Conservative Financial Solutions

Are your CD rates making you smile?

Did your 5 year CD just go from 4.88% to a renewal rate of 1.60%? This is a rhetorical question. If it hasnt, it will. Why? Several weeks ago, the Federal Reserve (The Fed) made the unprecedented policy of holding interest rates low until 2014. Rates were already low because of uncertainty in the world (European Debt Crisis) causing high net-worth individuals to bring the US 10 Year Bond to new historic lows of below 2%. In fact, rates have been so low that in August, Bank of New York Mellon made headlines as they looked to start charging clients just to hold their money. To put it another way: The US 10 Year Bond has a rate of 2%. There is no way that banks are going to offer you a 4.88% yield (double the US Guarantee) especially over a five year period. Why would they? In March 2011, St. Louis Federal Reserve President,Ty Bullard, was asked if these low interest rates would hurt seniors and savers. He stated, after being asked twice, Im sympathetic, but they are making a decision to [invest in CDs] to not take on risk. Part of the reason The Fed is holding interest rates low isnt a huge conspiracy theory. The Fed wants investors to put money into the stock market. This money would then prop up the stock market which would benefit publicly traded companies. However, the S&P 500 was unchanged for 2011. It started around 1250 and ended around 1250. This means last year, inflation ate away 3% of your networth regardless if you owned CDs or were in mutual funds that tracked the market. (Food for thought: 70% of mutual funds under perform the S&P.) Thats where we come in. We are in the business of helping retirees and pre-retirees plan their future. We manage money, but we also manage risk. Last year, our Conservative Income Portfolio outperformed the market. Furthermore, our Advance and Protect Strategy allowed peace of mind which is much more valuable during these volatile times. If you have a $100,000 CD coming due, dont simply renew without first weighing your options. You worked hard for your money; your money should work just as hard for you. Getting 1.60% a year when inflation is 3% is not acceptable to me, and it shouldnt be acceptable to you. Allow us to show you what a Conservative Financial Solution looks like. In fact, mention this article, and well give you a complimentary consultation. Just call our office at 513-367-1113 to schedule your appointment today.
