Address of Head Office of Sindh Development Organization SHIKARPUR Name of Chairman: Mr. Muneer Ahmed Buriro Sindh Development Organization Office, Near Agha Khan Lab, Station road, Shikarpur. Contact No. +00923052385707 1. The Situation Analysis: The population of the district is scattered in many village sand little towns situated in remote and far-flung areas and most of the population depends upon agriculture and cattle farming. The agriculture and cattle farming is mostly dependant on the rainfall which is very scarce in this part and this factor very much affects the livelihood of the people of this area. The population of these areas mostly belongs to the very poor and disadvantaged class confronting with many socio economic issues relating to livelihood. According to UN World Food Report, 95% of the population lives in rural areas out of which 85% depend on livestock rearing and subsistence agriculture. However over last 18 years there have been 11 droughts which have badly affected peoples lives as it is tied up with livestock and subsistence agriculture. The droughts renders both the livestock and agriculture unproductive as fodder become unavailable and land become useless due to shortage of water. 85% of the poor households who depend on these rains dependent resources utterly suffer and their position become seriously deplorable. These people then resort to migration in search of food, fodder and work or take up other roles (like engage children in earning activities like carpets, hotels, shoe shining, and water carrier and so on). 90% of the people live below poverty line. These are those people who cannot afford the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, education and health service. They eat little and non nutritious food daily which force them to suffer from malnutrition problems particularly the growing children, lactating and pregnant mothers. As a result of the prevailing situation 75% of the people of Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Shahdadkot remain illiterate, under nourished, unhealthy, economically weak, and politically unaware and environmentally unconscious. There is lack of resources to be socio economically self reliant community. The irony of the situation is that the state alone cannot take entire responsibility to provide social services and livelihood means to the people. Keeping in view the adverse situation and gigantic task, the need has been felt that the intervention of the condors be sought through public private partnership to combat the situation. Recently the Organization field staff visited some villages of the Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Shahdadkot District and collected information about the living conditions of people. During

the random survey, village people mentioned many of their problems relating to living conditions, clean and safe drinking water, unhealthy environment of sanitation, health and education etc. keeping in view the present circumstances, The Organization and community people felt that there is dire need to design a special project for the people of this area to highlight and address the core issues of community. Following problems were identified and needed to be addressed on priority basis: 1. Unavailability of clean safe and sweet drinking water. 2. Ignorance of proper sanitation and health due to not having sufficient awareness of Sindh Development Organization at Community. 2. Problem Identification & Reason of its Selection 2.1 Unavailability of Clean Drinking Water: According to national Statistics 45% of rural people drink safe & Sweet water. However in lower Sindh the percentage is 15 to 25%. Due to the consecutive droughts ground water has become rapidly salty and not viable to drink. People are dependent on brackish drinking water from wells and contaminated water of rain water harvesting ponds. As 90% villages lack sanitation facilities, human faces also mix with water of rain water harvesting ponds, which the cattle and people drink. The villagers drink the milk of the cattle and that is how human faces find their way into the human food cycle. This is dangerous for health and diseases like typhoid, gastritis and diarrhea become a potential threat. The importance of drinking clean water and the bio sand water filter would be provided in each village. In each village a TOT on bio sand water filter construction would conducted so that the villagers can make and maintain the filters them selves. Bio sand water filter BSWF material would be provided on subsidized rates to the villagers. Sindh Development Organization has extensive experience on the BSWF and has around 1,000 families using it at the house hold level. The BSWF has the capacity to remove 98% of harmful bacteria from contaminated water. 2.2 Ignorance of Proper Sanitation and Health & Hygiene Practices: People in the rural areas use open space as latrines which also contribute to the spread of communicable diseases. Many deadly diseases like hepatitis are spreading rapidly and causing severe damage to health of the rural communities from which they are unaware. Provision of Latrines in the target areas will give them hygienic environment, mobilization and awareness trainings will also enhance their information about health and preventive measures. Before the latrines are provided the communities would be made aware of dangers of using open space as latrine. The Organization has extensive experience in Latrines and building Pit latrines. Latrines would be built after three months of the initial awareness activity. The awareness raising topics would be on clean lines and hygiene, and training would be provided how to maintain the latrines (both in community & schools). The Organization has got the ample experience of construction of different types of latrines. One is the double pit latrines, which is low cost and easy to promote and convince village community to build at their land or homes; they can also replicate it one they know about the importance of hygiene. Training through social mobilizers and master trainers will be provided to the community about the importance and awareness of this very important issue of sanitation and they will also be trained that how to make and maintain the latrine.

3. Involvement of other Stakeholders: The communities have some elders, notables, elected representatives and government officials who have their say and are willing to contribute in this project; will be motivated to ensure their participation in all activities. These communities are gifted with many talents; some are masons and willing to work voluntarily during construction of water tanks and in installation of hand pumps and latrines. Women will contribute in project by participating in Gender and Primary Health Trainings; they will also form their village Women Committee which provides them chance to flourish on their own. The government Organizations will cooperate with community and the Organization and they will ensure and provide their technical and governmental support in this project. The Organization has held meetings with the government Health and Education Departments and shared this project with them and they assured that they will fully support it. As The Organization has good relations with the District Government Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Shahdadkot and Government Health & Education Departments, hence it will advocate that the targeted villages will be provided support and cooperation in achieving the objectives of the project amicably for the legitimate benefit of deprived people and masses. These practices will highly support the project activities for healthy environment in project area. 4. Project Objectives and Activities:
1. To support poor household in getting accessibility of clean and safe sweet drinking

water and sanitation facilities (Latrines) for improving their health through implementation of community physical infrastructure in 02 district Jacobabad, Shikarpur, in one year. 2. Sanitation (latrines) to improve Health & Living Standards in One Year. Following activities will be conducted to achieve Objective 01. Construction of Household Latrines (Annex B): People in the rural areas use open space as latrines which also contribute to the spread of communicable diseases. Many diseases are spreading rapidly and causing severe damage to health of the rural communities from which they are unaware. Provision of Latrines in the target areas will give them hygienic environment and mobilization and awareness for its use will enhance health and preventive measures. Before the latrines are provided the communities would be made aware of dangers of using open defecation. The Organization has extensive experience in building Latrines. latrines could be built after three months of initial awareness activity (Latrines) Awareness Sessions in each Village). The awareness sessions raising topics would be on cleanliness and hygiene, and training would be provided how to maintain the latrines. Under this project, poor households will be helped to build one Pit Latrine each to adopt proper practices of Hygiene. Following activities will be conducted to achieve Objective 02.

This model not only addresses the immediate needs of the community for maintaining hygienic environment but also ensures log term socioeconomic sustainability with holistic approach. The formation of community into Sindh Development Organization not only brings the community socially together but ensures economic sustainability through opportunities of small business. By focusing on water and sanitation the health of men, women and children can be ensured as improved and it will save them from spending their money on the treatment of diseases. If we want community to come out of its current situation then all aspects of health & hygiene need to be taken into consideration. This project also makes sure that community will participate fully in all the activities by contributing in kind, financially and manual labour. By taking active part the community becomes responsible and takes complete ownership of the assets.

The project will be launched in the 02 Districts Shikarpur, Jacobabad at the start of the project a detailed household baseline survey (knowledge, Attitude and Practices Survey) will be conducted to ascertain the living conditions of the families and only those villages where people are living below the poverty line and lacking the required facilities as per project proposal will be selected. This baseline survey would be used on completion of the project cycle to evaluate the impact of the project activities in the villages and also to over see that what changes ahs been brought in the living standards of the targeted communities and people. The project will address the problems by mobilizing community and giving them appropriate familiarity of specific measures of hygiene that can make a difference in their life. In the end of project people will be having positive change in their routine life. The community is eager to bring change in their customized lives and willing to learn and participate in activities during project execution. Therefore the proposed project has been designed by considering the feedback of community and recommendations made by Sindh Development Organization field staff. Since Sindh Development Organization is already working in the targeted area and has got the basic and relevant information about the communities and households, hence meetings will be held with the communities to discuss their present situation, identifying the needs and problems with suggestions of appropriate measures and solution. 6.3 Criteria to select villages: Villages with improper facilities of disposal of human waster / residue.
