took place or what might have been omitted -- some people have noted that at the same time the show played the audio of the inspector saying there was no sign on the gate - they flashed to a
sign saying "No trespressing/no entry -- although the sign was actually on a different gate than where the inspector was - an obvious editing trick to make it look like the inspector was telling a bold face lie), I understand the Department's desire to make sure everything was safe for residents -- especially considering the well publicized trebuchet accident in 2006, which could have killed a man and a child. Could I have the Departments/your permission to share your response on a public forum where people are discussing the incident? People are only hearing the Roloffs side/what the saw on the show. Saturday, December 6, 2008 The Jeremy Roloff National Enquirer article about racist and gay bashing comments and questions
By far, the most inquiries this page receives are concerning the National Enquirer article about Jeremy Roloff being called a bigot for making racist and homophobic comments online. With any story like this, it gets repeated so many times that some of the facts of it get distorted, twisted and changed. This blog has followed the story since the beginning. I saw the website that was up temporarily. I saw those screen captures. I was interested to see how this unfolded.
I want to sort through some of the confusion surrounding the whole controversy and respond to questions and comments and explain why this issue continues to bother some people. Based loosely on some of the comments received, we will do a Question and Answer format in an effort to clear up some misconceptions about Jeremy Roloff's racist and homophobic comments that landed him in the National Enquirer and now often find their way into any discussion about Jeremy.
Q: What is this all about anyway? How did this all come about?
A: Jeremy Roloff used racial and homophobic slurs on the internet social network site Myspace. Over the years people on some Little People Big World chat boards would occasionally notice Jeremy and his friends using gay slurs and mocking pictures. In Aug 2008 a website documented several of Jeremy's comments (included were Jeremy's actual screen captures), which not only contained slurs about AfricanAmericans, Mexicans and gay people, but there were comments between Jeremy and his friends insulting his fans and talk of drinking alcohol. Basically, Jeremy and his friends chatted to each other on a venue that was not private. I think of it like a bunch of friends talking on a cell phone, but really they're on a speaker phone where everybody in the building can hear them. What you hear is going to be the person's honest thoughts and real behavior as opposed to what they say up on a stage or in front of TV cameras. EXHIBIT 3 Page 2 of 9 The National Enquirer ran the article - Jeremy Roloff: A Big Bigot In The Land of the Little People in their September 1st, 2008 issue.
Q: Jeremy said one bad word years and years ago when he was practically a baby, right?
A: No, that is not correct. The comments that were exposed were when Jeremy was 15 to 17. There were probably between 40 - 60 comments from Jeremy and some of his closest friends. It wasn't a one time slip up. It was clear that it was part of their normal vocabulary. Jeremy wasn't a baby. It was during this time - when Jeremy was 15 - 17 that Jeremy was grown-up enough to lecture against the use of the word "midget" because it was hurtful to his family. If Jeremy was old enough to understand that "midget" was wrong and hurtful, he was old enough to understand that the N word and "fa*g*t" was wrong. Q: Who cares?!? All kids say the N word and F*g. Why are people picking on Jeremy James Roloff?!? A: No, all kids don't say the N word and other slurs. But since you brought it up, all kids don't get hailed as a hero of diversity for standing up and lecturing against the use of the word "midget". All kids don't have a chapter in a book about their Big Values telling about how they don't tolerate the use of the word "midget" and claim that when he is with his friends they only have fun in ways that please God. Jeremy and the Roloffs talk the talk...these comments suggest Jeremy is not walking the walk... EXHIBIT 3 Page 3 of 9
Q: Well, whatever, what did Jeremy actually say. I want some examples of what he said that is so bad people keep on harping on it. Fine, he said the N word as a term of endearment, right?
A: Words like that should not be used at all. Jeremy and his friends did use the N word casually in that context several times. However, there was also a comment from Jeremy telling his friend that he asked Mike Detjen if he could take his friends snowboarding. Jeremy said told his friends that Mike said yes he would do it and Jeremy wrote "...pretty sweet just like a N word". This suggests Jeremy was using the word in the slave servant sense of the word. Mike was doing what Jeremy wanted, so he was like a "N word".
Q: So Jeremy didn't say those words to people from those groups (African-Americans, Mexicans, gays)? He said them to his friends, right? What's wrong with that?
A: Using racist and homophobic and ethnic slurs is NOT ok if he only does it around people who won't be bothered by it. I think it's worse, as it acknowledges that the language is not acceptable, yet perpetuates its use among "their kind" - people he believes won't object, which is people who aren't in the groups the language is referring to. Q: Uhhh, so what?!? Black stand-up comics use the N word. Why can't Jeremy?
A: I abhor this logic, but I see that you're using the same logic used by a Matt Roloff's employee (paid or not, I don't know) at his official site. It makes me sick that people argue that people have a "right" to use words that are so ugly and carry such hate and hurt behind them.
However, if you're determined to used that logic, there is a video for you to watch from Little Person stand up comic - Tanya-Lee Davis. She appeared on LPBW a couple of weeks ago when Matt and Amy were in Las Vegas. You'll notice she uses the word "midget".

The Roloffs are quite clear in stating their dislike for the word "midget" and do their best to eliminate it from the vocabulary of average sized people. Their message is not "An LP comedian said it, you should say it too.' They are slurs. They are derogatory, demeaning and hurtful. Don't use them.

Let Jeremy say the N word, "beaner" and "F*gg*t. Get over it! Those words that Jeremy uses can't hurt unless people let them! It's your fault for getting upset at poor Jeremy.
A: Wow. I'll be honest with you. That irks me. It bothers me that Matt Roloff would allow that to be said on his official site by his employee. I assume the reason Matt Roloff condones that statement is because it is defending Jeremy Roloff.
People are over-sensitive towards the use of slur words? Wow. The Roloffs for years have attempted to eliminate people from using the word "midget. I think Matt Roloff's employee should be ripping into the Roloff family for being "too sensitive". Matt Roloff in this article http://ww.portlandtribune.com/features/story.php?story id=22990 demanded an apology from a public figure using the "M word" on a TV talk show. Matt also states the M word is just like the N word.
I certainly hope Matt Roloff's employee wouldn't tell their friend Jen Montzingo that it's her problem that she's hurt and offended when someone demeans a little person by making a joke out of them and using an offensive term. It is things like this that are so disappointing. It makes people think that the Roloffs don't care about acceptance or diversity on a larger scale.
Q: Whatever! What else did Jeremy say?
A: He made a comment referencing Mexico as the place where "beaners" live. If I said Harlem is where the N words live, you would probably think I'm a racist. If I said San Fran is where the F*gs live - you would be in the right to wonder if I'm bigoted.
Q: Whatever, what's another Jeremy comment that upsets people?
Jeremy was telling a friend about a great soccer game he played. He said "Not to be a gay bragging fa*git but I'm completely raped their defense." This comment is very offensive to gay people. How can it not be? I'm left to believe that Jeremy does not have a very lofty opinion of gay people when he uses those words in that context. Jeremy and his friends also had several pictures of themselves in obvious "gay mocking" poses done as a joke to demean.

Q: Gay people and people that like gay people are over-sensitive! It's just a word!
A: Put it this way. If you told the Roloffs that your son and his friends, when they see someone doing something stupid, always say "He's being a dumb midget freak" - I don't think the Roloffs would approve. In fact, I think the Roloffs would think that you must be an ignorant person for raising your son to have that much disrespect for people of difference such as themselves.
Q: Who the heck cares if Jeremy and his friends had a comment about drinking alcohol? Lots of teens talk about stuff like that. Welcome to 2008!
A: That might be true, but it grabs people's interest because Jeremy Roloff is credited in the Roloff family book as stating he does not drink or do drugs like other teens. It goes on to state that Jeremy and his friends only have fun in ways they know please God. That's what catches people's attention when they hear about Jeremy and his friends talk about reminiscing a drunk story or having fun by clearly mocking gay people. I think a lot of the problem people have is with the image the Roloffs present on the TV show and in the media. They say the show depicts the real Roloffs. Some people love the Roloffs for the image they see. Therefore, when they hear about this stuff they're left disappointed and betrayed.
Q: What did Jeremy say about his fans?
A: Jeremy and his friends had several comments insulting his fans. Jeremy told his friend that his dad (Matt Roloff) told him he had to be nice to fans and Jeremy told the friend how he thinks fans are losers that "suck the unsuckable".
Q: I want to see the comments for myself! Where are they?
A: The site that hosted the comments is no longer in existence. It is rumored that the Roloffs were able to use their power to get the site shut down, but that is pure speculation. The original comments have since been hidden by Jeremy and his friends only after they were attracting attention from the media.
Q: Hmmmm......maybe this isn't true at all! It's all lies! What was Jeremy's response?
A: When this story first broke, Jeremy's first and only response was for him and his friends to turn their web pages private and conceal the comments.

Q: I still think it's lies! What are those screen captures people talk about? Q: They could be fake?
A: They're real. Do you honestly believe those are fake, along with the avatars of Jeremy's friends and Jeremy and his friends have not denied it? We are way past the stage of whether it is true or not. It is.
Q: Lalalalalala. I don't hear you!!! Fake! Fake! Lies! Lies! Why are you so sure it's true?
A: The National Enquirer article was released. Not only did the Roloffs not deny the article, but Matt Roloff admitted it is true.
Q: Uh-oh...he did?

Amy and I do not support or tolerate that kind of behavior, and we have worked, and continue to work, to raise our children to have the utmost respect and sensitivity to all issues of diversity and difference. We took the matter very seriously at the time, and reprimanded appropriately. It is unfortunate to revisit this issue, and we look forward to focusing on more positive topics." Matt Roloff
Q: Ok. He apologized. Why isn't that good enough for some people?
A: Actually, Matt didn't apologize in that statement. The word "sorry" is noticeably absent. He claims it is in the past and is basically telling people to shut up about it. An apology would have been 'I would like to apologize to everybody that is hurt and disappointed by my son's offensive and hurtful words'. But I don't think Matt should have been the one apologizing. Jeremy is 18.

Q: Why aren't people accepting Matt's statement?
A: People would like to believe the best about Jeremy, but for that to happen people need to feel that he thinks he's done something wrong. People want him to take responsibility. That statement, in all honestly, makes Jeremy looks like a defenseless child. He's 18, legally a man, as Matt has recently said. Matt is still speaking for him and the topper of that statement about Jeremy taking responsibility....Jeremy's name is not even mentioned! Instead it casts suspicion on the three other Roloff kids. Everyone is going to have their own opinion of the effectiveness of Matt's statement, but one thing it is not is Jeremy taking responsibility for what he has said. His name is not even mentioned...
Q: Why are you so heartless. Why don't you forgive Jeremy and let him live his life without this hanging over his head?
A: To forgive someone, first they must ask for forgiveness. Jeremy has not apologized. There is no indication Jeremy even thinks he did anything wrong and in my opinion, there is no tangible reason to assume Jeremy has stopped using the language.
Q: Why should Jeremy apologize? He doesn't owe anybody anything!
A: He doesn't have to, but it's a character issue. That's what good and moral people do when they do something wrong. People make mistakes. Especially kids. But they need to acknowledge that they did something wrong and genuinely feel sorry about it and vow not to do it again and show that they've learned some lesson. There is no indication that Jeremy has done any of that.
Q: Matt said it was dealt with in the past. Don't you believe him?
A: I'm sorry, but I don't believe it and his statement provokes these kinds of questions: How exactly was it dealt with when its obvious that the problem was not a one time occurrence? If Matt and Amy are as pro-diversity as Matt's statement suggests, then why were Jeremy's ugly racist insults allowed to stay up on the internet long after Matt and Amy supposedly dealt with the problem? If Matt honestly knew about it and was disgusted by the words his son was using, I can't believe that he wouldn't demand those offensive words be removed immediately. That did not happen. They were only removed after it became clear the media was aware of it.

Q: Well, Jeremy's offensive comments stopped didn't they?
A: Jeremy stopped using that venue to communicate, so yes his offensive online comments eventually stopped. The friends he made the comments with, including Jacob Mueller whom is regularly featured on the show, made similar comments to Jeremy's that were captured as recently as a couple of weeks before the Roloffs invited him on their summer vacation 2008.
Jeremy and his friends used this language and behavior for many years. Common sense tells me the only thing that has changed is that Jeremy stopped using it online. His friends still use it. He's still friends with all the same people. Most importantly, Jeremy has not apologized, admitted he was wrong and explained himself.
Q: What do people want from Jeremy now?
A: I think people, including myself, want to believe that Jeremy and the Roloff family are good people. We understand that people mess up, but when they do, people must display good morals and values and own up to those mistakes and accept responsibility. I think people want Jeremy to give them a reason to believe that he's not a racist, gay-bashing, lying hypocrite. As it stands now, Dec 5th, 2008, Jeremy Roloff has not even said he's sorry, he was wrong or informed people that anything has changed other than that he hid the comments because he got caught.
Q. Matt Roloff said he doesn't want people focusing on it! Why are people still discussing it?
Matt Roloff can't control public opinion. This news has broke. Once it is out there, people discuss it. Everyday people are googling "Jeremy Roloff National Enquirer racist gay basher". In fact, any google search from Jeremy Roloff inevitably brings up information about this. Why is it important to people? It's a character issue.
The best analogy I've seen about it was about picturing a famous vegetarian that went on television to tell people about the evils of killing animals and eating meat. If it suddenly comes out that our television vegetarian owns a slaughterhouse and steakhouses...that kind of thing is going to stick in the minds of people every time they think of our TV vegetarian. They're going to think that person is a fraud and anything they say is suspect.

It's the same concept as Jeremy writing and talking about the hurtfulness of the word "midget", being pro-diversity, etc, and then being found to be using slurs towards many groups that aren't like him so casually and frequently.
I think people are more disappointed in the Roloffs for their response to Jeremy's article in the National Enquirer than any thing else. I believe their lack of an appropriate response confirms in a lot of people's minds their worse fears about the comments. Jeremy's silence and unwillingness to express any regret or apology almost speaks louder than the original comments he made. Tuesday, November 2, 2010 The 'Washington County Department of Land Use' Response To Incident Between Building Inspector and Amy Roloff
Local residents called the county, concerned that the large ark-like structure might topple over and injure someone. The picture is of the Ark on display for pumpkin season Oct 2010. One of the most talked about segments in the final season of Little People, Big World, was the confrontation between Amy Roloff and the county building inspector. The majority of people expressed very strong and negative opinions about the conduct of the building inspector. Others were simply confused and wondered about editing and what really might have happened. A few others were unimpressed with how Amy dealt with the situation. After the episode aired, Matt Roloff posted the following message on his Facebook Fan Page on October 27th: Matt Roloff = Thanks everyone for so many messages supporting Amy. Most of you are right. The county did violate our 4th amendment rights of illegal search. The officer was dead wrong. Our legal options are being explored. Thanks again for all the well wishes I have passed them on to pitbull Amy. :)))) That is the Roloffs side of the story and what they portrayed on Little People, Big World (it bears noting that Matt and Amy Roloff are also producers of the show). In the name of fairness, what is the 'Washington County Department of Land Use' stance on the situation? The Washington County Department of Land Use and Transportation were emailed regarding the incident that aired in the Little People, Big World episode titled "Little Noah". They were asked if what viewers saw were the proper procedures of their department and/or if the department of L & T felt what appeared on the edited television program was an accurate depiction of events?

Washington Countys Department of Land Use and Transportation apologizes for the action of our Building Inspector on the Little People, Big World segment aired October 25, 2010. We have also apologized to the Roloff family. Many people are aware that the County and the Roloffs have had numerous interactions related to the land use and building codes enforced by the County. Our highest priority is the safety of our residents. We respond to complaints, particularly regarding potentially unsafe structures. The Department received calls from nearby residents that a large "Ark like" wooden boat was being placed on site. They expressed concerns about it possibly toppling over and hurting someone. It was in this context that the inspector visited the property. He should have been more cautious about entering the property and he should have identified himself to Mrs. Roloff. Appropriate corrective personnel action was taken. The department is providing additional training and taking other steps to ensure that we live up to a high standard of public service. We would like to note that the program is an edited T.V. show, so some of the facts associated with it may have been omitted for entertainment value.

The Capital Press has an article regarding the lawsuit the Roloffs filed against Washington County. It contains some quotes from Matt and a few extra details. Among the details: "The inspector's actions constituted an "unreasonable search and seizure without lawful authority" and violated Roloff's right to due process, according to the complaint. The lawsuit seeks $200,000 in damages for trespass, invasion of privacy, emotional distress and civil rights violations, as well as an injunction barring further unauthorized inspections. "It's an interesting erosion of constitutional rights," said Roloff. "We feel like we've been unfairly targeted for many years." Upon reporting the incident to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the Roloffs were informed that it was county policy to allow inspectors to "surreptitiously go onto private property of its citizens without notice to them," the complaint said. "That response is what put us over the edge to file" a lawsuit, said Roloff. The farm includes several structures -- a frontier town, medieval castle, tree fort and a pirate ship -- that serve to attract visitors during the fall pumpkin season. Roloff's "agritainment" venture has had past problems with state and county governments over zoning issues, but he said inspectors have never entered the farm without permission. "The difference this time is they passed multiple no-trespassing signs and basically snuck onto the property," he said. Roloff is represented by Donald Joe Willis, an attorney who earlier this year won a $1.15 million judgment on behalf of deceased property-rights advocate Dorothy English against Oregon's Multnomah County. We have always tried to be upfront with our readers who have made us the foremost independent source for Roloff news and information online, so we've decided to let you know about a couple of things that have been going on 'behind the scenes'. First, before we start and move onto the issue at hand, the goal here at Spiritswander hasn't changed in the several years that this site has existed. That goal has always been to report the real truth about the Roloffs and the Little People, Big World show as accurately as possible. If someone read just our site, we wanted people to have all the necessary information available on the various subjects so people can form their own opinions. We also wanted serve a niche -- provide an alternative for people interested in the Roloffs to the mainstream coverage that the Roloffs receive. The majority of the mainstream attention the Roloffs get is severely lacking for people who follow them with any kind of interest. Sometimes media outlets barely know the most basic details about the Roloffs and thus, are completely unequipped to question or follow up on anything the Roloffs say. We wanted the Spiritswander reader to be informed of the real issues. We also abhor the dynamic that has always existed around the Roloffs -- that is the snobby insiders that snicker at the outsiders and saying one thing publicly when you know the person saying it doesn't even believe what they are saying themselves. We wanted to make everyone informed of the real story. That has been our goal -- to report the truth about the Roloffs and LPBW. As one of regular readers put it recently - to pull the curtain back and allow people to see the Roloffs for what they are -- whatever that is -- rather than just an image. It's hard for some people to believe in this day and age, but those are our only goals. We don't seek money - we have never made even 10 cents on this site. We are not using this as a springboard to a career. We aren't looking to be famous ourselves or for personal attention. The goal is to report accurate, truthful and interesting information about the Roloffs that people might not have the opportunity to hear elsewhere. So with that said, it's time to move onto the issue.

It began with our article about Chris Cardamone -- the former Producer of LPBW and very close and personal Roloff family friend. We highlighted his public discussion with various people that was held on a fake "Jacob Roloff" Facebook page -- the comments from Chris came from the Facebook account that is widely known to belong to the real Chris Cardamone. http://spiritswander.blogspot.com/2011/11/interesting-discussion-with-little.html Now this is where the story picks up. After that article, we began receiving anonymous comments submitted as comments to the Spiritswander blog. The comments are from a person claiming to be Chris Cardamone, challenging us to call a phone number and daring us to post his phone number publicly so any fan or follower of the Roloffs can call him up and chat. As we said in the disclaimer at the top -- one should only assume that this isn't the real Chris Cardamone -- as anyone can submit a comment and claim to be so and so. It also should be noted that we have in the past received very hostile and nasty anonymous comments directed towards us. Several months ago - we did receive an anonymous message which simply said "you're going to die!" -- we could take it very seriously as Matt has stated the Roloffs do - Matt has said he gets the police and the FBI involved when things like this are said about the Roloff family -- however, with regards to these types of comments directed towards us - we tend to usually dismiss them as tough talking pranks that are ultimately harmless but we may have to reassess that approach. Any reasonable person can understand why we would not call random phone numbers and why we wouldn't post the phone number publicly -- but in case that needs clarification - here it is -- obviously that is invading the privacy of the individual whom the number belongs and it would be encouraging harassment of a potentially innocent party. The request is so absurd, that we can only assume that it is only some bored kid, some pro-Roloff fan that wants to prank our site by claiming to be the producer. So with no further delay, here are the comments we received. It's important to note, that we received these anonymously as blog comments and not direct emails. It's unfortunate, but the Roloffs and their friends are entitled to have their opinions of our site. However, knowing how they feel -- we see no reason to harass them with messages or emails. They don't like us. Matt considers us 'hateful'. Matt has made it known that is his opinion. Thus we aren't going to email or message them since they've made their feelings known. If someone makes it known that they don't like you -- and you have extended an invitation to them -- yet they ignore that invitation -- if you begin calling, emailing, messaging, etc, said party, you could be considered to be harassing them. We have no intention of doing that. Again, if any of the people mentioned genuinely want to have a productive and civil interview - they are welcome to initiate that process via our spiritswander@gmail.com email. So we are to assume that this is just a prank from someone who is impersonating Mr. Cardamone. Again, we are proceeding as this is just a prank -- because it is too ridiculous to believe that a legitimate television producer would post his phone number (or dare us to post this phone number) so anyone in the world can call him up and chat about his close personal friends and subjects that he cannot discuss because of Non Disclosure agreements. First, for the record, we have never asked Chris Cardamone for an interview for a few different reasons. We have made invitations to several Roloffs - Matt, Amy (whom we had agreed to an interview through her representatives and then Amy broke their promises and backed out), Jeremy, Zach and Jacob Mueller. I personally think that people tire of hearing friends speak for the Roloffs -- ie. explain/defend what Jeremy feels about this and that issue and why Jeremy did this or that -- instead of Jeremy speaking for himself. Second, it is also understood, as Chris mentioned in the Facebook discussion -- he is bound by non disclosure agreements and would be severely limited. We don't have unrealistic expectations regarding what producers and crew members would be allowed to say about their show. We feel a certain responsibility to our readers. A Spiritswander interview is not a fluff interview. It's not an interview orchestrated by the subject to serve a public image. It would need to be a wide ranging interview and where all topics are fair game to be asked and discussed -- much like in our interview with Dan Meichtry years ago. So if Chris Cardamone is unable or unwilling to fulfill that in our interview, there probably isn't much point in pursuing the matter. However, having said that -- one thing that we have always tried to do and is important to us is to be fair to the people that are discussed on our site. That is why the moment Jeremy was drawing so much attention on our site in comments -- we extended the chance for Jeremy to have his say whenever he wanted. He obviously never took us up on that. The same goes for the rest of the Roloffs and Mueller. Years ago, Jeremy and Zach's close friend on the show, Dan Meichtry -- fans who had seen Dan make Myspace insults toward fans and had seen some of his comments that were associated with Jeremy's comments that appeared in the "Big Bigot In the Land of The Little People" artricle - would refer to Dan as Jeremy's mean-spirited and bigoted friend. Because he was being discussed, we reached out to him and allowed him the opportunity to have his say by asking about all the issues people discuss. That's all we can do -- ask the questions and it is up to the person themselves how they answer. In Dan's case, I think the overwhelming response was that he impressed a lot of people with his maturity and his level of personal accountability he took as well as his honesty. Our point is that Chris Cardamone was discussed on Spiritswander -- through the Facebook item -- and yes, I do feel that if Chris wants to respond to what is being said about him, he should have that chance. Although again, all we have done-- if Chris truly feels we were "assassinating" his character -- was draw attention to the public Facebook discussion from the account known to belong to Chris -- he was not restricted in what he wanted to say there. And also keeping our readers in mind -- if he was willing to be open -- it does have the potential to be an interesting read for Roloff fans. If you're not familiar with Chris Cardamone, he has been one of the key and crucial producers for Little People, Big World in the last several years. There are many, many people with producing credits on LPBW, but Chris was one who was on the scene with the Roloffs. Chris is a very, very close personal friend of the Roloffs. According to what friends have told us -- Chris interacts with the Roloffs - either in person, on the phone or online with members of the Roloff family almost every day. To give you an idea - some have even described Chris as sort of "the new Mike Detjen" to Jacob and Jeremy Roloff (minus the focus on soccer)- but that kind of mentor figure. Chris is obviously a person who has come to genuinely care about Roloff family.

So if, by the off chance, that these messages were actually Chris Cardamone and represent his sentiments - Chris is welcome to email at spiritswander@gmail.com through a verifiable email -- perhaps his HumanNotHollywood (his production company) email and we could pursue an interview and whether there is anything to discuss. A series of pictures depicting Jeremy Roloff and his best friend and pretty much a Little People, Big World regular - Jacob Mueller, are making the rounds on the internet. The pictures show them tossing the black and white Roloff cat (Mo) high in the air towards the ceiling, snapping pictures of the feline they sent airborne. After some people notified us of these pictures, one of the reasons why we wanted to discuss them was that it is an example of something that has come up time and time again. The Roloffs present a certain image to the public. Trusting fans believe that image. If someone has knowledge that the Roloffs real life actions contradict that image, the Roloff faction deems them either to be lying or "haters". And one of the main criticisms of the Roloff family from detractors is that the Roloffs real life actions differ tremendously from the image they portray to the public for business purposes. With regards to this subject, Matt has posted a cutesy picture of Jeremy Roloff "rescuing" another Roloff cat from a tree. In one of Matt's You Tube videos, he spoke about how they are extremely careful when putting the calico cat on the ground because the cat has poor vision so they must be very, very gentle. Those comments/picture are met by applause and praise from animal lovers everywhere. "Oh, Jeremy is so sweet for helping that poor cat. God bless him!" "Matt, I love cats too. Thank you guys so much for being so compassionate towards that poor creature'...and comments such as those. Yet in actuality, evening entertainment for the Roloff kids and their beloved best friends apparently consists of cat tossing and joyfully snapping pictures of the cat's ordeal. I think it's fair to say that most of those ('Jeremy is so sweet and gentle with the cat') comments from the animal lovers would be retracted if people knew that this is an example of what Jeremy

and his friends do for fun. I don't always interject personal opinion on the items on this site, but I will in this case. Have to be honest. I don't think cat tossing is cool at all. I think it's pretty distasteful for buff 20 years olds (some say Mueller is 6'4", some say he is 6'6") or anyone for that matter.... to be throwing a 10 - 12 pound cat towards the ceiling while snapping pictures of it for their enjoyment. I don't think it's funny or cute. My opinion is that it's pretty mean and cruel. Seriously, are Jeremy and Mueller 11 years old (no, they are 20)? This strikes me as something that badly behaved 11 year old boys with anger problems do to feel in control. Are we supposed to applaud Matt for successfully duping some fans? Matt is able to get animal lovers to adorn them with praise for being sweet and gentle, when really the Roloff cat is being thrown towards the ceiling for the amusement of the Roloff "boys" and their friends. Are we supposed to say "Congratulations Matt. You're so sly and clever"? Are we supposed to applaud Jeremy and Mueller for finding more ways to make memories together and praise them with "Great cat toss, Mueller! Great positioning, Jer! You look like a pro!"? A weekend accident involving a medieval weapon of war redesigned to toss pumpkins is bringing more attention to the Roloff family of Helvetia. It's also brought more criticism from neighbors who are tired of gridlocked traffic and constant attention in the pastoral Washington County community since the family began appearing in the TLC show "Little People, Big World." Jacob Roloff, 9, and Michael Detjen, 58, were injured Saturday when a 25-foot-high wooden trebuchet at Roloff Farms fired prematurely. The machine's 2,000-pound concrete counterweight dented Jacob's skull, requiring surgery, and repeatedly slammed into Detjen, a retired Beaverton engineer who needed 200-plus stitches.
Both were released Monday from Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center in Portland. "Mike, who helped us build the trebuchet, is already thinking about how to make the machine safer," said Matt Roloff, Jacob's father and the farm's owner. "This was a fluke thing that we want to make sure never happens again." Neighbors remain skeptical of any promise of safety. Brad Avrit says he has complained several times to Washington County authorities about the Roloff's "amusement park." "It's not a safe place to be," said Avrit, who lives 500 feet from the family's farm. "Everything is home-built. When I heard the sirens Saturday, I knew it was something at the Roloffs." "Little People, Big World" showcases Matt and Amy Roloff and their 16-year-old son, Zach, who are little people, and their other three children -- including Jacob -- who are average size. More than 30,000 people showed up this fall to buy pumpkins from Roloff Farms on Northwest Grossen Drive near Helvetia Road. They toured the family's western town, three-story treehouse and pirate ship.
Cars clogged the area's two-lane country roads, requiring traffic help from the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Saturday's trebuchet accident occurred just after the family sold the last of 200,000 pounds of pumpkins and

shut the pumpkin patch for the season. The Roloffs built the medieval device in the spring, an undertaking featured on "Little People, Big World." Jacob had cocked and fired the powerful trebuchet under adult supervision before, Roloff says. "We're not sure what went wrong Saturday," said Roloff, a 45-year-old software salesman. He added that condolence e-mails have been pouring in since the accident, with handfuls showing up every minute.
Machine misfires Trebuchets, ancient siege weapons, have become popular in recent years as pumpkin heavers, especially at farms such as the Roloffs' that combine agriculture and entertainment. Competitions pit the mighty machines against catapults and pumpkin cannons, which can blast a gourd up to a mile. The Roloff's trebuchet has a long arm that holds an ammunition-filled sling and a weighted short arm. The long arm is winched into place and cocked before the sling is loaded. When a pin is pulled, the weighted short arm comes down, the long arm goes up and the ammunition flies. "Jacob was cocking the trebuchet," Matt Roloff said, "and Mike was putting a pumpkin in the sling, when the machine fired." That's when the concrete counterweight released, striking Jacob and Detjen. Mike Cropp, owner of Lakeview Farms in North Plains, says a person must do "everything right" to operate a trebuchet safely. I haven't had any problems in the past," said Cropp, who has held "punkin chunkin" events. "But we wouldn't let the public anywhere near these machines when they were going off."
"Local celebrities"
The accident follows on the heels of a busy season at Roloff Farms. Washington County deputies shut the farm for a short time on a recent Saturday because of massive traffic congestion. Thousands of visitors showed up at the farm, which has parking for only a few hundred cars. "It was crazy," said Roloff, who called 9-1-1 for help. Allison Kerner, who returned to the pumpkin patch after being turned away, says she is a big fan of the show. "The Roloffs are local celebrities," the Aloha woman said. That fact delights and scares the Roloffs. "People wander up to our house thinking they know everything about me," Amy Roloff said. "I have to keep it all in perspective. I'm still a mom, with sports, schools and a part-time job to take up my time." Matt Roloff also tries to keep family life normal. But the show's success has prompted him to install new security gates. Recently, he says, a New Jersey woman checked into a local hotel and spent a week trying to meet the family.

Normally, Roloff Farms reopens in summer to sell peaches, but Matt Roloff says that may not happen. "There's no way the peach orchard can sustain the types of crowds we had with the pumpkin patch," he said. "In fact, we may have to stop selling pumpkins to maintain our privacy. "Right now, though, we're just wrapping our family around us."

Roloff neighbors are unjustified in their complaints. Matt and Amy have permits for every structure. They follow or adhere to all rules. What makes them different from any other Oregon farm offering mutual attractions?? For example, just 20 miles (or less) away is a very popular Sauvie Island farm that charges $10+ to go thru a corn maze. They draw thousands and thousands of people. Why are they not criticized? They sell food items, produce, hay rides, etc. Is the difference just because they reside in a different county??? Come on! Matt and Amy have found an awesome way to provide a future for themselves and their family. They open their property, farm, ideas, amusements and privacy to thousands of people who LOVE it!!! You should see the smiles on childrens and parents faces visiting this place!! Why would anyone want to shut down, discourage, distract or detour families who love to see the things that Matt and Amy built out of love for their children?! C'mon Hillsboro neighbors. Lighten up and embrace what they do for their kids and for others. Whatever they might gain financially is NOTHING compared to the joy they provide to the masses in Washington County, Oregon and beyond. I just keep trying to picture all of this madness in my head..the crowds!..the traffic!...Has to be overwhelming for the family as well as the neighbors and community..but..it won't last forever..so..neighbors (I'm sure not all)..please lighten up...Heck..there are people in the cities with crack houses next door..gunbattles on their streets...and drug deals on corner streets..for Gods sake..appreciate where you live and enjoy the wholesome atmosphere that your local celebrities have brought to your town....SHEESH! ....Quick recovery for Jacob and Mike in this unfortuate accident
