Each Must Contribute

Speech by Haile Selassie I

Haile Selassie I

The University National Service Program has pointed the way. Todays younger generation must maintain their ties with the people who are the bulk and backbone of the nation. The problem of the many must become the problem of the few, for only in this way can the progress we earn be lasting and real and of benefit to all. This very institution of Parliament is itself a striking example of the reshaping and molding of custom and tradition which has at every step marked Ethiopias development over the years. To serve in these Chambers, a man must possess high ability and demonstrated talents. Indeed, you Deputies must, in addition, have persuaded your constituents that you dispose of these qualities in abundance, for you owe your claim to sit in this deliberative assembly to their votes, cast in free and open elections. In the months ahead, much will be asked of you. You will be called upon to consider diverse and complex legislation, proposals prepared by experts after long and painstaking efforts, enactments vital to the life and growth of the nation. Study them carefully and dispassionately; seek emotional involvement but objectively, as representatives of a united nation and people, with the public welfare your constant concern.

Let there be no mistake: in modern Ethiopia, each man must contribute. There is no protection from the demand that a mans worth be assessed by his achievements. Education and learning offer no escape from the obligation of toil. Social position and high birth provide no guarantee of soft hands and a life of ease and comfort. High origins are no passport to high position. To those who contribute willingly, to the best of their abilities, who, in sweat and toil, work for the good of the nation with little thought of self, to them will much be given, even to the governing of the land. Nor should anyone today mistakenly believe that only in the cities can he serve his country. The greater need today is among the people, with those who work the soil, who provide the nourishment and sustenance upon which Ethiopia feeds.

International Politics
Speech by Haile Selassie I
Opening In matters of foreign policy we have been ever guided by three basic principles. First is our deep conviction that, where there is no lack of goodwill, all international disputes can be resolved through negotiations, without recourse to violence. An inevitable corollary of this belief is our firm conviction that all nations, whatever their political persuasions, can live together in peace. Second is our unswerving devotion to the principle of collective security. Third, flowing from the principle of collective security, is the necessity, in these anxious days when the major powers are engaged in a frantic arms race, for all countries which have accepted this principle and assumed a share of the responsibility for ensuring the peace of the world, to become ever stronger militarily. As we have stated time and time again, we are firmly persuaded that the path to guaranteeing the peace of the world lies in supporting the principle of collective security are the United Nations Charter, combined with a progressive reduction of the armaments which are being built up throughout the world. The billions of dollars which are now wasted on this fruitless effort could with great benefit, be diverted into the constructive channels of aid for the economic growth of under-developed countries. Personal Diplomacy International friendship can be strengthened and deepened by the personal exchange of ideas between leaders of nations. What the economically backward countries are looking forward to, however is the application of the money now dumped on destructive armament to the solution of economic problems. The Need for Concerted Action What is called for at this critical time is for the international community to move from mere rejection and condemnation to taking action. The international community has many options, but what has been lacking so far is political will. The world is only now coming to realize what Ethiopia and Africa have long recognized, that peace, independence and prosperity of mankind can be achieved and assured only by the collective and united efforts of free men who are prepared to maintain eternal vigilance and labour unceasingly to protect these most precious of Gods gifts.

Ancients Medical Assistance Fund (AMA)

The Ancients Medical Assistance Fund has been a great success thanks to the generous contributions of collective members. The AMA fund enables InI to respond quickly and efficiently to the medical needs of InI Elders. Many Elders have benefitted from the fund. It is our hope that the Word Sound Power Collectives AMA Fund will continue to be a resource for Rastafari Ancients. InI will itinue to move forward with fundraising for individual projects and Elders. In addition to those works, the AMA fund will be ongoing and InI encourage ones and ones to make a freewill strength to the fund at any time. Transparency is a priority of the Collective and InI will make ones aware when a strength from the AMA fund has been sent forward, what the amount was and who the recepient is. InI will rely on mobilizing fundraising when the fund does not have a positive balance.

Very little consideration should be given to the intellectual position of retired Professor Roy Augier who advised a group of Rastafari attending the 2010 conference at University of the West Indies Mona that they should make Jamaica the home land of Rastafari. This is a devised plan to rehabilitate Rastafari and to commercialize the movement . The Ultimate challenge must be faced And we must now look into ourselves, into the depths of our soul .We must become bigger that we have ever being, more courageous, greater in spirit, greater in outlook. If we now shirk our responsibility, how then will we be able to withstand the onslaught of the turbulence days of Babylon failing economy? Now is the time for Rastafari to be fully productive in all fields of endeavor, now is the time that Rastafari enable themselves to weather the stormy torrents of a misguided world, ruled by false prophets and puppet governments who make their own rules and in turn break them. A constructive plan of action must be formulated for the nation of Rastafari to move forward in the 21st century. The name Haile Selassie must not only rest on the lips but be the rallying call for nation building and self determination. The children of Qadamawi Haile Selassie over land and sea must rise up and fully mobilize themselves as it seems like some of us are too comfortable with our status. One should always bear in mind the ongoing challenges to organize and centralize the movement, to stand up for equal rights and justice, collective security and to speak out for International Morality. InI must withstand the firewall of public scrutiny and allow the divine presence of Qadamawi Haile Selassie to shine in InI presence form this day forth and for Iver more. Guidance and blessings Ras Flako Tafari

Time to rejoice
by Ras Flako Tafari Before you, lies the arduous task of educating your constituents and fellow countrymen and of leading them along the path of spiritual and material progress-Qadamawi Haile Selassie. There is no excuse for Rastafari not to seek knowledge from the utterances of Qadamawi Haile Selassie, and this time of global instability and political unrest, nations are being bombarded by religious dogmas, borderline crossings along with deceptions and crimes against humanity. All these and others Qadamawi Haile Selassie had fully address in previous years. For unto InI a child is born, unto InI a son is given and the government of the world will be on his shoulders, but his name shall be called Wonderful, Mighty Councilor, Prince of Peace and Almighty Jah. The livity of Rastafari is most important, this we have recognized and once we have embarked on this course there will be no turning back. The demand for Reparation, Repatriation and African liberation is still a burning issue, why should we now turn our backs on the work of Hon. Leonard Howell, Athlyi Rogers, Rev. Fitz Gerald Balantine Pettersburgh and the Hon. Marcus Garvey?

Unto us a child is born

Lij Tafari Makonnen

Emperor Haile Selassie I was born on July 23, 1894, as Lij Tafari Makonnen at Enjersa Goro, just outside the city of Harrar. His parents were Ras Makonnen Wolde Michael, the governor of Harrar, and his wife, Woizero Yeshimebet Ali AbaJiffar. Ras Makonnen was the son of Dejazmatch Wolde Michael Wolde Melekot, a noble of Doba in northern Shewa. Ras Makonnens paternal grandfather was Ato Wolde Melekot Yemane Kristos a Tigrean noble from Tembien who had moved to Shewa. Ras Makonnens mother however was Woizero Tenagnework Sahle Selassie, daughter of King Sahle Selassie of Shewa, sister of King Haile Melekot of Shewa, and aunt to Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia. Ras Makonnen was thus the first cousin of Emperor Menelik II and a member of the Solomonic Dynasty. Woizero Yeshimebet his wife was the daughter of Dejazmatch Ali AbaJiffar, an Oromo chieftan of Wollo, and his wife Woizero Welete Giorgis Yimeru, a Gurage and Amhara woman once married to Ras Darge Sahle Selassie (Menelik IIs uncle). Woizero Yeshimebet died before her son was 2 years old. Ras Makonnen had an elder son Yilma whom

he did not aknowledge until later in life (some say after Yilma saved his fathers life during the battle of Adowa). Dejazmatch Yilma Makonnen was Emperor Haile Selassies only sibling, and was the father of four children, sons Kegnazmatch Sehalu Yilma, Kegnazmatch Asfaw Yilma and Dejazmatch Mengesha Yilma, and a daughter Her Imperial Highness Princess Yeshashework Yilma. Ras Makonnen himself had several siblings however. His elder sister Ihite Mariam had a daughter Mazlekia, who was married to Fitawrari Haile Selassie, and was the mother of Ras Imiru Haile Selassie, who was to be the Emperor Haile Selassies life long companion and close confidant. As Ras Makonnen spent a great deal of time traveling on diplomatic business for Emperor Menelik, so he entrusted the care of his son Taffari to Fitawrari Haile Selassie. Therefore, Taffari grew up with Imiru more as brothers rather than cousins. Lij Taffari also was cared for by his maternal grandmother Woizero (later Emahoi after taking vows and becoming a nun) Welete Giorgis, and his maternal aunt Woizero Mammit. The boys were given the traditional education given to the children of Ethiopias aristocracy. They were taught by Orthodox priests, and could recite the psalms in Ge-ez by age six. They were ordained deacons and served as such at Harrars St. Michaels Church. Later, Ras Makonnen approached a French Catholic Capuchin monk residing in Harrar, Father Jaresseau to teach the boys along western lines. The Catholic priest taught them French, geography, world history, philosophy and some Latin as well. Over the next years, Taffari also picked up English, and German, as well as the Ethiopian languages of Amharic, Tigrigna and Oromigna(called Galligna in those days) and became a scholar in Ge-ez. After the death of his wife Woizero Yeshimebet, Ras Makonnen was prevailed upon by Empress Taitu to marry into her family. She arranged for him to marry her niece, Woizero Mentewab, a girl closer to the age of Lij Taffari and Lij Imiru than Ras Makonnen. Brought to Harrar, Woizero Mentewab briefly presided as lady of the household and step-mother to Lij Taffari, however less than a year later, Ras Makonnen sent the girl back to her aunt, the marriage having never been consumated. He believed it was unfair to the girl to marry her to a man of his comparatively advanced years. Empress Taitu took deep offense and never forgave the Ras. Lij Taffari however would hold the woman who was briefly his step-mother in high regard for the rest of her life.

Sister Tibebwa gave us a comprehensive account on all the expenditures relating to the Project, and she also shared ideas on how to involve the international Ras Tafari community in the furtherance of our Elders protection initiatives. In my interviews with many of the Elders, a central theme emerged, which is consistent with the next steps that must be developed and implemented for our communities; that is, more resources needs to be accessed and targeted toward social and community services that addresses not just Elders health, but encompasses the whole person and community. Perhaps it is time to further strengthen our organizations by merging some of our resources under the same umbrella, or creating a collective master plan that will address those challenges of the 21st century, by which most of our community is already challenged.

by Ras Wayne Rose (IDOR) The Word/Sound/Power Collective continues to give physical support and positive impact on the lives and protection of the health for our Shashemene Elders. It must be known that the Iniversal Development of Ras Tafari Inc. (IDOR) and the WSPC has been collaborating for sometime on providing financial and moral strength to our Shashemene Elders. On our recent visit to Ethiopia we were briefed by our Country representative Ras Rueben Kush and Fund Treasurer Sister Tibebwa, on the health and welfare of the participants of IDORs Elders Medical Project. Ras Rueben informed us that to-date all the Elders received their yearly check-ups and were in relatively good or stable health. He further explained that although a few Elders transitioned in 2010, three additional pioneers were added to the roster of participants, and that the Project is well received and respected by the participating Elders and the broader Shashemene community.

The Elders Medical Project is a good first-start that has motivated and mobilized members of our Shashemene and international communities. InI must now embrace the present and future challenges that face our organizations, our morality and our discipline. We must become larger in outlook, more organized in our institutions, and more deliberate in our fundraising and humanitarian efforts. Again, thanks for the focused work of Brother Rueben Kush, Sister Tibebwa, Sister Beverly, Sister Melanie, Sister Paulette Asher, Sister Fayolin Benjamin, Ras Iudah and other past and present Caregivers; all of whom accepted IDORs mandate to work dilligently for the security and dignified care of our Shashemene Elders. Thanks also for the individual and collective efforts of the Brothers and Sisters of the WSPC and the Baltimore and Washington Ras Tafari Communites who works tirelessly (both privately and publicly) in support of our Ras Tafari Elders. May Our Father Emperor Haile Selassie I, enrich us with his blessings! The Lion of Judah has prevailed!

And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee. And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me. And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they and their fathers have transgressed against me, even unto this very day. For they are impudent children and stiff-hearted, I do send thee unto them: and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD. And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forebear, (for they are a rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them, And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions; be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house. And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear; for they are most rebellious. But thou, Son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou rebellious like that

rebellious house; open thy mouth, and eat that I gave thee. And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein; And he spread it before me; and it was written within and without; and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. Words of Iration (2006-2009)

-Blessed love Iloved Ras Tafari. InI global community languishes in pathetic dis-organization and subsequent lack of collective development. This debilitating situation exists only because, InI have consistently refused to do the right things the right way Most essential to InI revolutionized success, is a radical transformation in InI organizational support philosophy. The organizing and administration of InI family affairs needs full time dedicated staffs. It cannot be effectively done by nonfinancial part time volunteers. InI must find sustainable ways means to financially employ InI strategic workers. Do the Right Things the Right Way, 20 October 2006 -InI cannot do any thing for Ras Tafari collective welfare without firstly organizing the Ras Tafari critical mass. It is in organizing the masses of Ras Tafari that will provide an empowered constituency capable of mandating accountable, collective leadership and readily identifiable material and creative resources. Without an organized critical mass constituting a legitimate constituency, to whom are InI answerable? Lets Get Practical, 21 December 2006

www.wordsoundpowercollective.blogspot.com

www.wordsoundpowercollective.org

-The Ras Tafari community needs fresh soldiers on the front line. InI need solid soldiers with vigour, commitment and vision. InI need young soldiers with confidence, resoluteness and integrity. InI must view the trod like a relay race. The baton is passed from one generation to the other. The more systematic the baton is passed the more efficient and competitive will the team be. Time for Greater Involvement of InI Youths, 22 January 2007 -InI need to rethink InI concepts, precepts and priorities. My generation needs to create and implement a mass organizational and educational drive among InI family. InI must take up from where Marcus Garvey and Leonard Howell left off and bring the liberation program to fruition. InI must not be afraid to form and reform...This journey and goal can only be accomplished through constructive collective leadership and organized cooperation. Generation on the Verge of Being Delinquent, 30 April 2007 -Haile Selassie I instructed InI to organise and centralise. Leonard Howell demonstrated the potential of communal organisation. Marcus Garvey showed InI the power and the value of mass organisation. The Rastafari Movement at present is poised to evolve the most permanent centralised mass organisation in the history of I and I peoples struggle. All the necessary ingredients exist to materialise this greatness. They only need to be administratively formalised. Organising and Centralising Rastafari from the Ground Upward: A Practical and Strategic Proposal, 31 May 2007 -Its time for the realization that we can only safeguard our nations from the destructive onslaught of European industrial and financial globalization by integrated global Afro-centric cultural and economic cooperation. Alternative sustainable development in renewable

resources is of urgent necessity. The collective creativity of our people will reveal the know-how. We need only the will. Be confident in yours. Let the Caribbean behold the merits of Ras Tafari centralization. The merits of RasTafari centralization in the Caribbean, 10 November 2007 -Ras Tafari ingels must evolve from the darkness of inherited misconceptions which have served to embitter the relationship between man and woman. Misconception in practice ensures the horrors of oppression, discrimination and unfulfilled social harmony. Ras Tafari is the light of conductual integrity emanating from the conscious practice of the awareness and ippreciation of the natural laws of human oneness, equal rights and justice. By all measures of consciousness and natural reality, man and woman are interdependent. Man and Woman are Interdependent, 15 April 2008 -I speak with experience of the male prisons. I feel confidently that the same is true of the female prisons. Ras Tafari prisoners now called clients are in need of InI support. A letter, a book etc. can go a far way. Some of these brothers and sisters are doing very long time I wont attempt to depress the I with the inhuman and insanitary living condition of prison. I only seek to remind InI that InI brothers and sisters are in prisons, some without ever breaking a law. Experience Enriches, Knowledge Empowers, 09 October 2009 To Ras Iration Is family of love, blood and faith, I say let I and I give thanks for having been blessed with the presence of this special Ras Tafari son. Give Itinual thanks and Ises to the Living I, JAH Ras Tafari. Sister Ijahnya 30 June 2011
