Stages of DevelopmentContents Page construction Original image: Below is the original image that I take of my cousin and his

two friends in my uncles restaurant (who I said were an underground rapping group called S.O.A in my magazine). I decided that I wanted this image to be the main dominant image on my contents page. So I opened this in Photoshop:

Once it was in Photoshop, I used the polygonal lasso tool to cut out the unwanted restaurant scene background to leave their bodies in the image:

Because the camera quality wasnt that amazing due to the fact I used my blackberry to take the picture during the spur of the moment, I edited the dull image on Photoshop by first increasing the brightness:

Then I changed the Levels to help add some texture and shadows:

I had to darken the shadow around the image so that the areas around the image where I had cutout with the lasso tool wasnt obvious:

Masthead: After I had edited my main image, I worked on importing my masthead to display in the top right hand side of the contents page along with the date:

Contents title: To create my title for the contents page, I inserted the text into Photoshop, this was the original title:

I then edited this plain title in the exact same way that I did for my original magazine masthead- to get this (this time I added a white drop shadow):

But I decided I wanted to make it a bit more exciting and copy the Vibe contents style of jumbling the letters. (I also added the chunks around to add a sort of street, breaking through the glass effect):

Masthead sign used for background: I decided I wanted to implement vibes use of the faded V in the background of their contents and therefore used my Underground sign for this. I opened up my front cover and copied the underground sign across to a blank Photoshop document. I then resized it against a transparent A4 sheet:

Extra image: And the final prep before transferring everything to indesign, was the editing of the image of my friend Kalifa. For this I played around with the brightness and contrast settings along with the editing of the Levels:

Now to insert all the work into the Indesign contents page: Before I inserted any of my Photoshop images, I prepared my page by adding a black-to-dark grey-to-grey gradient for the background (moving vertically from bottom to top). The first thing to insert was the main dominant image of the S.O.A rappers. For this I created a large frame which filled up about half of the page and resized the newly edited image until I felt it was big enough- but to a certain extent. Next step was to insert the background masthead which I added effects to, in order to make it not only stand behind all the images and writing, but also to seem faded in the shadows and not too vibrant. After this, I imported the right hand corner full magazine masthead along with a text box which displayed the date. Then I inserted the contents title which I made sure was BIG and vibrant so that it was clear to anyone that this was the contents page. And finally, before I added in any of the text, I inserted a black rectangle shape and titled it at an angle. I then added a red drop shadow to it along with various other effects such as inner glow etc. Then it was on top of this that I finally inserted the edited image of Kalifa and added effects such as drop shadow and outer glow to make it stand out and look formal and not like a random picture just stuck in the corner:

Finally adding the headings, text and credits: Exactly the same way I edited the masthead and contents title, I inserted the original text/font into Photoshop:

And then edited it with several effects such as: red colour overlay, black stroke, bevel and emboss, drop shadow.. etc to get this:

This was repeated for all the other headings: NEWS4U and Queen Kalifa After this, I inserted all the texts from my draft word document which had all the text already pre-written and placed them around the contents page in different text boxes. Whilst I was doing this, I made sure to make subheadings stand out by changing the colours and making it bold compared to the rest of the writing. Also, page numbers were in a separate colour and made a little bolder. The final text box I made was a credit in the bottom left hand corner to the photographer and the stylist:
