Sophs upset over last minute eligibility change

alex Carmona neWs editor A recent decision by the faculty deans to tighten restrictions on faculty soph applications has left a number of would-be sophs noticeably less perky. At around 10 p.m. Monday night, sophs were notified that the faculty deans and the Orientation Planning Committee had passed a new set of regulations preventing any student from becoming a faculty soph who was not, among other restrictions, currently enrolled in a major in that specific faculty. This has disqualified a number of students from the running, some only days before their scheduled interviews. Soph roles are highly coveted positions, and it has been deemed unfair to open up positions to students who no longer belong to the faculty, Nicole DAlessandro, vicepresident student events for the University Students Council, explained. The role of a faculty soph is to connect first-year students with the resources of their faculty, and it was noted that these students should be the best informed about what is going on in their faculty. The biggest problem with this decision, according to Laurence Batmazian, chair of the student events standing committee, was the sheer abruptness with which it was made. This news came as a huge surpriseno one was expecting this, Batmazian said. Prospective assistant head sophs had even sent in their applications, and there are a number of head soph applicants who were, by surprise, immediately disqualified as of last night. Batmazian argued the USC should have done more to engage in a dialogue with students and sophs before passing new regulations on the sophing program. The USCs biggest failure here is that we failed to appropriately communicate this and break this news properly, he said. One of the biggest issues with whats happened is that the reputation of the USC in the eyes of sophs, as a student government that is open to their feedback, [is] transparent and operates with due process, has really been tarnished. Batmazian added he would be pursuing the implementation of an open forum to discuss the matter with students. DAlessandro was apologetic about the timing of the announcement. It took quite some time to compile responses from various faculty deans as well as members of the OPC. We recognize that the application process had already begun for faculty soph teams and apologize to those who may have already submitted their application at this point, she said. That being said, we also feel strongly that this aspect of the selection process must be addressed in order to ensure the best possible experience for both first-year students and the soph community. One side-effect of the new rules is that it also disqualifies Ivey students from acting as sophs in their former faculties. Im really disappointed. Sophing has definitely been my favourite extra-curricular activity during my time at Western, Ruth Cullito, a third-year Ivey student and former faculty soph, said. Its been a huge part of my university experience and the thought of not being able to do that in my final year is a bit disheartening. Cullito also agreed the USC should have let applicants know of the coming changes sooner. I dont think [this was communicated] soon enough, or very effectively, because there was no formal announcement and it was just heard through the grapevine. It would have been nice to have an opportunity to have our voices heard.

Fearnall has Facebook problems

Cheryl Stone neWs Features editor Adam Fearnall has had to play hide and seek on Facebook in the middle of his presidential campaign. The University Students Council presidential candidate had to take down his former Facebook group, Adam Fearnall for USC President, after the page was bombarded by spam. The ads kept getting posted on our wall, and we had to keep deleting them. Our page had been compromised so we decided to take it down and start again, Fearnall explained. Fearnall said the page change also stemmed from concerns about the information that would be posted on the page. He noted supporters could still find him at Western Students for Adam Fearnall. Brianna Peniuk, chief returning coordinator for the USC, explained there had been no complaint from any candidate about the Facebook group, so there would be no investigation. If a complaint were to be filed, we would proceed in the same way as any other campaign violation complaint, and investigate the situation to determine whether there is a violation by a candidate and whether a demerit penalty is appropriate, she explained. Peniuk explained the rules of bylaw 2, the USC bylaw that governs elections, applied to online media as well, so candidates could still receive demerit points for actions online. The group was sitting at 520 likes when it was taken down. Fearnall is not concerned about losing followers. The amount of likes on a page does not define how strong your message is or how much support you have in the community, he said.

>> the candidates talk social media

Chris Janssen, another thirdyear Ivey student and disqualified soph applicant, argued the USC should reconsider these new restrictions, as well as allow for a discourse between students and the administration and the USC. The USC should definitely look over what theyve passed and give us an opportunity to talk about our experience, and how students from every different constituency add value to first-year student experience. Social science dean Brian Timney, the main liason between the faculty deans and OPC, was unable to be reached by press time. Carol Stephenson, the dean of Ivey, has also requested Timney reconsider excluding Ivey students from the faculty soph program.

We are using social media to drive people towards the platform because we want people to make a decision based on the core ideas of our campaign. For us, social media is about getting people talking in person and not just online.
adam Fearnall

What ive been trying to do [with social media] is interact with students.
logan ross

social media has been important for me personally as a candidate because it allows me to easily communicate with students, receive feedback from them, and share their support for the campaign with other students.
Claire mcarthur

We knew from early on social media was going to be vital in this election. after the usC reduced the campaign budgets by half, it was evident that the campaign would be won with interactions in person and online, not with physical campaign signs.

drive safely
While this years mild winter may lull motorists into a false sense of security on the road, recent statistics serve as a caution to keep driving with care. A press release from the London Police Service shows the number of reported collisions in January 2012 is 995, only a slight decrease from the 1,041 reported accidents in January of 2011. The higher than expected number of accidents is due to motorists driving on the winter roads in the same manner as they would during warmer seasons. Although there may be less visible snow, winter driving conditions are still riskier due to reduced traction. Drivers have to think, rather than rely on their skills or equipment. Airbags, seat belts and snow tires may protect drivers, but they wont prevent accidents, Tom OBrien, media officer of the traffic management unit, advised. Drivers must be even more vigilant during winters than any other time of the year. Driving is a mental and physical activity. Mentally, drivers should

reduce distractions by refraining from texting, paying more attention to the road than conversations and decreasing the music volume, OBrien said. Marissa Zhu

New hill for Boler

After more than a month of delays, Boler Mountain celebrated the completion of a project 30 years in the making. The West Hill officially opened to the public this past Saturday. The grand opening included a pancake breakfast, a ribbon cutting ceremony, live music, a torchlight parade and fireworks. More than a thousand people were in attendance. The new hill, which required the relocation of millions of cubic metres of soil, has a rise of 220 feet and features five new ski runs, including two black diamonds. The expansion will increase Boler Mountains capacity by a third. But the new hill will appeal to more than just skiers. Were in the middle of a strategic plan, Marty Thody, a manager at the London Ski Club, said. Were looking at different options of using it in the off season. The London Ski Club, a not-forprofit charitable organization, has been planning the new hill since the 1980s. It is the latest phase in their master plan, which hopes to open the entire Byron property to year-round recreation in the next 15 years. The ski club hosts Western and Fanshawe Wednesdaysa weekly promotion with discounts on lift tickets and equipment rentals for anyone with a valid student card. Ian McLennan

ment of geography at Western, cautioned against climate change complacency. Whether we need to worry about warmer winters in London, I dont know, but climate change is an international problem, she said. To those who posit that there is no need to panic about global warming, Moser said, I think they should look at places like the Arctic where ecosystems are changing dramatically and ice is disappearing. I think for someone to say that you dont need to worry [...] its ridiculous, really. Moser said she expects London to experience more days like this. Id be willing to bet that we will experience, say over the next 20 to 30 years, many more warm winters like this oneitll become more of the norm in the future, she said. Amy Wang

western prof part of anti-cancer study

Dean Betts, a Western professor at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, was part of a multiuniversity research team whose findings may lead to an effective anti-cancer therapy. The study, which began about four years ago, found the maintenance of telomeresthe protective ends of chromosomeshelp human cancer tumours grow. Betts worked primarily with Lea Harrington, a professor at Montreal Universitys Institut de Recherche en Immunologie et en Cancrologie. We just combined expertise that looked at human tumorgenesis, Betts said. For a long time now its been known in the science community, in this area at least, that all cancers rely on the immortality of tumours because they somehow maintain the telomere lengths. This was the first time anyone directly tested if telomere maintenance was required for generating human cancers. The findings were included in a report published online February 2. According to Betts, the findings greatly support the use of an anti-telomerase therapythat you could actually target this enzyme and increase the potency of treatment for a wide range of cancers. usC to investigate last weeks protest

Cheryl Stone neWs Features editor A complaint has been filed with the Clubs Governance Committee over the actions of pro-Palestinian protestors at an Israel on Campus event last week. The University Students Council has fielded many complaints in regard to the protest and is filing the complaint on behalf of IOC. We received some complaints that there may have been improper clubs activity, Andrew Forgione, USC president, said. Were doing a full-blown investigation. Forgione explained the complaints would go to the CGC, who would then look at the validity of the complaints. He noted the complaints fell under many different clubs policies, and would all have to be looked at. The Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights Executive Committee felt the protest did not warrant an investigation. In general, there seems to be some confusion between club actions and individual students right to peaceful self-expression, they wrote in an email. They maintained the club was not involved in planning the protest and noted they will respond to any allegations when they see specific claims. CGC will be meeting very soon to go over the complaints received, just like they do for any other club complaint, and they will decide on the verdict, Forgione explained. He noted a similar process would be followed for any other situation where it appeared a club violated a policy. We really want to make sure both sides are happy with our process. Forgione said clubs involved could face sanctions such as a probationary period or deratification. The committee could also decide to do nothing. He also noted this would likely lead to a revision to clubs policy to allow the USC to investigate incidents like these more effectively. How we feel about any particular policy is not the issue, the SPHR executives explained. Students have the right to interact peacefully and respond to situations that concern them as human beings, regardless of institutional policies.

Victoria marroccoli GaZette staFF PalmPass is a phone application developed by two Western students to make travel simple and efficient. Bryn Jones and Sajjad Haiderali created the app to allow people to access their transit tickets and bus passes from smart phones. Instead of flashing a paper pass and student card at London Transit Commission drivers in London, PalmPass could turn your smart phone into a digital ticket. The software would have a log-in application that would feature student card numbers and pictures. Jones understands not all students have smart phones, but is anticipating trends amongst consumers. We know that the majority of students have cellphones and are making the switch to smart phones, so why not a smart phone bus pass? he asks. With PalmPass, users will not need to show student cards, and their accounts will be transferable in the instance of a change of

phone or service providers. The USC is willing to explore new ideas to benefit students, Nick Vassiliou, manager of InfoSource where bus passes are distributed, said, but explained there are many logistics to work out. InfoSource has met with Jones to learn about the initiative, but specifics, such as cost, are uncertain. All possible kinks would have to be ironed out before this enterprise is considered, said Vassiliou. The application would be useless unless it was more convenient than what students already have. The plan is to launch a 12month development partnership with the LTC and students [starting in] September 2012, students account for 44 per cent of LTC ridership, Jones said. After this trial year, PalmPass hopes to expand outside the student body and into the London community. Jones and Haiderali have been working with BizInc since September 2011, and are confident that in London their app would save students money. They believe that the cost of the bus pass would not

change and they intend to have the application available for free. Denis Mtui, a second-year health sciences student at Western, is more concerned about a bus schedule application than a bus pass application. Obviously it would be convenient, because Im more likely to forget my bus pass than my phone, but Id still rather just know schedule times on the go. Besides, if I didnt already have a BlackBerry, I doubt I would upgrade for this. David Wright, a second-year economics student, preferred a paper pass because he finds even smart phones unreliable. I have the newest Android, but if Im waiting for the bus and it runs out of batteries, then what? David also said he would be more privy to an app as long as he did not have to pay extra for it. [The] idea has generated a lot of buzz in London and surrounding cities. Everyone knows if we dont make this happen, someone else will, Jones said.

Opinions
The Gazette is hosting a University Students Council presidential elections debate today, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Mustang Lounge. In fact, check the time right now. If its between 11 and 1, go to the University Community Centre to watchseriously, drop the paper and run over there! Lets face itthe majority of students are going to pick their favourite candidate based on how catchy their theme song is, or how cute they think the candidate is, if they even bother to vote at all. But if you want to be an informed voter, then these debates are a great way to learn what the candidates know, and what they plan on trying to do with their position. Basically, the candidates are sat down and asked a series of questions. Sometimes the questions are soft, but sometimes theyre faced with hardballs that have the potential to separate someone from the pack. When it comes to debates, ideally the candidates are going to be well-spoken and informed on the issues theyre faced with. Many candidates take the people-pleasing approach of answering tough questions with a vague stream of rhetoric, finishing with an allusion to how great they think students are, and how much they love being at Western. Ideally, however, we want to see them really attack the issues. Someone who knows what theyre talking about should not hold backthey should offer real solutions, identify real problems, and not refrain from calling out other candidates on their lack of knowledge or misguided platform points. This is a contest to determine the leader of what is practically a multimillion-dollar corporation, and candidates must have a legitimate plan for improving the organization theyre competing to take the helm of. There are a lot of thing we dont want to see as well. Buzz words, vague promises for generic improvement, and just avoiding the questions in general makes for a bad debate. Being a strong speaker is nice, but if youre constantly using your orator skills to avoid the issues, the audience is going to notice. Ultimately, this election process is a popularity contest, and everyone knows it. But at the same time, its a contest for a somewhat important position. If people do want a chance to cast their ballot based on more than a video of the candidates slowly walking forward, they should definitely be attending these debates. The Gazette Editorial Board

wrath of mcGrath
Kaitlyn mcGrath oPinions editor The other day I had an epiphany. Monday started out like any other day. I awoke, groggy from my alwaystoo-short slumber, and hoisted my reluctant body out of the soft confines of my precious bed. I then proceeded to walk toward my closet and choose an appropriate outfit for the activities of my upcoming day. On Monday I was feeling fancy, so my black blazer was just beggingfigure of speechto be worn. As I lifted the garment off the hook I noticed toward the bottom the hem had become unstitched, which had unfortunately resulted in the crease to become undone and hang there loose like a piece of old, flappy skin that hangs off an old mans jowls. But the epiphany was not that my once beloved blazer now resembled a saggy face, it was that I am at a loss for how to fix it. Sewingwhich is what is required to mend the hemis not in my repertoire of skills. In fact, in the category of practical skills, I am utterly useless. I could write an essay analyzing how one might go about sewing. I could calculate the monetary savings of sewing my own blazer. Its ironic that I can comprehend the basic ideas of string theoryyet ask me how to stitch a string into it and Im at a complete loss. And that makes me sad. But Im probably not alone in this. In fact, I feel that a large proportion of our generation, and certainly a number of us who decided to venture into the theoretical world of university rather than the practical world of college, lack in the practical skills department. The drastically dissimilar learning curve between our generation and our parents generation is actually a little amusing. Im pretty sure when I ask my mom a ridiculous question about how to boil an egg, she gives me the same disappointed, almost disgusted look that I give her when she asks me how to send an email. But it wasnt so long ago that studentsgirls mostlywere required to take life experience classes like home economics, and shop or woodworking class for boys. In fact, my parents, who are both professionals, both have these practical skills that I speak oftheir daughter, not so much. Now before everyone starts firing me off an irate letter calling me a sexist, or calling me an idiot because I cant boil an eggalthough I might deserve the second onehear me out. Im not saying the old 1920s style of segregating students into gender-specific classes should be reinstated. What I am saying is that there should be a mandatory course offered, probably between the ages of 14 and 18, in our education system where boys and girls alike could learn useful skills like sewing, basic cooking skills and the foundations of building and construction. The main point Id like to stress here is mandatory, because I do realize these courses are still offered at the majority of Ontario high schools. But these types of courses are allocated as open or college level courses, meaning students who intend on applying for university might not have the option of taking them. However, the majority of us dont, and so we venture into our post-secondary pursuits without any idea how to mend a hem, fix a car or be handy in any way, shape or form. Im not sure when Im going to learn these skills, but I can tell that with worrying about studying for midterms, writing essays, finding a job for the summer and trying to somehow figure out my lifes general path, learning how to use a sewing machine is not high on my priority list. And Im angry nobody forced me to learn beforedamn you, feminist movement. Its clear that our society has moved from a do-it-yourself culture to a find-someone-who-can-fix-this culture. Which I suppose is the bright spot in all of thisso long as we all have saggy blazers, the tailoring business will thrive.

the Gazette: where only the punniest survive

To the Editor: Uze your brain. You dont know Jac. Hayesd and Confused. What do all of these have in common? Vowels? Lack of adverbs? No, its that they are all examples of the discrimination forced down our throats every day by the Gazette editorial board. I understand this is shocking to many readers but its truethe opinions expressed on this page are being put forward by someone with an easily punned name. Just look up. This is, perhaps, a novel form of discrimination, but a form of discrimination nonetheless, from Zalt of the Earth (Aaron Zaltman) to Mad Libz (Maddie Leznoff). Indeed, as far back as 2008 we see its nefarious mark, from Awk-Ward (Dave Ward) to Con Artist (Carly Conway), only the puniest are printed. Funny or easily punned names are no guarantor of quality journalism, and yet we let the Gazette editorial board staffed no doubt by only the hilariously namedchoose who gets printed. Discrimination like this is despicable. Where, for example, would Gloria Dickie in a box Dickie be able to express herself if the 2008 masterpiece Dick in a box hadnt come out? Must we let the fickle fingers of fate reduce our readable rhetoric? I say no, leave last names out of the newsroom, and where they belong: after first names. Justin DAngelo

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Out of Frequency BMG Rights Management Youve probably heard of The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, or at least heard their catchy single, The Golden Age, which was featured on a popular Heineken commercial back in 2011. Now the promising Danish pop band has a new record called Out of Frequency, and its only going to stir up more attention for the talented up-and-comers. With obvious stylistic influences from the 80sand no shortage of Motown influence in their musicOut of Frequency is made up of an abundance of dance hooks, perfectly utilized synthesizers and jazzy flair. Heart Attack, Major and Cloak & Dagger are sure to be listener favourites, but slower paced Fantasy Friend Forever and Mafia are where the magic really happens. The only thing that may push new listeners away from The Asteroids Galaxy Tours sound is Mette Lindbergs high-pitch vocals, which admittedly sound more like shrieking than singing on some tracks. However, once you give her interesting sound a chance with a couple thorough listens through, it will likely grow on you and may help the album become even catchier. Jesica Hurst

Brittany dakins Contributor The London art scene is notoriously understated in spite of the new talent always on display at The Arts Project, a quaint non-profit gallery in the citys downtown core. Local artist Rob Cousins tells one of the oldest stories of the creation of the universe in his second solo exhibition titled When in the Height. Through a series of abstract oil paintings on display until February 18, Cousins explores Enma Eli: The Seven Tablets of Creation. In the spacious North Room of The Arts Project, nine awe-inspiring canvases spanning four to 10 feet long are installed across opposite walls. While consistent in colour and design, the paintings differ in orientation and in meaning. Bold geometric cave paintings in deep shades of primary colours make up each piece with varying literary significance. According to The Arts Projects website, Within each shape, colour and texture, you can find hidden meanings that are carefully connected to the story and the language it was written in. Cousins has installed lengthy labels, consistent with the primordial theme, beside each of his pieces to detail the title, story and significance behind his artwork. An impressive display of texture and uniqueness, particular shapes are hollowed out on each of the

canvases and filled with aluminum shards. Not only is this intriguing, but it also shows how multifaceted an artist Cousins is, having experience both as a painter and a theatre set designer. Londoners praised Cousins first solo show at The Arts Project in 2010. There is No Spoon was a fantastic display of his realist artwork. Handmade oak frames with expertly stained colours enclosed each painting. Since then, hes become best known for his eccentricity and abstract use of medium, colour and perspective. When In The Height showcases Cousins artistic development as he experiments with writing, human history and art. The hollowed out shapes, circular blue brush strokes layering the canvases backgrounds and ample empty space create consistency in the series. Two paintings in particular stand out as distinctive from the group. The Stations because of its raised zodiac lettering, something no other piece possesses and To The Fight They Drew On, To The Battle They Drew Nigh because of the use of aluminum meshing in a small portion of the upper right corner. The amount of expertise and research that went into Cousins paintings is undeniable. Since the context is hidden, differentiating the individual paintings in the series becomes somewhat more difficult, however, unless the labels describing the significance and

Bill Ryder-Jones first solo album, If, is a diverse, instrumentallybased album. It is meant to be the soundtrack for Italo Calvinos novel If on a Winters Night a Traveler. The result is an album that is quite a departure from Ryders previous work as the lead guitarist of indie rock band The Coral. If is based around piano and strings, with minimal use of percussion and guitar, and has an undoubtedly cinematic feel. Ryder effectively composes music that evokes images with only minimal use of lyrics. The vocals are almost distant behind the fluid strings provided by the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Each track is distinct, however not so distinct that the album does not flow. The sixth song on the album, Enlace, does derail the flow of the album slightly during an abrupt transition from strings to electric guitar towards the end of the song. The instrumental focus of If makes it an album that can act as pleasant background music. The albums complexity, use of multiple instruments and image-conjuring melodies can be better appreciated when listened to for the sole purpose of listening to music. Aidan Cornhill

The artist unveiled his new collection last week at an event with a live Arabic band, cash bar and appetizers. Its a slippery grey area

Nathan tebokkel GaZette staFF Director: Joe Carnahan Starring: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo The two syllable title of the latest film from Joe Carnahan, director of The A-Team, suggests much about the movie itselfit is sparse, simple and ominous. The small main castarguably only Ottway (Liam Neeson)is supported by scarce dialogue and barely innovative plot, yet manages to transform a seen-before survival story into something intangibly impellent. The story focuses on Ottway, a hired sniper for a major petroleum company who spends his shifts defending workers from the Alaskan wild, most notably wolves. He and a crew are stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after their plane crashesa short page that, once turned, allows the story to unfold. Most of the characters are unsavory, at least to begin with, and for the most part unlikeable. This is with the exception of Ottway, who is a stereotypical Neeson characterrugged, badass and taciturn. The plot is initially typical, though far from yawn-worthythe men must survive a harsh climate and harsher enemies, the timberwolvesand deviates quickly from a banal survival story, weaving in threads of horror and drama to create a well-knit, though hardly intricate, narrative. Were it not for the un-genrelike insertions, the movie would have been boring, other than for a few startling moments, a handful of gruesome scenes, and a handsome spattering of curse-words and violence. The characters often reminisce, and their flashbacks are vivid, swift and anguished. The snapshots of their lives form a collage of memories, a running theme in the movie. A variety of other subtle techniques are also used to

File PHoto

thread together The Greys tapestry, enlacing layers and dimensions into a plot teetering on the edge of unifarious obscurity. Ottways poignant memories, wordless struggle with depression and instant appeal make him the natural focal point, though the storied histories, revealed one stitch at a time, of the other characters make them almost as intriguing. The characterizations deviate from the norm. Many of them grow and respond to circumstances in ways that exhibit their development, when most in a movie like this tend to stagnate and die. The Grey is white-knuckled fun, just deep enough to engage a critical mind, and developed thoroughly to keep everyones attention. The movie will leave you afraid of flying, afraid of wolves, shivering from perceived cold and debating what happened in the final scene.

Sports
Sean truckle Contributor The Mustangs mens basketball team got out to an early lead in Saturdays game against the Brock Badgers and they never looked back. From the opening tip-off, Western controlled the flow of the game with a strong presence under the rim, leading them to an impressive 85-61 victory. Looking to build off an important win earlier in the week against the Guelph Gryphons, the Mustangs started the game with unrivalled intensity. In pregame, Brad [Campbell] told us to just come out with energy and play hard, Charlie Drouin, Mustangs forward, said. Everyone on the bench came out loud, cheering everyone on, and [we] went really hard in the first minute. The Mustangs controlled the ball in the paint and dominated on the boards to help them go on a 12point run to start the game. From that point on Western controlled the pace of the game, surrendering their lead only briefly in the fourth quarter when the game was tied at 57. I think that early lead really gave us a lot of confidence, Brad Campbell, Mustangs head coach, explained. It gave us a bit of a buffer and kind of let us play with the lead for the rest of the game. Mustangs forward Peter Scholtes

My husband can not f*&#@%$& throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. i cant believe they dropped the ball so many times. tom bradys wife Gisele bundchen said after the super bowl on video in response to new york Giants hecklers

mustangs bury Badgers with early flurry

strong first quarter fuels convincing victory over brock
which resulted in some sloppy ball handling by the Mustangs. By the end of the third quarter the Badgers were back in the game, trailing only 57-54. However, the purple and white were able to re-establish themselves in the paint in the fourth quarter, outscoring Brock 28-7 to re-secure the lead and the win. The Badgers were without leading scorer Jameson Tipping and starting forward Mark Gibson, which showed on the scoreboard. Losing both Mark Gibson and Jameson Tipping makes a big difference, but there are no excuses, Rootes said. Theres enough talent on this team that [we] can withstand losing one or two guys. We didnt perform, [and] we didnt deserve to win the game. The Mustangs needed the win to keep their playoff chances alive. Hopefully we can gain some momentum and get a little bit of a late push here and put some wins together to make the playoffs, Campbell said. It was huge, Drouin said in response to the importance of the victory. Were chasing either Guelph or Brock right now. Its just really good momentum going forward. dominated the inside lanes, putting up 21 points and pulling down seven boards. Guard Ryan Barbeau also put up 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds of his own. The final tally showed the Mustangs pulling down 53 rebounds, with Brock grabbing only 36.

Brocks head coach Brad Rootes also noticed how important the inside game was to the outcome of the match. I mean theyre a team thats severely undersized, and that should be an area of advantage or strength for us, and they out rebounded us

by almost 20, Rootes said. The Badgers started the second half with a run of their own, scoring nine unanswered points and putting them back in the game. They turned up the pressure in the third quarter, switching to a full-court press for the first few minutes,

renee tamming GaZette staFF Only four spots and three points separated the seventh place Western Mustangs and the third place Toronto Varsity Blues going into their game on Sunday. However, due to weak penalty kills and offensive plays, the Mustangs gave up two points to the Blues in a 3-1 loss. The Blues started out strong in the first period, netting the first goal of the game on a power play only two minutes in. The Mustangs had a chance to tie it up later in the first, with Madison Turk getting one through the five hole of Blues goalie Krista Funke. Unfortunately, as the puck trickled through and Katie Dillon tried to tap it in, she was blocked by a Toronto defender, and the puck went wide of the net. Funke received the second star of the night, and she definitely deserved it. Stopping 31 out of 32 shots, her performance was what kept the Varsity Blues in the game. She made key saves, controlled the puck and was a huge part of our win, Vicky Sunohara, Varsity Blues coach, said. As Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins put it, She stole the game for Toronto. Late in the second period, Westerns Lindsay Gidomski was called on a blatant tripping penalty, putting the Blues on the power play. This allowed them to score the second goal of the game, causing Western to doubt their special teams. They cost usall year our [penalty kill] has been awesome. First time all year weve given up key goals at bad times, Higgins stated, clearly unimpressed with his team. Torontos Amanda Ricker found her way past Westerns goaltender Olivia Ross after a two-on-one early in the third, putting the Blues up 3-0, causing dismay on the Mustangs bench. It was still in our reach, but we couldnt get anything going [] We really needed to pick it up, Casey Rosen, Mustangs forward, said. Rosen had a great shot at Funke halfway through the third, when she wrapped around the post, firing the puck over Funkes shoulder. The puck ended up hitting the bar at the back and bouncing out of the net. The referees paused the gameplay to discuss whether or not the puck went in, finally declaring it a good goal. I was a little mad. We needed that goal to give us momentum, and it did. It gave us that push, Rosen said, admitting she was worried that the referees would call it off. Sundays goal makes it eight this season for Rosen, with a total of thirteen points. Rosen is a Mustangs rookie, who played for Leaside MAA before this year. Now down 3-1, and on a power play, the Mustangs pulled Ross for an extra two attackers. However, the Varsity Blues were able to kill the penalty along with Westerns chances of victorykeeping the score at 3-1 to end the game. I think we had a strong game. I thought we outplayed them. Everyone picked it up at the end and I think we had a great game and everyone was contributing, but we couldnt finish, Rosen said, proud of her teams surge of energy at the end of the game.
