Serum Separation (Clotting Activator)

After blood collection, the sample will normally clot within 20 to 30 minutes. A clotting activator is coated onto plastic barrier beads which, due to their specific density, form a layer between the blood clot and serum sample after centrifugation. The serum sample is suitable for all routine Clinical Chemistry and Serological investigations. For the physical separation of serum from the blood clot after centrifugation, we recommend our Seraplas separators (see page 22).

Serum Separation Gel (Clotting Activator)

After centrifugation, the gel provides an effective barrier between the blood clot and serum. A particular advantage of the S-Monovette Serum-Gel is its suitability for use as a direct sampling container in combination with Clinical Chemistry analysers.

Plasma Separation (Lithium Heparin)

Heparin is the anticoagulant of choice for Clinical Chemistry investigations on plasma. The concentration is within the range 10-30 I.U./ml blood. Heparin is coated onto plastic beads which, due to their specific density, form a barrier between the red cell layer and plasma after centrifugation. Heparinized plasma is suitable for most routine Clinical Chemistry investigations. For the physical separation of plasma from the red cell layer after centrifugation, we recommend our Seraplas separators (see page 22).

Plasma Separation Gel (Lithium Heparin)

After centrifugation, the gel provides an effective barrier between the plasma and the red cell layer. This prevents diffusion from the cells into the plasma during transport, analysis and storage.

Haematology (Potassium EDTA)

EDTA is the anticoagulant of choice for almost all routine haematological investigations. Each S-Monovette contains sufficient potassium EDTA to achieve a concentration of 1.2 - 2 mg EDTA/ml blood after collection. Maximum dilution caused by the liquid anticoagulant is 1%. The effectiveness of EDTA is not impaired by storage-induced drying.

Glucose Determination (Fluoride)

Fluoride salt, as a glycolysis inhibitor, is combined with an anticoagulant as a preparation for the performance of glucose estimations. Each S-Monovette contains sufficient fluoride salt to achieve a final concentration after sampling of 2-3 mg/ml blood.

Each S-Monovette is indicated with the colour code shown above. S-Monovettes with order number ending in .001 have a coloured paper label corresponding to the table.

Coagulation (citrate)
Citrate (0.106 molar solution) is the anticoagulant of choice for all physiological coagulation studies. Provided the recommended volume of blood is drawn, each S-Monovette contains a dilution ratio of 1 in 10 (1 part citrate + 9 parts blood) after collection.

Citrate (0.106 molar solution) is the anticoagulant of choice for Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) determination. Provided the recommended volume of blood is drawn, each S-Monovette contains a dilution ratio of 5 (1 part citrate + 4 parts blood) after collection. For the automatic determination of ESRs, we recommend the Sediplus S 100, S 200 and S 2000 instruments (see pages 10 - 11).
