Keep a look out for a new brochure being sent out this week to help educate people on the benefits of being an organ donor. Canowindra Community Health, with a working party of community members, is partnering with local groups including Cabonne Council, Canowindra Sports Trust, Lodge Canowindra, Canowindra High School and sporting groups to develop the "Don't be a Witness, Get into Fitness" exercise track. The fitness path design includes organ shaped exercise sites to promote the message of looking after your organs to reduce lifestyle diseases and to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation. If someone close to you has decided to become an organ and tissue donor you need to know their wishes because one day you could be asked to give the final OK. The most important thing that helps a family confirm a loved ones wishes one day is asking and knowing those wishes today. Many Australians know someone whose life has been touched by organ and tissue donation and during DonateLife Week 2012 (19-26 February) we are asking them to share these inspirational stories with others. The DonateLife Book of Life: A collection of life-saving and life-changing stories from people touched by organ and tissue donation contains stories of hope about organ and tissue donation written by everyday Australians. Visit www.donatelife.gov.au for more information or to share your story and read other stories in our online DonateLife Book of Life. TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER YOUR ORGANS Aim to eat at least 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables every day. Limit your intake of unhealthy snacks and take-away foods. Get out and get active! Aim for 30 minutes or more of physical activity everyday. Drink no more than 2 standard alcoholic drinks on any day.

Cabonne Council will hold a free barbecue at Canowindra Pool next week to mark the completion of the pools refurbished amenities block. Canowindra Councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker will host the sausage sizzle from 4pm on Saturday 3 March 2012 and are inviting everyone in Canowindra to come along and inspect the $350,000 project. And to encourage as many people as possible to attend, non-season ticket holders will be given free entry to the pool after 3.30pm. The upgrade has given us a fantastic facility and we would like everyone to come along and have a look, Cr Durkin said. The free sausage sizzle is also Councils way of thanking the people of Canowindra for being so patient because the building work was undertaken during the swimming season. Cr Walker said the Council installed temporary change room facilities at the pool while the work was being carried out so it did not have to wait until the end of the swimming season to start the project. We wanted pool users to have the benefit of the new amenities as soon as possible, he said. The old amenities block was gutted and the walls were concrete rendered while the floors were resurfaced in stencilled concrete and a roof erected over the building. One of the real benefits of the upgrade is the inclusion of a disabled toilet and change room in the new design. This area will have a dual use as a family room and baby change area. Anyone attending the free sausage sizzle will be able to purchase drinks, lollies and chips from the pool kiosk.

CELEBRATE THE NEW POOL AMENITIES!

Good on you Canowindra!!!

To the editor...

Those who attend Orange Base Hospital can only be impressed by this new facility. The turnoff is trying to find a parking space. The problem arises for people attending clinics who drive around for considerable periods of time to find a space which is usually a long way from the entrance. It is thus impossible to gauge just how much extra time is needed to allow for this search to occur which usually results quite often in people being late for an appointment. It is hoped that "priority parking" can be set aside closer to the entrance of the hospital to be used by people attending clinics. "Long stay" car parking is better located further from the entrance. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood, Canowindra A big thank you to the executives of the Canowindra Rugby Club for making the decision to purchase a 22 seater bus. With the demise of the local Hospital Bus it was going to be hard this year to keep the social side of the Senior people in Canowindra continuing, eg. The Golden Oldies - MEN - established for 10 years; and the Happy Wanderers - WOMEN established 8 years. With the help of the Health Centre and a very reasonable hiring fee from the Rugby Club, we are assured of continuing during 2012. GO THE PYTHONS! Cec Balcombe, Canowindra The Canowindra Lions Club wishes to advise that the Seniors Bus Trip to the Zig Zag Railway is on Friday 23 March 2012. Tickets are now available at the cost of $30, which covers bus & train trip and morning tea. Lunch will be at the Lithgow Workers Club and will not be covered by your ticket. The bus will be leaving from the Canowindra Bowling Club at 7:00am. For tickets, please see me at 63 Ryall St or phone 6344 1497. Thank you, Ron Cain, Lions Club Canowindra

BALLOON VOLUNTEERS NEEDED It's that time of year again where the coloured orbs will fill the early morning skies. Why not volunteer and be part of the excitement or what is one of Canowindra's favourite spectacles. Observer recruitment is well underway, however there are positions for general volunteers still available. Roles available include: wind readers (requiring an early start of 3am, but will be completed by 6am); distribution of program brochures to surrounding towns; community, sporting and school groups are welcome to become involved and use this as an opportunity to fundraise for your special cause. If you would like to get involved in this wonderful event and be part of the energy and buzz that is created by entrancing balloons and enthralled crowds, please contact the Committee on 02 6344 1819. THE LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH What a brilliant beginning for folk@canowindra at our January show. Milltown - a 5 piece hillbilly band, were greatly enjoyed by about 60 adults, plus kids! (Not to mention several great open mike acts). So, if you're planning to come along this month, better arrive early to get a good seat at taste Canowindra, 42 Ferguson Street, from 4-6pm, this Sunday 26 February! This month's feature act, will be the lovely Lucy Lehmann! Lucy has been performing her songs since 2005. By day she is a novelist (The Showgirl and the Brumby was published 2002; a new one is coming soon), so naturally her songs tell stories; often confessional love stories that veer between the gutter and Cloud Nine. Country music has been her travelling companion since she was a child. She was raised in Sydney, and lives either there or in Cowra. Lucy has performed at the folk club before, as well as regular appearances at the popular Woolstock festival, hosted by Rosnay. She is a LOT of fun to listen to, with a very beguiling style. The venue is family friendly, and anyone is welcome to come along just for a look. A donation for the feature act will be appreciated. Potential performers, or other enquiries, are welcome to contact Nerida Cuddy before the show, via www.nerida.info or 0429 048 603.

Coconut Milk, Melon & Sago Dessert

cup sugar cup water 1 cup sago 7 cups of water 1 cup canned coconut milk tsp salt 1 rockmelon Boil sugar & cup water until syrupy, cool. Boil water, add sago & cook on medium-high until mostly translucent, stirring constantly to avoid sticking to the pot. Drain & rinse under cold running water. Set aside. Blend the flesh of half the rockmelon using a food processor. Mix in the sugar syrup, sago, and coconut milk in a serving bowl. Use a melon baller, scoop the flesh out of rockmelon & place on top of the mixture. Chill before serving (as the mixture chills, the consistency will thicken).
