Version History
Version Aug 2010 Nov 2010 May 2011 Release Date Aug 2010 Nov 2010 May 2011 Description Registry key and sample VBS script that prevents installation of all UPD components at install for Point and Print clients Updates made to release notes Updated supported UPD versions information. The registry key has been removed starting with UPD 5.2.5.

Overview
A registry key was added to UPD v 5.1.1 and 5.2.0 to manually control the Point and Print installation behavior on client systems. UPD v 5.2.5 and above do not include this registry key as the driver contains the necessary performance improvements that render this key obsolete. When this key value is set to 1, the UPD will bypass installation operations normally associated with establishing a print queue. Modifying the key value on print servers should be considered for situations where new print connections are established at each login (i.e. Citrix, Windows Terminal Services). Not all print environments will benefit from this change that impacts only the install behavior for point and print clients. This feature was added to the UPD driver in response to CR5094 / CR 5782 Slow Install of UPD to Terminal Service Client. Changing this key value is a supported UPD feature. WARNING: Editing the registry incorrectly can cause serious problems that may result in system instability.

Operation
The registry key is created when a queue is created using UPD 5.1.1 and 5.2.0 on a print server. This key will also get created for an existing UPD printer following an upgrade to v 5.1.1 or 5.2.0. Manually adding this key to an existing UPD printer is not supported- the key is automatically added for all versions that support the feature. Please consult the UPD System Administrators Guide v5.1 for supported installation and upgrade steps. Hive Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\[Printer Name]\PrinterDriverData Key Name: NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation DWord Value = 0 or 1 (default is 0) NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation = 0 Default setting for the key following UPD Install.exe, Add printer Wizard, or upgrading an existing printer to UPD 5.1.1 or higher.

NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation = 1

Point and Print connecting clients will perform an abbreviated installation operation Status Notification Popups and Update Now will not be available on the Point and Print client, unless these services were installed by a previous HP print driver installation process creating shared dependency of common installation objects. Point and print clients installed before the registry setting change experience no change in functionality for the existing printer connections. Server reboot is not required after changing the registry key DWord value HP recommends this setting only for environments where client print connections are not retained between logins, or as directed by HP Support.

Fleet Operation
To change the NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation DWord setting for all UPD printers can be accomplished using a script. A sample script has been provided. Please reference the NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation.vbs in the Printer Administrators Resource Kit. This tool is not eligible for HP Support. Script Usage: 1. Open a command prompt with administrator privileges. 2. Enter cscript NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation.vbs [0|1]. Script output shows registry key name, existing value, and new value. Before use please review sections "Disclaimer Of Warranty and Support" and "Limitation Of Liability" of this document.

Issues Resolved
CR#8041: HPZ* services not loading on point and print client with UPD v5.1.1 (61.107.4.8232) regardless of setting defined for NoPointnPrintInstallHPOperation. Fixed in UPD v5.2.
