Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) 1. Am I paid directly on the Company payroll, or can I be paid through a limited company whilst working as a contracted RMO?
All of our doctors working fixed term contracts are employed directly by the Company. This means that they must be paid through the payroll. Unfortunately we are not able to offer a service whereby doctors are paid through limited companies. Payslips are automatically sent direct to your email address; please ensure that these details are correct. If you do not have an email account then advise NES at the start of your contract to arrange a hard copy to be sent.

2. Does NES offer a pension scheme that I can join?

There is no formal Company pension scheme on offer for our doctors. We do however advise individuals to take advantage of subsidised government personal pension schemes, more details of which can be found at www.hmrc.gov.uk.

3. How is my pay calculated?

Our doctors are paid for the hours that they do and not for time off. There are many opportunities to earn extra money by undertaking ad hoc cover or standby work in the weeks off. If you are interested in taking advantage of these opportunities, you will need to make this known to your Medical Staffing Manager (MSM).

4. How do I receive my holiday pay?

Your holiday pay will be accrued for every hour that you work. This money is then used to pay for time that you take off as holiday, so that you do not suffer financially for taking leave. If you do not take any time off during your stay, your accrued holiday pay is paid out as a lump sum either when you finish or extend your contract.

5. Is holiday pay taxable?

Your salary will indeed be subject to tax. Holiday pay is simply a part of your salary that is paid via a different method. The only pay that our doctors receive tax-free is reimbursement for travel expenses.

6. Am I entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)?

Yes, although there are many conditions that must be fulfilled and rules to follow. Visit www.hmrc.gov.uk for further information.

7. How much tax will I pay over my contract period?

Your tax depends on how many hours you work and your rate of pay. Go to www.hmrc.gov.uk for the latest information.

8. I am on an ABCD rotation. Am I entitled to any free accommodation?

Doctors taking advantage of the improved hourly pay and conditions on offer for the ABCD rotations are still entitled to some free accommodation. Most of our doctors working in these hospitals prefer to rent or buy a local property, but the hospitals are still duty-bound to provide an RMO room for the doctor working on night shifts.

9. Can I do more than my contracted Standby weeks?

Yes, many of our doctors use Standby as a way of obtaining extra work. It is worth remembering that we provide free accommodation for our Standbys, and we will also pay them 200 even if they are not activated.

10. On my off weeks can I do extra locum work either for NES HMS or another agency?
Whilst we do comply wherever possible with our clients desire to keep doctors fresh, we do offer opportunities to do extra work through a number of different methods. Please note that you are not allowed to do locum if you are on a Work Permit (Certificate of Sponsorship).
