Answer:

Question: What is Electronic Licensing Management (ELM)? Answer: ELM is a streamlined software distribution and management solution. Rather than receiving and managing CDs and multiple paper licenses, ELM allows you to perform these functions electronicallyand to be assured that your PowerPath/VE deployment conforms to the licenses purchased.

Question: What are the platform requirements for the ELM server? Answer: The qualified ELM server platforms include Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, and Windows 2008 R2 SP1, as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 and RHEL 6. Refer to ELM documentation in Powerlink for details. The ELM server software can run on either a physical or virtual server.

Question: What ELM modes are supported for PowerPath/VE for VMware? Answer: The ELM modes supported for PowerPath/VE for VMware include: Unserved: Unserved (Node-Lock/ File Based/ Uncounted); Served: Floating/ Counted using a licensing server Question: How do I know which ELM mode to select? Answer: General guidelines for helping you select the right ELM mode for your data center follow: ELM Unserved mode is a good fit for small sites (up to about 20 hosts) and requires you to enter the license key manually for each ESX host. This mode is not supported on vSphere 5 stateless hosts. ELM Served mode with centralized license management is a good fit for most larger deployments and is required for stateless/auto-deployed hosts (vSphere 5 only). An ELM license server is required for this mode. Question: Answer: Do I need a separate and unique license file for each ESX host in the Unserved mode? Yes. There must be a separate, unique file for each ESX host. Each license file must be individually activated via the PowerLink Licensing Portal based on the ESX System ID for that ESX host.

Question: If I already have a license server, what do they need to do to add license management for PowerPath/VE? Answer: If you already have an EMC license server, all you need to do is add the license file to the licensing path of the license server.

Question: Is the number of allowable re-hosts decremented if I switch from Unserved to Served mode or vice versa? Answer: No. You are allowed up to 3 re-hosts with either an Unserved or Served mode license for PowerPath. If you re-hosted 2 times in the Unserved mode and then switched to Served mode, you have 3 re-hosts available on that license.
