Important Information for Students The criteria each task relates to are shown against that task where possible. Please note that plagiarism is treated as a serious offence and therefore the work you produce must be individual and original although may work in groups in some instances (Please refer to Student Handbook on Plagiarism & Cheating). All sources of information must be referenced using Harvard referencing where a reference list/Bibliography should be included at the end of the assignment. Please note that the submission date given for this assignment is the final date that you can hand over the assignment. A one week grace period maybe extended with prior approval from the Program Manager Undergraduate. However, note that submissions handed in one week late will be graded lower (Please refer to the Student Handbook on Assessments - Late Submissions & Penalties). Assignments returned to students for re-working must be re-submitted within 10 days (Please refer to Student Handbook on Assignments Re-submission).

Failure to re-submit the previously marked assignment with the re-submitted assignment will mean that results cannot be released for the respective unit.

Please read, follow and reference both the contents of the unit outline and the grading criteria of the assignment before completing this assignment.

Task 1: A hollow circular column of length 4.5 m, external diameter 200 mm and internal diameter 150 mm is fixed at both ends. It carries a load of 180 kN at an eccentricity of 17 mm from the axis of column. (Assume that the Youngs Modulus E = 0.96 x 105 N mm-2) I. Find the maximum stress developed at any point in the column. (P2.3) II. What should be the limiting eccentricity if tension is not to be developed within the column? (M1) Task 2: Two beams (Beam 1 and Beam 2) made of the same material and of equal cross section, cross each other at right angles at their mid span (Figure 2.a). Each of the beams is simply supported. If a vertical load of 10 kN acts at the junction, determine the reaction at the supports of both the beams. Span of Beam 1 and Beam 2 are 9 m and 7 m respectively. (D3)

A straight circular bar of steel 1 cm in diameter and 120 cm long is mounted in a testing machine and loaded axially in compression till it buckles. Assuming Eulers formula for pinned ends is applicable in this case, I. II. Find the buckling load for the steel bar (P2.4) Estimate the maximum central deflection before the material reaches its yields stress of 350 N mm-2 (M2). (Assume that the Modulus of Elasticity E = 0.21 x 105 N mm-2)

Task 4: The shear stress at the surface of a solid steel shaft is 80 N mm-2 when subjected to the action of a torque. When used as a beam simply supported at the ends and centrally loaded, the greatest bending stress at the surface of the shaft is 120 N mm-2. I. Compare the strain energies of the shaft for the two conditions of loading. (P3.1) II. What is the effect on this ratio if the shaft is hollow, stresses remaining unchanged? (D1) (Assume that the Modulus of Elasticity E = 0.2 MN mm-2, and Modulus of Rigidity N = 0.08 MN mm-2)

Task 5: The simple beam shown in the Figure 5.a supports a concentrated load P acting at distance a from the left-hand support and distance b from the right-hand support. Determine the deflection D at point D where the load is applied. (Obtain the solution by determining the strain energy of the beam and then using Castiglianos theorem.) (P3.2)

Figure 5.a: Simply supported beam Task 6: a.) An object of weight W is dropped onto the midpoint of a simply supported beam AB from a height h (see Figure 6.a). The beam has a rectangular cross section of area A. Assuming that h is very large compared to the deflection of the beam when the weight W is applied statically, obtain a formula for the maximum bending stress max in the beam due to the falling weight. The beam has uniform flexural rigidity EI. Disregard the weight of the beam itself, and consider only the effects of the given loads. (P3.4)

b.) A man weighing 600 N jumps from a height of 0.5 m on a diving board of dimensions 30 cm x 6 cm supported as shown in Figure 6.b. I.) Find the maximum stress produced in the board. (D3) (Assume that the Modulus of Elasticity E = 10 kN mm-2)
