Written by an analyst within the Indian market, this report provides an Indian
perspective on fixed, broadcast and mobile segments of the satellite industry. NSR's
proven interview and forecasting methodology are combined with the nuances of
the Indian satellite market to give the reader a comprehensive qualitative and
quantitative analysis. The Indian Satellite Markets report focuses on the supply of
domestic and international satellite capacity, demand from every major application
and regulations that govern businesses in the region.

London-based Inmarsat, which for the past 10 years has
watched certain of its market segments erode because of
competition from Iridium and Globalstar of the United States,
and Thuraya of United Arab Emirates, is making no claims
about enlarging the market with its IsatPhone Pro.
In an interview, Sukawaty said the goal of the product is
simply to take customers from Iridium, Globalstar and
Thuraya, and prevent these companies from making more
inroads into Inmarsats business

Terrorists involved in the Mumbai terror attacks were tech-savvy. If you've been following news on television, you'd
have heard about the terrorists using 'satellite phones' for communication; one of these devices was recovered from a
trawler abandoned on the high seas.

As it turns out, this gadget is now one of the most crucial pieces of evidence connected to the terror attacks on
Mumbai that provides some proof about the identity of the terrorists; it shows that calls have been made to Karachi
before and after attacks commenced.

Reportedly, Thuraya-to-Thuraya satellite phones were used by these terrorists to ensure that there was no record of
the conversations between them and their handlers in Pakistan.

Now, you've heard of cell phones; what on earth is a satellite phone?

Cell phones and satellite phones are both mobile phones. The basic difference between the two is that cell phones
are dependent on the networks of terrestrial cell antennas, while a satellite phone or satphone, on the other hand,
uses orbiting satellites for connectivity.

Satellite phones are normally operated through International Marine Satellite (Inmarsat) Communication, for which
the Land Earth Station (LES) in India is located at Arvi, near Pune.

Why use a satellite phone?

Satellite phones can come in handy when you're in a disaster-struck area and your usual cell phone network
becomes clogged due to the large number of calls being dialed. Also, if you plan to go to a place where no cell phone
network provider has dared to provide services, a satellite phone can keep you connected with the rest of civilization.

Services to the satellite phones used by the terrorists in the Mumbai terror attacks were provided by 'Thuraya,' which
covers 99 countries including India.

Essentially, satellite phones are used around the world by those on expeditions in the high seas, north/south poles,
and by those who live in mountainous or dense forest regions.

Interestingly, these phones can also keep your conversations classified, so you need not worry about the Navies and
Coast Guards eavesdropping while you are talking the talk.

How do satellite phones work?

The functioning of cellular phones depends on zones or small base stations called cells . As a user moves from one
area to another or a cell, the call is handed off from the old to a new cell.

In case of satellite phones, there is no concept of cells or cell towers. The most popular hand held satellite telephones
use Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites, while another one is geosynchronous orbit . When one turns on the satellite
phone the signal goes up to any number of satellites in a compatible constellation where it is then registered with the
constellation.

Popular companies offering satellite phone services are Iridium, Globalstar, and Dubai-based Thuraya, one which
was used by the terrorists involved in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Where can you get a satellite phone in India for personal use?

Well, you most probably can't because personal use of satellite phones is not legal in India. Our country does not
offer licences for operating satellite phones on a commercial basis.

However, INMARSAT (International Maritime Satellite Organisation) phones are available through Tata
Communications (formerly VSNL) but these are sold only to security and government agencies. Bharat Sanchar
Nigam Ltd (BSNL) also provides a variant of the phone, called digital satellite public telephone (DSPT), but these too
are installed only as public telephones in villages.

What can we do to restrict tech-savvy terrorists who use satellite phones?

Block them! There are mobile phone jammers available that can obstruct the use of these devices. Reportedly, DoT
officials have said that they are exploring ways to monitor and jam (when necessary) satellite phone communications
in India.

One can only wait and watch to see how long it takes the concerned agencies to do just that. Hopefully, the country
will be better prepared to tackle such attacks carried out by cold-blooded killers in the future, who would probably be
equipped with more sophisticated weapons and communication gadgets.

1. ignificance
o The cost of a satellite phone includes the initial expense of the phone itself. It also includes the cost
for a monthly subscription, the minutes used for each call and any activation fees. Satellite phones
range in price from about $700 to $1,300, depending on the brand, its features and the retailer that's
selling it. Basic subscriptions generally cost about $50 per month, but these subscriptions--unlike cell
phone plans--do not include any minutes or airtime. The cost of airtime varies widely depending on
the type of call; it may range from $1 to $10 per minute. Activation fees for most satellite phones run
about $40 to $50.
Types
o The major brands of satellite phones include Inmarsat, Iridium and Thuraya. The Inmarsat IsatPhone
is a handset style phone that costs about $700. The Iridium handset phone costs about $1,500, and
Thuraya offers satellite phones for about $1,000 to $1,300. Minutes for the Inmarsat IsatPhone cost
about $1 for voice calls to PSTN or cell phones, $2 for calls to most other Inmarsat phones, and $3
to Iridium or Thuraya satellite phones. Iridium charges about $1 per minute for calls to PSTN phones
or voice mail, less than $1 per minute for calls to other Iridium phones and over $10 per minute for
calls to other brands of satellite phones. Calls between Thuraya phones cost about $1 per minute,
while calls to other brands of satellite phones cost about $6 per minute and calls to other types of
phones cost about $1.50 per minute.
Features
o Since satellite phones can only be outdoors--where there is a clear path between the phone and the
satellite--all three major brands also offer terminals that allow the phones to be used indoors. These
terminals generally cost about $2,000 to $7,000 for stationary terminals, and they cost $18,000 to
$25,000 for terminals that can be attached to a vehicle. Most terminals also include data
transmission services, although these services may require extra monthly and per minute costs.
Function
o There are two major ways that satellite phones can function. Geosynchronous satellites are located
over 20,000 miles above the Earth, and these satellites stay fixed relative to the planet's rotation,
allowing greater coverage per satellite and therefore requiring fewer satellites. However, the
distance can also cause a delay or echo when talking on the satellite phone. Inmarsat and Thuraya
phones use these types of satellites, and Thuraya also offers dual mode phones that combine both
satellite and GSM phone services. Iridium phones use 66 Low Earth Orbiting, or LEO, satellites.
These types of satellites, being about 500 miles above the earth, typically do not have a delay.
Unlike cell phone providers, satellite phone services generally do not charge roaming fees, since
their phones either work or do not work within a given area, depending on the satellite coverage.
Geography
o The primary benefit of satellite phones is their ability to provide coverage in areas that do not have
land line or cell phone services. Not all satellite phones cover the same areas. Inmarsat's BGAN
service covers most of the world except for the areas near the north and south poles. Iridium satellite
phones also work throughout most of the world. In contrast, Thuraya phones only have satellite
coverage in most of Europe and western Russian, the Middle East, northern and central Africa,
India, China, Japan, and Australia.
