1. State Energy Equation and its Assumption?

OR (8 2 = 16) 2(a). If the velocity distribution of over a plate is given by u = (2/3)y-y2 in which u is the velocity in m/s at a distance y meter above the plate. Determine the shear stress at y = 0 and y = 1.5 m the dynamic viscosity of fluid is 8.63 poises? 2(b). Water is flowing through a pipe having diameter 300 mm and 200 mm at the bottom and upper end respectively. The intensity of pressure at the bottom end is 24.525 N/cm2 and the pressure at the upper end is 9.81 N/ cm2. Determine the difference in datum head if the rate of flow through pipe is 40 lit/sec. 3. A 30 cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches into two pipes of diameter 20 cm and 15 cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 30 cm diameter pipe is 2.5 m/s. Find the discharge in this pipe. Also determine the velocity in 15 cm pipe if the average velocity in 20 cm diameter pipe is 2 m/s ? (16) OR 4(a). An orifice meter with orifice diameter 15 cm is inserted in a pipe of 30 cm diameter. The pressure difference measured by a mercury oil differential manometer on the two sides of the orifice meter gives a reading of 50 cm of mercury. Find the rate of flow of oil of specific gravity 0.9 when the co-efficient of discharge of orifice meter is 0.64? 4 (b). A pitot tube is inserted in a pipe of 300 mm diameter. The static pressure in pipe is 100 mm of mercury (Vacuum). The stagnation pressure at the centre of the pipe, recorded by the pitot-tube is 0.981 N/cm2. 2 (a)Find the diameter of a solid steel shaft to transmit 20Kw at 2000 rpm. The ultimate shear stress for the steel may be taken as 360 Mpa and a factor of safety as 8. If a hollow shaft is to be used in place of the solid shaft, find the inside and outside diameter when the ratio of inside to outside diameter is 0.5? (8) 2 (b)In an axial flow compressor the shaft is subjected is subjected to a maximum torque of 1500103 N-mm and a maximum bending moment of 3000103 N-mm. The shear stress is limited to 50 N/mm2. Assume a factor of safety of 1.5 in bending and shock factor as 2. Design the diameter of the shaft? (8) 3.A bolt is subjected to a direct tensile load of 2500 kgf and a shear load of 1500 kgf. Considering various theories of failures, determine the suitable size of bolt if the yield stress in tension is 2500 kgf/c m2. Factor of safety may be taken as 2.5 and poisons ratio as 0.3 ? (16) OR 4.Taking stress concentration in to account find the maximum stress induced when a tensile load of 20 KN is applied to : (a) a rectangular plate of 80 mm wide and 12 mm thick with a transverse hole of 16 mm diameter. (b) a stepped shaft of diameter 60 mm and 30 mm with a fillet radius of 6 mm ?
