Running head: POLICE REVIEW

Police Review In my individual portion of my group project, we will discuss the matter regarding citizens reviewing police officers. We will begin with the first question of this task.

Should officers be evaluated by a civilian review board? Why or why not? It is my firm belief that police officers should be reviewed by the citizens they have sworn to protect. In November of 2000, the author, International Association of Chief of Police talks about a civilian review board for sworn police officers. The author goes on to say, that the concept of a citizen review was proposed in 1935, but in the 1940s and 1950s these review boards were in place in the following 2 cities, and they are, New York City, and in Philadelphia (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2000). Although, the type of review was somewhat abolished in the 1960s, which the reason was not known to the public (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2000). The US Department of Justice even endorsed the idea of having a citizen review board, the question is, why is it not in use today? Could it be the police department does not want a citizen review board, because of their code of silence they have, or is it more than that? A lot of speculation goes through the mind as to why they do not have a review board in place.

What are the potential advantages and disadvantages of civilian review boards with regard to officer complaints? Explain. The advantages and disadvantages to a civilian review boards with regard to officer complaints. We will look at the advantages, the one advantage; the citizens will have some to say

in regards, to the officer that is being reviewed, in the following categories as outlined by the citizens of the review board (Mohr, 2007). The author goes on to say, that the performance management is considered an organizational management style, which may rely on the empirical evidence, in regards, to the policy and the program accomplishments to connect goals, and in addition to priorities to desired outcomes (Mohr, 2007). Hence, it has been discovered that the civilian oversight and the civil rights movement, when, the National Association for the Colored People, or the NAACP for short was formed back in the year of 1909 (Mohr, 2007).

In retrospect of the officers receiving a review is good, because this way, it will let the officer know, that the citizens are keeping an eye out on officers work performance on the job. After all, they are sworn officers to protect the citizens of the community they are supposed to protect. Serve and protect is what they should do. Although, over the years, it has taken a backseat, and for some reasons as to why; no one will actually know why; the citizens deserved to be protected, and that is exactly what they should receive, and nothing less.
