Curbside Recycling Options

New curbside recycling programs have been implemented in the City of Sandusky, Berlin-Milan, Huron Township, and Perkins Township. Curbside recycling programs existed in Erie County before 2011 but a big push for better programs in the County have recently come to light. The District has been monitoring the progress of the new programs. The below chart shows the progress from January-June 2011. Please note that Perkins Township Program did not start until May 2011, after the removal of the drop-off recycling location at 2900 Columbus Avenue April 30th this year. Continued on page 2

Curbside Continued
The City of Huron established their curbside recycling program in the late 1990s with implementation of a city-wide contract.. Other curbside recycling programs existed throughout Erie County, but relied solely on the home owner to contract for the recycling services. By establishing a contract the City was able to lock in lower rates and offer more services such as yard waste. The program was not well received during the first year of implementation by City of Huron residents. The program finally became common-place and City of Huron residents have encourage the City Council to accept a wider variety of materials, adopt the container method, and even agreed to be the first pilot in the state for collecting food scrap organics in their current curbside yard waste program. During the months of January-

from page 1
June 2011 the City of Huron has collected:

458 tons of recyclables 486 tons of yard waste Of that 486 tons of yard waste, 49 tons of that material is food waste.
