to LA Country Office of Education that eliminates adult education programs and severely reduces Regional Occupational Centers/Programs (ROC/P) for the 2012-13 school year. The money allocated for these programs will be used for other District purposes. Superintendent Deasy, in a recent interview, mentioned the value of Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE) programs but stated that his fundamental responsibility is to the K-12 student. Due to the budget crisis, many programs will have to be cut. His 30-minute interview can be heard on the link below. http://www.scpr.org/programs/patt-morrison/2011/12/21/21852/lausd-superintendent-johndeasy-talks-about-change/ Inform Your Community Our students, parents and community members need to apprise our legislators, school board members and community of how our programs serve the K-12 as well as the adult community. Approximately 40% of all high school students take adult education courses to fulfill requirements for a high school diploma. ROC/P programs provide career employment training to secondary students and adults. . 50% of the DACE students are parents of K-12 students and are models for their children. Adult education classes provide a pathway to citizenship and are an integral part of immigration reform. Funding for DACE classes is based on adult ed and ROC/P attendance. These classes do not use funds from the K-12 general budget. The DACE goal is to see all students including young adults graduate and/or be trained for a good job. Adult education has been a part of the District for over 100 years, and ROC/P programs have been serving LAUSD students since the 1960s. Cuts to these programs would have an adverse effect on students access to higher education, improved living conditions and civic participation. Communicate by February 1, 2011 Write & meet with your community members, legislators and school board members to prevent the closing of adult education and ROC/P programs at LAUSD. Tell your elected officials how adult schools, center and programs have benefitted you or your childs education, graduation and/or job training.
