PICTURESQUE GRADE II
an outstanding and important Grade II listed manor house
The Manor, Chichester - 1,750,000
The Manor is an outstanding Grade II Listed
house constructed in the reign of James II at
the end of the Restoration period with
delightful wisteria-clad elevations in mellow
brickwork under a tiled roof.
The property has been the subject of
sympathetic refurbishment over recent years
so that it now enjoys the comfort of modern
living. This, allied with the style and character
of its history, The Manor is a wonderful family
home. A number of exceptional attractions
within the house include some fine oak
panelling in several rooms, open fireplaces,
broad, planked oak flooring and a broad
staircase with an unusual octagonal newel
post.
The kitchen has been attractively refitted and
bathrooms convey modern comfort.
Throughout the house the sash windows allow
light to flood through accentuating the
wonderful and historic charm within.
Outside, the house stands surrounded by its
beautifully landscaped gardens and is
approached via a long tarmac driveway.
Immense care has been taken in the design and
planting of the formal gardens that frame the
house so that borders of lavender and box
fringe the eastern elevation, a grassy walk
flanked by delightful herbaceous borders
highlights the north and mature trees add
stature and focal points around the sweeping
lawn.
A stone-flagged sun terrace and oak pergola
abut the house and an excellent vegetable
garden and orchard have been created.
Irrigation, as well as light systems, has been
installed within the garden. A hard tennis court
and generous garaging completes the picture.

CLERICAL CONNECTIONS
all the benefits of the countryside
Dunmore, Four Elms - 4,950,000
Dunmore is a wonderful home located on
the boundary of Sussex and Kent. Surrounded
by mature gardens and paddocks this country
house enjoys all the benefits of the countryside
while being less than 30 miles from Central
London.
A plaque next to the front door of the main
house commemorates Dunmores genesis
on the current site. Built in 1938, the house
was intended to be used as a holiday home
for the clergy. It was used as such until after
the Second World War when the property was
sold in 1946 and became the principal house
of the old Dunmore Estate.
The Estate was broken up in 2004 and since
that time the current owners have carried
out extensive internal and external works.
In addition to the main house there is
a range of leisure facilities such as an all
weather tennis court, indoor swimming pool
with spa and stable yard with floodlit mange.
A stone step from the gravelled drive leads
up to a pillared portico from which an elegant
oversized door opens into a welcoming
Reception Hall. The hall has patterned
parquet flooring, which is a feature
continued throughout all the main reception
rooms, and double height ceiling with
a stunning oculus filling the room with
natural light. From this room all the main
reception rooms are accessed.
The triple aspect Dining Room has a large
bay window overlooking the lawn, and a
double door provides access to the rear terrace.
There is a fireplace with stone mantel and the
ceiling is adorned with rose mouldings. Across
the hall is the Drawing Room which, like the
dining room, has a bay window overlooking
the lawn. There are two fireplaces both with
marble mantels and surrounds. Double doors
lead to the rear hallway from which there
is access to the West terrace.
The Kitchen/Breakfast Room is a superb space
with a double height bay window over a built-
in seating area. It has Smallbone bespoke
cabinets with granite work surfaces.
Appliances include a Wolf gas hob, Wolf oven
with grill, Sub Zero fridge and various Miele
appliances. Integrated into the Kitchen is an
informal seating area with fireplace, this leads
through to the Orangery which has a polished
marble floor and two sets of double doors
giving access to the rose garden and West
lawn.
Beyond the kitchen are the Utility Room and
Boot Room with access to the rear drive and
garage. A built-in Linn audio system is fitted
to all of the principal rooms throughout the
house and to the indoor swimming pool area.
The gardens are a particular feature of the
house and are very well tended and stocked,
served by an automated watering system.
They consist of two large lawns and a smaller
lawn, herbaceous and shrub borders, rose
beds, paths and mature azaleas.
There is a charming pond in a wooded area
with rhododendrons and orchard with apple
and plum trees. A summer house to the South
East of the house overlooks the floodlit, all
weather tennis court which has climbing roses
trained up the fencing, while the Scandinavian
style hut overlooks the orchard. Beyond the
main area of lawn is the vegetable patch which
includes a green house and gardeners shed
with WC.
The grounds also feature other outbuildings
like an indoor swimming pool, seperate
cottage, stables and garages.

delightful Grade II house
Brook House, Chiddingly - 635,000
This delightful Grade II house is believed
to date from the 17th Century with later
additions. The house is a timber framed
building, with whitewashed walls and
elevations of exposed timber with plaster
infilling to the rear, all under a clay tile roof.
Internally, the house has many period features
and a charming atmosphere. Brook House
has been further improved and extended
by the present owner and has well presented
accommodation, arranged over three floors.
Brook House has the added advantage of
planning permission, which is still current,
to convert the double garage and games
room into a separate annexe.
Features of note include a magnificent vaulted
ceiling in the sitting room and inglenook
fireplaces in the drawing room and dining
room, one with a wood burning stove. The
kitchen/breakfast room has a brick floor,
a good range of cream fronted units, with
hardwood work surfaces, and a casement door
giving access to the garden. Other features of
note include many exposed ceiling and wall
timbers, oak latch doors, and a pretty south
facing bay window in the dining room with
a window seat.
The house is approached from the lane
via a brick paved driveway, which leads to
a parking area adjacent to the garages. From
the parking area a gate, set in a honeysuckle
covered pergola, gives access to the garden
and from which a brick path, bordered by
flower beds, leads to the front door.
Brook House is surrounded by a very
attractive mature and sheltered garden with
a high degree of privacy. The garden is mainly
laid to lawn with some well stocked beds and
interspersed with an interesting variety of trees
and shrubs, including a tulip tree, and a mature
fig. To the rear of the house is a paved sitting
area with an open sided wooden summer
house. A short distance to the south side
of the house is a brick built wine store.

THE FACE OF ANTIQUES
Aspect meets TV Presenter Clive Attrell
24 ASPECT COUNTY |
ANTIQUES, ART, AUCTIONS
Clive Attrell is a well known face on TV
antiques programmes on both BBC and ITV.
Many of you may not know that he owns
Hastings Antiques Centre in Hastings Old
Town. A renowned expert with 30 years
experience in the business, Clive takes his own
antiques roadshow around the counties, where
you can meet him and get a valuation. Aspect
interviewed Clive at The Ship, Winchelsea
Beach in January.
Can you tell us what the spark was that
started the interest in antiques in the first
place?
When I was about the age of 5 I loved
dinosaurs and I wanted to be an archaeologist.
But then I went to school and did my A
Levels, and realised that no one really wants
to dig up dinosaurs anymore.
Where did you get started in the business?
When I was in school I started to clean up old
pennies that didnt cost anything, buy them
cheap and sell them for about 4 or 5 in
school.
Obviously youre a well known face on TV,
how did you get into being involved with
TV?
Someone found me at an antique fair in
Kempton one day, they did a little camera
shot, then they phoned me after for an audition
down in Bristol and we started a Pilot series
about 5 or 6 years ago.
Now that you are a well known face, do you
find that it affects your life in any way?
Not especially, sometimes in Tescos someone
might stop me and say oh I know your face
from somewhere, I dont mind really, I dont
get paid enough for too much aggravation!
Do you have a period in history that you
prefer to look at?
I enjoy all sorts of areas in History, in
particular the Napoleonic stuff, then coming
into the 20th century, theres WW1, WW2
which I used to research when I was younger,
but I would have to say that the Napoleonic
War is my favourite, mainly because of things
like the dress which had a lot of vivid colours.
What about a particular area that you
enjoy most, for example paintings, medals?
I like collecting my medals, but I like most
things, for example that nice piece of China I
showed you the other day, the reason I like it
is because the time it was made it was a new
design, it just fascinates me.
Have you got a particular medal, piece of
art, or ceramic that you would never sell?
AC161 - Clive Attrell Edit_Aspect County 26/01/2012 12:44 Page 10
ANTIQUES, ART, AUCTIONS
| WWW.ASPECT-COUNTY.CO.UK 25
Ive got a few that Ive kept myself, mainly I
like my gallantry medals, just because theyve
done something that deserved a medal, you
know, something that theyve earned through
bravery.
Is there a person who you would be if you
could go back in time?
Thats interesting, I did used to think George
4th, but then thought there was too much
gambling involved... but Id like to be anyone
with a family really, you know, big house,
going round and exploring, conquering other
lands and then collecting other antiques along
the way...
Napoleon perhaps?
Erm... maybe, I think well stick with George
4th!
It was great to come along to see your
roadshow the other day, really enjoyed it,
great atmosphere and an excellent air of
expectancy from the public to see you. Have
your roadshows gone down well?
Well its mainly East Sussex and Kent that I do
normally, I used to do the odd one or two in
say, Cumbria, but I now try to just focus on
doing them within the local area. We get good
people coming down, a lot of people returning
time after time with different antiques for me
to buy, because theyve seen me once or twice
before, gone away to do a bit of research,
found out that I give them a good, honest price
and then they keep coming back to see me.
With doing all these shows for such a long
time, there must be one piece of art that has
really caught your eye?
I did once buy this Chinese wine carrier which
was from the early 19th century. I thought it
might be around 5,000 - 10,000, I asked
them how much they wanted for it and they
said 10,000. So I bought it, and then had a lot
of trouble selling it, I took it to London, they
didnt like it at all, they said that it wasnt
work 5,000! I was a bit sad at the time... and
then I found someone else who said theyd
have it for 8,500, so you know, some you
win, some you lose, but if I see something that
I like, I just have to buy it.
Id image that sometimes in your business
that your heart can go overpower your
wallet?
It definitely can.
We spoke to some of the people who came
out of the roadshow the other day, at The
Ship at Winchelsea, and they were delighted
with the help in which they received from
you, and they seem to enjoy collecting also.
It seemed they were trusting in seeing you
on TV. What advice would you give anyone
who is thinking they have something which
they can sell?
Id say if you dont like what someone is
saying to you, take a sacond or third opinion.
I took something to someone once and they
told me it wasnt worth 500, but I knew it
was, its all about who you take it to and what
it means to them, always get that other opinion
from elsewhere. I did that and I got 10 times
the price that I got in the previous place.
Finally, what single piece of advice would
you give to people who are just starting to
collect in the antiques field?
I suppose its quite common to buy what you
like really, and if you dont like what you buy,
sell it as quick as possible! Always buy quality
if you can and always do your research.
Final words?
Always buy quality, quality, quality.
You can see Clive on TV and you can meet the
man himself - check out his website or the
pages of Aspect for dates of his roadshows
around Kent and Sussex.

MORE OR LESS BROWN FOR YOUR BUCK?
The Brown furniture market could be making a come back!
For years now we have all been reading lack-
lustre reports and comments from Auction
Houses and Antique Dealers on the steady
decline of prices being obtained for 18th and
19th Century furniture. These reports showed
us all that the fashion had changed and would
be unlikely to return in the next generation.
Well, I'm pleased to report that we may be
witnessing a revival of the furniture market
and with more of us trying to stretch our
budgets for home improvements, we could
turn the tables! I am not, for a moment,
suggesting that large, "lumps" of chocolate
brown mahogany furniture, much favoured
by the Victorians, are sitting centre stage in
our fashionable fairs in town, or, selling like
hot cakes out of our local antique shops. No,
what has been seen throughout the South East
is a gentle increase of private buyers attending
sales and a renewed interest from younger
generations wanting to mix the old in with
the new. Whilst the top end of the market has
remained buoyant, the late mahogany period
(c.1780 onwards) and the modest Regency
pieces have become very attainable, with
prices being similar to that of 1995.
Conversely however, if you enjoy your
academic or collectors furniture, the walnut
period of the early 18th Century and early
oak examples of the 17th Century have
remained in high demand due to the lack
of good examples coming onto the market.
So where to start? It all depends on your living
space, style and budget of course. Salerooms
have never been so accessible, with many
offering on-line bidding facilities and delivery
services, and with clean and presentable
galleries the experience is far from the
salerooms of old. When you find an item
you like ask your saleroom if they will issue
condition reports on the lot.
This report should detail any faults or
alterations that may have taken place, and give
you a clear idea of what you are buying. Next,
is to shop around and get to know your local
dealers, they are often the most interesting
people in your village and will let you know
if that special something comes their way.
Remember, its a buyers market, but for
how long?

DAVID HOCKNEY - A BIGGER PICTURE
Iconic artist now exhibiting in London
If you only visit one exhibition in 2012, make
it this one. David Hockney has been called
Britains greatest living artist with this show
the word critics are using is genius.
You enter his landscape world of super-vibrant
colour via a huge painting of Woldgate Woods
depicted in all their autumnal glory of russets
and golds (see illustration). Colour is
something we expect of this artist, after all he
brought us all the brilliance of California - but
here we are seeing England, specifically
Yorkshire, through his eyes, not as drab and
grey but lush with emerald green foliage,
fuchsia shadows, sugar pink puddles and
fields of vivid orange and yellow crops.
The result is life enhancing.
The show contains over 150 works a
fantastic output when one considers that
although some earlier landscape material is
featured, the majority is new, dating from
2004. Most depicts specific areas of wood and
farmland shown through the different seasons
and often from the same viewpoint. Straight
lanes, curved paths and tunnels through trees
are recurring motifs something reminiscent
of earlier works such as Mulholland Drive.
Trees, lovingly depicted - Hockney thinks of
them as friends - are central to many work.
The transition from winter on one small road
is recorded in a series of no less than 51
prints, culminating in one massive 32 canvas
painting The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate,
specifically made for the space at Burlington
House. Interestingly the prints originate from
drawings made on an iPad, a device in which
Hockney delights for the rapidity with which
he can capture the changes of scene. Even
more innovative is his film montage of the
Yorkshire Wolds in which he effectively
draws with the nine cameras which he straps
to his jeep.
It is a joy to see the works of a master who,
although at the pinnacle of his art, is still
experimenting with the exuberance of youth.
David Hockney the Bigger Picture is at the
Royal Academy of Arts at:
Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J
OBD from 21stJanuary- 9th April 2012.
10am-6pm daily. Late night Friday until

CROATIA
The Meds new holiday spot
As we move into February and the days start
getting longer, our thoughts turn to holidays.
It can be difficult in these straightened times to
think of somewhere that is not only different
and exciting, but will not break the bank.
This month I am focusing on Croatia, now
one of the Meds most sought after holiday
destinations. Its closer than most people
think with flights from all four London
Airports, and its just a two hour flight from
Gatwick to Pula.
Being outside of the Eurozone, your money
goes further and then there is that coast and
those islands that everyone raves about.
You will find crystal clear waters, white
pebble beaches framed by pine trees, the
occasional sandy beach or two, lovely
medieval towns, wonderful seafood, great
water sports and not a theme park in sight.
These are just some of the reasons why people
are choosing Croatia.
Zagreb is the capital and its a compact city
with around a million people, some stunning
architecture, beautiful parks and a wonderful
cultural scene. It makes a great two centre
break when you combine the capital with
a few days on the lovely Opatija Riviera just a
two hour drive away down the new motorway
(and theres little traffic outside of August).
Opatija itself is where tourism began in
Croatia when, in 1873, the Austrians built
a Railway line from Vienna so that the
aristocracy could get some rest and
recuperation on the Adriatic. Today, Opatija,
Lovran, Moscenicka Draga and the glorious
island of Rab in the Kvarner region are all
favourites with European visitors although
Brits have yet to discover them. Some of the
best beaches, including the sandy ones on Rab,
and some of the best seafood restaurants are
here (dont miss Le Mandrac, Plavi Podrum
and Bevanda).
Around an hours drive west, beyond the
Ucka Nature Park, is the heart-shaped, green
peninsula of Istria with the famous (and utterly
lovely) towns of Porec and Rovinj. This is the
region that is winning international awards for
its fabulous wine and olive oil. This is also
a gourmets paradise with Valsabbion,
Batelina and Zigante up there with the best.
Golf is new to Croatia but a brand new,
18 Hole championship course opened in
Savudrija in 2009 along with Croatias first
5 star Kempinski hotel- the Kempinski
Adriatic. This has a state- of- the- art spa
covering 3,000 square metres and provides
a wonderful golf and spa combination with
some superb deals.
If you love having your own villa with a pool,
theyre here in Istria. Not vast complexes as in
other parts of the Med but exquisite old stone
buildings, individually designed houses or
even a beautifully converted lighthouse.
Moving south, the region of Dalmatia is home
to the famous city of Split and the wonderful
resorts of Makarska, Tucepi, Baska Voda and
Brela just 90 minutes down the coast which
have some fabulous, sweeping pebble beaches
backed by the majestic Biokovo mountain
range. From here, a fish picnic excursion can
take you out to the islands of Brac and Hvar.
These islands offer a wide choice of hotels,
villas and apartments and the Bluesun Bonaca
close to the famous Zlatni Rat beach on Brac
is one of a wave of new all-inclusive hotels
providing superb value for money for families.
Almost in the very south of the country is
unique Dubrovnik with its ramparts, museums,
palaces and churches in the world famous old
city. Just a short boat or road journey away
are the beautiful islands of Sipan, Lopud and
Korcula, all favourites with British visitors
and with a wide choice of hotels from small,
boutique style to top of the range five star
places.
Casual cruises are a great way to explore the
coastline and islands travelling by gulet type
boats that can stop in tiny bays and coves.
These 7 night holidays are for relaxed souls
who enjoy hanging out in tee shirts and shorts,
with lots of stops for swimming and
snorkelling.
Roads in Croatia are excellent and there are
some excellent self-drive itineraries for the
independently minded. Having collected a
hire car at the arrival airport, days are spent
exploring sites, villages, and attractions with
the assurance of having pre-booked hotels
each night.
Celebs have discovered Croatia and a few
Brits have started to buy homes there. This
was yesterdays secret: make it tomorrows
holiday.

GOLF SOCIETY CHAMPIONSHIP
At last, something exciting for golf societies
Golf societies are essential to most golf clubs
survival, but very little is done to encourage
them to intergrate into golf clubs or progress
to a higher level. Now, there is a competition
which has been specifically designed to
stimulate and encourage what is essentially the
grass roots of golf golf societies. The Golf
Society Championship is a new competition
that will give societies the opportunity to
compete against each other and experience
the buzz of a large competition.
The PGA Pro atTenterden Golf Academy,
Richard Silman thinks ...golf societies often
play in their own a rarified atmosphere...
members become accustomed to their own
societys level of play, by competing in the
Golf Society Championship players can
experience a different level of play and
competition. JohnMoir of the Yellow Perils
Golf Society says I have played for years
with different golf societies but have never had
the opportunity to play against another society.
It will be interesting and Im looking forward
to the challenge.
The Championship will be organised by, and
held at, Tenterden Golf Club, an ideal venue
for such an event. The club is experienced at
hosting such golfing events and their course
is always in excellent condition.
The clubs policy of continuous
improvement has paid huge dividends over
the last few years... said Adrian Painter,
Tenterdens Greens and Course Manager.
He expects to lengthen the course by 54
yards, as well as enlarging some tees and
landscaping two ponds in time for the
competition. Richard Silman believes
...work recently carried out on the course has
made a big difference, fairways are now more
defined, some bunkers have been repositioned,
not for show, as on some courses, but to pose
a more realistic threat ,specially for long
hitters.
The modern course is played with brain, not
brawn...so whatever your handicap the course
will remain a challenge.Societies that
progress to the finals will have the unique
experience of playing off the white tees.
Players will find the course more testing than
in earlier rounds, because of the additional
yardage and will have to think carefully of
how to approach each hole.
Apart from the Society Championship Cup
there will be prizes for Best Individual Score,
Longest Drive, Nearest the Hole and Putting,
the proceeds of which go to the Kent, Sussex
& Surrey Air Ambulance Service.
Tenterden plan to roll out the competition into
other counties by combining with other
members clubs, until it becomes a must event
in every golf societys calender. If other clubs
or sponsors are interested in being involved
they should contact Teresa Cuff at TGC.
THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE GOLF
SOCIETY CHAMPIONSHIP

one team.
No golfer may play for more than one golf
society or team.

societies, the first drawn will be considered the
home team.

count.

must be arranged by the home team.
There is a charge of 30 per player per
round, which includes a 2 course meal.

the best 7 scores count, there is a charge of

HARROGATE HAVEN

For a taste of old world charm, quirky
independent shops and exclusive boutiques,
explore the intricate network of cobbled
streets, Victorian arcades and hidden mews
of cosmopolitan Harrogate, an opulent
Yorkshire gem, founded in the 17th century.
It has a fascinating heritage and sumptuous
tea rooms like Bettys (www.bettys.co.uk),
who are widely celebrated for their cream teas
- a favourite of the Queen when she visits the
area. Its a blast from the past outfit, where
quality of service and product are assured.
Harrogate is a gorgeous little place bursting
with culture and a tangible sense of history.
In the 19th and 20th centuries Harrogate
was popular among the British elite and was
frequented by European nobility. Its been
nominated as one of the best places to live
in England and has won countless floral
awards. It is also rumoured to call Daniel
Craig as one of its own. In fact, a walk around
Harrogate is akin to spot-the-celebrity but as
residents are accustomed to celebs, they are
generally left alone to enjoy their visit.
After wandering around the many antique
shops, art galleries, bijou gift shops and
family run boutiques found on the Montpellier
Quarter, take a window seat at Cat Walk Cafe
and order a coffee together with a great tasting
Yorkshire Curd Tart, a light pastry containing
curd cheese, fruit and nutmeg.
For a unique cream tea experience, Yorkshires
new vogue in afternoon tea is to be found
at Sugar Therapy - the choice location for
sophisticated ladies seeking a sensational
patisserie fix in the form of heavenly desserts,
Victoria club sandwiches, champagne trifle,
lemon meringue and a to-die-for Belgian
chocolate mousse, all served with Veuve
Cliquot (a semi-sweet champagne), aromatic
coffee or specialty tea. Eat in our take out,
prices start at 12. (www.sugartherapy.co.uk)
A trip to picturesque Knaresbourgh, an ancient
market town four miles east of Harrogate, is
a must - even if all you manage is a leisurely
stroll along the Waterways. There is nowhere
better for Sunday brunch and reading the
papers than Marigold Cafe, watching the boats
paddle up and down the River Nidd.
Back in Harrogate, unwind and have a little
me time at the Art Deco Harrogate Turkish
Baths and Health Spa - its a must-do self
indulgent experience.
For dinner, follow the locals who appear
to gravitate to the multi-award winning Van
Zellers, a divine little fine-dining restaurant
in the Montpellier Quarter showcasing some
serious talent in the kitchen which focuses
on local seasonal products - and rock star
customer service.
(www.vanzellerrestaurant.co.uk reservations
essential). Alternatively, theres the Royal
Baths Chinese Restaurant, with its vaulted
ceilings and magnificent cream and gold
art deco interiors
(www.royalbathschineserestaurant.com).
Nearby theres The Valley Gardens - 17
acres of manicured rarities, rhododendron
and seasonal flower displays, topped off
with a tennis court, a childrens play area
and a boating pool.
Give costly hotels a miss and go the serviced
apartment route instead. The three period
buildings belonging to The Lawrance - Kings
House, Duchy House and York Road, are all
on quiet residential streets within five minutes
of the city centre. Access is secure and once
inside, it becomes apparent that little has been
spared in achieving a contemporary and stylish
finish. All the whistles and bells are installed -
a flat screen television, WiFi, Playstation, MP3
docking station, mood lighting, rain showers
and extra comfy king-size beds The two-bed
apartment I occupied at York Road is spread
over three floors; the third floor landing and
main bedroom offers grand views of the
downstairs lounge and kitchen area.
The concierge service is excellent and
delivers a fabulous breakfast each morning,
complete with croissants, yoghurts, muffins
and pains au chocolat. The per person prices
start at 85. (www.thelawrance.co.uk).
Getting there: Head to London St Pancras
on the South Eastern high-speed service
from Ashford; then, from London Kings
Cross to York, which is a two and a half
hour journey, travel via East Coast Rail (I do
believe there is a high speed link). From York
to Harrogate its a quick hop on Northern Rail.
The journey cost 110. www.thetrainline.com.
For opulence and history, with an overload
of heritage, Harrogate is the perfect place
for a short break. The journey there will take
you through miles of picture postcard
landscapes and ancient villages and if you
look carefully youll find a cozy country pub
that youll want to get to know. For all there
is to see and do in Yorkshire, visit
www.yorkshire.com.

Barbados is the most easterly island in
the Caribbean island chain, all on it's own
with the Atlantic Ocean to one side and
the Caribbean Sea to the other. It is a
relatively flat country with only the one
major incline of Mount Hillaby, which
measures 1,089 feet above sea level.
The weather in Barbados rarely drops
below 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter
months December to March, and rarely
goes above 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the
summer months May to October. The
hurricane season runs from June until
December when humidity can be quite
unpleasant but the rest of the year enjoys
cooling trade northeast trade winds.
There are beaches everywhere. Along the
East coast they are wide and wind-blown.
Here the shore is pounded by the Atlantic
making it a delight for the surfers who
come from all over the world. Water
sports such as Kite boarding, wind surfing
and surfing are popular. The waves on the
south coast are perfect for such activities.
On the calmer South and West coasts, you
may walk for miles along unbroken white
sand beaches, sometimes stopping at a
cluster of coral rocks jutting out to sea.
All along the shore large and small
beaches are broken by coral formations,
the soft coral rocks weathered by the
ocean surf, forming abstract sculptures
pleasing to an artist's eye.
In the North, coral and sandstone cliffs
rise straight out of the sea reaching up
to a hundred feet in height. But even here,
youll find the occasional sheltered cove.
Barbados beaches are truly some of the
most beautiful in the Caribbean, in fact
the beach at The Crane was rated "one
of the ten best beaches in the world"
by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.
There are many tourist attractions on the
island including a thriving art community
with a lot of local work for sale at various
galleries across the country.
You can tour the island on organised
tours or grab a map and hire a car. There
are some delightful tropical gardens to
explore and of course endless white sandy
beaches to laze on.
With so much to fill your days, you
may not have much energy left for the
evenings, but Barbados nightlife is not
to be missed.
There are some of the best restaurants
in the world located in Barbados so make
sure you try at least one of the famous
ones while venturing out.
The best part about Barbados is that
there is something for everyone and your
holiday can be as busy or relaxing as you
please.

A SPECIAL PLACE
To tie the knot. Weddings at Crockstead Farm
Crockstead is an intimate and friendly
country hotel nestling in over 200 acres of
private parkland. The hotel is in the heart of
some delightful Sussex countryside within
easy reach of Lewes, Eastbourne and Royal
Tunbridge Wells.
This be an ideal and for your special wedding
day. For those spending their first happy days
of marriage there is plenty to do on those first
romantic days of wedlock. There is the world
famous Glyndebourne opera house, historic
Battle Abbey, bracing walks on the South
Downs or a visit to the coast to keep the happy
couple occupied.
Crockstead Estate dates as far as the 13th
century, however most of the buildings of
today date from between the 16th and the 19th
century. The farm has had a range of tenants
and was a working arable farm until 1991.
The restaurant and bar were created from the
original 19th century barn using original
timbers wherever possible.
For weddings there are both set packages and
individual packages designed to your
specifications, making your special day one to
remember.
Your day starts with a drinks reception on the
lawn or in the sunny hotel courtyard. This is
followed by your wedding breakfast served
either in Crocksteads cosy and intimate
restaurant (seating up to 40 guests) or in the
Mill Room (seating up to 100 guests).
Crockstead is now fully licensed for civil
ceremonies and civil partnerships in both the
Mill Room, the Sussex suite or the stunning
wrought iron gazebo on the lawn. There are
two venues available for your evening
reception: the first floor bar overlooking the
pond with an outside decked terrace, as well
as the Mill Room with access to the beautiful
hotel courtyard. The first floor bar is an
intimate venue available for parties of up to
40, whereas the Mill room has the capacity for
over 100 including dancing. Both are licensed
for recorded music, although the Mill Room
also has the capacity for live entertainment
Both venues have fully licensed bars and you
can have buffets for your evening guests and
music and drinking may continue until
midnight.
You can call to discuss your personal
requirements and for details of packages on

RYE - WEDDING JEWEL OF EAST SUSSEX
by Jon Firth Photographer
While there are many fine places to get
married in East Sussex, Rye and the
surrounding areas are hard to beat. After many
years of photographing Weddings all over the
county I can't think of any other area with
such a condensed rich concentration of truly
excellent hotels and venues, so fantastically
pretty for a photographer too - Rye must also
be commended for it's community spirit, and
treatment of visitors to the town, be that for
Weddings or other tourism, or indeed for
it's generally outstanding polite and helpful
attitude to photographers, both professional
and amateur!
Civil Ceremonies in Rye are generally handled
very well by the friendly team from Hastings
registration services. The vibe is now
generally towards customer service thankfully
once again, and I know if they had a choice
they would choose to actually meet couples
in advance where possible, as in the days
before public spending cuts.
The world is a different place though now, so
it falls to the venues to have the most intimate
knowledge of each Wedding Couple and build
a great relationship. The odd Church or two
could move along a little, helping the local
economy with a bit more flexibility, some are
progressive thank goodness.
Just above Rye lies attractive Flackley Ash
hotel, a Country House with 45 bedrooms
set in 5 acres of gardens and woodlands.
The hotel has saunas, a gym, steam room,
fantastic conservatory, the list goes on, but
like all good hotels its the people who you
find in them that makes them special. GM
Penny Brown's attention to detail for your
Wedding is really quite astounding. If I arrive
early for a Wedding I wouldnt be the least
bit surprised to see Penny using a ruler to
measure the tables out, but it's this exacting
work pre wedding that leads to the relaxed
Wedding experience customers here really
appreciate! Penny gets to know every couple
that marry at this hotel, and with all the luxury
beauty treatments on hand for the ladies, it's
no wonder this is a popular venue.
As we move down to Rye itself, easily one
of the most picturesque towns in the whole
country, you will come across the Famous
Mermaid Inn, located on Mermaid Street.
This Inn has played host to the rich and
famous, Royalty, and Wedding customers
distant, and local. Fine dining is the norm
here with ceremonies usually taking place
at the beautiful and well lit Rye Town Hall,
or one of the various denominational churches
all within short walking distance. Once again
though, its not just the stunning location and
magnificent beautiful Inn itself with courteous
and professional staff, but the owners that set
the inspiring tone. If I arrive here early
to photograph a Wedding I might catch
one of the owners carefully checking between
cobble stones for a stray cigarette stub.
It may seem an odd thing to notice, but
it illustrates to me that these people care
about their customers experience down
to the finest detail.
I am also aware both owners Judith and Robert
have contributed much to the local community
and to charitable ventures over the years.
A couple of miles south of Rye lays the
recently renovated Lodge at Winchelsea. A
contemporary modern open feel with a huge
mirrored bar area the Lodge lies nestled within
a stunning rural Sussex backdrop. With some
redefining, GM Toby Darkins is steering
things in the right upwards direction. They
offer a very cost effective exclusive Wedding
use deal where you can off set your costs with
bedroom occupancy- a very smart idea. I can
see Receptions / Weddings / Celebrations
growing and growing at the Lodge, and have
photographed some amazing customers here
already.
There are many more lovely venues in the Rye
area I havent space to mention, I have picked
3 I have photographed at numerous times,
which should illustrate just how much variety
is available in this Ancient Town area, there
truly is something for everyone.
As for the photography - well if you want to
know if I achieve great results for my
customers, I guess you can think of a few
people now who will have seen me working
and had feedback from their Wedding
customers - so why not ask them!
You can read Jons previous articles covering
various Wedding topics on his website
www.jonfirth.co.uk.
Perhaps to discuss photography once you have
settled on your locations (whether in Sussex or
further afield) why not give Jon a call?

56 ASPECT COUNTY | FOOD & DRINK
COUNTRY LIFE
The White Dog Inn, Ewhurst Green
Ewhurst Green is a small village nestling the
backwaters of the sleepy East Sussex
countryside, surrounded by picturesque rolling
farmland and woods. The locals here are well
served by their local, The White Dog Inn.
It has been the bedrock of the village for
generations. In recent times the pub has
changed hands and their reputation for
good food has spread like a low winter
mist following the hollows of the surrounding
fields and streams, threading its way to the
neighbouring hamlets and villages. The news
had spread to our household so we decided
to pay a visit to Ewhurst Green.
We wound through the country lanes on
a frosty and misty winters evening to The
White Dog and found a fine and welcoming
lazy fire smouldering within what is one of
the finest fireplaces in the county. First things
first, I enjoyed a well earned pint of Harveys
by the fire. Rustic, ruddy and country with
a well trod brick floor, old wood tables and
chairs with a sturdy bar, this pub ticks all
the boxes so far as authenticity goes. On
the blackboard you are informed our game
is locally shot and may contain shot.
My interest is not with the chains
or homogenous eateries that invade and
offend our senses, but with the original and
owner managed establishments that are sadly
becoming something of a rarity. The unique
atmosphere of these places is like gold dust-
but you know you have hit the a rich seam
within a second of being inside their four
walls. This was my impression of The White
Dog in 2012.
I had visited here on a number of occasions
over the past 30 years and the bonhomie and
buzz of the place had not changed one jot.
At The White Dog mud caked Land Rover
Defenders rub wheels with Jaguars and
Bentleys in the car park. Horses trot on past
the pub on towards the beckoning fields.
I swear that the village has not changed
a jot since my first visit there in the 70s.
Inside the talk was of Europe, stocks and
shares, the demise of the Hunt, the price of
sheep at market and who left that 12 bar gate
open.
At the bar stockbrokers mingled with local
farmers and farmhands. Reading material
includes Country Life, The Spectator and
Aspect County while some customers scanned
the broadsheets at their tables. The hubbub
of the country pub at its best. But would the
food live up to our expectations?
Rough bread and olives set us in the right
mood for food. We started with a superb
piping hot mushroom and garlic soup with
a perfect consistency. The Rye Bay Scallops
had been cooked to within a few seconds of
the correct optimum time and were absolutely
spot on. My Mezzora Pinot Grigio was the
right choice of wine to accompany the
scallops. For Bacchus the wine list enjoys
plenty of choice from Europe with a few
splashes from the New World too. Their
wine menu looks after you from appetizers
to puddings. Start with champagne and
a Laurent Perrier Brut. Finish on a high
with a choice of their pudding wines.
For in between I recommend my personal
favourite, the Chateauneuf du Pape.
The dining area at the White dog is adorned
with murals from the surrounding countryside-
Bodiam Castle, the steam railway at Northiam
and the magnificent gardens at Great Dixter.
Candles and curtains make for a cozy winter
nook to enjoy the local produce. Another
blackboard lists the local suppliers who
serve The White Dog well.
Onwards to the mains and a personal
favourite, the Dover Sole which came grilled
and served with new potatoes and a leaf salad
with dressing. From the delicious and delicate
aroma, then the sublime flavour, you can sense
the chef enjoys cooking his fish dishes.
My daughter enjoyed an excellent burger
and chunky chips and was more than pleased.
Her mother enjoyed a succulent chump of
Romney Marsh lamb with rosemary and
garlic oil. With mash and some tasty roasted
vegetables, this we can highly recommend.
The finale of the evening came with some
superb home cooked puddings. A hot
chocolate fondant hit the spot. Her mother
demolished a treacle tart, allowing no one
a morcel to taste.
The service and atmosphere is beyond fault
at The White dog. Our waitress was friendly
and effusive and knew her way around the
menu and the wines with an air of experience
and confidence beyond her age. As for the
food, of particular note are their starters and
puddings, which are momentous. The use
of the local produce from the surrounding
countryside makes for main courses that are
wholesome and unpretentious. With specials
on the blackboard, six or so starters and eight
mains, you should find something to tickle
your palate. The menu changes following
the seasons and the produce, so check their
website for a full picture-
www.thewhitedogewhurst.co.uk
If you visit The White Dog then I hope that
you enjoy a treat of an evening. If you visit
for lunch, then make sure that you check out
the gardens and enjoy the view of Bodiam
Castle. Whatever you do, make sure you call
in soon to enjoy their fire while there is still
frost on the ground outside. This pub comes
highly recommended. Enjoy.

ENTICE YOUR VALENTINE WITH HELP FROM LEITHS
Avoid the quintessentially kitsch Valentine's
day restaurant dinner this year with two
special workshops designed to let you dine
in comfortable seclusion with your own
special menu for two.
This February Leiths will be hosting two
special Valentine's classes, the first of which
will teach you to cook a fresh and impressive
menu featuring Spiced Roast Quail followed
by Champagne and Passion Fruit Jellies,
guaranteed to impress. This exciting but
relatively fuss-free menu can be reproduced
at home, allowing you plenty of time to enjoy
each other's company.
Alternatively, you can join the Leiths chefs in
the kitchen on Valentine's day itself. They have
devised a special class to guide you through
cooking a Valentine's meal for two, which
you will take home to enjoy with your dinner
guest. Highlights on the menu include Slow
roasted rack of lamb with fondant potatoes,
light and airy Meringues with passion fruit
cream and indulgent Chocolate truffles. Dining
in really is the new dining out. Guided by the
Leiths teachers, you will glean all the cooking
tips and presentation ideas required so you just
have to add the finishing touches at home, lay
the table and pour the Prosecco.
Why not extend the celebrations and treat
your Valentine to a Champagne Tasting Class.
Taught by Champagne Ambassador of the
Year, Richard Bampfield (MW), this is a
fun, informative tasting of the world's most
desirable tipple. Through a tasting of 6
Champagnes, you will learn to appreciate
the differences between vintage and non-
vintage, white and ros.
As well as learning the attributes of higher
quality Champagne, you will discover what
sort of foods and canaps tends to be the best
match. "In defeat, you need it; in victory,
you deserve it". Sir Winston Churchill
neatly summed up Champagne's unique
ability to refresh, revive and add sparkle
to any celebration.
NEW CORNISH CRAFT BREWERY SETS SAIL
Two Cornish brewers have made their dream
a reality and are launching a new craft brewery
in North Cornwall.
Brewer Rhys Powell and Eddie Lofthouse
turned their dream in to reality in early 2011
by setting up the Harbour Brewing Company
from scratch, based on the ethos of creating
a craft brewing process and brand.
They apply a progressive and innovative
approach to their beer style and brewing
technique, whilst honouring traditional and
proven methods to produce a range of full
flavoured, balanced and creative beers.
Eddie said: We are committed to making
beers that are contemporary and deliver an
uncompromising taste experience. We use
pure Cornish spring water sourced on the
hillside next to the brewery, and only the
finest raw materials. We believe this is the
only way to deliver a premium quality
product.
Starting with an installation of a brewery
system which allows the brewing to be as
creative as possible, their business took form
at their premises near Bodmin. The 10 British
brewers barrel (bbl) system was designed in
California and built in Hungary by the
American firm Bavarian Brewing
Technologies.
Rhys, who studied brewing and distilling
at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh,
explained their unconventional equipment
choice: We chose a combined mash lauter
tun, rather than a separate mash tun and a
lauter tun, as it gives us all round flexibility,
with process control and use of adjuncts. Its
more efficient than a traditional British set up.
Weve also gone for sealed cyclindroconical
fermentation vessels rather than traditional
open vessels as it is more hygienic, allows
faster fermentation, and ease of yeast
harvesting.
The business partners aim is to create a
quality, great tasting product, which is
different to other Cornish Beers in both taste
and branding. Speaking about the inspiration
for the Harbour Brewing Co, Eddie said:
Mass-market bland beer aimed at gaining
a market share is not what we are all about.
We are all about taste and creativity.
Beers from all over the world inspire us.
The craft beer scene in the USA is an obvious
place to draw inspiration and ideas, but there
are great breweries and beers from all over the
world.
We are a product-focused business and for
us its not all about profit, we have set out to
make great beers that people enjoy drinking.
Harbour Brewing Co have a starting range
of four different beers including: Harbour
India Pale Ale, their strongest beer made
using a blend of six British and American
hop varieties; malt driven Harbour Amber
Ale; Harbour Light Ale; and the Czech-
inspired pilsner Harbour Lager. All of the
range will be available on draft and in bottles.
They are also working on speciality beers
for their Harbour Special range, which will
push the boundaries and incorporate some
quirky ingredients including cassia bark,
bog myrtle, rhubarb and chilli.

NOT ONLY CELEBRITIES GET HAIR TRANSPLANTS
Celebrities such as Louis Walsh, James Nesbitt
and Wayne Rooney have all gone public about
their hair transplants, but the truth is that
thousands of ordinary men receive hair
transplant surgery every year, usually without
anyone ever knowing.
Hair Restoration Blackrock (HRBR), the hair
transplant clinic which treated Louis Walsh
and James Nesbitt, has just completed some
interesting analysis of their 2011 patients. Last
year HRBR saw in excess of 2000 regular
men, as well as a few well known faces.
"Hair loss is a great leveller. While it may be
celebrities who make the headlines, our
average patients are men of all ages and from
all walks of life. There is no doubt that when
celebrities like Wayne Rooney and Louis
Walsh go public, it helps de-stigmatise hair
restoration surgery, which is something we
greatly welcome. As well as people from the
entertainment industry and professionals, here
at HRBR in our London and Dublin clinics,
we see a wide variety of men, which includes
everyone from politicians and plumbers to
priests". Hair loss can greatly affect a man's
self esteem and self image, be he in front of
the camera or in front of a client, colleague, or
partner." said Dr. Maurice Collins, Medical
Director and Founder of HRBR.
Commenting further Dr Collins said "It doesn't
surprise me at all to see business people ahead
of actors and musicians from our 2011 patient
list. Nor I am surprised to see students in the
list. Students are the young professionals of
tomorrow, this generation is more conscious
than ever of the need to look one's best and to
look young".

NEW MEDICAL TREATMENT IS SHOCKING PATIENTS AND THEIR PAIN
A 70-year-old woman says she "feels years
younger" after undergoing a revolutionary
course of medical treatment that is becoming
more widely available in the UK and has been
proven to be an effective alternative to invasive
surgery.
Mrs Jean Dickie from Ayr in Scotland had
suffered for three years with excruciating pain
caused by Plantar Fasciitis (pain in the
underside of the heel) and had almost given up
hope of being able to find a cure.
However, she was referred to a Consultant
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon in
Glasgow and was offered a course of
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT).
ESWT is a relatively new treatment and has
been proven to be an effective alternative to
invasive surgery. It is becoming an
increasingly popular treatment form and is
currently available at 100 locations in the UK,
20% of which are NHS hospitals.
The cost of putting a patient through an ESWT
treatment course is considerably less than the
cost of invasive surgery. Out of 80% of
orthopaedic outpatient appointments, only
20% require surgery. Surgeons prefer not to
operate on patients such as Mrs Dickie
because the outcomes from surgery for plantar
fasciitis often do not prove too successful.
ESWT has the potential to save healthcare
providers considerably because patients like
Mrs Dickie will not require any further
treatment from a GP or hospital.
ESWT is particularly effective when treating a
range of chronic soft tissue injuries that are
commonly found in
patients' feet, elbows,
shoulders and hips and
can cause debilitating
pain.
Having completed a
course of three, 10-
minute ESWT treatment
sessions, Mrs Dickie was
rendered totally pain free
within a month and is
enjoying her retirement
again.
She said: "I endured
three years of terrible
pain with my heel - it
was absolutely awful. The pain was so bad
that I was often in tears. But this shockwave
therapy treatment has taken away all of the
pain and I feel years younger."
"It's a wonderful result because your mobility
is so important when you get older. If you
have any pain and discomfort it can knock
your confidence and general appetite for life.
But this treatment has had a really positive
impact on me and I'm so thankful."
Patients can access Extracorporeal Shockwave
Therapy treatment services in both the NHS
and private settings. To locate a clinic, patients
should speak to their doctor or visit
www.spectrumtechnologyuk.com and click on
the 'find a clinician' tab.
During the ESWT treatment process, low-
energy shockwaves are passed through the
skin to initiate an inflammatory response in
the injured tissue. This prompts the body to
respond naturally by increasing blood
circulation, the number of blood vessels and
therefore metabolism in the injured tissue.
This accelerates the body's natural healing
response by increasing cell generation and
dissolving calcium deposits.
"It has always been very difficult to treat some
chronic conditions because we haven't had a
truly effective solution apart from invasive
surgery," Mr Ramesh added. "But
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is
successfully filling that void and it's great that
this treatment is becoming more readily
available."

MEN TWICE AS LIKELY TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES
The incidence of Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes was
found to double for men compared to women,
according to figures released by Vhi
Healthcare. The Vhi Healthcare screening
project is the largest ever study of its kind
in Ireland. It has been underway since January
2009 and to date over 24,000 people have
been screened for type II diabetes and
cardiovascular risk factors. Of the people
screened, over 2,500 people were diagnosed
with either Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes, 1,600
of who were men compared to a little over
900 women. More women than men attended
for screening so this represents 18.5% of men
and 8.4% of the women screened.
The Vhi Healthcare study also identified
a number of findings regarding risk factors
for diabetes. Of those screened, 76% of
men were found to be overweight or obese
compared to 54% of women (based on their
body mass index) and 23% of women and
27% of men had high blood pressure on the
day of screening regardless of whether they
had been diagnosed with high blood pressure
previously or not.
Commenting on the findings Dr Bernadette
Carr, Medical Director, Vhi Healthcare said
"these figures highlight the importance for
both sexes to be aware of the risk factors for
Diabetes. Early detection and lifestyle changes
can improve outcomes, and in the case of
Pre-Diabetes can even delay or prevent
progression to Diabetes."
Commenting on the introduction of the
screening programmes and the findings of
the screening study, Dr Carr stated that "We
are facing a major epidemic of lifestyle related
diseases in the years ahead and we must take
steps to tackle it immediately. For our part
Vhi Healthcare has made the strategic decision
to position ourselves as a 'Healthcare Partner'
to our 1.2 million members and to support
their needs in the areas of illness prevention,
illness detection and illness management.
The introduction of these screening packages
is one in a series of initiatives we have
commenced over the last number of years
with the specific aim of becoming a healthcare
partner to our customers. We believe Vhi
Healthcare can play a significant role in
helping to manage future healthcare
expenditure over the next 10 years".
SMILE LIKE YOU MEAN IT
A campaign to improve the UK's oral health
in 2012 is being supported by some of the
nation's best-known brands and retailers.
Wrigley's Extra, Oral-B, Listerine, Steradent,
Bupa, Denplan, Dencover, Lloyds Pharmacy,
Aldi, Wilkinson and SleepRight are all giving
their backing to National Smile Month - the
UK's biggest annual campaign to improve oral
health.
Despite major improvements in recent
decades, millions of people in the UK are still
affected by poor oral health. It is estimated
that a third of all children starting school have
tooth decay; three in every ten adults suffer
from regular dental pain and over four-fifths
of the population have at least one filling.
More also needs to be done to improve the
nation's oral health habits. It is estimated that
a quarter of adults don't brush their teeth twice
a day and around a quarter of all adults say
they have not visited a dentist in the past two
years.
National Smile Month, which runs from 20
May to 20 June 2012, is organised by UK
charity the British Dental Health Foundation
and encourages everyone to follow three basic
rules for great oral health throughout life:
- Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day
with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Cut down on how often you have sugary
foods and drinks;
- Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they
recommend.
In 2012, the campaign is also promoting a
water-saving message in partnership with Save
Water Save Money and 19 water companies.
The British Dental Health Foundation's
Director of Campaigns and Fundraising,
Simon Howell said: "National Smile Month is
a charitable campaign that needs the support
of a wide range of supporters and sponsors to
help improve the nation's oral health.
"This year, we have received incredible
interest in National Smile Month and we
would like to thank all of our sponsors for
their educational grants and generous
charitable support. Their involvement means
millions of people in the UK will be
encouraged to improve their oral health and
the many benefits this brings."
Headline sponsors in 2012 include Oral-B,
Wrigley's Extra and Listerine. James Fulton
from Listerine said: "Listerine are proud to
partner with the British Dental Health
Foundation to support National Smile Month
2012. We are dedicated to improving oral
hygiene in the UK and think that National
Smile Month is a great way to get people
thinking about the importance of a good oral
hygiene routine. We look forward to working
together to delivering another successful
campaign this year!"
The symbol of this year's campaign is the
'Smiley' and everyone can find out more about
the campaign, and how to improve oral health

BRITAINS BURNING
92% Of Visitors To Skin Cancer Roadshow Say They Have Been Sunburnt
Survey results released today from the Mole
& Sun Advice Roadshow, organised by the
British Association of Dermatologists reveal
that 92 per cent of those asked said they had
experienced sunburn, and many had been
burnt multiple times. The survey also found
that 83 per cent of respondents agreed that the
risks of skin cancer were not exaggerated, and
yet 64 per cent (two-thirds) had never checked
their skin for signs of cancer.
Skin cancer incidence continues to rise in
the UK and over 100,000 people are newly
diagnosed with the disease every year(2).
Malignant Melanoma, the most deadly form
of the disease, is the fastest rising common
cancer and causes over 2,000 deaths in the
UK each year(2). Most cases are curable if
detected early, but if diagnosis is delayed and
the cancer spreads then your chances of
surviving are greatly reduced. This is why
the BAD and La Roche-Posay are urging more
people to pay attention to their skin, as early
detection really can be the difference between
life and death.
Results from the survey at the 2011 pilot
roadshow showed:
- Ignorance about skin changes is most
prevalent among young people. Wakestock
wakeboarding and music festival in North
Wales had the youngest demographic out of
the four events attended with 77 per cent of
the festival goers aged between 16 and 29.
Out of this group 85 per cent said they did
not check their skin for cancer. There is a
misconception that skin cancer is a disease
only of the old. Whilst this may be so for
some of the less serious non-melanoma skin
cancers, the incidence of malignant melanoma
is rising in young people aged 15 to 34 years
old, making it the second most common
cancer in this age-group. (3)
- The ages of the people advised to see their
GP for diagnosis or referral of a suspected
melanoma during last year's roadshow
confirmed the unusually young age
distribution of melanoma. Alarmingly, out of
the 11 people who were seen with a suspected
melanoma, three were in their twenties (27 per
cent) and a further three were in their thirties
(27 per cent).
- People overestimate how well-adapted
their skin is to UV exposure. Several of the
volunteer dermatologists observed people
often had more visible sun damage than
they were aware of.
Interestingly out of those who identified
their skin type as 'never burn, naturally dark
skinned' 41 per cent then admitted they had
suffered sun burn, and 94 per cent of those
who said their skin 'burns minimally and
always tans' said they had been sunburnt at
least once with 31 per cent recalling having
been burnt more than 10 times.
Part of the role of the 2012 roadshow
is to get people to better understand what type
of skin they have and how well it copes in the
sun.
The 2012 Mole & Sun Advice Roadshow aims
to make people aware of skin cancer risks and
how to enjoy the sun safely. Through practical,
face-to-face demonstrations and engagement
with the public the BAD, with the support of
sponsor La Roche-Posay, hopes to encourage
people to check their skin, seek the
appropriate form of UV sun protection, and
go to their GP if they notice any changes
to their skin.

60 YEARS & 100 MILLION
West Sussex charity celebrates 60 years of investing in top medical research
Horsham-based childrens charity, Action
Medical Research, is celebrating investing
more than 100 million into vital medical
research over the past 60 years, which has led
to some key scientific breakthroughs to help
reduce the suffering of sick babies and
children.
The charity was originally founded in 1952,
by Duncan Guthrie, in his quest to find a cure
for polio, a condition that blighted the lives of
many thousands of children including his own
daughter Janet. Early research funded by the
charity led to the development and rapid
adoption of the first oral polio vaccine which
eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.
Since then the charity has developed an
extraordinary track record in supporting some
of the most significant medical breakthroughs
in recent history breakthroughs that have
helped save thousands of childrens lives and
changed many more.
Over the last six decades, Action Medical
Research has awarded hundreds of grants and
Research Training Fellowships to top scientists
at institutions across England, Scotland, Wales
and Northern Ireland.
Key successes achieved through the years
include:
- helping introduce ultrasound scanning in
pregnancy
- discovering the importance of taking folic
acid before and during pregnancy to prevent
spina bifida
- developing an infra-red scanner to help
minimise risk of brain damage in babies
- developing a new state-of-the-art fetal heart
rate monitor to make pregnancy safer for
babies at risk
- helping to show that cooling the brain can
minimise brain damage in some newborn
babies deprived of oxygen at birth, reducing
risk of death and severe disability.
- supporting the lead researcher whose team
helped establish a vaccine for meningitis
- testing the early rubella vaccine which was
part of the first MMR vaccine
Professor David Edwards, a pioneer in the
development of treatments for newborn babies
with brain damage, said: The work supported
by Action Medical Research at hospitals and
universities over the decades has had a great
impact on the lives of babies and children.
The breadth and diversity of research
supported in the past 60 years clearly
demonstrates the importance of the funding
this charity has provided.
They have also supported the research careers
of our most promising young doctors and
scientists, many of whom have gone onto great
success as a result.
Without the support given by Action Medical
Research over the past 60 years, the research
and the subsequent medical breakthroughs and
treatments which save lives, simply wouldnt
have been possible. I am sure they will
continue to fund vital research and make a
difference to the lives of babies and children
for many years to come.
Although the research we have funded has
helped save and change so many childrens
lives, there is still so much more to learn about
what triggers diseases, how to prevent them
and how to develop effective new treatments
and find the best ways to care for sick babies
and children. Today, Action Medical Research
plays a vital role as the leading UK-wide
medical research charity dedicated to helping
babies and children.
The charity currently awards around 3
million in grants and Research Training
Fellowships every year, funding around 70
research projects at any one time.

Since the beginning in 1925, Bang & Olufsen
has focused on providing unmatched customer
experiences through a distinctive range of
high-quality products and a dedicated retail
network. Bang & Olufsen has grown from
a small local operation to a global icon
combining design excellence and technology
with strong emotional appeal.
The new Dealer Principle Michael Sparkes
has been retailing Bang & Olufsen products
for the last 24 years and has a wealth of
knowledge in technology and customer
requirements. He comments I am really
pleased to be in the position to open a flagship
Bang & Olufsen showroom in the Brighton
area. I can see so much potential in guiding
and helping clients upgrade their existing
equipment to the new digital age or even
working closely with interior designers and
property developers.
Planning a full home automated system for
new properties is something I really enjoy
and to see the smiles my clients have on
the finished project as it is demonstrated
to them is just magical. Because I have been
dealing with this sector for many years I can
understand what my clients really want and
try and integrate systems into their lifestyles".
Bang & Olufsen have a complete portfolio

home network systems, so you can play music
or watch television from any room of your

TWOS COMPANY
Finding high-quality reclaimed and refurbished items just got easier
The Old Radiator Company specialising in
original radiators for the last 12 years have
extended their interest in reclamation and
joined forces with Masco Architectural
Salvage located in Minchinhampton,
Gloucestershire. Both companies believe
strongly in the reclamation and re-use of
original items and where this is not possible
supplying quality materials from sustainable
sources.
MASCos are based in the heart of the
Cotswolds and offer a comprehensive range
of reclaimed products from traditional building
materials, architectural features, garden
ornaments, to reclaimed doors and flooring,
complimented by an extensive range of high
quality ironmongery. MASCO is also
reintroducing new product lines to extend
their range offered to the renovator, home
owner or tradesman.
Locating the perfect radiator for your house
can prove to be a difficult task as options
are sometimes limited. For best results it
is beneficial to find a supplier that not only
has an extensive range, but also a wealth
of knowledge and experience to aid you in
deciding what would best suit your home. The
Old Radiator Company boasts Europes largest
stock of original and rarer cast iron radiators
providing you with a profusion of styles.
Their supply of original radiators include an
assortment of Column radiators along with
the timeless School design, also available in
wide or narrow. The rarer range consists of
Duchess, Princess and Chubby Churchills
amongst others, not to mention their beautiful
selection of ornate pieces. When purchasing an
old radiator you are investing in a piece of
history and a work of art.
Specialising in the refurbishment of old
radiators; The Old Radiator Company provide
a thorough service. Firstly old fittings are
removed to make sure your radiator complies
with modern heating systems. They are then
flushed to ensure any old sediment from the
interior is removed before new bushes are
fitted. Possibly the most important part of the
process is the pressure testing as, with old
radiators, there may be leaks and cracks that
are so small they are not visible to the human
eye. Experts at the Old Radiator Company
combat this by carrying out extensive pressure
testing, where any drop in pressure will
indicate a problem, the damage is then located
and repaired before being checked again to
certify the correction was successful.
If, for any reason, it is not possible to repair
the damage the radiator will be rejected.
You can choose from a stock of refurbished
radiators, all which have been tested and
painted that are available for ordering straight
away. These are part of the Ready To Go
range, which includes the original School
and Column designs and a choice of stunning
Ornate and Princess radiators. Products from
this range can be delivered within 3-4 days.
For those with specific ideas in mind you can
purchase a completely bespoke radiator to
perfectly suit your chosen room. This
thorough service allows you to choose from
a huge range of assorted radiator styles and
heights to create a completely unique design
that wont be found anywhere else; from the
size to the number of sections, the valves to
the brackets. Nothing is overlooked when
deciding on those beautiful finishing touches.
You may already be aware that valves should
never be an afterthought when choosing
a period-style radiator; your selection of valve
has the ability to further enhance your radiator
so its preferable to have an array to choose
from. The Old Radiator Company stock a
choice of either manual or thermostatic valves
in various colours including Antique Brass,
Antique Copper, Black Nickel, Bright Nickel
and many more. All British made valves come
with a black lacquered walnut handwheel as
standard, however, a clear lacquered
handwheel may also be supplied if needed,
at no extra cost. In addition these are available
as 22mm or a 90 degree angled valves which
allows the pipe work to extend from the wall
if your house is furbished with solid stone
floors. Whatever style, colour way or service
chosen the radiators are all shot blasted in
house to remove paint, exposing the bare
metal; which produces a perfect, smooth base
for the final part of the process, the painting.
At The Old Radiator Company you are given
a large selection of paint options, from their
range of stock colours, metallic effect
Adenbrite paint, as well as an abundance of
popular shades available from Farrow & Ball.
Alternatively you can opt for the stunning
hand polished finish to really set apart your
new architectural statement, this amazing
finish really brings to life the history that
lies within an original cast iron radiator.
Mascos will be holding an open day on
Saturday 18th February to showcase their
newly decorated showroom and garden yard
as well as new products being introduced,
from stained glass fitted into doors, to pine
furniture and a new use for scaffold boarding!
Their extensive range of cast iron fireplaces
and radiators will be on show. There will also
be demonstrations and talks on various
subjects throughout the day and refreshments.

BATHROOM DREAMS
We look at the service on offer at Bathstore
The current economic climate has tightly
focused everyone on value for money and
lowest product costs but no more than the
Bathstore purchasing team who have
a keen eye for inspirational style, superb
manufacturing quality and passing
on savings to customers.
Bathstore have 160 stores nationwide,
making for impressive bargaining power
when it comes to negotiating the toughest
deals with suppliers worldwide. Backed by
the financial clout of Wolseley, a massive
British based company of billion pound
global interests, Bathstore continue to
establish products at price points difficult
for the competition to meet.
Dreaming about your new bathroom is just
the start of planning your bathroom. But how
will it appear in real life, does the layout really
work and compatibility of parts are critical
questions. Fortunately there is a full creative
design service offered in house. Working
closely with customers the store consultants
will use their skill and knowledge of many
years to pull together a design using a market
leading software package. Everything from
product positioning, selection and lighting
effects can be viewed and tweaked to ensure
customer satisfaction and a true understanding
of the products selected.
Interactive catalogues provide 24/7 easy
access for customers to Bathstores extensive
product range- key in the digital age of clicks
and mortar. This is achieved via the newly
launched e-commerce system. Navigation
throughout the ranges, along with prompts
to help you selected vital linked components,
makes putting together your basket of goods
a swift and pleasant experience. Best enjoyed
with a good quality wine.
Knowing your order once confirmed is
posted electronically to your local store
to be overseen by a team of able store
consultants adds further comfort to the
those who find the internet a little daunting.
For total peace of mind, talk to your local
store about the installation service. Its goes
way beyond what you might expect from
a fitting service, for example an emergency
call out dedicated line, attention to household
mishaps associated to breakdown .
Bathstore make the process easy - simply
liaise with your store consultant who will
take you through the production selection
phase, including preliminary designs, and
then leave it with them. In no time at all one
of their surveyors will be in touch to arrange
a visit.
Importantly they are not sales people sent
to take hours of your time building up to
a hard sell pitch. They are skilled site
orientated staff whose sole role is to survey
your property, listen to your needs, record
those details effectively and return concise
information to the pricing team back at base.
Again, with minimal delay, the sales
consultant you visited and have built
a working relationship with will be in touch
to provide you with a comprehensive quote
and answer any queries you may have.
If that wasnt enough Bathstore underline their
price promise and, in the unlikely event you
can present a comparable cheaper quote,
Bathstore will match this.

both need and demand the best value
for money, dealing with a company such as
Bathstore can be like a breath of fresh air.
Take comfort in the knowledgeable staff, the
price promise, product quality and large fast
moving stocks for prompt despatch.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Are Lasting Impressions at CDC
On walking into CDC Interiors, in Heathfield,
East Sussex, the first impression you get is of
the warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Since
its refurbishment in July 2011 this family run
business has excelled itself and produces not
only quality kitchens, for which they are well
known, but bathrooms, bedrooms, home
offices and full living concepts with
accessories, from rugs to lamps and furniture.
They supply and fit Matki showers with
a selection of Hansgrohe showers and taps.
CDC are also agents in the area for Laufen
Bathrooms, ranging from contemporary
to modern.
When undertaking a project in a new
or existing home it can sometimes be very
difficult to visualise what it might look like
or even what you want it to look like. I then
discovered Graham and Isabella have created
a fully functional show home above the
existing showroom. I was now eager to take
a look for myself hoping that it would help
to give me some much needed inspiration for
my new home.
The rooms have all been fully furnished with
fitted and free standing furniture. I couldnt
believe that I was standing in what is
effectively a showroom/home because it really
felt like you could move in immediately!
Every room was fully equipped to the highest
standard with no expense spared- right down
to the finest detail.
The Two bedrooms are fitted with wardrobes,
the Master showing a spacious walk-in
concept. A shower room and separate toilet
which is complete with the latest Miller
accessories and included a stunning cascade
tap in the main Bathroom.
The main living area incorporates an open
plan fully functional kitchen by Schmidt, with
free standing dining room furniture by
Loddenkemper, settee and chairs by Covercraft
who have an extensive range of other fabrics
to choose from, or you can supply your own
fabric. Rugs are by the Plantation Rug
Company and lamps by Bella Figura.
I have to say after spending a lengthy amount
of time looking around and photographing
everything I was no longer short of inspiration,
in fact I had also got a number ideas that
I was eager to see come to fruition.
If youre planning on updating your home
this spring with either that much needed
new Kitchen/Bathroom or if you just want
to spruce things up with some new furniture
and accessories I recommend you visit
CDC Interiors and get some inspiration
and expertise that will help make your
dream home come to fruition.

Khrs has introduced a stunning new
collection of authentically aged wood
floors to its Supreme Range. Crafted from
sustainable rustic oak, the new Da Capo
Collection includes six rugged one-strip
oak floors.
Each design is brushed, handscraped,
bevelled and smoked to achieve a distinct
vintage look, whilst different tones of nature
oil prefinish give a spectrum of shades, from
limewashed Oak Indossati to treacle-toned
Oak Vecchio.
With features including cracks, knots, gnarls
and pegs, the Da Capo range combines
a robust, antique look with the performance
and easy care benefits of a modern
construction.
All boards measure 1900mm x 190mm x
15mm and feature an eco-friendly multi-
layered construction. Based on Khrs
original design, patented in 1941, the award-
winning construction uses hardwood down
to the joint only, with fast-growing timber
below.
This design, alongside Khrs glueless
Woodloc joint, provides 75% greater
stability than a solid floor, eliminates
gapping and promotes fast installation.
In addition to Oak Indossati and Vecchio,
other Da Capo designs include Maggiore,
Oak Unico, Oak Sparuto and Oak
Ererditato.
All floors are offered with a 30-year
guarantee and can be laid on most dry,
level surfaces including concrete, wood
and particle board and can be installed
either floating, or glued down.
All Khrs floors are also ideal for
installation over under-floor heating.

HELP IS AT HAND FOR YOUNG DYSLEXICS
The changes we and our family have
observed in our son, even in the short time
he has been with you, have been nothing less
than miraculous, and we thank you from the
bottom of our hearts.
We cant believe the difference in our
daughter in just a few weeks. Its been
phenomenal, we cant thank your staff
enough.
I commend you for the brilliant schooling
you provide for the otherwise forgotten
children, it is sincerely remarkable.
These are just a handful of the regular
unsolicited testimonials received by Linda
Smith, Principal of Frewen College
at Northiam, the areas only specialist
school for dyslexic and dyspraxic children.
Many people think of dyslexia just in terms
of reading and writing difficulties, but it can
affect many aspects of life including co-
ordination, personal organisation, and speech.
If your child complains of not being able
to keep up in class, or their school reports
suggest they should listen more or revise
more, dyslexia may well be the cause.
The schools comprehensive website has
a very useful list of indicators of dyslexia:
see www.frewencollege.co.uk >>Parents/
Fees >>Early Indicators.
Ignored, dyslexia can be very damaging.
Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence,
so a bright dyslexic can often be falsely
accused of being lazy, not concentrating, or
not trying hard enough. Failure to keep up in
class can lead to isolation, loss of self esteem,
and eventually school refusal, misbehaviour,
and even exclusion. The sooner action is
taken, the better the results are likely to be.
Support in mainstream schools for the
moderately dyslexic has improved greatly
in recent years, although specialised staff
training is threatened by cut backs. But for
the more severely affected child to thrive
and achieve their potential, consistent support
is vital and this can only be provided by
a whole school approach delivered through
fully trained classroom staff.
As reflected in the testimonials above, once
liberated by the appropriate support, the
release from years of frustration and failure
can be quite remarkable. Many parents
comment on the impact on the whole family,
and comments such as Weve got our son
back are not uncommon.
Frewen College has four Open Mornings every
term, when they are happy to show parents
around the unique facilities, and discuss
whether they may be able to help your child.
RYE LIONS HAPPY TO HELP BECKLEY PLAYGROUP
Beckley Pre-School Playgroup have been
wanting a sign outside Beckley Village Centre
for some time, as visitors and delivery vans
have had difficulty in finding them and tended
to end up at Beckley Primary School. Jill
Brain, Manager of the Playgroup and also
Northiam Nursery approached Rye and
District Lions Club to see if they could help
with funding the sign and the Lions were
pleased to donate 100 towards the cost
of the sign.
The very attractive sign in the photo has now
been installed and the Lions were invited to
the "unveiling" of the sign and to meet the
staff and children.
Rye Lions President, Terry Cobby, said
"Although the Lions are a large international
organisation and Rye Lions have supported
many international appeals, such as the East
African Famine, the earthquakes and floods
in Pakistan, New Zealand, Japan etc, they also
donate to many local charity appeals. We have
been pleased in the last year to have donated
a total of 12,482 to various good causes,
including Rye Community Transport, Rye
Scouts, St Michael's Hospice, Surviving
Christmas, Conquest Hospital, Rye British
Legion and ARRCC, the Activities, Respite
Rehabilitation Care Centre in Rye. Donations
have also been given to Pre-School Playgroups
and Nurseries in Rye, Northiam and Westfield.
This could not be done without the continuing
support of the public in Rye and the villages
around."
Beckley Pre-School Manager, Jill Brain, said
"Our Play Group operates Monday to Friday
from 09am to 12pm and we have vacancies
for children from 2 years.
Any parent interested can contact me on
01797 260582 during Playgroup hours.

THE STORY BEHIND VINEHALL
Vinehall School stands in 40 acres of stunning
grounds and offers its pupils their own golf
course, Astroturf, indoor swimming pool,
tennis courts, theatre, as well as state of the
art classrooms with interactive whiteboards
and impressive ICT/Library complex. Built
in 1838 by Tilden Smith, a partner in Hastings
Old Bank as his family home, it was not until
100 years later in 1938 that it became
a School.
The Schools history is very much in evidence
as you walk around when each child leaves
the school at age 13, a shield is made
detailing their achievements during their
time at Vinehall in the areas of responsibility,
academic and co-curricular, as well as
including the name of their next school
and the dates they attended Vinehall.
The shield of every pupil is on display within
the School. Alumni of the School include
members of the rock band Keane, Tom Avery,
one of the few men to reach both the north
and south poles on foot and Tim Smit, creator
of the Eden project, whose own shield shows
a garden rake in the co curricular section.
An interesting clue to the future!
The School has a reputation for being
academically strong, but it is by no means
academically elite. The emphasis is very
much on working with each child to help them
achieve their potential. For some, this may
be a scholarship at 13+ to one the countrys
top independent schools, for others it may
be playing in the first team, having a part
in the latest drama production, singing in the
School choir or being awarded a Good Copy
for an excellent piece of work. All these
achievements are valued and all are
recognised.
NEW YEAR AT CHARTERS ANCASTER
With spring just around the corner much
is planned for all our pupils from aged 2 13
years, said Miriam Black,Head Teacher at
Charters Ancaster
Academically, The school will be building on
last terms successes and aiming to improve
and achieve each childs potential. The older
children have opportunities to sit scholarship
tests: many already have awards and places
in Independent Senior Schools. Internal
opportunities are also available on application
for Charters Ancaster Scholarships and
bursaries. Education for your child at Charters
Ancaster is more affordable than you may
realise.
Individual music lessons are offered piano,
violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, brass
instruments, singing and they are very proud
of their Choir, String Group and Brass
Ensemble. Drama activities also play a very
important part at Charters Ancaster music
and drama scholarships as well as sports also
available.
Are you looking for places in Reception Class
for September? The 4 year old transition group
is now open within the Preprep Department.
This group gives children a great preparation
to aid integration into school from Nursery.
The nursery now offers separate rooms for
2 and 3 year olds in their fabulous purpose
built nursery. There is a newly opened 4 year
old room adjacent to our Preprep Department.
Each room is led and staffed by experienced
qualified nursery practitioners.
All early years rooms have access to their
own outside spaces and are fully equipped
to deliver the Early Years Curriculum covering
all areas of learning. You are able to claim up
to 15 hours completely free (terms apply) for
your 3 and 4 year olds. Child care vouchers
are also accepted.
More information is available on the website

ROTHERFIELD CHURCH
Written by Roger Paine
92 ASPECT COUNTY |
CHURCHES
Set high on a ridge above the Ashdown Forest,
just a mile or so from the town of
Crowborough and seven miles from Tunbridge
Wells, is the village of Rotherfield. It is
believed to be one of the oldest Saxon
settlements in what originally was a vast area
of oak forest. The parish church of St Denys,
on raised ground flanking the main street,
dominates the village.
A church on this site can be traced back over
1,200 years to when Duke Bertoald, the local
Saxon lord whose estates included the village
of Rotherfield and who after falling seriously
ill was unable to find a cure at home, made
a pilgrimage to the Benedictine Abbey of
St Denys in France. Here were kept the holy
relics of St Denys which were said to work
miracles and the monks had become well-
known for their prayers for the sick. After
several days of prayer, Bertoald recovered
from his illness and returned to Rotherfield
where in AD792 he built a church as a thank-
offering. He also gave it the same name as
that where he had been healed. A translation
of the Dukes will, threatening eternal
punishment for anyone attempting to usurp
his gift, hangs in the church.
Apart from the present site and dedication
nothing now remains of Bertoalds original
eighth century church. Almost certainly
it would have been built of wood from the
surrounding forest and may have been burned
by the invading Danes before their eventual
defeat by King Alfred. In the churchyard is
a giant yew tree supported by posts and
certified by the Conservation Foundation to
be at least 1,500 years old. It is worth taking
a moment to reflect that this tree, now
practically hollow, would have been well-
established when the present sandstone church
was built around 1060.
The church is impressively large for a village
and externally somewhat austere with
a heavily buttressed and battlemented tower.
But the immaculately maintained interior,
comprising eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth
century parts, with fifteenth century additions,
has numerous interesting features. The oldest
areas are the nave, chancel and Nevill Chapel
on the north-east corner. Although this 900-
year old chapel has been much altered there
is evidence of Saxon stonework on the
external walls and a Tudor fireplace was
uncovered during alterations in 2001.
The chapel, named after the Nevill branch
of the Abergavenny family, local lords of the
manor from 1450, may have been built on the
site of the early wooden church. There are two
imposing wooden beams across the roof and
the ceiling displays carved bosses including
two green men and other grotesque heads.
The twelfth century nave was originally
rectangular with a flat roof, the recesses
for the beams are still visible above the
magnificent chancel arch, but this was later
extended upwards and the arched rafters
now provide a lasting tribute to the skill
of medieval craftsmen. The north aisle,
with circular pillars dates from the thirteenth
century and the south aisle, with octagonal
pillars, from the fourteenth.

One of the most remarkable features of
St Denys is the wall paintings. All are over
six hundred years old. For several centuries
they were completely covered but despite
the ravages of time they provide a fascinating
example of the early paintings which at one
time would have decorated every available
surface. First exposed in 1893 many have
since faded but the fifteenth century Doom
painting above the chancel arch facing the
nave, showing Christ seated on a rainbow with
his feet on an orb and his forearms raised, can
be clearly seen. Below Him are the heads of
two monks which are thought to refer to the
churchs early foundation. On the left of the
arch is winged St Michael weighing on
a balance the souls of the departed.
A reminder to the congregation as they
look upwards that everyones life may,
at the last, be found wanting!
Among several treasures is the exquisitely
carved oak pulpit with winged lions around
the edge and a decorated canopy supported
by two eagles. Originally in the Archbishop
of Yorks palace at Bishopsthorpe it was made
four hundred years ago in the days of Oliver
Cromwell by Francis Gunby of Leeds.
Archbishop William Thomsons daughter
married Canon Goodwyn, Rector of
Rotherfield from 1889 to 1898, and the
pulpit was installed in 1896 as a memorial
to the Archbishop.
The octagonal carved oak font cover, near the
south door, was made in 1533 and includes the
coat of arms of the Nevill family. This depicts
the ship in which the ancestors of George
Nevill, then Lord of the Manor of Rotherfield
and a friend of Henry VIII, accompanied
William the Conqueror to England. The
original Norman stone font stands close by.
It went missing for a number of years until
found in a local field being used as a cattle
trough. How it came to be there has never
been satisfactorily explained although when
discovered in 1816 a Churchwarden, Samuel
Wickens, was the tenant of the farm!
Beneath the engraved brass First World
War memorial, listing the names of those
Rotherfield men who were killed in action,
is an unadorned wooden table. This was
used by Archbishop Randall of Canterbury
when he held a field service at Hesdin in
Northern France on Sunday 21st May 1916.
Some of the soldiers who received Holy
Communion from the Head of the Anglican
Church on that day were surely destined to
die in the trenches. The Battle of the Somme,
which started on 1st July 1916, resulted in the
loss of 58,000 British lives.
A notable feature of St Denys is the stained
glass. The earliest being fragments of
fourteenth century glass at the top of the east
window in the Nevill Chapel and believed
to be some of the earliest in Sussex. The five-
light Perpendicular east window of the chancel
has stained glass made in 1878 by the eminent
Victorian, William Morris. This window,
which depicts the Te Deum, was designed
by the artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones.
The delicately drawn figures and foliage
springing from a single root, although partially
obscured by the intricate alabaster reredos,
form a unique and outstanding example
of Pre-Raphaelite art.
The churchs original timber-framed spire
was destroyed in the hurricane of
October1987. On the east wall of the south
aisle hangs a wooden cross, dedicated by the
Bishop of Chichester on 15th October 1989,
and made from one of the original beams
supporting the spire. Nearby is all that remains
of the original gilded cross from the top of the
spire. The new spire which rises to a height of
165 feet was lowered into position in sections
from a helicopter. It is now supported by steel
beams and has chestnut shingles,
Rotherfield Church has been eulogized by a
parishioner in a charming poem My Village.
The verse: The church five centuries strong
within the village, Its Norman font beneath the
stair, It has withstood both fire and pillage, Its
Eucharist bells still pierce the air, seems to
sum up, in a few simple words, the beautiful
and historic church of St Denys.

STARTING UP A PENSION FOR THE NEW YEAR
Is your new years resolution to lose weight or
to give up smoking, so you can have a
healthier lifestyle? Have you considered
making your resolution to start a pension?
Figures show from the Pensions Policy
Institute that only 40% of men and just 37% of
women have a non-state pension. Here are a
few tips when it comes to pension planning.
1. Start saving for your pension early
It may seem really obvious but the younger
you are when you start a pension, the better,
because it means youve got more time to
make contributions and there is more time for
those invested contributions to grow.
According to a study published in September
2010 by Aviva, in conjunction with
accountants Deloitte, the UK adults now need
to save an average of 10,300 every year to
catch up.
2. Join your employers occupational
pension scheme
If your employer offers membership of an
occupational pension scheme, join it. These
are employer-run schemes that have trustees
who are responsible for the schemes being run
properly, legally and fairly. If your employer
has a scheme, it is almost always in your
interests to join because of the employer
contribution, which is in effect a tax-free
benefit. More than one million people who
could join company schemes dont, according
to the National Association of Pension Funds.
3. Take advantage of tax relief from HMRC
Make the most of tax breaks. Tax relief
reduces your tax bill or increases your pension
fund. Anyone, including children and non-
taxpayers, can receive tax-relief from HM
Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to help increase
their pension. The way you get tax relief on
pension contributions depends on whether you
pay into an occupational, public, service or
personal pension scheme. Contributions attract
basic-rate tax relief. So 80 paid into a
pension is automatically increased to 100
before costs. High earners can achieve the
same effect by paying in 60, subject to
complex and charging restrictions.
4. Increase the control over where you
invest your money
Unlike most traditional personal pensions, a
self-invested personal pension (SIPP) offers
you different investment options and gives you
more choice and control over where you can
invest your money. There are significant tax
benefits. The government contributes 20 per
cent of every gross contribution you pay. If
youre a higher or additional tax ratepayer, the
tax benefits could be even greater.
When you wish to withdraw the funds from
your SIPP, currently between the ages of 55
and 75, you can normally take up to 25 per
cent of your fund as a tax-free lump sum. The
remainder is then made available to provide
you with a taxable income. As with all
investments, the value of the fund you have
invested can go down as well as up and you
may not get back as much as you invest. The
increase cost and control of a SIPP will
generally come with higher charges, so for
individuals not requiring the additional
flexibility, a traditional personal pension may
be more appropriate.
5. Pay extra National Insurance
contributions
Consider paying extra National Insurance
contributions (NICs) to increase the state
pension. This is most likely to benefit women
who have taken time off work, perhaps to
bring up children. However, you need to
beware of means of test. There could be risks
associated with buying back missing years of
your NICs and you should always obtain
professional financial advice. Although buying
back missing years can be a good deal, the
government wont go out of its way to tell
people about this with its finances stretched.

NEW HYPER-CAT XKR-S
The latest beast from the Jaguar Stable
When Jaguar created the new XKR-S,
it had a simple aim -- to build its fastest
mass-produced car ever. The latest hyper-cat
is based largely on the standard XKR, but
promises even more exhilarating performance,
thanks to lowered, computer-controlled
suspension, tweaked engine-management
software, and new computer-designed body
panels that promise the aerodynamic efficiency
of a salmon.
We took the XKR-S for a spin to find out
whether this 98,000 beast is all it's cracked
up to be.
One look at the XKR-S is all it takes to realise
that this car is focused on speed. Numerous
tweaks to its bodywork are geared towards
improving aerodynamic balance and
preventing the car from lifting off when
travelling at high velocity. The front end,
modelled using fancy computational fluid
dynamics software, features twin cat-style
nostrils for extra cooling, a carbon-fibre
splitter that deflects air underneath the car,
and vertical side intakes that channel air
along the car's side skirts.
Jaguar has coaxed extra power from the
unit by remapping the software that dictates
how much fuel is injected into the engine.
The company's also increased the quantity
of exhaust gas flowing through the car's new
active exhaust system. The system uses special
flaps that open at high revs to help the engine
breathe more easily -- and scream more
loudly.
Finally, Jaguar's bolted on a Roots-type
twin-vortex supercharger, whose sole purpose
is to ram more air into the engine to achieve
bigger explosions during the combustion
process. The company says this unit is 20 per
cent more efficient at creating additional
power than the supercharger used in the XKR.
The end result of this added power is savage
performance. The XKR-S will achieve
0-60mph in a blistering 4.2 seconds, and
will carry on accelerating until it reaches
a top speed of 186mph, which, on paper,
makes it the fastest mass-produced Jaguar
ever.
Numbers don't quite do justice to the sheer
brutality of this car's acceleration. Nail the
throttle and you'll swear you've just activated
the afterburner in an F-16 fighter jet. The rear
wheels seem not to push the car forward, but
to pull the planet towards you at a frightening
rate.
Whichever mode you select, you can be sure
that the XKR-S will emit an exhaust note to
match its acceleration. Bury the accelerator
and it'll make a din that can best be described
as the sound of a Tyrannosaurus Rex gargling
hand grenades in a thunderstorm. It's a brutish,
primeval bellow that, in conjunction with the
car's epic thrust, will leave you whooping
like a 12-year-old on a rollercoaster.
The XKR-S is startlingly agile. Push it hard
and it'll thread its way through twisty B roads
with great poise, gripping the tarmac as if its
20-inch P Zero tyres have sprouted claws.
With such startling performance, you could
be forgiven for thinking the XKR-S
is something of a beast when driving
in everyday conditions, but you'd be wrong -
it's extremely relaxing. The car's suspension
seems to absorb imperfections in the road
better than that of some everyday road cars,
and it's quiet when cruising at speed.
The system works brilliantly, transforming the
XKR-S from super-taut race car to super-soft
cruise mobile without the driver having to lift
a finger. It knows what you need and delivers
it to you on a plate.
While Jaguar has done plenty to increase the
awesomeness of the XKR-S' performance and
looks, it's done relatively little to improve the
contents of the cabin. The car uses the same
cabin technology as the standard XKR, so
an 8-inch display serves as the gateway to all
of the information and entertainment settings.
The user menu is extremely easy to navigate.
Unlike many high-end cars, which use
ridiculous joysticks, knobs or even mice that
control an on-screen cursor, the XKR-S uses
a resistive touchscreen. If you see an icon on
the display, you select it the good old-
fashioned way - by prodding it with a meat
stylus.
The Jaguar XKR-S is a fantastic car, whose
multifarious talents won't fail to astonish.
It's savagely quick and remarkably agile
around twisty roads and race circuits, yet
it offers a level of comfort usually reserved
for high-end luxury limousines.
Its cabin technology, while impressive on the
whole, could do with sprucing up to bring it
in line with Jaguar's new XJ, but don't let that
put you off. The XKR-S is a wonderful piece
of high-performance engineering that can
easily trade blows with the Porsche 911
GT3 RS and Aston Martin V8 Vantage S.

MIGHTY, IMPRESSIVE
AMG Coup black series hits the mark
Broad, low, brawny and ready to pounce from a
standstill - the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
Coup Black Series makes a mighty
impression. It's clear right from the first time
you set eyes on it that the C63 AMG Coup
Black Series is made for ambitious laps on
a closed-off race track. In visual terms the
new high-performance vehicle is reminiscent of
the SLS AMG GT3 customer sports car and
symbolises the transfer of technology from the
sphere of motorsport, which has been part of
the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMG
GmbH for 44 years now.
With its new C63 AMG Coup Black Series,
AMG is presenting an exciting sports car for
enthusiasts who are passionate about sports cars
which are big on horsepower, and this marks
the impressive continuation of the
Black Series strategy, which began back
in 2006. AMG, the performance brand
of Mercedes-Benz Cars, is once again
demonstrating its expertise when it comes
to designing and developing emotionally
appealing high-performance cars.
It doesn't matter from which angle you're
looking at it: the new Mercedes-Benz C63
AMG Coup Black Series displays its ties with
motorsport from every perspective. The arrow-
shaped front section with the central Mercedes
star in the radiator grille is the visual synonym
for its unfettered forwards thrust. The air
intakes in the striking front apron ensure
reliable air flow through the large cooling
modules. Two openings in the aluminium
bonnet support the expelling of engine heat,
whilst the struts positioned at an angle in the
front apron emphasise the vehicle's width. The
black front splitter located at the lower end
helps to balance the vehicle aerodynamically.
255/35 R 19 and 285/30 R 19 - these are the
impressive wheel formats for the Mercedes-
Benz C63 AMG Coup Black Series at its
market launch. The wheel/tyre combination is
mounted on 9 x 19 (front) and 9.5 x 19 (rear)
AMG light-alloy wheels, fills out the wings
to stunning effect and plays a significant part
in the dynamic appearance of this new AMG
sports car.
Painted titanium grey, the high-sheen light-
alloy wheels are produced using particularly
light forging technology - as is the case on the
SLS AMG. These forged wheels weigh a total
of eleven kilograms less than comparable
wheels with a conventional design. The lower
weight results in reduced unsprung masses,
which improves both the suspension's response
and the steering precision.
A displacement of 6.3 litres, a maximum output
of 380 kW (517 hp) and a torque of 620
newton metres from eight cylinders - one
glance at the technical data and it's clear that
the engineering behind the Mercedes-Benz C63
AMG Coup Black Series is every bit
the equal of its sensational appearance. The
uprated V8 engine has an easy time of it in the
coup: the sprint from standing to 100 is over
in 4.2 seconds.
Plenty of pulling power, an agile response and
hefty torque - the qualities of the large-
displacement AMG high-speed naturally
aspirated engine arouse unadulterated passion
in the driver. The jewel in the crown is the
emotive, hallmark AMG eight-cylinder
sound from the AMG sports exhaust system.
The AMG sports suspension is a sophisticated
new development. It has been designed
as a coil-over suspension, as is the norm
in motorsport - and it represents a hallmark
feature of a Black Series model. It offers
numerous setting options, and allows the driver
to create their own personal set-up.
The track width of the axles has been widened
by 40 (at the front) and 79 millimetres (at the
rear) respectively. In conjunction with the
modified torsion-bar stabilisers, the Mercedes-
Benz C63 AMG Black Series impresses with its
pronounced driving dynamics, high grip and
low roll angle. The AMG speed-sensitive sports
steering facilitates superb vehicle control: the
retuned map control for the power assistance
ensures optimum steering precision.
AMG has two special packages to offer
for enhancing driving dynamics even further:
the AMG Track Package comprises 255/35 R
19 front and 285/30 R 19 rear sports tyres from
Dunlop. They have been exclusively developed
for the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coup Black
Series, and they tangibly and measurably
increase grip. Active rear-axle transmission
cooling improves performance in punishing
race-track conditions. The radiator is located in
the rear apron and the airflow passes through
it effectively.
Whilst its driving dynamics are totally suited
to the race track, the new Mercedes-Benz C63
AMG Coup Black Series offers all the
properties which characterise a true Mercedes-
Benz; suitabile for everyday use.

BLISTERING BENCHMARK
The Gumpert Apollo S delivers speed off the scale
With a less than glamorous name and looks
to match it was hard to know what to make
of the Gumpert Apollo when we drove a very
early development car back in the summer of
2005.
Created by a team of hardened engineers who
seemed oblivious to the vanity, hype and myth
that normally define the supercar breed, the
future for this no-frills Germanic road-racer
was hard to predict, despite the Apollo
delivering a rampant driving experience. Two
years later and were back behind the wheel,
this time in a full production version, both on
UK roads and at the Bedford Autodrome.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Apollo,
and the men behind it, a quick recap. The
brainchild of former Audi engineer Roland
Gumpert and based in Altenburg in the far east
of Germany, the Apollo draws heavily on his
racing experience and his enduring links with
the Ingolstadt manufacturer. Using a twin-
turbocharged version of Audis 4.2-litre 90-
degree V8 complete with lightweight
internals and mated to a six-speed sequential
transmission, the Apollo is available in three
versions: Apollo, Apollo S (for Sport), and
Apollo R (for Race). Were testing the 690bhp
S version, as opposed to the 641bhp entry-
level Apollo or the lighter and more powerful
(789bhp) R. It costs 275,000 and promises a
top speed of around 225mph, together with
mind-altering race-car-for-the-road dynamics.
Once in, youll note how small the cockpit is,
and that the seat, or at least what passes for
a seat, is in fact a strategically padded shell
fixed directly to the firewall. Fortunately the
pedals and the steering wheels rake and reach
are easily adjusted and you can get
surprisingly comfortable surprisingly
quickly, although if youre much over 6ft
tall or particularly broad of shoulder the
Apollo is unlikely to be as welcoming
as, say, a Carrera GT or Pagani Zonda.
A mix of clean, simple ergonomics and
familiar Audi switchgear, the Apollos interior
trades flamboyance for functionality. Theres a
lot to pack in to such a narrow dashboard, yet
everything from the bespoke Racelogic
traction control display panel to the Pioneer
pop-out satnav system appears well integrated
and easy to operate. Some of the finishing is
typical of very low volume hand-built cars but
the overall impression is encouragingly
cohesive, particularly for a car so clearly
conceived as a thinly disguised road-going
race car.
Its not all whiz-bang, omigawd acceleration,
though, for the Apollo is an easy and
undemanding car to guide at sane speeds.
The steering is both light and linear, the front
end responding directly but with encouraging
feel. There are massive reserves of grip, but far
from it dominating the experience the Apollos
chassis is talkative and reactive, while its
reassuring to note that the front tyres are
the first to find their limit, the tail feeling
supremely tied-down, even at elevated road
speeds.
Its a mark of the Apollos latent potential that
a circuit is essential to truly discover what its
all about. Fortunately we manage to secure
some time at Bedford Autodrome, although
not on our regular West circuit test track but
on the complexs monster GT circuit. Its
frustrating that we cant attach our test gear
and go for a lap time, but the GT circuits
extra length really allows the Apollo S to
hit its formidable stride.
On the GT circuits main straight we
repeatedly pull 160mph without really trying,
before working the huge and hugely effective
brakes (cast iron discs clamped by Apollo-
branded AP callipers). Hugely stable into
the corners, thanks in no small part to the
considerable rear aerofoil and underbody-
generated downforce, the Apollo Ss limits
arent something you rush to find. Rather
you nudge closer and closer to them, building-
up to the point at which you begin to feel
it move beneath you.
Whats certain is that when we get the Apollo
S back to Bedford, it has the ability to lay
down a blistering new benchmark time on
the West Circuit, eclipsing the Carrera GTs
1.19.70sec and perhaps even challenging
the Radical SR3s 1.17.10sec lap for outright
honours. Now where did I leave those brave
pills?
