Introduction
My30th birthdaywasthesinglehottestdayintheUKthatyear.Imeanitwashot.I
am inMortehoe,asmallvillageinNorthDevon onthewestcoastofEngland.Iamon
acampsitelateevening,theairiswarm,theskyisclearandwithnoreallight
pollution, thestarsarereallytwinkling.Iamsatinachair,myfaceglowingwiththe
heatfromthedayssunshineandtheglowingembersofthebarbequeuesbesideme.
OneofmybestfriendsJosaidtomeWipethemarshmallowoffyourfaceYou
knowhowmuchfunIwashaving!
Iamencircledbyagroupofapproximately35ofmyclosefriendsfromvarious
chaptersofmylife.
Wearehavingaweekendcamping,loadsofmyfriendshadcelebratedtheir30thin
thepastfewyearsandsoIdecidedtogetawayfrompubsandclubstocelebratemy
30th.Iwanted todosomethingdifferentandheadouttothecoast wehadbeen
surfing,playinggamesonthebeach,eating,drinkingandgenerallyhavingaball.
OneofmyveryclosefriendswasnicknamedBuntyBuntywasacartooncharacter
inTheRoyoftheRoversfootballmagazinewhenwewerekids.Buntywasa
characterthatplayedfootballandwhenhefelloverhebouncedupagain,thatwas
him alright,hebouncedwheneverweplayedfootball andalwaysseemedtolandon
hisfeet.Anyway,hehadhadtodrinkalotofwaterandhaveasitdownwhenwehad
lunchtimedrinksduetotheredcolourofhisback.MoresuncreamforBuntynext
time.Whenhetookhisvestoff,itlookedlikehewasstillwearingitonaccountof
himhavingredskineverywherewherethevesthadnotbeencovering.Inlateryears
wewentonholidaytogetherwithsomeotherclosefriendsandwhenhehadstillnot
learnthislessonandwasredskinnedagain,werenicknamedhim Burnty.
Anyway,Idigress.Ihadstrolledlazilybackfromtheshowersandsomeserious
groomingforthenightahead,well,asseriousasyoucandointhesteamyshower
roomsonacampsiteandIwasheadinginthedirectionofwhereallourtentswere
pitched.IhadaveryoldVolkswagenCampervanthatis6monthsolderthanIamand
Ilovedgoingcampinginher beautifulmachinesthose,minewasracinggreen,
originalinteriorandwasimaginativelynamedBertha onaccountofherbeinga4
berthcampervan.
So,asIwalkedback,theviewsweresomethingspecial.Overlookinggreensloping
hillstothebeachesandthesea.Theimmediatecoastlinehadbigrockstalagmites
comingoutoftheseathatwerecastingsilhouettesacrossthecliffsandthesun was
settingonthesurfaceoftheseastunning.Absolutelystunning.
AsIarrivedback,allchangedandsmellingwonderfulagain,Iwasgreetedwith a
cheerbyallmyfriendsthathadcongregated,tiedballoonstoBerthaandinstructed
metositdownforabirthdaysurprise.Now,ifyouhavefriendslikemine,youstart
gettingnervouswhentheysaythingslikethat.IsatdownandRoy,oneofmyfriends
fromBournemouth,announcedthateveryonehadbeenemailingeachotherbehind

mybackthatweekandtheyhaddecidedthattheywouldallbringsomethingalongto
theeveningthatremindedthemofmeandthattheywouldtellthestorythatwentwith
it.
ItisatthispointthatIamscared,mygirlfriendishereandIamnotsureifsheknows
everythingaboutmejustyetandIamnotsureifIwanthertoknoweverything!
MybestfriendfromuniversityEd,toldeverybodyastoryaboutthetimehimandI
pretendedtobebarownersandconnedourwayintothesetoftheUKsmostpopular
TVsoapopera,CoronationStreet,forafreedrinkspromotionandweregivenfree
drinksforadayandanight.HegavemeaphotoofhimandI,arminarm,intheset
oftheRoversReturnbarfromduringthatday.
Oneofmybestfriendsfrommyhometown, Toby,(wecalledhimSpannerbecausehe
wasintocarsandoncesmackedhimselfintheheadwithaspannerandcameoutto
thepubwithascaronhisforehead)toldastoryaboutthetimehimandIandacouple
ofothershadjumpedintoataxiattheendofanightoutandtoldthedriverwhereto
go, onlytofindouthalfwaythrough thelengthyjourney thathewasnotactuallya
taxidriverandwastooscaredtotellus.
AgreatfriendofmineNick,hadtoldofhowImadealltheguysathisprewedding
stagnightwearleopardskinthongsoutsidetheirtrousersandsohebroughtmeanew
onethatwentcomfortablyovermytrousersandlookedgreatatthecampsite.
My brotherhadmadea30thbirthdaytshirtformewithapictureofmewearinga
wigonitandIhadtowearthetshirtforthenightIactuallyworeitallweekend.
Thenightwentonlikethis,personuponpersontookturnstostandupandtellme
abouthowmuchfuntheyhadhadwithmeandthelaughterfromeveryonemademe
giddyandemotional.
Emotional,becausemymindnowwanderedbacktoseveralyearsearlierinthelate
1980s.Iamlyingonmybedstaringattheceilinganditisblurred.Infact,theartex
ceilingismoving,itissloppingaroundlookingtomelikesomeonestirringpaintina
pot.ThereasonformystrangevisionisthatinthelasthalfhourofthisSeptember
dayin1989,Ihavejustconsumedalotofdrugsandalcohol,andfurtherstuffeddown
mythroat30antidepressanttablets.My stomachisfeelingweirdasyouwould
expect,infactitisgurgling.IamthinkingtomyselfthatIamdying.
IhadnotbecomethesuperstarfootballerthatIwastippedtobe,Ihadnotgotthat
hotshotjobthatmyeducationalexcellencehadanticipatedorbecomeanyofthe
amazingthingsthatallmyschoolteachersthoughtIwould.Infact,inmyeyes,
havingnotmadeanyimpressionontheworldapartfromdoingpoorly,Ihavehad
enoughofbeingnoone,withnovalueofmyself,notlivinguptoexpectationsandam
nowcommittingsuicide.
Theonlythingthatstoppedmefromdying,inmyopinion,wasmyMumfindingme
halfunconsciousandthenhavingtoforcemyselftobedesperatelysickinthehopeof
recovering.

ThisisnotsomethingthatmanypeoplehaveencounteredIamguessing,butletme
tellyouthisfrommyexperience,thedreamyideaofdriftingoffcomfortablyatyour
ownhandisnotaseasyasyoumaythink.Facedwiththereality ofdying,inavery
surrealexperience,Iamnowimaginingmyownfuneralwhenintherealworldmy
Mumhasarrivedhomeandstartscallingmyname.
Imaginingherthereintearsifshediscoveredmelikethis,Istartrememberingstories
ofhowproudmy MumandDadwerewhenIbecamedeputyheadboyatschool.I
rememberedmygrandmothertellingmeaboutthetime,priortomybirth,howmy
DadhadtoldeveryonethathewasgoingtohavearedhairedsonandonthedayIwas
bornhowproudhewas.IremembermyDaddrivingmealloverthecountryand
watchingmeplayfootballeveryweekendinallkindsofweatherconditionsandhow
involvedhewouldbeandhowhewaswithmewhenIplayedwellandscoredgoals.I
rememberhowmybrotherusedtohappilyfollowmearoundwhenweweretoddlers
andhowinadultlifewemadeapacttobethebestmanateachothersweddingswhile
hugging.
But,onmybed,thelightswentoutforme.IthinkIamdying.
Suddenly,Icanhearcrystalclear,sharpsounds.
Thenextfewdayswereablurtome.Iamlookingatacounsellor.Sheisaskingme
allsortsofquestionsandtellingmethingsanddespiteherverypleasantdemeanour
andagreeablesmile,Iamfindingthediscussionmoribund.Ihavenointerestinwhat
sheissayingandverylittleofwhatsheisdoingortellingmeisofanyvaluetome
rightthereandthen.Shejustwantstodiscussmylife,whichItendtothinkis
obviouslyproblematicrightnow.
Ispentsomeweeksrecoveringphysicallyandthensomemonthsrecoveringmentally
andmustadmitthatIstillexperiencetimesnowwhenIfeelthepainofthattimein
mylife.Astheyearstickedbyfromthenonwards,Ihadnevertrulystoppedand
examinedmylife.Mynaturalcopingmechanismwastoburymyheadandnotspend
toomuchmoretimeanalysingmylife,notkeepregurgitatingpastpain.Instead,to
moveforwardIstudiedandstudiedandlearntmoreaboutlotsofwaystofeelgood
aboutmyself.Iwentoncoursesallovertheworldtotrain tohelpothersthathadbeen
neartheendlikeIhad.Ireadbooksonawidevarietyofselfhelptopicstolearnhow
toexcelanddevelopmyselfforthebetter,Ihadsetupmyownbusinessandwas
pushingonforward.Itwasalongjourney,thatIamstillnotevensurethatIhave
reachedtheendof.
ButthereI was,onmy30thbirthday,onthemostbeautifulcampsite,staringatthe
facesofmyfriendsalllookingatmeandlaughingandsmilingandbesidemeisa
growingpileofpictures,toys,cards,itemsthatwouldmeannothingtomostpeople,
thatallhaveaconnectionbetweensomeoneandme.
AsIlookatthosethings,withtheirassociatedmemories,itisgettingcoolerandsome
peoplearegoingtobed,somegoingintothevillagetothepubandIsaidIwouldjoin
themshortly.Ihadneverrealisedtheimpactthatsomeofthemostinnocuousactions
andthingsthatIhaddonehadbeenimprintedonthemindsofothers.Oneofmy
friendsfromhomeJocameovertomeandsaidIamsosorryfornothavingtolda

storyAdam,youknowwhatIm likeIdontlikegettingupinfrontofpeople.You
knowthatweallloveyouanyway dontyouInarealmatteroffactwayasshe
walkedovertohertentandbeganzippingitup.
Idonow Ithoughtwithmychinwobblingallovertheplace.Iwentandsatinmy
campervanforacoupleofminutesandcried.InfactIcriedsohard,thatIhadtostuff
mybeachtowelovermymouthtomufflethesounds.
WhenJosaidthat,itremindedmeofmyMumsayingtomebackthenWedolove
you,youdoknowthatdontyou.Thiswasthebeginningof thedevelopmentof
myselfesteem.IknownowwhyIfailedmiserablyinmyattempttoendthings.To
thisday,IdomybesttotellmyfriendsandfamilythatIlovethemandtellthem of
theimpactthingstheydohaveonme,becauseIknowthatkindofstuffspreadsinto
thelivesofothersandmightjusthelpsomeonedeveloptheirownsenseofself
withouthavingtogothroughsuchtraumatictimes.Irecommendyoudothesame.
ThemainpurposeofmetellingyouthisisthatasIwritethesepagestoday,Iam
authorofabestsellingbookonselfhypnosis,IhavestarredinaprimetimeBBC1
documentaryseriesforTV, mypersonaldevelopmentaudioprogrammesand
hypnosisprogrammessell allovertheworld,Ispeakinternationallyandregularly
appearinmagazinesdiscussingmywork.Ihavealongwaitinglistforpeopleto
consultwithmeandindividualsandcompaniesseekmeouttodoso.Iconsider
myselftohavecomeaverylongway.ThatjourneywouldnothavebeenpossibleifI
hadnotbeenabletohelpmyselftogetincontrolofmybrainandmyexperienceof
lifeandbuildmyownsenseofselfesteem.ThelifeIamleadingtodaywouldhave
beenimpossiblewithoutmefirstdevelopingmysenseofselfandnurturingthe
relationshipIhavewithmyself.

Youshallbegettingveryusedtothosewordsinboldtowards theendofeveryday.I

Projectfortoday:Followthesesteps.
Step1: Writedown aminimumof10specificmemoriesfromyourearlierlifethat
youconsidertohavebeenpivotalinharmingyourselfesteem inanywayatall.
Maybetheyhaveastrongemotional responsetoyouoryourlifeorsomeones
commentsaboutyouthathavecontributedtoyourbeliefs,thoughtsorhabitsabout
youandyourselfesteem.Beasdetailedasyoucan.Theseneedtobememoriesthat
havebeenpivotal,inyouropinion,toyourrecentstateofmindinrelationtoyour
senseofself.
Ensurethatthesethingsarespecificallyrelatedto yoursenseofself.Thismust
includefeelingsaboutthepeopleinvolved,yourexperiences,situations,whatpeople
saidtoyouortoldyou.Theseexperienceswillallhaveemotionalcontentthatis
significantandinsomecasespowerfulandprofound.
Thisprojectfortoday may taketimebutisoneofthemostimportantthingsyouwill
dointhisbook.
Step2: Writeeachmemoryonaseparatepieceofpaperinyourjournal.Ifyouthink
ofmorethanonememoryatatimealwayswriteyourmemoriesdownfirstthenreturn
toeachoneindividuallylater.
Step3: Inasmuchdetailaspossible,writeabouteachmemory.Includehowyoufelt
atthetimeandwhatpeoplesaid. Writedown whatyousaw,whatyouheardand
whatandhowyoufelt.Describeitinasmuchsensorydetailaspossible.
Step4: Asyouwriteaboutthismemorywritedownspecificallyhowyoubelievethis
memoryinfluencedandshapedyourselfesteem andbeliefsaboutyourself inthe
present.Besuretowritedownasmanyotherwaysthatyouthinkthismemory could
haveinfluencedyou.
Step5:Thisisthekeypartofthisproject.Goaheadandassignanewanddifferent
meaningtothismemory.Itneedstobeonethatisproductiveandvaluabletoyour
currentlifeandinbuildingyourselfesteem.Writethisnewmeaningoutingreat
detail.Basically,hereyouarereframingthatmemoryintoitbenefitingyouinsome
way insteadofhinderingyou. Writeouthowyouhavebenefitedfromitbasically
reframetheentirethingsothateverytimeyouthinkofit,ithasanewmeaningthat
benefitsyou.Allowthememorytosomehowallowyoutogrowyourselfesteem.
Forexample,Icouldviewmyownpersonalexperienceofoverdosingasayounger
manassomethingthatwasselfish,harmfultoothers,problematicandcouldallowit
tocontributetolesseningmyselfesteem.InsteadIchoosetoviewitasthecatalyst
thatsparkedmyreinvention anddevelopmentofmyrelationshipwithmyself.Idonot
thinkofitasahappytime,thatwouldbeunrealistic,Ijustchoosetothinkofitasthe

beginningofanewstoryinmylifethatdrivesmeforwardandspursmeontofeel
goodaboutwhoIam.You seehowIhavereframeditintosomethingprogressive?
Therearegoingtobethingsthatyoumaythinkhavenogoodinthemwhatsoever,
andyouhavetobeverycreativeandthinkabouthowitmadeyoustronger,think
aboutwhatyouwouldliketobelieveaboutitandjustdoyourbesttoallowittomove
youforwardinsomeway.
Step6: Runthrough each andeveryoneofthesememoriesandthenewbeneficial
meaningyouhaveassignedtothismemory everydayforthenext21days(atleast).
Thiswillensureitformspartofyourneurologyandbecomesaninherentpartofwho
youare.Ifwrittendownthoroughly,itcanbereadandrereadtogetitembedded.
Theneachtimeyouentercertaincircumstancesorsituations,ifyouchooseto
rememberthingsfrom thepast,allowyourselftobeencouragedbywhatyouhave
learntandhowyouarebeingdrivenbymemoriesinsteadofframingthemas
problemsthataregoingtorepeatandmakeyoufeellackinginselfesteeminsome
way.
Doyoubesttodateyourmemorieswithyourageandmaybetheyearthey took place.
Thesedonothavetobebadorunhappy memories.Youcanwritedownjoyous
onesaswell.Theyjusthavetobethingsthatyoufeelhaveaffectedthewayyou
relatetoyourself.
Onceyouhavewrittenyourmemoriesanddates,takesometimetobesureyouhave
writtenclearlyaboutwhatyouthinkthatmemory or experiencedidtoshapeyour
lifetimeattitudesandbeliefsaboutyourselfandyourselfesteem.Reviewwhatyou
wrotedownaboutwhatamoreproductivebeliefandresponsewouldhavebeento
thatmemory.Makesureyouwritedownamoreproductivebelief,evenifthecurrent
beliefhasbeenusefulinsomewayinyourlife.
Sogoaheadanddothisprojectandpreparefordayone.Thisisthelongestproject
thatyouwillbegiven,pleasespendthetimeitdeservesonit.Finishingthisprojectis
goingtoillustratetoyouhowyougotyourselfesteem towhereitistodayandthen
