1) Segregation is the physical and social separation of dominant and minority groups. An example of segregation would be the racial segregation in the south during World War II. There were separate bathrooms, fountains, schools and everything else where whites and blacks could cross paths. Assimilation is defined as the process of conforming to the culture of the dominant of the dominant group and intermarrying that group. Assimilation is seen in most immigrants who come to America, for example there are some Asians who do not speak their native language and adopt Americans cultures and rituals. Pluralism is minority groups that retain their culture but have equal social standing in society. An example of this would be if the same Asian family I just mentioned adapted to American culture rather than adopt the culture entirely. The family may know english, yet they still speak their native language and follow the culture they come from. 2) The seven forms of marriage that exist in most cultures are devitalized couples, financially focused couples, conflicted couples, traditional couples, balanced couples, harmonious couples, and vitalized couples. Devitalized marriages are usually unhappy and have considered divorce, very critical of each other. Usually young minority couples who stay together for lack of alternatives. Financially focused marriages are dissatisfied with the personal characteristics of their partner and Their careers come before the relationship, and money or financial rewards hold them together. Their single relationship strength is financial management. Conflicted marriages have personality issues, communication, conflict resolution, and sexuality issues and they avoid or fail to settle issues between them. Instead, they focus on and gain satisfaction from outside experiences such as leisure, the children, religious life. Traditional marriages are moderately satisfied with many relationship elements, while their sexual relationship and the way they communicate are sources of distress. They are not as critical of each as the others. Their strength lies in a satisfying religious life and good interaction with extended family and friends. The marriages are relatively stable and couples are usually older, married longer and white. Balanced marriages are somewhat satisfied with most relationship areas, with real strengths in communication and problem-solving. The biggest problem is financial management. They have higher than average agreement on leisure, child-rearing, and sexuality and value the nuclear family. Harmonious marriages are highly satisfied with each other, the expression of affection, and their sexual life and are self-centered, viewing children as a stress factor. Vitalized marriages are very satisfied and are pleased with most aspects of the relationship.they resolve issues well, from intact families and are economically better off than most. Tend to be older, married longer, white, Protestant and in their first marriage. 3) Reverend Thomas believes that sooner or later there will be too many people on earth and not enough food to feed everyone. To remedy this problem people should not get married so early, that way couples are likely to have less children.

5) So many Americans view asian as the model minority because they make up only 5 % of the US population. The title can be misleading because many households are larger than the average and include more workers. Asians are a threat in the workplace because they have more CEOs than any other minority and they own many businesses. 7) The three dimensions of social stratification are wealth prestige and power. Wealth is accumulated overtime, produces income and increases over time. Prestige is more of a criteria based social status. Power is the ability to maintain an influence over others. The most important to me in my experience is wealth because the only way to go is forward when you are wealthy. The money continues to roll in and prestige and power can be fleeting. For example Barack Obama has power and prestige yet when his term is over, he may not be elected again so he wont have as much power. If he does something wrong his image is shattered, yet if he has wealth that is one thing that will never be an issue, money. His children and grandchildren will have absolutely nothing to worry about because the money will only multiply. 8) Endogamy is the practice of selecting mates from within ones group. For example a wealthy woman marrying another wealthy man. Exogamy is the practice of selecting mates from outside ones group. For example if Oprah Winfrey married a carpenter then this would be an example of exogamy because they are not in the same group at all. Extended family is defined as a form of family which consists of parents and children as well as other kin such as uncles and aunts , nieces and nephews and grandparents. An example of an extended family would be a family reunion where everyone who is related meets up at one place for a celebration. Everyone from Aunts, to Step-Grandparents attend, allowing everyone to meet and mingle with their extended family. 9) Five manifest functions of education are: 1) socialization 2) transmits knowledge and culture 3) increases cultural integration 4) cultural innovation 5) benefits taxpayers. Five latent functions are: 1) provide child care 2) social service centers 3) matchmaking institutions 4)decreases job competition and is good for business 5) create social networks 10) Closed stratifications are social categories based on heredity. An example would be a caste, if you were born in a caste of poor people, that is where you stayed forever. On the other hand Open stratification is more of an achieved status, therefore you can jump social classes depending on how hard you work to get there. For example, you may start off as a mail clerk and end up running the New Jersey branch of the post office. 11) Same sex marriage should be legal because 1) same sex marriages would benefit religious organizations both spiritually and emotionally and bolster membership. 2) Every person should be able to marry someone they love. 3) There is no scientific study that show children raised by gays are worse off than if raised

by homosexual parents. 3)It would be easier for sam sex couples to adopt children, especially those wit emotional and physical disabilities. 4) Attitudes and laws change. until 1967, interracial marriages were prohibited. 5) Gay marriages would strengthen families with long term unions and children would be better off with parents who are legally married. Same sex marriages should be illegal because 1) Same sex marriages would polarize church members who are opposed to gay unions and decrease congregation size. 2) children may imitate the behavior going on in the home. 3) people can love each other without getting married 4) There are no scientific studies that say children function better with gay parents. 5) All adopted children are better off with parents who can provide heterosexual parents as role models.
