TVSS Installation Guidelines

Note: This text is extracted from the Liebert installation, operation and maintenance guide of surge suppressors and the original document is shipped along the surge suppressors. The following models are covered in this document: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) LPL series LPM series LM series AccuVar series Interceptor series

Caution: Before commissioning the unit, please verify whether the model is suitable for the circuit that it is intended to protect. Failure to do so shall lead to failure or unit or serious fire hazard. The TVSS units must be located as close as practicable to the protected circuit for best performance. The lead length should be short. Connection: The following information can be used for commissioning the TVSS 1) Service Supplied Building or Structure: The TVSS shall be connected on the load side of the service disconnect over current device. 2) Feeder supplied Building or Structure: The TVSS shall be connected on the load side of the first over current device at the building or structure. 3) Separately Derived System: The TVSS shall be connected on the load side of the first over current device in a separately derived system.

Critical Information
1. The performance and safety of any TVSS is dependent on proper grounding and bonding. All the electrical circuits to the TVSS must include an equipment grounding conductor (EGC) as required by the NEC and local codes. 2. Do not install the earth connection of TVSS to isolated earth pits (Dedicated earth). The use of separate grounding electrode to ground the TVSS defeat its effectiveness, is a potential safety hazard, may cause equipment damage and is also a NEC violation. For proper performance of TVSS, the service entrance grounding electrode system must comply with the NEC by having all available electrodes (Building steel, metal water pipe, driven rods, concrete encased electrodes etc). However for most transient surges, the TVSS diverts the surge current back to its source without involving the ground electrode.

3. The neutral connection (Y connected model) is essential and should be firmly connected to the neutral terminal. Ensure that the neutral is not disconnected from the source side at any point of time when the TVSS is connected. Breaking live source with a 4 pole switch leads to momentary high N-G voltage. Repetitive incidents explained above will damage the TVSS. 4. It is recommended to install a disconnect switch before the TVSS so that, if TVSS becomes faulty during course of time, can be isolated from the electrical system without shutdown. Refer Table 1 for the disconnect ratings.

5. The TVSS are used for INDOOR APPLICATIONS ONLY. 6. The TVSS (Warranty clause) are not designed for the following applications: i. Any nuclear or related applications ii. Life support and patient connected and applied medical and dental applications. 7. The standard color codes of Liebert TVSS given mentioned below. Phase conductors (Normally BLACK wires in LIEBERT TVSS) mentioned as L1, L2 & L3 or A, B & C. This can be connected in any sequence at R, Y & B. Neutral conductor (Normally WHITE wire in LIEBERT TVSS) mentioned as N should be connected at the neutral terminal for the circuit that is protected. Earth conductor (Normally GREEN or GREEN YELLOW STRIPES wire in LIEBERT TVSS) mentioned as G should be connected to the Ground terminal of the circuit that is protected.

8. There are potential free contacts that can be wired for remote monitoring. The color codes for the same are given below. The potential free contact (form C contacts) ratings are 250V 5A max. YELLOW Normally Open mentioned as NO ORANGE Common mentioned as COM BLUE Normally Closed mentioned as NC
