Single item measure of Burnout

Please choose the single item that most closely represents how you feel: (1) I enjoy my work. I do not feel burned out. (2) Occasionally I am under stress, and I dont always have as much energy as I once did. But, I dont feel burned out. (3) I am definitely burning out and have one or more signs of burnout, such as physical or emotional exhaustion. (4) The signs of burnout that Im experiencing wont go away. I think about frustrations at work a lot. Or (5) I feel completely burned out and often wonder if I can go on. I am at the point where I may need to make some changes or may need to seek some sort of help.
The two highest burnout scores (symptoms wont go away and feeling completely burned out) were combined into a single measure of persistent burnout. Respondents were then categorized by reported levels of burnout in their professional lives, ranging from (1) no burnout to (2) stressed [no burnout], (3) occasional/partial burnout, or (4) persistent burnout. Rohland BM, Kruse GR, Rohrer JE. Validation of a single-item measure of burnout against the Maslach Burnout Inventory among physicians. Stress and Health 2004; 20:75-9. The single-item was correlated at r = 0.64 (p < 0.0001) with emotional exhaustion and the ANOVA yielded an R2 of 0.5 (p < 0.0001).

Work-Life Balance Checklist

Work through this checklist and tick the box which is most applicable to you.

Agree Sometimes Disagree

Q1. At the moment, because the job demands it, I usually work long hours Q2. I have to take work home most evenings Q3. I often work late or at weekends to deal with paperwork without interruptions Q4. Relaxing and forgetting about work issues is hard to do Q5. I worry about the effect of work stress on my health Q6. Finding time for hobbies, leisure activities, or to maintain friendships and extended family relationships is difficult Q7. I would like to reduce my working hours and stress levels, but feel I have no control over the current situation

If you ticked all or mostly As: you may already be under considerable stress from your lack of work-balance. If you ticked all or mostly Bs: you are not entirely happy with your work-life balance, but in a good position not to let the situation get out of control. If you ticked all or mostly Cs: you have set your own priorities in work-life balance, making them work for you.
