design unity

unified design principle

In sanskrit the bindu is considered the point at which creation begins and the point at which the unity becomes the many. The symbol relates directly to Idioms unified design principle, where a core, central idea becomes highly potent by serving the most numbers.

Post Industrial Revolution, we trained ourselves to separate the skills needed for business from inherent design skills and insights. Creating generation after generation that created taller and narrower silos. What we do at Idiom, is simple. We methodically (and with great glee) remove all the barriers that stand between individual design skills and the ideas that govern business. Creating an open, fertile ground where all disciplines of business and design can come together to create unified scenarios for the future. Scenarios where business and design plot together to adapt to the changing milieus we operate in. When every design discipline and every business discipline come together, it unlocks latent potential, creates new business opportunities and transforms businesses and brands. For the future and for the better.

in translation, the unified design principle is design that makes business sense.

It wasnt meant to be an institution. 5 years ago, we got the best from across design and business disciplines together. To explore the possibilities of unifying design and business in an India that was transforming on a daily basis. In the next 5, a lot happened. Idiom became Indias largest holistic design house. It became an incubator for business ideas. It became an incubator for design ideas. And more often than not, ideas from the design incubator started sneaking into the business incubator. Idiom became a centre for multi-disciplinary interaction. With business and design students from across the world collaborating on projects real, imaginary and sometimes, illuminating.

What began as an attempt to unify design and business soon had public policy, urban development, micro finance and everything under the sun being debated, prototyped and implemented. Idiom began as a reactive response to a changing India. Along the way, we went from reactive to proactive. From looking at solutions, to charting future scenarios. And in this we were aided by our founding objective, to bring together practitioners of practically every design and business discipline. Walk in today and youll find bureaucrats, architects, students, product designers, bankers, graphic designers, clients, teachers and not a single silo. We unified. And tomorrow, this is exactly what we want it to be.

ideas

a buzzing, colourful little machine that takes ideas and transforms them.
Like we said before, Idiom is a multi-disciplinary collaboration. Where practitioners from across design and business disciplines can look at a problem or an idea from different perspectives and generate solutions that are unified and make business sense. While the overall approach is holistic, we are also able to bring specialised skills into the process where required. Though not easy to draw boundaries around, read on for some of our practices.

Process
INSIGHTS IDEAS IMPLEMENTATION
Interaction Understanding the brief and context, absorbing the ambitions of our partner. Immerse Think. Use all sense. Learn from life. Listen. Sift Sift the information, apply filters and arrive at a focused direction. Idea definition Clearly define one big idea. Idea development Develop the details so that it starts coming alive. Idea detailing Design and detail every element. Realise Freeze on materials, budgets and sampling. Prototype Creating a live working model of the idea for a test run. Review To put it out there in the open for reactions and reviews. Look, we are doing this together. We have processes, yes. And we have the people from across disciplines. But what really has worked for us is a collaborative environment. In which, the client plays a huge role. Aspirations and ambitions are where most ideas take root. And it is best that the growth that follows, is observed, guided and appreciated together. Lets do it together.

Business and brands Unified design principle An idea becomes potent when it serves the most numbers. Design is merely a tool to take the idea from mind to market with skill, speed and imagination. We develop the brand strategy and design the brand identity system for just about any consumer interface business or corporation, product, retail outlet, restaurant, hotel, real estate venture, township and services across diverse sectors.

Spirit

Idiom, is a learning space. With large open spaces that we believe lead to open minds. Where individual skills thrive and learn from a whole lot of other alien skills. The advantage Idiom offers is that you can see an idea take form as different skills contribute to make it happen across the spectrum. Here are a few of the spaces within.

Commonwealth Games 2010

IDENTITY + LOOK DESIGN

Local ethos, global quality for the 19th Commonwealth Games 2010 and the city of Delhi India was once known as the Soney ki Chidiya, the bird of gold! India can once again be the Soney ki Chidiya. Where everyone is prospering. By creating spaces, brands, experiences that recognise everyones needs and that celebrate earning, living and grooming. In 2006 Idiom was chosen over various international and national firms to design the identity of the most prestigious event hosted by the country in the decade. The final identity was derived over a year of research and exploration on various forms that have been synonomous with India. Be it art, architecture, fashion... way of living. The logo visually is the creation of the Indian idiom of global standards of the city of Delhi and India.

Once, India was the Soney ki Chidiya. A land and people held in awe. For her prosperity. For her intellect. For her culture. Today the world looks towards India again. And it is in our hands to make the Soney ki Chidiya soar again.
