The Republican race to determine who will square off against Barack Obama just got tighter after Rick Santorum unexpectedly went 3-for-3 pulling off upset wins over frontrunner Mitt Romney in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado. In the previous two contests in Florida and Nevada, Romney had crushed his opponents prompting election pundits to prematurely declare that he would cruise the rest of the way to the Republican nomination largely uncontested. Voters in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado had other ideas however. Santorums surprise sweep has now made this contest a heated match. While trailing Romney in the total delegate count, he is now firmly in second place while former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Senator Ron Paul remain a distant third and fourth respectively. Santorum, who paints himself as a true conservative compared to Romney, has staked his campaign on being the only viable alternative to Barack Obama. With nearly all voter precincts reporting, Santorum earned 40% of the votes in Colorado, compared to 35% for Romney. In Missouri, the contest was not even close: Santorum garnered 55% of the votes compared to just 25% for Romney. In Minnesota, Santorum raked up 45% of all votes, Ron Paul came in a surprising second at 27% while Romney placed third with 17%. While Mitt Romney still leads the delegate count 107 to Santorums 45, his unexpected sweep of three states has thrown the GOP contest into disarray as conservative voters who cast their ballots for Santorum are squaring off against the more moderate electorate of the Republican party. Romney has faired better among the latter, while getting hammered by conservatives. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich remains in third place with 32 delegates, while US Senator Ron Paul has just 8.

1,144 delegates are needed to clinch the Republican party nomination. The next election primary contests will be held in Maine and Arizona. Romney is projected to win these, but Santorum for now has the momentum. 1.0v1 February 9, 2012 Kal K.
