Typical Layout of an Ozone Injection System

Many configurations have been developed and tried and there may be further variations
in the design of a turn-key ozone injection skid but in general the principle is fairly
similar.

Here we will attempt to outline the major components of the system.

Step 1 - The Air Dryer

Using a corona discharge ozone generator and an

oxygen concentrator (oxygen fed ozone generator), the
ozone injection skid typically follows the line process
by which the ambient air is first circulated through the
air dryer (the ambient air must be sufficiently dry and
free of moisture in order to be used as a feed for the
oxygen concentrator).

Step 2 - The Oxygen Concentrator

The Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen

concentrator is commonly used to generate the
high concentration oxygen feed that is
required for the production of the ozone.

To learn more about the pressure swing

adsorption principle and understand how the
PSA concentrator is used to efficiently and
economically purify and concentrate oxygen
from ambient air we invite you to read this
article:

of-the-psa-oxygen-concentrator/

It is recommended to plan for the future and always install a larger oxygen concentrator
unit than the immediate demand of the ozone generator equipment. This will allow you to
accommodate a high oxygen demand if you upgrade your system in the future. It is
therefore always better to plan for a larger oxygen concentrator unit than what the
immediate ozone generator input requirement directs.

Step 3- The Ozone Generator

A corona discharge ozone generator is typically

recommended for higher capacity ozone production since
it can produce more ozone at a higher concentration
compared to UV ozone generators. The corona discharge
ozone generator is also typically smaller and more
compact therefore more practical to use in the design of
an ozone injection skid.

The modular design is highly recommended for the planning and integration of the ozone
generator meaning that multiple smaller capacity ozone generator units are preferred over
a single larger capacity ozone generator unit.

Installing your ozone generators in multiple unit configurations also provides you with
redundancy so if one unit suffers from mechanical failure the others will continue
running thereby ensuring a constant flow of ozone. You can even install sensors, which
can control the output of the ozone generators in case you would like to have an extra
unit on stand-by.

Step 4 – Injecting Your Ozone

There are several difference ways that you can inject ozone
into a liquid solution:

Method 1 - Air Stone Diffuser: An air stone diffuser will

generate larger ozone gas bubbles therefore decreasing the
available contact area of ozone to water. As such an air
diffuser is not recommended in the design of the ozone
injection system.

Method 2 - Venturi Injector:

When pressurized water enters the injector inlet, it is constricted toward the injection
chamber and changes into a high-velocity jet stream. The increase in velocity through the
injection chamber results in a decrease in pressure, thereby enabling an additive material
to be drawn through the suction port and entrained into the water stream. As the jet
stream is diffused toward the injector outlet, its velocity is reduced and it is reconverted
into pressure energy (but at a pressure lower than injector inlet pressure).

Mass Transfer Multiplier Nozzles:

When used in conjunction with the patented Mazzei® Injector, the patented Mass Transfer
Multiplier™ Nozzle dramatically expands your systems contacting ability for dissolving
treatment gases. In addition, the Mass Transfer Multiplier™ Nozzle enhances the
distribution of dissolved gases.

The Result: Multiplication of Mass Transfer of gases into solution and enhanced water
basin contents mixing.

Flash Reactor (aka Static Mixer):

The flash reactor can also be used with a venturi injector as it is capable of diffusing the
ozone gas into much smaller bubbles therefore cumulatively increasing the contact area
of ozone to the water or other liquid medium where ozone is to be injected.

Degas Separator (optional):

A degas separator can also be

added further down the line to
improve the efficiency of the
injection. The GDT™ Degas
Separator, for example, is a
patented centrifugal vortex unit
that separates entrained gases from
liquid (water) based on the density
difference between the gas and
liquid. The water-entrained gas
mixture enters the top of the
separator tangentially, which causes it to spin. The water spins and flows down through
the separator to the bottom where it is discharged. The entrained gasses collect at the
vortex where they pass through a collector and flow out the top of the separator. The
separated gasses exit the separator through a degas relief valve.
