INTRODUCTION:
Thank you for purchasing FS2CREW: PMDG 747 VOICE COMMANDER EDITION. This is a complex product that adds voice control to the PMDG 747 for FSX and FS9. This edition uses the latest Voice Control technology. It also features the latest FS2Crew techniques designed to lower the learning curve while at the same time bolstering the feeling of realism. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) modeled in this version are based on the same SOPs used at a real-world airline operating in the Oceania region. While the PMDG 747 is a sophisticated aircraft, it is also very automated and, as a result, its fairly easy to fly. A user who follows the tutorial flight carefully should be able to master the program within in a few flights.

TROUBLESHOOTING:
Important: When loading Flight Simulator for the first time with FS2Crew PMDG 747 Edition installed, be sure to run Flight Simulator in Windowed mode. This enables the Audio Engine to display any error messages should you encounter problems which otherwise would not be displayed under Full Screen Mode. Please report any error messages to the FS2Crew Forum or email FS2Crew Support. Most issues can be solved by installing (or re-installing) the latest version of DirectX which ensures your audio and video drivers are up-to-date. Also be sure to send FS2Crew Support a copy of your Black Box and Cockpit Voice Recorder to assist us in troubleshooting. Both files are available by accessing the following directories:C:\Users\<---USER NAME--->\AppData\Roaming \FS2Crew2010\Versions\PMDG747\ Note that AppData is a hidden folder, so you wont be able to see it initially. Just type\AppData\ after your user name in your Address Bar. If using XP, look for the same folder in Documents and Settings -> User.

FAQS:
Situation: After loading the 747 (in windowed mode), I get an error message related to a missing DLL. Solution: Run the FS2Crew installer again. Do NOT click CANCEL. Wait for the installer to finish even though it may take a long time.

Situation: My frame rates dropped significantly after loading the 747. Solution: Ensure Language in the Windows Speech Recognition tab is set to English US.

Situation: The VOICE button on the Main Panel does not stay on. Solution: Ensure Language in the Windows Speech Recognition tab is set to English US (not English UK). If using XP, ensure the SAPI speech engine is installed.

Situation: The Flight Crew volume is hard to hear. Solution: Using a Headset is HIGHLY recommended (make sure you select HS on the FS2Crew Main Panel so you can route the First Officers (FOs) audio through the headset). If you do not own a headset and do not wish to buy one, try turning down the Engine sound volume slider via the MSFS sound controls menu, under Settings. Also set the FS2Crew volume to Max on the FS2Crew Configuration panel.
FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 6

Situation: When I click the gauge used to open the FS2Crew Main Panel, nothing happens. Solution: Open the panel.cfg files for the PMDG 747 with notepad. Do you see FS2Crew window and gauge entries on it? If not, it means FS2Crew did not install properly and in all likelihood you have a very common FSX registry problem. Please run the Registry Repair Tool available in the FS2Crew 2010 Configuration Manager and re-install FS2Crew. The other possibility is that you have UAC enabled and UAC is blocking the PMDG Config Manager from updating the panel.cfg. Please disable UAC fully. Click here to learn how.

Situation: The speech recognition system is not detecting my voice very well. Solution: Be sure to run a Voice Training Session via the Windows Speech Recognition panel prior to using FS2Crew for the first time. Also we recommend that you use a good quality USB microphone, and when speaking, try to enunciate clearly with an American accent.

Situation: The Speech Recognition system seems too sensitive and it appears to be picking up either engine noise or other background sounds.

Solution: Go to your Windows Speech Recognition settings panel and check that your microphone sensitivity has not been reset to full. Only do this AFTER the FS2Crew Main Panel has been loaded. This is especially important for XP users to note.

TIPS FOR USING VOICE CONTROL:

Voice control is not always 100 percent accurate. While speech recognition technology has improved substantially over time, computers are still not as good as the human ear. And even the human ear can make mistakes. During development, FS2Crew used Windows 7. We found the accuracy of voice recognition to be extremely good. We recommend all users consider upgrading to the English version of Windows 7 (or Windows 7 Ultimate) for non-English users. Here are some tips to help improve speech recognition accuracy: Run the Voice Training Profile in the Microsoft Speech Recognition properties. Speak clearly and distinctly. Use a USB headset. Try to reduce ambient background noise.

If you forget the required checklist response, just say NEXT or CHECKED to move to the next checklist item!

THE WAY FS2CREW HANDLES VOICE RECOGNITION:

To improve the end-users experience as well as to ensure minimum voice command false positives, FS2Crew has taken the following steps. (By false positive we mean an unintended voice command, such as gear down, being detected by the voice recognition system and implemented, even when the user didnt intentionally say gear down.) Firstly, FS2Crew has linked many voice commands to selected conditions to reduce the likelihood of a false positive from undermining your in-game simulation experience. For example, the gear up command will only work under selected circumstances. Should the speech recognition system accidently hear gear up, our system helps prevent an unintentional gear up command from being implemented by your FO, for example, when youre doing the pre-flight events or when youre taxiing.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 8

Note: Autopilot commands will only work while airborne.

HOW FS2CREW INTERFACES WITH THE PMDG 747:

Because no SDK is available for the PMDG 747, the only way that the First Officer (FO) in FS2Crew can control switches and buttons on the PMDG 747 is via the available PMDG key assignments and simulated mouse clicks. For example, if you speak SELECT LEVEL CHANGE, FS2Crew will send the key press assigned to Level Change to simulate pressing that button. PLEASE CHECK APPENDIX H FOR THE FULL LIST OF FS2CREW-PMDG KEY ASSIGNMENTS. Things to watch for: KEYPRESSES: 1) Key presses can be intercepted if another window that accepts text input is in focus, such as the Squawkbox text input window. If using Squawkbox, deselect the Automatic Window Switching option to help keep the Flight Simulator window in focus.

2) If, for example, you speak: SELECT VNAV and VNAV does not engage on the autopilot panel, then there is a possibility that the aircraft is not configured properly to accept a VNAV engagement command. So please dont blame FS2Crew! All FS2Crew does is transmit the same key press you would make to activate selected aircraft functions on the PMDG 747 via the PMDG keyboard assignments.

SIMULATED MOUSE CLICKS: 1) The FO is essentially blind. All he does is blindly flip switches. If the switches, such as the landing lights, are in the expected position, then there is no problem. For example, if you call for the Runway Entry procedure, the FO will toggle the landing lights as part of this procedure. However, if the landing lights were already on prior to you calling for the Runway Entry Procedure, then the FO will end-up turning the landing lights back off.

2) Do not switch panel views while the mini-panels are open or they may not close.
FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 9

3) In FS2004/FS9 only, the FS2Crew FO cannot use the Mini-Panel to flip switches on the overhead that he is attempting to control for the following items: The APU, Fuel or the Electricals. He can only use the original big (original) overhead panel to flip switches associated with these functions. So do not be surprised if the main overhead panel opens up briefly on a few occasions if using FS9/FS2004! Special Note for FS9/FS2004 users: The only time the big overhead panel is a nuisance is when you taxi-in after landing and the FO opens the big panel to turn on the APU. Your view will be blocked for a few seconds. If you dont want this to happen, click the screw in the far left hand corner of the FS2Crew Main Panel. When you do that, a + symbol will appear on the Main Panel display. When that symbol is visible, the FS2Crew FO will not attempt to open the big overhead panel and start the APU. You will need to start the APU manually.

CARGO/FREIGHTER VERSION NOTES:

This product supports the Cargo models in addition to the Passenger models. FS2Crew will automatically detect if you are using a Cargo or a Passenger model. If using a Cargo model, please note the following:

1. YOU NEED TO CONTROL THE CARGO DOORS MANUALLY!!! BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY POSSIBLE CONFIGURATIONS, FS2CREW DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO CONTROL THE CARGO DOORS WHEN USING THE FREIGHTER MODELS.

2. FA and purser interaction will be disabled.

3. When replying to the CABIN CLEARANCE challenge in the checklists, speak: NOT APPLICABLE.

TUTORIAL FLIGHT

STEP 1 (Speech Recognition Engine Setup):

Vista / Windows 7 Users:
1. Your Speech Recognizer must be set to ENGLISH US, not English UK or any other language. In your Window Control Panel -> Speech Properties -> Speech Recognition panel it should look like this:

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 11

2. DO NOT FORGET TO RUN THE VOICE TRAINING!!! 3. If you do not have the English version of Windows 7 or Vista, you will not be able to set your Speech Recognizer to English US. If you own a non-English Vista or Win 7 Ultimate operating system, you will need to download the English language pack from Microsoft. If you do not own the Ultimate version, you can try switching your Windows display language to English using a 3rd party program called Vistalizator: http://www.froggie.sk/
FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 12

INSTALL VISTALIZATOR AT YOUR OWN RISK!!! However, a lot of FS2Crew users have successfully used Vistalizator previously and reported good results!!!- Bryan

XP Users:

1. XP users may or may not have the required SAPI engine installed on their computer. To check if you already have SAPI voice recognition software on your computer, open the Windows Control Panel and click the Speech icon if its there. If you can see a Speech Recognition tab, then SAPI is already installed on your computer. If youre an XP owner, you can download and install SAPI via the following link: http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/4/3/B4314928-7B71-4336-9DE76FA4CF00B7B3/SpeechSDK51.exe

2. Your Speech Properties panel in XP should look like the following picture:

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 13

3. DO NOT FORGET TO TRAIN YOUR VOICE PROFILE!

STEP 2 (Adding FS2Crew to the Panel.cfg):

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 14

1. Firstly, some background information: FS2Crew consists of a series of gauge files. These gauge files are only loaded and functional when they are included on the host aircrafts panel.cfg file. If these gauge files are not present on the host aircrafts panel.cfg file, then FS2Crew will not run when you load the PMDG 747.

2. Next we must make the FS2Crew modified panel.cfg file active so that it becomes the default panel.cfg file that will be loaded when you select the PMDG 747 in the FS9/FSX Main Menu. 3. To do this, open the FS2CREW PMDG 747 CONFIGURATION MANAGER. The FS2CREW PMDG 747 CONFIGURATION MANAGER is located in: Start All Programs FS2CREW2010 There should also be an icon on your desktop! 4. Next, you need to set the PMDG 747 Panel.CFGs to the FS2Crew version. Note that unlike previous versions of FS2Crew, this procedure is NOT done automatically for you. YOU MUST MANUALLY SET THE PANEL.CFG FILES TO FS2CREW BASED ON WHICH VERSIONS OF THE PMDG 747 YOU OWN. 5. Finally, you need to set the PMDG KEYBOARD ASSIGNMENTS.INI file to FS2Crew. The FS2Crew 'commands' use many of the available PMDG keyboard assignments in order to interface with the PMDG 747.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 15

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 16

6. If everything went correctly, the WINDOWS SECTION in your PMDG 747 panel.cfg files should look something like this with the additional FS2Crew entries highlighted in red [Window Titles] >PMDG Window Entries Starting at Window 00< // FS2Crew Section Window21=FS2Crew Main Panel Window22=FS2Crew Configuration Panel window23=FS2Crew Fuel Sheet window24=PMDG Mini Overhead window25=PMDG Mini RadioStack window26=PMDG Mini Gear Lever window27=PMDG Mini EFIS FO window28=PMDG Mini Console Window29=FS2Crew Marshaller Panel

Important Note: FS2Crew swaps the panel.cfg files in their entirety (however, FS2Crew does make a backup copy of your original panel.cfg file). HOWEVER, IF YOU MADE CUSTOM MODIFICATIONS TO YOUR PANEL.CFGs FILES YOU WILL NEED TO RE-ENTER THEM!!!

STEP 3 (Getting setup for Flight):

1. Printout this manual if you have not already done so! The manual is a MUST! 2. Load either FSX or FS9. 3. Load the PMDG 747 and select your desired airport and gate/ramp location. 4. If you experience any problems try: not using saved situation files and never load the 747 from a tower, spot or another aircrafts VC cockpit.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 17

It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you start the 747 so it loads by default into the 2D cockpit.

5. Open the PMDG MENU (via the ADD-ONS/ PMDG menu on the top of the screen). Uncheck V-Spds to prevent FS2Crew and the PMDG 747s built-in FO from making duplicate callouts.

STEP 4 (Importing FS2Crew Panel Data - OPTIONAL):

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 18

1. In the tutorial flight, were going to run the Pre-Flight events. In order to that, we need to load the aircraft so its in a Cold and Dark state.

FSX:

Go to: Addons PMDG Panel State

Select the PMDG Cold and Dark Panel KPAE State.

Note that there are two versions: One for the Pax Model and one for the Freighter.

2D and VC Cockpit:

1. Left click the (whiskey) Compass to open the FS2Crew Main Panel.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 21

The FS2Crew Main Panel should appear.

If the Main Panel does not appear, then it probably means that your 747s panel.cfg file was not updated to the FS2Crew version. Please contact FS2Crew for assistance. You have probably forgotten to click SET PANEL CFG TO FS2CREW via the FS2Crew PMDG 747 Config Manager.

STEP 6 (The FS2Crew Main Panel):

1. Lets examine some of the buttons and features on the Main Panel:

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 22

Left Screw:

For FS9 users only. If pressed, a + symbol will appear on the Main Display. During the After Landing Flow, the FO will not open the big PMDG overhead panel and turn on the APU. You will need to turn on the APU manually. Active Checklist/Action Mode. Cycles Checklist/Action Mode forwards and backwards. Note: Modes will generally auto-cycle to the next selection for you. Toggles voice recognition on and off. Generally, you should never need to turn it off. However, if the autopilot values runaway after asking the FO to set the autopilot, you can toggle the voice engine OFF and ON to break the runaway cycle. Toggles green bar on/off that displays what the speech engine hears through your microphone. Toggles Hard Mute on/off. If Hard Mute is on, the FO will not act on input detected by the speech recognition engine. Routes most First Officer audio through your headset. Ensure the audio device associated with your USB headset is selected in the Headset display in the Configuration panel. First Officer audio that is not routed through the headset includes situations in which the FO would not be wearing his headset during the pre-flight events. Press to fast forward the Pre-Flight Events timer counter down in one minute increments. Opens FS2Crew Configuration Panel. Press to contact the Flight Attendant (FA) while in flight.

STEP 7 (SOFT AND HARD MUTING):

1. Should you wish to prevent your virtual First Officer from acting on any speech commands or noise that speech recognition detects, you can mute the FO. You would

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 24

typically use the mute function when communicating with an on-line ATC or if you are running a simulated brief (should you wish to do that). SOFT MUTE: Push and hold the button you have assigned for the mute function in the FS2Crew 747 Configuration Manager. Release that button to re-engage the FOs ability to act on recognized speech commands. I recommend using LEFT CONTROL for the soft mute key.

IMPORTANT NOTE IF USING A 'CH YOKE' OR ANOTHER JOYSTICK/YOKE COMBINATION: If you experience that Mute is not working with your Joystick/Yoke, please try the following options: 1) Assign the key you assigned to mute to your desired Yoke/Joystick button via FSUIPC. 2) You can also accomplish the same result using a freeware program called Joker. 3) If using a Saitek yoke, you can also follow the advice described in this thread.

HARD MUTE: Left click the LK button on the Main Panel to toggle on/off the permanent (Hard) mute function. An M symbol will appear in the top right hand corner of the main display area when mute is functioning. If Hard Mute is active, the M+ symbol will appear and it will flash. A good time to use Hard Mute is when you are in cruise and you do not need to make any speech commands.

STEP 8 (The FS2Crew Config Panel):

Its better to set the elevation higher rather than lower. Decision Height. Use the mouse wheel to set the altitude at which the FO will call DECIDE. Important: If the DH value is set to 200 feet or greater, then the DECIDE call is based off a Barometric altimeter value. This would be used during a standard CAT 1 ILS or Non-Precision approach. The value for the Decision Altitude can be found on the Instrument Approach Chart. On a regular ILS, for example, if the runway elevation was 1000 feet, youd probably set DH to a value like 1200, since the Decision Altitude on a CAT 1 ILS is usually 200 feet above the runway. If the value is set to a number greater than 0 but less than 200 feet, it is assumed you are doing a CAT II or CAT III approach, in which case the DECIDE call is based off the Radio Altimeter, not the barometric altimeter. If the value is set to 0, then it is assumed you are doing a Visual approach, and no DECIDE call will play.

DH:

If the value is set to below 0 (in other words, one level below Visual, then the display will change to GPWS. If set to GPWS, the FS2Crew FO will not announce V1 or Decide. You would chose this setting if using GPWS callouts.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 28

STEP 9 (Setting up FS Video Marshaller):

1. The PMDG 747 Edition of FS2Crew includes a special version of FS Video Marshaller to further enhance the experience of this simulation. Using FS Video Marshaller is completely optional, as you are not required to use it.

2. FSX users only: If you want to use the Video Marshaller, you MUST be in Windowed Mode, not full Screen Mode, or FSX may crash when you attempt to play the video. This does not affect FS9 users. Press ALT ENTER on your keyboard to cycle between full screen and windowed modes.

3. To setup FS Video Marshaller, uncheck Pause on task switch (found in the Main Settings General as shown:

1. Load the PMDG Cold and Dark panel state if you have not already done so. 2. Next, on the Configuration Panel, press the RUN PF button. This will trigger the preflight routine in which you will experience the Pre-Flight events. Note that the time remaining to departure, which starts at plus 45 minutes, will start winding down. You can fast forward the time down by pressing the FF button on the Main Panel. Important note: For every flight, please set the fuel load at the beginning of each flight via the PMDG Fuel Loading menu. When you do that, the fuel pumps on the overhead panel will self-configure. DO NOT FORGET TO PERFORM THIS STEP!!! Also note that you, the Captain, are responsible for setting up the Overhead Panel and FMC. Make sure you get the APU or External power up and running right away or the Cargo doors will be unable to open. If using the PMDG Cold and Dark Panel States, make sure the Engine Generator Control switches are turned on. Theyre easy to forget.

Also sure the Window Heat, Engine Bleeds, Engine Hydraulic Pumps and Trim Air are turned on. You would also turn on the Yaw Dampers after the IRSs have aligned.

Note that running the Pre-Flight events is OPTIONAL. You do not need run the pre-flight events for every flight! PRE-FLIGHT EVENTS:

7. When the FO announces that youre passing the Transition Altitude, set your altimeter to standard pressure (2992/1013).

8. There isnt much to do from this point on until you start setting up for the Approach in Step 18. It is recommended that you enable Hard Mute during this time unless you need to make a specific voice command.

FS2Crew PMDG 747 Voice Commander Version 1.2 Page 40

STEP 21 (Approach Setup and Briefing):

1. You need to set the Decision Altitude/Decision Height in the FS2Crew Config Panel. Use your mouse wheel to select a value.

DH Value Selection on FS2Crew CFG Panel: 200 Feet or Greater = CATI ILS or Non-Precision Approach. Note that this value is based on the Barometric Altimeter and is referred to as a DECISION ALTITUDE (DA). 1 to 199 Feet = Monitored CAT II or CAT III ILS. Note this value is based on the Radar Altimeter and is referred to as a DECISION HEIGHT (DH). 0 Feet = Visual Approach. < 0 Feet = GPWS. Only select if using GPWS callouts for the V1 and Decide calls.

2. When desired in the cruise, set the Autobrake to the desired setting for landing. 3. About 50 NM back of the Top of Descent, announce that youre going to perform the Approach Briefing by speaking ARE YOU READY FOR THE APPROACH BRIEF? 4. You must complete the brief by speaking ANY QUESTIONS? 5. The FO will press RECALL a few moments after youve completed the brief. Any Questions is the trigger for the FO to press the Recall button. Wait for the FO to say Recall before calling for the Descent Checklist. 6. You will see a flashing * symbol in the top left hand corner of the FS2Crew Main Panel. This is to signify that FS2Crew is in Descent Mode. Being in Descent Mode is a necessary condition for the calls and events to work that follow.
