MODUL MATHEMATICS FORM 5 Topic : Earth As A Sphere 1.

A(50N, 32E) and B are two points on the surface of the earth such that AB is the diameter of a parallel of latitude. (a) Find the longitude of B (b) AC is the diameter of the earth. On the diagram below, mark the position of B and C. State the position of C.

(c) Calculate the shortest distance from B to the South Pole. (d) An aeroplane took off from A and flew due west along its parallel of latitude with a average speed of 400 knots. The aeroplane took 8 hours to reach point P. Calculate (i) the distance, in nautical miles, between A and P (ii) the longitude of P. 2. P(45 N, 40 E), Q and R are three points on the surface of the earth. PQ is a diameter of the parallel of latitude and R is located 4500 nautical miles due south of P (a) State the longitude of Q (b) Find the latitude of R (c) Calculate the distance between P and Q, measured along the parallel of latitude. (d) An aeroplane flies from Q to P by taking the shortest route. From P, the aeroplane flies due south to R. If its average speed is 600 knots, calculate the total time taken for the flight.

The table below shows the latitudes and longitudes of points A,B, C and D on the surface of the earth. Point A B C D Latitude 32 N X S 32 N 15 S Longitude 154 E 154 E Y E Y E

(a) State the location of P if AP is the diameter of the parallel of latitude. (b) Calculate the value of (i) X if B located 2700 nautical miles due south of A. (ii) Y if C is located 1500 nautical miles due west of A. (c) An aeroplane flies from A to C along the parallel of latitude and then due south to D. If the average speed of the aeroplane is 450 knots, calculate the time taken for the whole journey. 4. The diagram below shows four points on the surface of the earth.

(a) An aeroplane flies from A to C by taking the shortest route. If the total distance travelled is 6600 nautical miles, find the latitude and longitude of C. (b) D is located 1450 nautical miles to the west of C. Find the longitude of D. (c) An aeroplane flies from B to C along the meridian and then from C to D along the parallel of latitude. Calculate (i) the total distance travelled (ii) the duration of the flight if the average speed is 650 knots.

Points A, B, C and D on the surface of the earth. A lies on longitude 65 W. BC is the diameter of the parallel of latitude 30 N. D lies 6000 nautical miles due south of A. (a) Find the position of C. (b) Calculate the shortest distance, in nautical miles, from B to C, measured along the surface of the earth. (c) Find the latitude of D (d) An aeroplane took off from A and flew due west to C along the parallel of latitude with a average speed of 500 knots. Calculate the time, in hours, taken for the flight.
