Answer to the Question about Tithing

On February 4, 2012, I celebrated my 56th birthday at home quietly with my family. The older I get, there are two things I have noticed about myself. Number one is as my birthday numbers get larger, I am more reluctant to celebrate them. I am sure it has something to do with being on the downhill side of 50. Number two is the older I get the more willing I am to share my political views and religious beliefs. I have been advised being an owner of three businesses in Harrison that sharing my political views and religious beliefs may not be the smartest thing to do. Before you read any further, I want to state that I am a Christian. However, I am not a perfect Christian. I am imperfect as are all Christians, but I am working on it. I believe the Bible is the Word of God. I believe in the mystery of the Trinity; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. I believe I am saved by grace. The answer to the question about tithing below is my opinion and is not infallible, but Gods Word is infallible. This is the time of year churches ask their regular attendees for a commitment of financial support. Our church, LifeSpring Christian Church, is no different. Over the past two Sundays, our site pastor, Jeff Duerler, has asked our regular attendees to indicate their giving intentions for the next year. Churches this time of year are trying to put together their annual budgets. The only way they have of putting budgets together is to know the intentions of regular attendees as it relates to their free will offerings. As a financial planner I am often asked, Should I tithe from my gross income, or should I tithe from my net income? I usually say, Well, that depends. I then ask, Do you want gross blessings, or do you want net blessings? A more appropriate answer would be Proverbs 3:9-10 which says that God has asked for our first fruits, i.e., the first and best of all that we receive. In Malachi 3:10, the Lord says to test Him in this thing (tithing). That means we should tithe from our total (gross) income before taxes. For me it comes down to God said it, and I believe it. Periodend of discussion. Church has always been a part of my life. In my adult life, I have had both the pleasure and the misery of being on Christian organization boards where the finances seem always to be held together with a band-aid! I have always found this to be a huge frustration. I have always felt that if Gods people would just tithe, there is no reason for any Christian organization to be held together with a financial band-aid! I have also experienced that when Christian organizations have financial issues, we were always on bended knees in prayer. On the rare occasion when the finances went from red to black, we kind of fell away from being on bended knees. I dont know, maybe being on a financial band-aid and on bended knees in prayer go hand-in-hand. What I do know is that God gave us His best, his only Son, Jesus Christ. Through Him, we are saved by grace. We should give Him the first and best of all that we receiveas we tithe.
