Section II: Course Details


Detailed Description Students examine the Health & Safety legislation with a focus on Ontario Acts and Regulations including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA). Through hands-on experiential learning and practice, in-class discussions, presentations and lectures, students demonstrate the requirements necessary for legal compliance within Health & Safety legislation. Program Context Business Human Resources Program Coordinator: John Hardisty This is a required course in term 3 of the Human Resources program. It builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired in the first year Human Resource Management courses and is a compulsory academic component towards CHRP designation.

Course Critical Performance and Learning Outcomes Critical Performance By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to determine the specific requirements for compliance within the workplace under the OHSA & WSIA regarding workplace hazard identification, assessment and control. Learning Outcomes To achieve the critical performance, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

Ascertain the appropriate Health & Safety legislation pertaining to a specific workplace 2. Apply the H&S legislation to the workplace 3. Explain the three elements of WHMIS 4. Recognize, assess and discuss recommendations for specific hazards in the workplace 5. Describe the steps of a workplace inspection 6. Explain the stages of an accident investigation 7. Compute frequency & severity rates 8. Organize the required documentation for WSIB claims 9. Articulate the obligations of the workplace parties regarding a WSIB claim. Evaluation Plan Students demonstrate their learning in the following ways: 1. 35% 35% on 30% Test 1 - (Theory) Multiple choice and short answer questions on OHSA and WHMIS and specific hazards Test 2 - (Theory) Multiple choice and short answer questions inspections, investigations and WSIA Teacher assigned activities (which may include H&S journals, workplace H&S inspection project, presentations) Provincial Context The course meets the following Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities requirements: Essential Employability Skills Essential Employability Skills emphasized in the course:

Clarify the WSI classification of companies and premium structures Define an accident Tabulate the WSI forms, procedures and reporting requirements Discuss the benefits available to workers Explain the return to work obligations for workers and employers Determine the Labour Market Re-entry obligations Summarize the Appeals procedure
