DEFENSIVE DRIVING The good driver is the one who has the driving skills but also has balance and self-control. As a driver, we need to possess good social attitudes. It is also equally important to have a good driving attitude. Some of the characteristics of a good driver attitude are as follows: 1. ACCEPTANCE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Take responsibility for your own mistakes. Let other drivers know that you are aware of your mistakes and apologize by waving or smiling. 2. BE AWARE: Look ahead, to the sides, and rear of your car. Look for potential hazards on the road. 3. GOOD ATTITUDE: Always have a good attitude toward other drivers and law enforcement. GOOD ATTITUDE IS CONTAGIOUS "Treat other drivers as you would like to be treated." 4. BE ALERT: Be ready for potential hazards. Have a plan to handle any situation. 5. OBSERVATION: Look at the total traffic picture. Keep your eyes moving. Always look over your shoulder for cars in your blind spot. 6. MAKE YOUR CAR VISIBLE: Situate your car where other drivers can see you. Turn your headlights on even during the day. Avoid driving in another vehicle's blind spot. Don't drive on the side or behind big trucks. 7. GIVE THE RIGHT-OF-WAY: The right-of-way is given to you by other drivers, otherwise it does not exist. The right-of-way rule means to drive in such a way to avoid collisions. If there is a conflict as to who has the right-of-way do not insist on your right-of-way. The fastest and safest way to change your lane or get to your destination is to yield. "DO NOT INSIST ON YOUR RIGHT-OF-WAY" If the other driver does not want to give you the right-of-way, you do not have the right-of-way. 8. BE IN GOOD PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CONDITION: Make sure that you have had enough sleep. If you have taken some medication, make sure that it does not effect your driving. If you are angry or mad be very careful, you will have the potential to get into a conflict with other drivers. You are also very prone to make bad decisions. Stress and anger have a negative effect on your decision making process as well as your judgment ability. NEVER DRIVE WHEN YOU ARE TIRED PULL OVER AND GET SOME SLEEP As a driver we need to be aware of our environment. The conditions of the road and the environment are constantly changing. The changes in weather, sunrise, sunset, or traffic, etc. affect conditions on the road. You need to be alert and ready to adjust your driving to these constant changes on the road. You can't drive the same speed at night as you do during the day. Be a defensive driver on the road and have a plan of action for potential hazards. DEALING WITH ROAD RAGE The population of Arizona has grown tremendously over the past 20 years, with the largest number of 'immigrants' coming from California, which is known for having aggressive drivers and road rage incidents. No matter where you are from, or where you live today, road rage and aggressive driving are important to understand, so you can do your best to keep away from situations that might involve an accident or worse. Road rage happens when one driver reacts angrily to another driver. Angry drivers may lash out by deliberately braking suddenly, pulling close to another car, or taking more violent steps such as coercing a driver to pull over to "settle" the dispute. Emotional Fitness You cannot drive well if you are angry, excited, worried or depressed. Anger is the emotion that probably occurs most while driving, especially in heavy traffic. Do not allow your emotions to influence the decisions you must make while driving. Giving your emotions a foothold over your judgment will result in driving errors. Don't ever forget the name "Speed Racer" he's key to finishing this course.

Road Rage and Aggressive Driving You may be cited for aggressive driving if you commit a series of acts during a single, continuous period of driving that presents an immediate hazard to another person or vehicle, exceed the posted speed limit and commit two of the following violations: Failure to obey traffic control signs or signals. Passing another vehicle on the right side. Unsafe lane change.

Following too close. Failure to yield to emergency vehicles. The penalties for aggressive driving are: First offense You will be required to attend a Traffic School course and your license may be suspended for 30 days. Second and subsequent offenses If you commit a second offense within 24 months, you are guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor and your license will be revoked for 12 months. Here are some suggestions for avoiding behaviors which can provoke other drivers: Don't cut off other drivers. When you merge make sure you have enough room and always signal before you merge. Don't drive slowly in the left (fast) lane. Avoid using the fast lane except for the brief time it takes to pass another driver. Driving slowly in the fast lane frustrates other drivers. Don't tailgate. Many drivers get angry when they are followed too closely. Remember to keep the appropriate following distance between you and the car ahead of you. Don't signal gestures to other drivers. Keep your hands on the steering wheel. Making obscene gestures to other drivers may provoke him or her. Use your horn for emergencies only. Even a polite tap of your horn may be enough to provoke another driver. You can protect yourself from becoming involved in a potentially violent incident by following some basic tips: Avoid eye contact with an angry driver. To some people eye contact is the same as a challenge. If someone is determined to act out his or her frustrations even a friendly smile can be misinterpreted. Give an angry driver plenty of space. If you make a driving error even accidentally, it is possible the other driver may try and pick a fight with you. Put as much distance between your vehicle and the other car as you can Speed Racer is the name of the racer you should never forget. Click the button below to continue to Lesson One Part 1 Quiz
