For every rated game of chess that you play, you win or lose rating points based on your rating and your opponent s rating. A chess rating is a sort of weighted average: If you have a high rating and you beat a low-rated player, you win some rating points, but not many; if you are a low-rated player and you beat a higher-rated player, you win many more rating po ints; and if you play a player with a similar rating, your rating won t change muc h. The more games you play, the more accurate a representation of your skills yo ur rating will be. Chess ratings are used by chess federations such as the United States Chess Fede ration (U.S.C.F.) and the Fdration Internationale des checs (F.I.D.E.) to rank the players and assign titles. These federations use complex calculations to determi ne the most accurate rating possible. A Grandmaster rating is approximately 2600 .

The ratings offered by Kasparov Chessmate are not equivalent to the ratings main tained by the chess federations, although they do use the same formula and calcu lations. You cannot earn a rating on Kasparov Chessmate and go to a real chess t ournament and claim that rating as your own. However, you can use this rating as a guideline for estimating your skill as a chess player. Timing -----Each player is has a clock to track the time spent contemplating or making a mov e. When one player s clock is running, the other player s clock is stopped. Players often have a fixed amount of time to either win the game, or complete a set num ber of moves. This is called the time control. Players can also choose allegro timing, which adds a fixed amount of time to the ir clocks after each move. This helps reduce the pressure of time at the end of games. There are four basic time controls in Kasparov Chessmate: * * * * Blitz Rapid Classical No Time Limit

Blitz In Blitz games, you must win the game before your clock runs out, or you lose th e game. There are three Blitz modes: * Game/5 minutes * Game/10 minutes * Game/15 minutes Rapid In Rapid games, you must win the game before your clock runs out, or you lose th e game. Rapid games have longer time limits than Blitz games: * Game/30 minutes * Game/60 minutes * Game/90 minutes Classical In Classical games, you must make the specified number of moves before your cloc

k runs out, or you lose the game. The time controls are: * * * * * 30 30 40 60 60 moves/30 moves/60 moves/60 moves/60 moves/90 minutes minutes minutes minutes minutes

If the game is not finished by the end of the time, but you have made the requir ed number of moves, a second time control is added. The second time control is n ot added if you use allegro timing. No Time Limit In games without time limits, the game takes as long as necessary to win. Games without time limits are not rated. Allegro Timing With allegro timing, a certain amount of time is added to your clock after each move to minimize the pressure of time at the end of a game. In ck In er Blitz and Rapid time controls, allegro timing adds up to 3 seconds to the clo after each move. Classical time controls, allegro timing adds up to 5 seconds to the clock aft each move.

Allegro timing never adds more time than was used to make the move. Rated Game ---------You can choose if you want to rate the game. If you check Rated Game, Kasparov Chessmate enforces the time control strictly, and ends the game if a player misses the time control. If you ask Garry Kasparov for a hint, or if you undo a move, the game is no longer rated. If you don t check Rated Game, Kasparov Chessmate tracks the time control, and adv ises both players if they miss the time control. Players can ask for hints or un do moves without restriction. Hints ----You can set the frequency and clarity of the hints and commentary offered by Gar ry Kasparov during your games.
