REGIONS APART
Argentinas wine-producing regions are the highest in the world, with the majority located at an average elevation of 900 metres above sea level. The most famous of these vineyards are found in Mendoza, but Patagonia in the south and Salta in the north have also built solid reputations for their wines.
SALTA
Defined by hills and cacti, the vineyards of Salta in the far north are located between 1,700 to 2,400 metres above sea level the highest in Argentina. The wine-producing area centres on the Calchaquies Valleys, where Torronts is the main grape variety. These grapes produce fragrant white wines with delicate floral and fruity aromas. Meanwhile, red grape varieties of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon are also planted, yielding rich, full-bodied wines. CAFAYATE VALLEY The stunning Cafayate Valley is the prevalent wine-growing area of Salta, and successfully grows an array of varietals, particularly Torronts, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah and Chardonnay.
MENDOZA
Considered the most important wine region in Argentina, Mendoza produces 80% of the countrys wine, and places a strong emphasis on quality. Referred to as the land of sun and wine, Mendoza is located on the western border of Argentina, where a haven for wine growing exists. The region is associated with alluvial soils, warm, sunny days, cool nights and low humidity, which enables low yields of concentrated grapes to grow. It is here that Malbec has found its niche, becoming internationally known as Argentinas flagship variety. Characteristically smooth with rich dark fruits and profound density, it is easy to see why Argentine Malbec is treasured by wine-lovers the world over. Mendoza is split into three distinct areas: Lujn de Cuyo and Maip in the north; the central area of the Uco Valley; and the lesser-known areas of San Rafael and General Alvear in the south.
LUJN DE CUYO AND MAIP The areas of Maip and Lujn de Cuyo are responsible for producing some of the most prestigious wines in Argentina a result, perhaps, of their close proximity to the cosmopolitan Mendoza city, combined with altitude and the gravely soils found here. Lujn de Cuyo is the most developed of the two areas and is highly suitable for quality Malbec production, while Maip has a better control on Cabernet Sauvignon.
REGIONS CONTINUED
THE UCO VALLEY The Uco Valley is home to the highest-altitude vineyards in Mendoza up to 1,400 metres above sea level. These high altitudes significantly affect the cool temperatures experienced at night, as well as increasing the solar radiation absorbed during the day. This results in a slow, balanced ripening period, giving forth to wines of elegance and beautiful aromatics. Tupungato, a sub-region of the larger Uco Valley named after the dormant volcano whose snow-capped peak graces the horizon is particularly well-respected, with a number of newly renovated vineyards and developments producing some truly stunning wines. AGRELO Slightly warmer than the Uco Valley, this region is dominated by clay soils which bestow depth and tannic structure on the wines produced.
PATAGONIA
The tail of Argentina is defined as Patagonia, here Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are particularly successful, characterised by their dense colour and complex intensity. Dinosaurs once ruled this arid region where wineries thrive in pockets of oasis amongst the desert, encompassing both Neuqun and Rio Negro. NEUQUN Recently recorded as having the greatest growth amongst Argentinas wine growing areas, Neuqun has over 3,500 hectares of vineyards. Even at the northern end of the Patagonia province, this wine region coexists with the extremes of the Patagonian desert; a large and clear flowing river which intersects the region is partly responsible for its success. Devoted to quality, the wines here are characterised by their remarkable colour, structure and balancing freshness. RIO NEGRO This southern-most wine-growing region is less established than neighbouring Neuqun, but it has great potential for successful wine production.
ANDELU NA CELLARS
MERLOT 2007
Offering a lovely density and freshness, this wine is complemented by good structure and balance. Accents of blackberry, spice and black pepper come to the fore in the mouth and on the nose, while sweet tannins linger onto the smooth finish. Usual Price 10.95 Promo Price 9.25
MALBEC 2009
Fresh, juicy aromas, particularly of blackcurrant, characterise the nose of the Andeluna Malbec. While the palate is almost jammy, it still maintains freshness, with soft-spiced notes giving life to the ripe berry fruits. Perfect as a match with grilled steak or succulent saucisson. Usual Price 12.95 Promo Price 10.95
A recent collaboration between owner Ward Lay and the Rutini family of Argentina, Andeluna Cellars is located in the beautiful Uco Valley near to the town of Tupungato, where the vineyards benefit from the high altitudes of the area. At the head of the dynamic Andeluna winemaking team is the passionate and visionary Silvio Alberto, who was recently named Argentine Young Winemaker of the Year. With guidance from respected consultant Michel Rolland and top-quality fruit at their fingertips, Andeluna Cellars is emerging as one of the top wineries in Argentina.
BODEGA BENEGAS
SYRAH 2007
An earthy, savoury nose introduces the Benegas Syrah in the glass. This leads to a complex, spicy palate with hints of coffee bean, rendering it fresh, concentrated and well-rounded, with soft, supple tannins. Usual Price 21.50 Promo Price 17.50
Bodega Benegas is presided over by owner and winemaker Federico Benegas Lynch. Under Federicos patronage, this Mendozan property is enjoying the complete rejuvenation of an old family tradition: it was Federicos great-grandfather, Tiburcio, who brought the first French vines to Argentina. Following an extremely successful business career, Federico took back the reins at this traditional property in 1998, and has now put the name Benegas firmly back in the hearts and minds of wine lovers the world over. Their top wines are labelled Benegas-Lynch, and, in fact, a distant family connection exists with the famous Lynch-Bages of Bordeaux; nonetheless these wines are proudly and distinctly Argentine.
The Cantena family have over 100 years of wine-growing experience in Mendoza, and are considered the forerunners of export-quality wines from Argentina. Nicols Catena, the respected grandson of the forefather of this winemaking dynasty, discovered the higher altitude microclimates of the Andes were capable of producing exceptional wines. Today, Nicols son and daughter, Ernesto and Laura, run this successful business, as they continue the family quest for incredible quality in the realms of the great Bordeaux-style wines.
MALBEC 2007
The Catena Malbec opens with ripe, concentrated dark fruit aromas, delicate floral notes and traces of vanilla and mocha. Juicy and lush on the palate with concentrated black cherry and redcurrant fruit flavours, the wine is layered with sweet spices, tobacco and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality, giving the wine exceptional length. Usual Price 14.50 Promo Price 12.25
A joint venture between Bodega Terrazas de los Andes (the Argentinian winery of Mot Hennessy) and Chteau Cheval Blanc, the St. milion First Growth, Cheval des Andes produces just one wine an exceptional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Cheval des Andes is also the product of an alliance between two remarkable talents Roberto de la Mota, the winemaker of Terrazas de los Andes, and Pierre Lurton, oenologist and Head of Cheval Blanc. Of this exceptional wine from Lujn de Cuyo, Lurton says: Its a unique creation, because its style is neither purely Argentinian, nor typically Bordeaux. Its authenticity, its signature, and its complexity explain this success.
VIA COBOS
Internationally regarded winemaker Paul Hobbs visited Argentina in 1989 and became immediately interested in both the terroir and Argentine culture, noticing the unique potential for Malbec and other varietals in the region. Later, in 1997, Paul met winemakers Luis Baurraud and Andrea Marchiorri in California, and together they established Via Cobos in Lujn de Cuyo Mendoza. Since then, Paul and his Argentine partners have grown their portfolio of ultra-premium wines, and developed their philosophy to create wines using natural practises. This ensures all aspects are handled with the utmost care, resulting in wines which characteristically possess an intensity and balance that is truly expressive of their Mendozan heritage.

Boasting an impressive four-hectare single vineyard of Malbec and Cabernet, it is planted on original rootstock vines brought from Bordeaux in 1854. In 2001, Donald Hess purchased the property, breathing new life into the estate by significantly investing in new facilities. Bio-dynamically farmed, the extreme altitude of the vineyards allows for lengthened days of intense sunshine and cold nights, growing grapes of intense varietal character and sophistication.
BODEGA AMALAYA
The name Amalaya is rooted in the traditions of the Calchaqui indigenous people, who believed in keeping the gods of nature happy and striving for an equilibrium of forces to assure sustainability over time. The wines produced by Amalaya are Malbec-based, blended with varying percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Bonarda and Tannat according to the vintage. Originally made at Bodega Colom, significant investment has been made by owner Donald Hess of the Hess Family Estates in a new winery in Cafayate to focus exclusively on this wine, which became operational for the 2010 vintage.
17
The Argentinean outpost for the well-respected Bordeaux Chteau Leoville Poyferr, Cuvelier Los Andes follows the lead of their French counterparts in focusing solely on fine wines from the highest-quality fruit. DOA PAU LA
Doa Paula is owned by the respected Santa Rita winery of Chile, who looked across the Andes in 1997 to develop the incredible potential of the Mendozan terrior. They named their estate in honour of Doa Paula Jaraquemada, a brave Chilean patriot who hid 120 Chilean soldiers on her 700-hectare estate during the 1880 Revolutionary War. Their focus is on developing a range of premium Argentine wines, based upon the special characteristics of the Ugarteche area a priveleged sector of Lujn de Cuyo. The winery is headed up by Eguardo del Popolo and David Bonomi, whose constant innovation in new technology and oenology drives the Doa Paula team.
BODEGA EL ESTECO
Bodega El Esteco was founded in 1982 by French brothers David and Salvador, who were attracted by the beauty and unique terroir of the Cafayate Valley in Salta. The estate encompasses vineyards in both the Cafayate Valley and the larger Calchaqui Area, that are, on average, 30 years old, yielding fruit of excellent consistency and character. The vineyards employ organic principles to reduce the need for sprays, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure there is no damage to the grapes. Wines are then crafted in a typically new world style, which reflect the terroir while maintaining freshness and pure fruit characters.
This family owned Bodega is run by Eduardo Cassone and his sons, heirs of Roberto Cassone, founder of the estate. From Piemontese roots, the Cassone family moved to Argentina to continue their wine-growing tradition in the prestigious Lujn de Cuyo region of Mendoza. Surrounded by the majestic Andes mountains, the estate has a number of small vineyard plots in Mendoza yielding high-quality grapes. Established wine-making traditions combined with the simple values of a hard-working family hold this estate strongly together, and renews the passion for winegrowing which is reflected in their superb wines.
DON CRISTBAL
Established in 1999 in the Mendoza region of Argentina, Don Cristbal combines the practices of the region with the best European traditions. Their first wines were launched in 2001, a product of Don Cristbals ultramodern winery and well-maintained vineyards. All three of their vineyards grow at altitudes of between 600 and 1,000 metres above sea level, giving their superb range of wines wonderful balance and expression.
23
MAURICIO LORCA
Originally an in-demand consultant for several Argentinian wineries, Mauricio Lorca recently decided to utilise his expertise to establish a winery of his own. It is here that he is able to express his own vision, creating wines from high-altitude plots in Mendozas Uco Valley and Vistaflores. Continuing as a source of knowledge to help other wineries create a style of their own, Mauricio has a unique understanding of the symbiotic relationship between the grape and soil. In this field he is able to explore his own instincts and experiment at will, with his wines displaying an elegance and lightness of touch that set them apart.
24
The well-respected Italian Boscaini family have owned the Masi vineyards in Veneto for six generations and specialise in Amarones and Reciotos. The family developed their winemaking, viticulture techniques and wine style in their native Italy, and discovered these can be exported and adapted wherever the natural and cultural location proves to be suitable. This is the philosophy that led Masi to Argentina, where excellent results have been obtained in the Tupungato Valley of the Mendoza region. The resulting wines combine the generous, firm and exuberant nature of Argentina, with the relaxed, elegant and cordial style of those from the Veneto region of Italy.
25
BODEGA NORTON
The story of Bodega Norton began in 1895, when a Mr Edmond J.P. Norton was involved in the construction of a new railway that would link Mendoza with Chile. He admired the Mendoza region for all its rugged beauty so much so that he returned shortly after to plant vines imported from France. Michael Halstrick purchased the estate in 1991 and started a new phase of heavy investment, revamping and growth, which paved the way for its great international expansion. His philosophy for the company guides the path for their premium range of wines, stating: Each of our wines reveals the sum total of our climate, our soil and our creative passion. All these elements live in every bottle of our wine and are shown in the pleasure of those who enjoy it.
Bodegas Santa Ana is a leading Estate in the Cuyo region of the Mendoza province, high in the Andes on the Western side of Argentina. Founded in 1891 by Don Luis Tirasso, Santa Ana now boasts some of the finest vineyard sites in the area, with the natural thaw melt negating the need for irrigation, while the high altitudes restrict yield, increase exposure and provide cool evening temperatures. Bodegas Santa Ana has been honing and perfecting their particular philosophy of winemaking for years, with ripe, soft fruit combined with an unmistakably Argentinean attitude, creating a crowd-pleasing range of exceptionally good value for money wines.
27
BODEGA SEPTIMA
Established in 1999, Septima the seventh winery to be built by Grupo Codornu produces award-winning wines from the cool climate Agrelo region of Mendoza, with additional vineyards in Uco Valley, one of the finest grape-growing areas in Argentina. The 312-hectare estate specialises in complex yet approachable wines with fullbodied flavors. Winemaker Paula Burgo has this to say: We strictly monitor the wines at every stage ensuring the highest quality with minimal intervention for a natural approach.
Owned by Gustavo Benvenuto and Roberto Luka, Finca Sophenia was named in honour of their daughters Sophia and Eugenia, who have been best friends since childhood. Roberto Luka is the driving force behind the estate and in 1997 purchased 130 hectares of land in the beautiful Tupungato valley in western Mendoza. Key to the Bodegas success is Matias Michelini, an up-and-coming young winemaker carving an excellent reputation for himself in Argentina. He ensures the wines are produced without Usual Price 12.95 any fining agents, resulting in a superb collection of wines Promo Price 10.95 that are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

RJ VIEDOS
Comprising 116 hectares of vineyards situated at 1,0001,400 metres altitude in the renowned Valle de Uco region of Mendoza, this family owned winery was conceived by Ral Jofr a decade ago to safeguard the future of his four daughters and family generations to come. Today, the girls have accumulated exemplary experience in all fields of the wine business and, together with father Ral, are actively involved in the daily running of the winery and marketing their delicious wines. The Joffr family philosophy is dedicated to producing top-quality wines with a strong personality and a distinctive character, which is recognisable throughout the range.
30
In 1999, Bodegas Chandon a subsidiary of Mot & Chandon launched Terrazas de los Andes, a pioneering brand of high-quality varietal wines. Extensive research found the Lujn de Cuyo region in Mendoza to be the ideal location, and an old Spanish-style winery in the heart of Perdriel was restored to become the cornerstone of the venture. Today, the austerity of the original brickwork and warmth of the oak casks contrast with the Bodegas gleaming stainless steel tanks and state-of-the-art technology.
31
TRIVENTO
Independently run and wholly owned by well-known winegrowers Concha y Toro of Chile, Trivento was developed in 1996. The name Trivento means three winds, describing the seasonal winds that make their mark on the sunny and semi-arid province of Mendoza, where the winery is based. The Trivento team work tirelessly to achieve the best results through careful monitoring and expertise, with Chief Winemaker and Mendoza native, Federico Galedeano, at the helm since 1997, who is responsible for creating Eolo, the iconic wine of the estate.
32
U NIVERSO AUSTRAL
A branch of the VC Family Estates founded in 1989 to produce premium, elegant wines from Argentina and Chile, Universo Austral was established out of a desire to express the potential of Patagonia. The estate covers vineyards in both Neuqun and Rio Negro, where the experienced wine-making team crafts aromatic wines with defined body and concentration. The top wine from Universo Austral is named after the creator of Argentina and the world of the Tehuelches people. The Tehuelches are the ancient inhabitants of Patagonia, whose legends tell the story of Koch, the only original inhabitant of this vast land. Overcome by loneliness, he cried a river of tears which created the sea, while his breath became the wind.
33
FRANOIS LURTON
The son of renowned wine estate owner Andr Lurton, and a member of one of Bordeauxs most respected families, Franois Lurton has spent 20 years travelling the world garnering quite a reputation of his own, due to his expertise and passion for the global wine industry. Franois and brother Jacques have been working in Argentina since 1992, originally in collaboration with Catena, and later developing their own estate in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. Now with 200 hectares under vine, the estate is at full production capacity with expansion taking place to meet the demands of their excellent wines.

BOLLINGER
Family owned and run for 180 years, Bollinger uses traditional methods and blends to create a powerful signature house style, producing muscular wines with body, depth and power. Unusually for a Champagne House, Bollinger have been growers and producers from the outset, with a healthy 70% of the grape supply coming from their own vineyards. The grapes that form the non-vintage blends derive predominantly from Grand and Premiers Cru vineyards. And even though these grapes are of the highest quality, Bollinger only uses juice from the first pressing, called the Cuve. In addition the house chooses to vinify parts of its Non-Vintage Special Cuve, Ros and all of its prestige Cuve,: La Grande Anne in old oak barrels, a technique quite unique in Champagne. A proportion of these wines will then be aged between five and 12 years and used as Rserve wines in the Special Cuve and Ros blends, guaranteeing the impeccable consistency and quality of the Bollinger style.
SPECIAL CUVE NV
The very essence of Bollinger is found in the Special Cuve. This Brut Non-Vintage is in the traditional Champagne style, and composed of a blend of vintage wines from multiple years. Bollinger dedicates a great deal of attention to their Special Cuve as it represents the signature and style of the house. The final component, which provides the delicate colour and aromas of ripe red fruits, comes exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards in the Cte dAy and Verzenay. Inimitably Bollinger, it exudes a fresh, fruity and yeasty nose, with the palate clean and succulent with a long and luscious finish.
