Ensuring Every Students Success

Advisory Program: Every John Mac student will have an advisor who will stay with them through their years at the school, acting as the students advocate and liaison between school and family. John Macs advisories are a primary vehicle for creating a more personalized learning environment where all students are well known. The advisory aims to promote academic achievement by supporting students development of self-monitoring skills, engaging in exposure to and practice with post-high school expectations, and engaging students in small group discussion on the topics of adolescent development and life. Advisory curriculum will include restorative justice content, goal-setting and time management, community-building, college and nancial planning in collaboration with guidance counselors, and adult workplace skills and actual work experience in collaboration with the internship coordinator. Guidance Counseling: To prepare John Mac students for success in college and beyond, the new John Mac has guidance counselors dedicated to each grade. Guidance counselors rst meet their students in Summer Bridge and develop their relationships with scheduled check-ins and regular college visits. Guidance counselors work closely with the schools specialists including social workers, special education teachers, and educational technologists to make certain that students are getting all the supports they need to reach their academic and personal goals. Guidance counselors work hand in hand with John Macs internship coordinator to develop the best professional placements, and with advisors to make certain that students apply to and are accepted by the colleges that are right for them. Internship Coordination: John Mac wants all its students not only to be exposed to the ways learning drives real-life achievement, but also to experience it hands-on. The internship coordinator for the school builds on community connections o ered by the board, parents and community supporters, connecting every 11th grade student with appropriate opportunities, and rigorously preparing for and monitoring the success of each placement. Under the oversight of the internship coordinator, Juniors will take an internship companion course to facilitate problem-solving and re ection on their experiences. Summer Sessions: Every student entering John Mac will participate in a three-week Summer Bridge designed to target essential skills in literacy and math, acclimate students to the John Mac culture, and build relationships among students and their teachers. During this time, students will take assessments that teachers will use to create school-year programs tailored to their individual needs. Each subsequent summer, students will participate in summer classes as necessary to guarantee that students graduate on-time and reach their goals.
