Discuss the main parts of gas turbine engine, illustrating the different types of

.each part -:Answer :Gas turbine consists of Compressor -1 Combustion chambers -2 Turbine -3

Compressor -1 It used for draw in air and compress it -:Types used Centrifugal compressor 1.1 It has simple design, and high compression ratio per stage, But it difficult to stage and tends to be wider, having a

greater cross-sectional area than a corresponding axial -:Usage Used on small turbojets and turbo-shaft engines

Axial Compressor 1.2 It is easy to stage, more efficient and more commonly used -:Usage Most high performance, high compression turbine engines use multi staged axial compressors

Combustion chamber -2 Where compressed air & fuel are mixed, ignited, and burned
-:Types used

(Can Type for small centrifugal compressor (m) (Rarely used now -1 (Annular for Large, axial compressor (m) (most commonly used -2 Can-annular for obtaining circumferentially uniform fuel to air ratio and -3 outlet temperature 3 T u r b ine The burning gases expand rapidly and rush into the turbine, where they cause the turbine wheels to rotate. The shaft of the turbine is coupled to a generator or machinery to drive it. Turbine blades must be made of special materials that can withstand the heat . :Question 2 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of gas turbine power plant over other power plants and how it can be used in Co-generation -:Answer Advantages over Diesel plants The work developed per kg of air is larger -1 .Less space required -2 Higher mechanical efficiency -3 Considerably larger running speed -4 Lower installation and maintenance cost -5 Advantages over Steam Power Plant Low capital cost -1 It can built relatively quicker and require much less space and water supply -2 Higher thermal efficiency @ full load -3

The site of steam power plant is dictated by the availability of large cooling -4 water whereas an open cycle gas turbine plant can be located the near load centre as no cooling water is required Storage of fuel is much smaller and handling is easy -5 Disadvantages Poor part load efficiency -1 Special metals and alloys are required for different components of the plants -2 Special cooling methods are required for cooling the turbine blades -3 Short life -4 Gas turbine power plant is more suitable for use in Co-generation because of the high temperature of the exhaust gases which can be recovered and used as .a source of heat ( combined cycle )
