1. Executive Summary
Desalination is the process by which salt and other minerals are removed from saltwater and brackish water in order to produce water suitable for human consumption, as well as water for irrigation and industrial purposes. The world's population is expected to reach nearly 8.26 Billion by 2030, up from about 6.85 Billion in 2010. With increasing global population, demand for for water for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes is also increasing. At the same time, freshwater supplies around the globe are becoming depleted, while over one Billion people are already without clean drinking water and 1.4 Million children under five die within a year due to lack of access to clean water. Those living in coastal communities and arid regions, as well as others experiencing water troubles, are looking to solve their water scarcity issues - desalination is proving itself to be one increasingly viable solution.

The scarcity of fresh water resources are compelling governments and planning agencies to invest in enhancing desalination capacities to meet the soaring water demand. In the past, high costs of desalination (due to mostly intensive energy use) as well as industry-related environmental concerns have held back growth in the desalination market. Now, large desalination plants diverted from less costly and more environmentally begin alternatives. Fresh water is a major priority in sustainable development and it cannot be obtained from streams and aquifers, desalination of seawater or mineralized groundwater is required. Seawater

desalination is rapidly emerging as one of the major new sources of freshwater for the developed and some areas of the developing world. Seawater desalination is established to be a part of meeting a real water need in the most cost effective and least damaging way.

In 2011, Global water desalination industry with over XXXX online plants throughout the globe has shown remarkable growth with a CAGR of around XX% since 2009 to 2011. It is estimated that by 2017 global water desalination industry will surpass USD XXXX Billion and capacity

would reach XXXX Million m/day. The Middle Eastern region is leading water desalination industry with XX% share and is expected to continue to expand its desalination activities. Asian countries have XX% market share in desalination market and it is anticipated to rise in near future because of increasing investments in India and China. Globally, thermal based plants were leading the market till 2002 but membrane based desalination plants has gradually started to capture the market. Thermal has nearly XX% market share and the rest is of membrane based market which is forecasted to account for most of the new desalination plants. In membranes, Reverse Osmosis is leading with XX% market share in global desalination technology market. Global consumption of water is mainly by municipalities which accounts XX% of the total usage. Industrial and power sector use of desalinated water is increasing form past few years and the trend will continue in future as well which accounts for XX% and XX% respectively. Other usage of desalinated water is by Tourism, Military, and irrigation usage. Veolia has emerged as strongest market player in the last decade with over XX Million m/day capacity, which is more than previous market leader Dooshan with XX Million m/day. There are other players like GE, Fisia Italimpianti, and Suez/Degremont among top 5 players with over 2 Million m/day capacity.

In 2012, India holds XXX desalination plants with total capacity of XX Million m/day and generated revenue of USD XX Billion. In 2017, Indian desalination industry is anticipated to reach USD XX Billion and installed capacity is anticipated to reach XX Million m/day. Gujarat has maximum number of desalination plants (XX) contributing XX% of the total installed plants in the country. It is anticipated that Gujarats market share will fall in coming years but will still lead the market with highest market share by 2017. Gujarat is followed by Tamil Nadu with XX plants contributing XX% market share and the largest desalination plant of India Minjur with capacity of XX Million m/day located in Tamil Nadu. In 2011, India has over XX% plants operative on Reverse Osmosis technology 2011. It is anticipated that RO plants would continue

to lead Indian market with at least XXX plants by 2017. Currently, MSF, Electrodialysis and Hybrid have XX operating plants in total and it is expected to increase which would reach up to XX plants in total by 2017. India has the same usage pattern like global, municipalities are leading in capacity usage followed by industries. Municipal plants are less in numbers but high in capacity due to which number of plants for industrial usage is XXX where as plants for municipalitys usage is XX followed by power with XX installed plants. In India, number of plants will nearly get doubled and reach to nearly XXX, industrial plants would be the major contributor with XXX plants mainly because of power, steel, coal and chemical industries by 2017.
