A new Vermont Spruce Grouse Recovery Plan was announced Wednesday by Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz. The plan to restore a self-sustaining population of the State-Endangered spruce grouse in Vermont is based on information collected and reviewed by state and private scientists working together over several decades. I want to thank our state wildlife biologists and members of Vermonts Bird Scientific Advisory Group for producing a comprehensive and long-needed Spruce Grouse Recovery Plan for Vermont, said Markowitz. Our native spruce grouse are part of Vermonts natural heritage and an indicator species for the health of the spruce-fir forest, a unique habitat that many other wildlife rely on for survival. Spruce grouse (Falcipennis canadensis) inhabit the boreal forests of North America. Although considered common in Canada, Alaska and Maine, in Vermont the species is near the southern edge of its range. Historical accounts show that spruce grouse were present in northeastern Vermont during the mid-1800s. Extensive timber cutting since then resulted in removal of much of their breeding habitat and dramatic declines in their numbers. Vermonts current breeding spruce grouse population exists in lowland black spruce wetlands and mixed spruce-balsam fir-larch habitat in northern Essex County. Most of the area where the birds are found is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Periodic surveys between 1991 and 2003 suggested a stable population of 150 to 300 adult spruce grouse existed in the area, but surveys conducted since then indicate there may be a decline in numbers. The Bird Scientific Advisory Group was
pleased with the collaborative approach with which this document was created, said Mark LaBarr, Conservation Program Manager for Audubon Vermont. The process was thorough and inclusive and produced a document that will guide future management actions. We look forward to the day when spruce grouse can join osprey and peregrine falcon as a recovered species in Vermont. Biologists believe the biggest threats to the existing spruce grouse population would be widespread fire or diseases that would reduce habitat or directly affect the birds. Full recovery of spruce grouse in Vermont will require the establishment of two additional populations, most likely on state lands in Victory and Granby (southern Essex County), and in Norton (northern Essex County). The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department began restoring spruce grouse into Victory Basin in 2008 with 24 birds captured in Maine and 15 from Quebec. In 2009 and 2010, an additional 95 birds were brought in from Maine and Quebec, bringing the total to 134 grouse stocked in Victory Basin. Spruce grouse in Vermont may be downlisted to Threatened status if, on average for five years, there are at least two self-sustaining populations, each with at least 30 nesting females, and with dispersal between populations. Removing the spruce grouse from Vermonts Endangered and Threatened Species List will be recommended if, on average for five years, there are at least three self-sustaining populations, each with at least 30 nesting females, and with dispersal between populations. The Vermont Spruce Grouse Recovery Plan is on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife website, www. vtfishandwildlife.com.

A total of 385 permits will be issued for Vermonts 20th annual regular October moose season under a proposal the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Board gave preliminary approval to last Wednesday. The board voted unanimously on a proposal presented by Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department biologists that allocates permits in 17 of the states 26 Wildlife Management Units. The 385 permits proposed by the department represent a slight decrease from the 405 permits issued last year. Under the proposal, hunters are expected to harvest over 200 animals during the Oct. 20-25 season. Given Vermonts track record of hunting success rates, this proposal allows us to achieve moose population goals for various parts of the state that have been set in the 10-Year Big Game Management Plan, said biologist Cedric Alexander, Vermonts moose project leader. Its the intent of this proposal to allow slow population growth in some regions of the state and stabilize moose numbers in other parts of the state. Alexander estimates Vermont has 2,500 to 3,000 moose statewide with the greatest concentration occurring in the Northeast Kingdom. Vermont also holds a special archery-only moose season. Fifty permits will be awarded for
the Oct. 1-7, 2012 archery moose season. Moose hunting permit lottery applications, $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, will be available on Vermont Fish & Wildlifes website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) in early May. Printed applications are scheduled to be available at license agents in early June. Two lotteries will be held, one for the regular hunting season and one for the archery season. Winners of either lottery will purchase resident hunting permits for $100 or nonresident hunting permits for $350. Hunters also will have the option to bid on five moose hunting permits in an auction to be announced later. As part of the Fish & Wildlife Boards rule process, the moose permit proposal must be voted on at two more upcoming board meetings.
Onion River Sports will host the 9th Annual Maple Onion 15K Freestyle Ski Race at the Morse Farm Ski Touring Center on Saturday, February 25th from 10am-1pm. The world-class terrain at the Morse Farm Ski Touring Center was designed by John Morton, Nordic ski Olympian and trail designer. John calls the terrain a trail system design in the Norwegian style of manageable climbs and exhilarating descents. Its a great combination of gentle terrain for novices and challenging trails for advanced skiers. This course provides a challenging but scenic ski through maple-filled woods and open meadows. Prizes will be awarded to overall winners and all racers will have the opportunity to win additional prizes in a raffle. Each year the course varies, but the competitive spirit doesnt. Racers can be assured that there will be lots of friendly competition and plenty of enjoyable skiing! says Carrie Baker, Onion River Sports Events Director. Register before the race at www.skireg.com by February 22, or the day of the race beginning at 9am. Pre-registration cost is $15 for adults, day-of registration is $20. $5 entry fee for youth racers ages 8-17. All registration fees include lunch on the porch at the Morse Farm Ski Touring Center, 1168 County Rd, Montpelier. All proceeds benefit the Onion River Nordic Junior Ski programs. less than a minute later by Beaver Mike Driscoll assisted by Andrew Bonazza and Mike Hoban bringing the score to 4-3 Babson. This fast paced game has not slowed up at all as Shane Gorman of Norwich hits the net at 18:16 to tie it at 4-4. Gorman was assisted by Pier-Oliver Cotnoir and Travis Janke. Gormans goal brought on overtime and the play seemed to have slowed just a bit by both teams. No scoring in OT ended the play with a tie 4-4. Babson had 29 shots on goal to Norwichs 32. Zeke Testa Babsons goal keeper had 28 saves and Norwich goalie Chris Czarnota had 25 saves. Norwichs record goes to 20-2-3, 15-2-2 ECAC East and Babsons record to 9-12-5, 9-5-5 ECAC East. Two years ago, Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same year. Last year, everything fell apart. After three victories -- he also won the Charlotte Motor Speedway fall race -McMurray plummeted to 27th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings last season, finishing in the top five only twice and winning the pole at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Needless to say, changes were in order during the offseason. Team owner Chip Ganassi overhauled the entire team in the wake of disappointing seasons by both McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya. Well, Chip has made a really big commitment, McMurray said. I mean, they changed a lot of management. Theres been a tremendous amount of changes to the 42 car (Montoya). There have been quite a few changes to the 1 car (his). We hired a lot of new people from different organizations. You know, the frustrating part is that we won races with the guys who were here before, won some really big races, he said.
But I think the morale in the shop got way down, and everyone ... you know, you start criticizing everybody, and Chip needed to make a change to get everybody pumped back up. Based on preseason testing, the speeds at Daytona International Speedway figure to be way up. It appears that speeds of more than 200 mph will be commonplace in the Budweiser Shootout on Feb. 18 and the Daytona 500 on Feb. 26. For me it doesnt really feel any different, said McMurray, who is from Joplin, Mo. You cant tell a big difference from 190 to 205. You do at a place like Texas or Atlanta, but here (Daytona) not so much because you have so much grip, the cars drive so well, and you dont feel the big speed difference. I dont know why NASCAR is OK with going a little faster now. My guess would be that they have become educated on how fast the cars can go and, if they get out of control, how stable they will be. I always thought 200 mph was the dont go past zone, but they seem to be comfortable with that, and the car doesnt feel a lot different. *** Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.)
