the Overall Sharpness, Edge Contrast, Edge Detail, and also apply the Extreme Edges effect. To effectively refine a scaled image, it is important to understand the concept of an edge. Basically, edges are areas of an image where significant color changes occur. For example, in a silhouette the dramatic change from dark to light is considered an edge. Scaling an image creates an entirely new set of pixels for the scaled image. SmartScale uses the PixelLive technology to make a number of decisions about how to create those new pixels. The Detail palette settings allow you to control these decisions and refine the overall quality of the scaled image. To begin refining the scaled image, click the Adjust Scaled Image check box to activate the detail controls. When the detail settings are changed, the image preview is updated immediately to show the effect of each change on the scaled image.
Detail controls are only effective on images that have been scaled up. Adjust scale settings before choosing Detail settings. To improve the preview speed of a scaled image, you may wish to temporarily disable the detail controls. To do so, uncheck the Adjust Scaled Image check box.

Overall Sharpness
This controls how much SmartScale sharpens or blurs the scaled image. The four settings range in increments from Sharp to Smoother. The Sharp setting provides the least amount of smoothing to the scaled image, while Smoother applies the most.

APPLYING AND SAVING SMARTSCALE PRESETS

SmartScale presets are saved document size, resolution and detail settings. If you are scaling a large number of images to the same size and resolution, saving the settings to a preset will speed up your workflow. You can apply a default preset or create and save your own.
Fit to preset dimension (no clipping will occur) - This option fits the entire image into the scaled image and expands the image canvas to the preset dimensions. Any area of the canvas not filled with the scaled image is filled with the current background color in Photoshop. Fill preset dimension (clipping will occur) - This option scales the image to the preset height or width and clips or fills the canvas to the preset width or height.

Applying presets
Applying presets is as simple as choosing an item from a menu. To apply a preset: 1. Open an image in SmartScale. 2. Choose a SmartScale preset from the Preset drop down menu located on the lower left of the SmartScale window. 3. Click Apply or Import to scale the image and return it to Photoshop. If a preset value forces an image to a new aspect ratio, SmartScale warns you and gives you two choices for how to proceed.

Default presets
The default presets are commonly used scale settings, and set the scale of the image to common document sizes. To use a default preset, choose it from the Preset drop down menu. The following document size presets are installed with SmartScale:

Saving presets
Saving a preset can help you automate frequent scaling tasks. To save a preset: 1. Open an image in SmartScale. 2. Choose scale and detail settings. 3. Choose File > Save Preset As... or Press Command+S (Mac) or Ctrl+S (Win) 4. Enter a preset name in the dialog box and click OK. The new preset is added to the Preset drop down box.

Sharing presets
Since presets are saved as files, you can copy and share them with other users. To do so, copy the preset file from your SmartScale presets folder and put them into the other users preset folder. The preset files are saved in a directory named pxl SmartScale Presets. The location of this directory varies with the operating system. To locate preset files, use the search feature of your operating system to locate the directory.
When SmartScale is installed on a Macintosh system, default presets are installed in the preferences folder for only the current OS. For example, if SmartScale is installed on OS X, the default presets are installed in the OS X preferences folder. Photoshop 6 running in classic mode searches for presets in the OS 9 preference folder. Therefore, default presets are not available unless you copy the preference files from one preference folder to another. New presets that you create are not affected.

Deleting presets
To delete a preset: 1. Open an image in SmartScale. 2. Choose File > Preferences... 3. Click the Presets tab 4. Click to highlight the preset name. 5. Press the Delete key to remove the preset.
Presets are unique to each user, and therefore are unique to each Windows and Mac login name. Creating a new preset does so only for the current user on a machine.

SAVING THE RESULTS

From SmartScale you can either apply the results to the image in Photoshop or export the scaled image to a file. 4. After the file is exported, you are returned to SmartScale. You can continue to modify the image in SmartScale, or click Cancel to return to Photoshop.
SmartScale does not support exporting alpha channels. Image formats that contain alpha channels are written, but do not contain an alpha channel. To scale alpha channels, scale images with the Scale Current Image command from the Extensis menu.

Sending the results to Photoshop

If you scaled an image that was already open in Photoshop, click Apply to apply the results to the image in Photoshop. If you are scaling an image from a file, click Import to scale the file and open it in Photoshop.

Metadata support
SmartScale supports metadata that is supported by Photoshop. When scaling the current image in Photoshop all metadata is retained.
In Windows, Photoshop 7 supports metadata for TIFF, JPEG, EPS and PDF files. On the Mac, Photoshop 7 supports metadata for all file types. Photoshop 6 does not support EXIF or XMP metadata.

After the image is open in Photoshop, it can be saved in any file format supported by Photoshop.
The PixelLive (VFZ) file format can be used for superior lossless image compression. Use the PixelLive protected (PFZ) file format to add password protection.

Exporting from SmartScale

SmartScale can export an image to a file, without returning the results to Photoshop. SmartScale can export the following file formats: PixelLive (VFZ), PixelLive protected (PFZ), JPEG, TIFF, BMP and PNG. To export from SmartScale: 1. Open an image in SmartScale - you can use an image already open in Photoshop or import a file from disk. 2. Choose File > Export As...
You can also hold down the Option (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) key to change the Apply and Import buttons to an Export button. Click the Export button to export the file and exit SmartScale.

When images are imported by or exported from SmartScale, only the following types of metadata are supported. Support is based upon the file type. File Type PixelLive (VFZ) PixelLive protected (PFZ) TIFF JPEG IPTC XMP EXIF

Reverting the image

You can easily revert any changes to an image. Reverting resets the pixel dimensions and document size to the original settings, and also undoes any image cropping. To revert an image to the original: 1. Choose File > Revert

3. In the Save dialog box, enter a file name, choose a file format and click Save.

THE PIXELLIVE AND PIXELLIVE PROTECTED FILE FORMATS Powerful file compression
SmartScale has a powerful built-in compression file format, PixelLive (VFZ). This file format is a compressed format that provides visually lossless compression for images. You have a choice of six compression levels to fit your varying file size and quality needs. Even at the highest quality level, PixelLive files are reduced to about 60% of comparable TIFF file size. Image files at this quality level can be converted from another file format into PixelLive files and then back to the original file format without any loss in quality. The highest compression level produces proof quality images that are easily emailed.

Saving a PixelLive file

SmartScale gives you the option to save images in PixelLive format directly from Photoshop, or export them from SmartScale. To save a PixelLive file from Photoshop: 1. Choose File > Save As or Press Command+Shift+S (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows) 2. In the Save dialog, name the file and choose PixelLive (VFZ) from the Format drop down box. 3. Click Save. 4. In the Quality Level dialog box, drag the quality slider to the desired compression and click OK.

Password protection
A layer of password protection is added with the PixelLive protected (PFZ) file format. PixelLive protected files can be saved from Photoshop or SmartScale. Password authentication in PixelLive protected files can be stored locally with the file, or on a server. Local protection embeds one username and password in the image file. Server protection uses a PixelSafe server to store and verify security information on a server. This technology allows server administrators to selectively give view and modification rights to groups of users. Support for PixelSafe servers is built into SmartScale. The software to run a PixelSafe server and create user identities is sold separately. For more information, please contact info@extensis.com.

Troubleshooting
MEMORY MANAGEMENT
SmartScale uses your computers physical and virtual memory to store and scale images. Unlike the use of scratch disks by Photoshop to supplement physical RAM, SmartScale uses the same virtual memory that your operating system uses. The allocation of RAM and configuring of virtual memory varies with each system configuration. The following pages explain how to allocate RAM and increase virtual memory settings for all supported operating systems.
For optimal performance, it is recommended that the Photoshop scratch disk be created on a drive that does not contain the virtual memory of the operating system.

Image height and width The height and width in pixels is displayed in the Pixel Dimensions group box of the Image Size palette. Channels This is the number of channels, not including any alpha channels. This can be found on the channels palette in Photoshop. Do not count the combined channel at the top of the list.

How much memory do I need?

The amount of memory that SmartScale uses varies by the size of the original image and how much the image is being scaled. Basically, youll want to have as much physical RAM and as large of a virtual memory space as possible. With a fairly simple formula you can calculate an estimate of the memory requirements. The memory (in MB) required by SmartScale= (Original image height x width x channels) + (Scaled image height x width x (channels +1)) 1,000,000 The following are numbers of channel for supported image types:
CMYK 4 channels RGB 3 channels Grayscale 1 channel

Troubleshooting

Mac OS X native
If you are running an OS X native version of Photoshop (version 7 or higher), your memory is managed by the operating system. OS X creates virtual memory on the startup disk of your computer, and can use up to 4 GB if necessary. To ensure that SmartScale has enough memory, make sure that there is a large amount of free space on the startup disk.

Mac OS 9
Like other classic applications, Photoshop running in OS 9 requires you to allocate sufficient memory for SmartScale to run smoothly. To supplement your physical RAM, it is also highly recommended that you turn virtual memory on. To allocate more memory to Photoshop: 1. Locate the Photoshop application in the Finder. 2. Highlight the icon and press Command+I to open the Info dialog box.

THE EXTENSIS MENU Why cant I see the Extensis menu in my copy of Photoshop?
The Extensis menu is available in Photoshop 6.01 and later as long as the correct files are installed. Confirm that the Extensis Library file is present in your Plug-ins folder.

The Extensis menu is present, but SmartScale is not in the menu list
Check that the following files are installed in the proper locations: For Macintosh:

Are there other ways to access SmartScale besides the Extensis menu?
You can access SmartScale from the Extensis menu, but can also access the equivalent commands from the Import and Automate menus in Photoshop. The equivalent to Extensis > Scale Image from File... is File > Import Extensis pxl SmartScale 1.0.... The equivalent to Extensis > Scale Current Image... File > Automate > pxl SmartScale 1.0.... For Windows:

Photoshop Elements does not include an Adobe Photoshop Only folder, therefore the Extensis Library and pxl SmartScale 1.0 folder should be installed directly inside the Plug-ins folder.

Check that the language version of Photoshop that you are operating is the same as the language version of SmartScale. For instance, the Extensis menu will appear in the French version of Photoshop, but pxl SmartScale 1.0 will not show up in the Extensis menu if you are running the English version of SmartScale.
