Dear E l d e r W i e l a n d , I was v e r y g l a d t o r e c e i v e Mrs. W h i t e ' s l e t t e r t o E l d e r Washburn. I f e e l t h a t t h e words " d i v i n e body" i n h e r l e t t e r e n t e r s i n t o a t r u t h s h e w r o t e J u l y 9, 1895 i n t h e Review. "The E t e r n a l F a t h e r , t h e u n c h a n g e a b l e One, gave h i s o n l y b e g o t t e n Son, t o r e from H i s bosom Him who was made i n t h e e x p r e s s image o f H i s P e r s o n . " I s e n t t h i s quote t o a r e t i r e d G. C. man l i v i n g i n t h e West, he would n o t comment, b u t s e n t t o t h e White e s t a t e f o r t h e a n s w e r . I have had t h i s same e x p e r i e n c e w i t h o t h e r s t a t e m e n t s I have s e n t t o l e a d e r s i n b o t h e d u c a t i o n and a d m i n i s t r a t i v e i n s t i t u t i o n s o f our c h u r c h . I t h a s o c c u r e d t o me by t h i s , t h a t t h e White e s t a t e and R e s e a r c h Committee h a s become an i m p o r t a n t v o i c e o f t h e c h u r c h . Has i t become d a n g e r o u s f o r a p e r s o n t o v o i c e h i s p e r s o n a l convictions? I f e e l t h a t t h e words "was made" i n t h e J u l y 9, 1895 quote does n o t mean o u t o f n o t h i n g : b u t i t means, "was made," from t h e F a t h e r ' s P e r s o n , w h i c h d o e s n o t c o n t r a d i c t "was begotten." T h i s one s t a t e m e n t a l o n e w r i t t e n by i n s p i r a t i o n , blows t h e p r e s e n t T r i u n e h y p o t h e s i s , t a u g h t a t p r e s e n t i n our c h u r c h , o u t o f e x i s t e n c e . No wonder t h a t t h i s quote o f J u l y 9, 1895 c o u l d n ' t be r i g h t l y e x p l a i n e d . I t was b e c a u s e t h e b r e t h e n t r i e d t o l o o k a t i t t h r o u g h t h r e e smokey eye g l a s s e s a t once i n s t e a d o f a p p l y i n g t h e e y e - s a l v e spoken by o u r L o r d i n Revelation. I'm s o r r y t o s a y t h a t I have n o t been h e l p e d even o n c e , by t h e a n s w e r s g i v e n t o me by t h e s e two i n s t i t u t i o n s . F o r g i v e me i f I sound h a r s h , I o n l y have l o v e f o r a l l i n my soul. I w i l l send you a n o t h e r q u o t e t h a t p a s s e d t h r o u g h t h e same c h a n n e l s o n l y i t s t a r t e d and ended w i t h d i f f e r e n t hands. "Never b e f o r e had a n g e l s l i s t e n e d t o s u c h p r a y e r a s C h r i s t o f f e r e d a t h i s b a p t i s m , and t h e y were s o l i c i t o u s t o be t h e b e a r e r s o f t h e message from t h e F a t h e r t o h i s Son. B u t no, d i r e c t from t h e F a t h e r i s s u e s t h e l i g h t o f h i s g l o r y . The h e a v e n s were opened, and beams o f g l o r y r e s t e d upon t h e Son o f God, and assumed t h e form o f a dove i n a p p e a r a n c e l i k e burnished gold. The d o v e - l i k e form was emblematic o f t h e meekness and g e n t l e n e s s o f C h r i s t . Not w i t h s t a n d i n g t h e Son o f God was c l o t h e d w i t h humanity y e t J e h o v a h w i t h h i s own v o i c e a s s u r e s him o f h i s s o n s h i p w i t h t h e E t e r n a l . T h a t w h i c h I d e s i r e d o f t h e b r e t h r e n was an answer w h i c h would harmonize w i t h a p h r a s e i n t h e book E v a n g e l i s m , " t h e r e a r e t h r e e l i v i n g p e r s o n s o f t h e h e a v e n l y t r i o , " f o r I am u n a b l e t o g r a s p t h r e e p e r s o n a l c o - e q u a l , c o - e v a l gods. The answer s e n t to me was s o f a r non-committal and d i s c o n n e c t e d t h a t my h e a r t was made s a d . "Thousands ( o f S e v e n t h Day A d v e n t i s t s ) have a f a l s e c o n c e p t i o n o f God and h i s a t t r i b u t e s . They a r e a s v e r i l y s e r v i n g a f a l s e god a s were t h e s e r v a n t s of B a a l . Are we w o r s h i p p i n g t h e t r u e God a s he i s r e v e a l e d i n h i s word, i n C h r i s t , i n n a t u r e , o r a r e we a d o r i n g some philosophical idol enshrined i n h i s place?" Volume 5 T e s t i m o n i e s , page 173-174. I n t h e quote o f 1973 t h e dove was no t h i r d p e r s o n God. The dove was formed by t h e l i g h t emanating from t h e F a t h e r . I n t h e s c r i p t u r e s t h i s dove o f l i g h t i s c a l l e d t h e Holy Ghost. T h i s Holy S p i r i t l i g h t i s c l e a r l y p i c t u r e d i n E a r l y W r i t i n g s , pages 54-56. I t p a s s e s from t h e F a t h e r t o t h e Son, and on t o God's p e o p l e . "The Holy S p i r i t p r o c e e d i n g from t h e o n l y b e g o t t e n Son, b i n d s t h e human a g e n t body, s o u l , and s p i r i t , t o t h e d i v i n e human n a t u r e o f C h r i s t . " S.M. V o l . page 251. T h i s s t a t e m e n t o f J a n u a r y 21, 1873 g i v e n by i n s p i r a t i o n a l s o d e s t r o y s t h e d o c t r i n e o f t h r e e c o - e v a l gods i n u n i t y , t a u g h t i n o u r C h u r c h Manual and i n Q u e s t i o n s on D o c t r i n e a s a fundamental b e l i e f . T h i s s t a t e m e n t r e v e a l s o n l y two B e i n g s o c c u p y i n g t h e t h r o n e , o r c i r c l e o f D e i t y . I showed E l d e r S h u l e r about two y e a r s b e f o r e h i s d e a t h t h i s q u o t e , and he s a i d t o me, " I have n e v e r s e e n t h i s . You had b e t t e r t a k e i t t o t h e b r e t h r e n i n Washington." E v e n though we l i v e a t a time of g r e a t l i g h t , the people p e r i s h f o r a l a c k o f knowledge. At t h i s p o i n t I want t o e x p r e s s a deep c o n v i c t i o n w h i c h I f e e l i s heaven-born. I b e l i e v e t h a t t o d a y v e r y few m i n i s t e r s who g r a d u a t e from o u r s e m i n a r y and e n t e r t h e p u l p i t have t h i s l i v i n g knowledge: T h a t a t r u e God i s one who i s omnipotent, O m n i s c i e n t , Omnipresent, immutable, w i t h o u t a b e g i n n i n g and w i t h o u t an e n d i n g : c a n n e v e r be a c t e d upon, m o d i f i e d o r c o n t r o l l e d by a n o t h e r e t e r n a l e n t i t y . He must a l w a y s p o s s e s s _ an u n c o n d i t i o n a l e x i s t e n c e from any o t h e r God. I f i t were p o s s i b l e f o r two s e l f - e x i s t i n g e t e r n a l e n t i t i e s t o e x i s t t h e y would l i m i t e a c h o t h e r . N e i t h e r one c o u l d be t h e p r o p r i e t a r y , t h e H i g h e s t , o r be a l l i n a l l supreme. N e i t h e r one c o u l d make any c l a i m s t o t h e forms o r m o t i o n s o f t h e o t h e r , b e c a u s e h e r e e x i s t s an e n t i t y , e x i s t i n g w i t h o u t a b e g i n n i n g , e x i s t i n g by H i m s e l f and o f H i m s e l f , j u s t a s much so a s God t h e F a t h e r . So i n t h e a r e a o f D e i t y t o t h i n k o f more t h e n one t r u e God, i s t o c o n f u s e t h e mind p r o d u c i n g a phantasm. "Jehovah page 166. i s t h e o n l y t r u e God." Here i s a c o m b i n a t i o n o f q u o t e s I s e n t t o l e a d e r s and t h a t ended up i n W a s h i n g t o n . "God i s t h e F a t h e r o f C h r i s t , C h r i s t i s t h e Son o f God. To C h r i s t h a s been g i v e n an e x a l t e d p o s i t i o n ; he h a s been made e q u a l w i t h God." "The F a t h e r t h e n made known t o t h e a n g e l s (and u s ) t h a t i t was o r d a i n e d by_ H i m s e l f t h a t C h r i s t h i s Son s h o u l d be e q u a l w i t h H i m s e l f s o t h a t w h e r e v e r was t h e p r e s e n c e o f t h e Son, i t was a s H i s own p r e s e n c e . T h e s e a n g e l s ( t h o s e i n sympathy w i t h L u c i f e r ) were unhappy because they c o u l d not look i n t o t h e F a t h e r ' s u n s e a r c h a b l e wisdom, and a s c e r t a i n h i s p u r p o s e s i n e x a l t i n g h i s Son J e s u s and endowing him w i t h s u c h u n l i m i t e d (omnipotent) power and command." ( c o - r u l e r s h i p ) S.P., page 19. "To d i s p u t e t h e supremacy o f t h e Son o f God, t h u s i m p e a c h i n g t h e wisdom and l o v e o f t h e C r e a t o r ( F a t h e r ) had become t h e p u r p o s e o f t h i s p r i n c e o f a n g e l s . " P.P., page 36. " I n a l l t h e u n i v e r s e t h e r e was b u t one who c o u l d i n b e h a l f o f man s a t i s f y i t s (law) c l a i m s . Only one e q u a l w i t h God c o u l d make atonement ( d i e ) f o r i t s t r a n s g r e s s i o n . " (Not a s a God w i t h o u t a b e g i n n i n g ; b u t a s a God o f r e l a t i v i t y made e q u a l ) P.P., page 6 3. Here a r e a group o f q u o t e s t h a t e x p r e s s d i v i n e t h o u g h t s which could never e n t e r i n t o a d o c t r i n e o f T r i t h e i s m o r Trinitarianism. The way t h e l e a d e r s i n Washington a n s w e r e d me, g i v e s t o me t h e g r e a t e s t e v i d e n c e . Gods p e o p l e have no more a u t h o r i t y from t h e B i b l e t o t e a c h T r i t h e i s m a s a t r u t h ; t h a n t h e C a t h o l i c s have t o t e a c h T r i n i t a r i a n i s m a s t h e t r u t h . P l e a s e d o n ' t t h i n k I am h a r s h , f o r I l o v e a l l p e o p l e . An e i g h t h grade s t u d e n t s u c c e s s f u l i n h i s language c o u r s e , even i f he were n o t from a C h r i s t i a n f a m i l y , c o u l d t a k e t h e s e s t a t e m e n t s above, r e a d them ( u s i n g a d i c t i o n a r y i f need be) and be a b l e t o g i v e t h e r i g h t meaning. (Because h i s mind i s n o t c l o s e d up " t o t h e i r l i g h t " by t h e h y p n o t i c power o f b i g o t r y and p h i l o s o p h i c a l i d o l a t r y . ) A l l o f t h e S p i r i t o f Prophecy quoted above, r e v e a l s o n l y two B e i n g s i n t h e c i r c l e o f D e i t y . One B e i n g i s t h e Supreme God who became a F a t h e r , by p r o d u c i n g a second B e i n g , who was God H i s Son o f r e l a t i v i t y . I u s e t h e word God a s i t i s u s e d i n t h e B i b l e o f a n y one ( p r o f e s s e d l y ) m i g h t y , w h e t h e r t r u l y so o r n o t , and i s a p p l i e d n o t o n l y t o t h e t r u e God, b u t t o f a l s e gods, m a g i s t r a t e s , j u d g e s , a n g e l s , p r o p h e t s , e t c .

The Son o f God was not a d e l e g a t e d God; b u t he was a God by r e l a t i o n s h i p . He was p a r t o r second s e l f o f H i s Father. He was t h e p r o d u c t o f t h e F a t h e r ' s own Person. He was not c r e a t e d from n o t h i n g , b u t came f o r t h from H i s own F a t h e r . (R. H. J u l y 9, 1895) T h a t f a c t o f b e i n g a Son was e v i d e n c e He was n o t a t r u e God. A t r u e God r e c e i v e s n o t h i n g o f H i m s e l f from a n o t h e r . A t r u e Son r e c e i v e s h i s sonship of h i s Father. A F a t h e r i s t h e s o u r c e and o r i g i n o f h i s t r u e Son. O n l y t h e s e two B e i n g s occupy t h e t h r o n e of D e i t y . "God ( t h e F a t h e r ) w i l l not a c c e p t t h e i n v e n t i o n s o f men who by t h e i r works t r y t o e n t e r t h e c i r c l e o f D e i t y , where o n l y t h e Holy One, t h e o n l y B e g o t t e n Son o f God has a r i g h t t o t r e a d . " R. H. A u g u s t 9, 1898. The o n l y b e i n g who was n e x t t o C h r i s t b e f o r e s i n e n t e r e d was L u c i f e r t h e c o v e r i n g c h e r u b i m . The one i n t h i r d p l a c e t o d a y i s t h e A n g e l G a b r i e l , who took L u c i f e r ' s p l a c e . P.P. page 35, D.A. page 99, 234. When L u c i f e r was i n t h i r d p l a c e i n t h e u n i v e r s e , h i s d e s i r e f o r e q u a l i t y o f power and r u l e r s h i p w i t h t h e F a t h e r stemmed from t h e e x a l t a t i o n o f t h e Son by h i s F a t h e r . Why, q u e s t i o n e d L u c i f e r , s h o u l d C h r i s t be e x a l t e d and n o t me? T h i s i s t h e r e a l b a s i s of t h e G r e a t C o n t r o v e r s y ; t h e law came i n a s an a f t e r c o n t e n t i o n . The f a c t o f t h e Son's e x a l t a t i o n by h i s F a t h e r t h r o u g h communicated Omnipotence and d e l e g a t e d c o - r u l e r s h i p p r o v e s t o me t h e r e i s o n l y One t r u e God, and One b e g o t t e n Son. The Son a t no t i m e o f H i s e x i s t e n c e has been i n d e p e n d e n t o f h i s Father. The Son h a s a l w a y s been s u r r e n d e r e d and o b e d i e n t t o h i s F a t h e r ' s w i l l , and t h e F a t h e r has empowered t h e Son to execute the mighty c o u n s e l s of His w i l l . The Son does a l l t h i n g s t o , and f o r , h i s F a t h e r , b e c a u s e o f h i s g r e a t l o v e f o r Him. The Son g i v e s us t h e example and a s k s u s t o do to and f o r , t h e F a t h e r i n our s p h e r e , a s he d o e s i n h i s s p h e r e .

One more a s p e c t o f t h e s e w o n d e r f u l q u o t a t i o n s . "In a l l t h e u n i v e r s e t h e r e was but one who c o u l d i n b e h a l f o f man s a t i s f y t h e c l a i m s o f t h e b r o k e n law o f God. None b u t C h r i s t c o u l d make atonement ( d i e ) f o r i t s t r a n s g r e s s i o n . " No t r u e God, a s t h e F a t h e r , c o u l d i n r e a l i t y d i e . But a Son o f r e l a t i v i t y , b e g o t t e n a s a God, t h e n e x a l t e d t o be e q u a l w i t h t h e t r u e God, c o u l d d i e . And t h a t k i n d o f d e a t h would f u l l y meet t h e l a w ' s demand and s u f f i c e t o sav t h e sinner.

The f a c t t h a t t h e d i v i n e Son c o u l d come t o an end by d y i n g , i s t h e e v i d e n c e he was n o t a t r u e God. Lucifer knew b e f o r e h i s f a l l , t h a t t h e Son was not t r u e God, and t h a t t h e Son o f God c o u l d be d e s t r o y e d . " I t was by s e e k i n g t o e x a l t h i m s e l f above t h e Son o f God t h a t S a t a n had s i n n e d i n h e a v e n . " D.A. page 129. " S a t a n made i t e v i d e n t t h a t t h e r e a l p u r p o s e o f h i s r e b e l l i o n was t o d e t h r o n e God ( t h e F a t h e r ) and d e s t r o y Him t h r o u g h whom t h e l o v e o f God was shown." D.A. page 57.

In t h e s e f o l l o w i n g quotes i s the l i v i n g t r u t h of the d e a t h o f a God t h a t made t h e means f o r a f u l l atonement, t o be c a r r i e d o u t f o r f a l l e n man, from t h e a s c e n s i o n o f C h r i s t t o t h e c l o s e o f human p r o b a t i o n . "The p r i c e f o r man's r e d e m p t i o n c o u l d be p a i d o n l y by one e q u a l (made) w i t h God, t h e s p o t l e s s Son o f t h e i n f i n i t e Father." R.H. O c t o b e r 26, 1896. " J u s t i c e demanded t h e s u f f e r i n g s o f a man. C h r i s t (a Son o f r e l a t i v i t y ) e q u a l w i t h God (was made i n t h e e x p r e s s image o f t h e F a t h e r ' s P e r s o n ) gave t h e s u f f e r i n g s o f a God." R.H. September 21, 1886. "The u n i v e r s e was amazed a t t h e s p e c t a c l e o f God ( t h e Son) becoming a s a c r i f i c e f o r t h e g u i l t y . He took upon h i s d i v i n e nature (Deity) the r e s u l t s of the t r a n s g r e s s i o n o f God's law." R.H. A p r i l 30, 1901. "One (made) e q u a l w i t h God, p a s s e d t h r o u g h d e a t h i n our b e h a l f , he came t o d i e , ( a s a God) t o l i e i n t h e tomb a s human b e i n g s must." R.H. March 9," 1905. "The s p i r i t o f J e s u s s l e p t (dead) i n t h e tomb w i t h h i s body and d i d n o t wing i t ' s way t o h e a v e n . A l l t h a t c o m p r i s e d t h e l i f e and i n t e l l i g e n c e ( s p i r i t ) o f J e s u s r e m a i n e d w i t h h i s body i n t h e s e p u l c h e r and when he came f o r t h i t was a s a whole b e i n g : he d i d n o t summon h i s s p i r i t from h e a v e n . " S.P., V o l . 3, pages 203, 204. "He who d i e d f o r t h e s i n ' s o f t h e w o r l d was t o r e m a i n i n t h e tomb t h e a l l o t t e d t i m e . He was i n t h a t s t o n e y house a p r i s o n e r of d i v i n e j u s t i c e . He was r e s p o n s i b l e t o t h e judge ( t h e F a t h e r ) o f t h e u n i v e r s e . He was b e a r i n g t h e s i n s o f t h e w o r l d , and h i s F a t h e r o n l y c o u l d r e l e a s e him." Ms. 94 1897. "The Roman g u a r d c o u l d n o t endure t h e l i g h t from h e a v e n and became a s dead men when t h e a n g e l s d e s c e n d e d t o r e s u r r e c t t h e body o f t h e Son o f God." R.H. A p r i l 12, 1870. "God ( t h e F a t h e r t h r o u g h A n g e l s ) had a c t u a l l y r a i s e d Him up from t h e tomb, b e f o r e H i s body saw c o r r u p t i o n . " S.P., V o l 3, page 270. These s t a t e m e n t s c o n c e r n i n g t h e g i f t o f God's Son and h i s d e a t h and r e s u r r e c t i o n c a n n e v e r be u s e d t o s u p p o r t a t r i u n e God, o r Gods. No t r u e God c o u l d d i e t o redeem a t r a n s g r e s s o r , even though h i s n a t u r e was w i l l i n g t o . But a t r u e Son o f a t r u e God, made e q u a l i n d i v i n e power and c o - r u l e r s h i p , ( i f t h e Son was w i l l i n g ) c o u l d d i e and b r i n g l i f e t o t h e lost. S i n c e t h e o n l y way t o s a v e was t h e d e a t h o f God's Son? i t i s e v i d e n t t h a t i f t h e Son would h a v e r e f u s e d t o d i e , t h e o n l y r e c o u r s e ( i t seems) was t o b l o t o u t and s t a r t o v e r .

My own e a r s have h e a r d from t h e p u l p i t t h e s e words: "That t h e word b e g o t t e n son i n John 3:16 means u n i q u e t h a t He was n o t a Son b e f o r e t h e i n c a r n a t i o n , t h a t he became a u n i q u e son b e c a u s e he was b o r n o f Mary w i t h o u t an e a r t h l y father." (To my o b s e r v a t i o n o f t h e s e words, t h e y c o n t a i n the seed of h e r e s y . They p r e s e n t a human s a c r i f i c e , and t h a t p a i n and t e m p t a t i o n and d e a t h was o n l y e x p e r i e n c e d by t h e human n a t u r e . ) "That i n d e a t h he r a i s e d H i m s e l f by H i s own D i v i n e N a t u r e . H i s F a t h e r nor t h e Holy S p i r i t who a r e t h e two o t h e r Gods o f a t r i n i t y had n o t h i n g t o do w i t h H i s i n c a r n a t i o n o r l i f e on e a r t h , o r H i s r e s u r r e c t i o n . I t was a l l done by t h e second God a l o n e . " What I have j u s t w r i t t e n i s u p h e l d t h e y s a y by t h e words o f Mrs. White t h a t f o l l o w s , but t h e y c l o t h e t h e s e words i n mysticism. I have found i t u s e l e s s t o p e n e t r a t e t h e m y s t i c a l v a i l o v e r t h e i r minds. So I quote t h e B i b l e t o u p h o l d Mrs. White on h e r s t a t e m e n t . " P a u l an a p o s t l e (not o f men n e i t h e r by man b u t by J e s u s C h r i s t and God t h e F a t h e r who r a i s e d Him from t h e d e a d . ) " G a l . 1:1. But i f t h e S p i r i t o f Him, ( t h e F a t h e r ) t h a t r a i s e d up J e s u s from t h e dead d w e l l i n you, he t h a t r a i s e d up C h r i s t from t h e dead s h a l l a l s o q u i c k e n your m o r t a l b o d i e s by H i s S p i r i t t h a t d w e l l e t h i n you." T h i s shows t h e d i v i n i t y i n J e s u s t h a t d i d n ' t d i e , and a l s o t h e power t h a t r a i s e d him t o l i f e . Here i s t h e s o u r c e o f t h e i d e a t h a t t h e d i v i n i t y d i d not d i e meaning t h a t t h e D i v i n e p r e - e x i s t e n t God t h e Son d i d n o t d i e . He ( P e t e r ) c o u l d n o t c o n c e i v e i t p o s s i b l e t h a t t h e Son o f God s h o u l d be p u t t o d e a t h . Satan suggested to h i s mind t h a t i f J e s u s was t h e Son of God he c o u l d n o t die." S.P. V o l . 3, page 231. The s c i e n t i f i c m y s t i c a l e s s e n c e o f t h r e e t r u e Gods i n u n i t y t o my mind (and I t h i n k I have t h e mind o f C h r i s t ) i s a f a l s e t h e o r y and i s t h e Omega o f a p o s t a s y . The A l p h a o f a p o s t a s y was t h e s u b s t i t u t i o n o f a f a l s e God i n t h e remnant f o u n d a t i o n ; w h i c h was o v e r t h r o w n by t h e S p i r i t o f P r o p h e c y V o l . 8 T e s t i m o n i e s , page 255 t o 335. But t h e Omega w i l l n o t be overcome, o n l y a t t h e coming o f Christ. T h i s omega of a p o s t a s y i s s e t f o r t h i n t h e R. H. J a n u a r y 7, 1904 c o n n e c t e d w i t h J u d e ' s message a s g r e a t f o r c e t o t h e remnant c h u r c h .
