Heat and Mass Transfer

Final Exam - Jan 2010

SECTION A Please answer all parts of the question in this section

Question (1) a. What is the difference between reflectivity and transmissivity? [4 marks] b. Draw a shell and tube heat exchanger with 1-shell pass and 6-tube passes. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using 6 tube passes instead of just 2 of the same diameter? [5 marks] c. Consider two identical 4 kg pieces of roast beef. The first piece is baked as a whole, while the second is baked after being cut into two equal pieces in the same oven. Will there be any difference between the cooking times of the whole and cut roasts? Explain your answer? [5 marks] d. Consider a window glass consisting of two 4 mm thick glass sheets pressed tightly against each other. Compare the heat transfer rate through this window with another one consisting of a single 8 mm thick glass sheet under identical conditions. [5 marks] e. Can the outlet temperature of the cold fluid in a parallel flow heat exchanger be higher than the outlet temperature of the hot fluid? How about in a counter flow heat exchanger? Explain. [5 marks] f. Consider a round potato being baked in an oven. Would you model the heat transfer to the potato as one-, two-, or three-dimensional? Would the heat transfer be steady or transient? [5 marks] g. A tube in which hot air is flowing under forced convection is to be cooled by atmospheric air. Fins are to be added in order to enhance heat transfer. Would you recommend attaching the fins inside or outside the tubes? Why? [5 marks]

SECTION B Please attempt THREE questions only from this section All required tables are provided
Question (2) A wall is constructed of one layer of common brick (k=0.72 W/m.oC) of thickness 20 cm, one inside layer of light weight plaster (k=0.36 W/m.oC) of thickness 1 cm, and one outside layer of cement based covering (k=1.4 W/m.oC) of thickness 2 cm. The inner surface of the wall is maintained at 23 oC while the outer surface is exposed to outdoors at 8 oC with a combined convection and radiation heat transfer coefficient of 17 W/m2.oC. Determine the rate of heat transfer through the wall and temperature drops across the plaster and brick if the wall is 6 m wide and 2.8 m high. [22 marks] Question (3) Hot exhaust gases leaving a stationary diesel engine at 450C enter a l5 cm diameter pipe at an average velocity of 3.6 m/s. The surface temperature of the pipe is 180C. Determine the pipe length if the exhaust gases are to leave the pipe at 250C. You may use properties of air and assume fully developed turbulent flow. Also, you may assume that the reference temperature is 350 oC. [22 marks]

Question (4) An average person generates heat at a rate of 84 W while resting, figure Q4. Assuming one quarter of this heat is lost from the head by convection, determine the average surface temperature of the head when it is not covered and is subjected to winds at 10C and 35 km/h. The head can be approximated as a 30 cm diameter sphere. You may use the value of dynamic viscosity at surface temperature as s 1.802105 kg/m.s Air [22 marks] Head
V = 35 km/h T = 10C
D = 0.3 m

Q = 21 W

Figure Q4 Question (5) Steam in the condenser of a steam power plant is to be condensed at a temperature of 50C with cooling water (Cp =4180 J/kg C) from a nearby lake, which enters the tubes of the condenser at 18C and leaves at 27C. The surface area of the tubes is 58 m2, and the overall heat transfer coefficient is 2400 W/m2 C. Determine the mass flow rate of the cooling water needed. [22 marks]
